The honeymoon is over. why is my mac running like a pc???
So its been a little over a year since I've made the switch, and out of nowhere im constantly feeling the same urge to throw my powerbook out the window like i did with my old pc. Programs are constantly locking up, spinning circle, im always required to hard reboot as the system just doesnt respond. Is there anything I can do to get my machine running normal again?
Also david_s
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available.
You haven't posted any information as to how you use the Mac, what applications are causing problems, what you may have installed, changed, upgraded or updated, type and number of periperals attached, etc.
My crystal ball is on the fritz!

when i run keynote in the play mode, some times the computer get stuck, why?, when i run key note in the play mode, some times the computer get stuck, why?
hello,
I had the same issue. This is what I was told to do.
iWork has to be removed completely to be effective when re-installing, you must use an application removal tool to do this or it wont remove every Keynote file.
Appcleaner will do this and its free.
The following procedure has helped solve many issues with Keynote:
1 Close Keynote then use Appcleaner
2 Empty the Trash
3 Shut down the Mac, then restart and press the shift key immediately after the startup sound, then release shift when the Apple logo appears
allow the Mac to boot up to the desktop, it will take longer then usual as the hard drive is being repaired
4 restart the Mac
5 Reinstall iWork
6 Repair permissions:
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > First Aid: click on your system disc in the drive column
and select Repair Disk Permissions
7 open Keynote and test -
I just paid for and downloaded the wrong version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro. I downloaded the Microsoft version and I have a Mac running OX Yosemite. How do I get a credit for what I ordered and then reorder the correct Mac version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro
If you ordered Acrobat via subscription, then you can use either Windows or Mac version. Just download/install the Mac version, then activate it with your Adobe ID.
If you purchased the perpetual license, then you need to Contact Customer Care bu chat or phone. -
Installed the new Lightroom 5 CC on a Mac running the OX X Yosemite version 10.10.3 (14D136) Lightroom starts to load but within a 1/2 sec it closes. Is there a fix?
I had the same problem earlier today. Sign out of your account for CC in the Preferences panel, close the CC toolbar app. Then sign back in, and the download process might begin in earnest for you. Took me SIX HOURS to download this pig, and now it crashes continually. This software is not ready for release based on today's experience. Hopefully you will at least be able to get to the level of frustration I have arrived at, beyond the level of frustration you are currently stuck at trying to get it to work.I am on the same OS. Too bad Apple abandoned a pro level competitor to LR. Hopefully in the near future they will update Photos so that it competes well with LR.

How can i make my mac run like new
What can I do to make my computer run like when I first bought? Thanks
I am confused. You posted in the FaceTime for Mac Forum and your profile says iPhone and iOS. So what is you are asking about here that is performing slowly? More details would really help.

SLOW MAC: Why does my mac run faster during the "erase free space" operation?
Hi community!
So I've been using my Macbook Pro Late 2012 edition for just over a year and a half now, and to no surprise, I find the spinning beachball whirling away more often than I'd care to see it. So I start a full mac clean-up including deleting login items, using Appzapper to clear up my apps, using Onyx to clear up some cache elements, deleting unused files and freeing up hard drive space.
I've successfully cleared over 60% of disk space, (200GB used, 300GB free), but I find a recurring problem persisting, despite my best efforts to get rid of it. You see, every few seconds, the spinning beach ball appears and freezes up my entire desktop no matter what I'm doing. Trying even the simplest things, like opening the apps in the dock or right clicking a file takes ages, movies freeze up all the time, regardless of what app plays them, finder is slow and it has nothing to do with my ram usage (I use the app FreeMemory to check in real-time how much I'm using) or my CPU usage (Activity monitor open at all times). It has to be the drive.
So then I tried running ClamXav, and found a windows trojan, which I deleted manually, but no change.
Now, during all these stages I was regularly running erase free space opeartions (Fast x1), and noticed something curious: during the operation, my problem disappears. I still get occasional loading beach balls, and ocassional jumps in movies, but other than that, I can use my mac normally again.
So now, I'm constantly running erase free space operations and it's painfully annoying to say the least.
I've tried defragging, to no avail.
I had the problem on Mountain Lion, and upgraded to Mavericks thinking that could change it (by the way it took 18 hours to install mavericks, don't know if that's related).
In other words, I need your help. Does anybody know if I've no choice but to buy an external hardrive, backup my data, and erase my entire homedrive? Can this situation still be salvaged?
Thanks!EtreCheck version: 1.9.12 (48)

Ok, so the honeymoon is over....(a week in review)
It's been a week since I purchased the iPhone and so far I have been delighted with the product. I've read the horror stories about problems with activation, e-mails,battery life, and countless other topics that I read about in this forum and in all fairness I have not yet encountered a major problem.
The peformance of the phone is what I've expected from apple. True there is room for improvement but what you have right now, this phone kicks azz.
Some of my reviews of the services and features of the iPhone:
AT&T- Activation was slow, but I expected that. I had to wait 2hrs. for the activation but once the phone the fun begins. I have made over 80 calls, the longest was 30mins. No one was dropped volume was loud and clear.
E-mail- Set-up 2 accounts: .Mac & SBCglobal. No problemo here with sending and recieving.
Safari- In some of the hot spots it's a little slow at home it's acceptable, not as fast as the desktop or laptop but when its at EDGE mode, I just cringe. Cut and paste...apple need to work on that real soon.
TextMsg- I'm not much of a texter but I have adapted to the touch screen easily. I use a similar screen at work but with practice, my typing errors has been cut down.
iPod- It's an iPod. I don't plan to listen to music on my phone that much. I have a Nano and the 60gb for that.
Camera- I'm a snob when it comes to this because I'm an avid photographer. If you're not shooting a DSLR like the Nikon D-200 you're shooting crap.
Google Map- Not exactly GPS but it's a useful tool. I was able to zoom in at my home in satellite mode, scary stuff
I know there are some other features I didn't mentioned but like I said, the overall performance iphone has been really good. Overall grade would be an A-
Mac OS X (10.4.10)My wife and I have had ours for a week and we are THRILLED with the phones.
AT&T - Mine took nearly 30 hours to activate, my wife's 7. I was angry at 1st about this but once the phone was working, I was happy. We left verizon and our chocolate phones for the Iphone and could not be happier. I have not experienced any connection issues, though my wife has had on instance of losing the service altogether. We found out it was an AT&T glitch that deactivated her phone, then reactivated it. Odd, and happened once.
Email - This is the MAIN reason I have the Iphone. I can get my emails anywhere and its a joy to send and receive email. Love the touch keyboard and can type amazingly fast on it now. My buddy has a $500 blackberry but I like my Iphone so much more.
Safari - Have not had one single crash and no problems at all. EDGE is slow as heck, but my WIfi is fast. Im happy so far and Apple has announced a flash plug in coming with the 1st update.
Text - AMAZING! SO much better than my chocolate. Again, the keyboard is so cool, and easy to use.
Ipod - Best Ipod Apple has made, BUT 8GB is not enough, plus I do not want to drain my battery using the Ipod. I have 2 nanos to cover my music. Coverflow and the album art plus touch interface is amazing. Im sure Apple will release a new Ipod like this. If so, Im in.
Camera - I too am a camera snob and use a Leica M8 (sold my D200) and the camera in my Iphone will not get much use except to maybe take a pic of a contact for my contact list. Its good for a phone though.
Google Maps - I have used this 4 times in the past week and LOVE IT! Amazing app to have with you on the go.
After 1 week I give this Iphone an A. I have found it a joy to use, I have had no major issues (low volume appeared to fix itself), and the touch screen has been flawless in operation. Anyone who bashes the Iphone has not really used it or given it a chance. Updates are coming, including flash, and other cool things. Anyone who says a Blackberry pearl is a better phone is crazy. If I was offered $1k and a pearl for my Iphone I wouldn't do the trade. Sorry. -
Why is my Mac running so slow?
I have a Mac book late 2010 and it has 4 gb of ram. I got mountain lion and now every thing is slow like Turning on takes 1:30 to get to the log on screen. Loging in takes 30 sec opening any programs takes 30+ secs. Do you know why this is the case? I have never cleaned up the computer besides emptying the trash. Is there other maintenance I need to be doing? Also I'm not sure if there is a defrag tool in osx? I'm assuming not? Can you guys help me figure out what is wrong?
AustinPlease list what you have done to diagnos this problem. You could have missed an item in the list.
The three top candidates:
1) not enough memory. Seems not to be the problem.
2) hd issues. Run disk utility -- verify disk & correct permissions
3) Some app is running away with processors.
Run activity monitor. Look for a process that is taking up lots of time.
be sure to
-- list all processes
-- click on cpu tab. with high to low
-- memory usage.

Can anyone tell me why my computer is so slow. Even typing suddenly stops on the screen. Its a Mac OSX desktop.
Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -

It doesn't sound like it, but you might try adding a different DNS server.
In Network System prefs, select the network service you use (ethernet or WiFi).
Click on Advanced.
Click on DNS tab.
Click the + button
Enter these numbers:
For OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Or Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 -

FIrst,
Completely uninstall ALL Google software per the instructions on Google's website. Currently, all Google apps, especially Google Chrome AND Drive are not playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks. Until Google releases an "official" fix or update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall all Google apps.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox. Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently.
You you have too many user startup/login items in your startup list. Having this many apps launching and running in the background can really cause a performance hit on your Mac.
You REALLY NEED to examine which items you truly need have absolutely have launch and run at Mac startup and/or login.
Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.
You need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied.
You may need to, ACTUALLY, go to the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.
Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins, extensions and add-ons as needed, also.
Also, if you have any connected, third party devices, like non-Apple keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card readers, etc, you need to go to each device maker's website and update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions, if available and applicable.
Good Luck! -
every internet browser keeps the main page that renders when you do a search. you can click on any of the options and a new window opens. the latest version of FF i downloaded today has completely removed that feature. when you click on a search choice, it opens up in the same window as the search page and you loose all your search options. that is not good..
i may have to go to Chrome now unless you can fix thishello, this might be a preference in your google search settings. go to google.com/preferences and enable the option to ''Open search results in a new browser window''.
