The HUGE noise on spinning optical drive. is it normal?

I just got a new 2.33 macbook pro 2 days ago...at first, I tried to use optical drive for opening CD and I heard the huge noise came out... before I ask apple support to fix this problem, I want to make sure it is not the normal and there must be something wrong. Any idea?

Hello All, I have a early 2008 Macbook 4.1, with a 2.1 Ghz, 4G ram, and a 7200 RPM HD, and I am also frequently between 60-85 deg C. (140 - 185 deg F.)
My fans runs between 1800 rpm up to 6200 at higher CPU temps.
Sometimes I wonder if running the Macbooks wifi, bluetooth, and an external 24" monitor, increases the interior temp?
I have had on occasion, doing some encoding with a slew of programs running, had the temp up to 96 deg C (205 deg F), and it still was running fine, mind you I was freaking out.
But when I checked on the Intel site for max CPU temp for my model processor T8300, it said that it was 105 deg C as the maximum. 105 deg C converts to which is 221 deg F.
I figure that they must have some kind of CPU shutdown/slowdown mechanism so if it gets too hot.
And if it doesn't, my 3 year AppleCare will have to deal with it.
I am more interested in the Hard Drive temp, since if that cooks, there goes my "restore plan" into action. But it generally stays around 90 - 100 deg F.
My buddy has an iMac, and it runs between 70-100 deg F. Go figure, it's cold as ice
Just thought I would share my 2 cents worth, IAN...

  • Just got back from the Apple Store...optical drive officially dead

I just got back from the Apple Store, which confirmed what I feared all along. I received my MBP C2D over the holidays and was worried when it had trouble booting up several times. After trying to burn a few cds (some would quit, others worked fine), and a few discs that refused to read or eject I visited the boards to find out that issues with the Matshita UJ 587 were widespread. At this point my computer does not even recognize the ATA or Disc Burning hardware or the OSX disc inside. The only positive to come out of this is the customer service offered by Apple. I took the computer to the genius bar and the computer refused to boot up after the tech installed an OSX disc (hence the stuck cd inside). They are giving me a new computer since this one is brand new, but unfortunately I will have to order it from Apple Care since it is a custom job. For all of you out there with early MBP C2D optical drives that are acting up I feel your pain. Get your computer into an Apple store before the problem gets worse, these optical drives are awful.
Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thank you. After 2 hours on the phone with Apple Care this morning they finally confirmed what the Mac Genius told me last night. The computer was shipped back this afternoon and I'll post again if there's any trouble with the new unit, I think I just got a lemon with this one...too bad. This is my first Mac so I'm really trying hard to stay positive.

  • Horrid noise with my optical drive

    Hi There,
Whenever my powerbook wakes up / turns on, comes alive, the dvd/cd drive vibrates and shakes and sputters and makes a generally terrible noise. It ceased to burn dvds months ago, and a few weeks ago, it decided to stop allowing me put a disk in its innards. I'm getting a new computer soon and my apple care has long since run out, so i don't want to pay for a repair or another drive. In the meanwhile though, i think my boyfriend's going to throw something at it when it makes the noise. How do i disable the laptop from registering the drive at all so we don't have to listen to this heart-wrenching noise? (it makes me want to cry for my laptop, poor thing).
    Thanks, I appreciate any advice.

Hi again. Instructions for removing the drive are here. But instead of physically removing the drive, I suggest that you simply disconnect the ribbon cable that connects it to the logic board. I say this because other essential components of the Powerbook are mounted on a bracket attached to the optical drive in your model, and if the drive is removed, those components won't have anything to be anchored to.
The ribbon cable connector you'll have to pry up using a nonmetallic tool (believe it or not, a child's plastic tiddlywink will work well if a fingernail isn't strong enough) is the yellow-circled tab being lifted in the top illustration on this page of the above-linked instructions. Click once on the photo to see it enlarged. You shouldn't need to follow the rest of the instructions — just lift that tab.
The instructions for removing the drive will only come into play if you find that it's impossible to get the computer's bottom panel back on without pressing the tab back into place again — I don't know exactly how much clearance there is inside the case for that tab not to be in its proper position. If necessary, you can follow all the steps to remove the drive, and when you've got it out far enough, detach the end of the cable that connects to the drive and remove the cable entirely. Then put the drive and the components that piggyback on it back in place. It will be nonfunctional and silent, the cable won't be in the way, and you'll be able to get the bottom cover back on without obstruction.
Whether you remove the cable or just disconnect it, I strongly recommend covering the drive slot in the outside of the Tibook's case with a strip of tape so no disc can be inserted into the drive. If you did insert a disc, removing and dismantling the drive would be the only way to get the disc out again.
I should probably have said at the outset that there's no way to disable the drive (and prevent it from making noise from time to time) with software alone.

  • IMac 24" (mmid 2007?) Black boot screen, Fans run normal, HDD Spins, Optical drive Spins, no chime and can't find how to fix.

So my girlfriend boss wanted me to fix her computer. So I brought it home turned it on, and it didnt chime but it booted to the gray screen with apple logo/ slashed circle/and folder with a "?" So I made a USB Mac OS x bootable drive (FLASH) held down alt (try using a windows keyboard its fun)  was able to select option and install a fresh copy. all seemed well was running really hot so I poped of the screen. HOLY MOLY! this thing is CAKED with dust, and I am not kidding it has literally piles of dust. So I ran updates, and did firmware updates. Turned it off for the night.
The next morning I went to radio shack and got Dust remove spray, opened it up made sure I was carful taking off the screen, and blew the sucker out. now its NICE and CLEAN. then i made sure I plugged everything in and turned it on. Drive spun like normal, Optical checked for a CD, and fans are also running normally. but no chime, no nothing stays as silent as normal but doesnt budge, it is like it hangs.
Some background knowledge I know next to nothing about Apple, I am Windows based but have been intreged with the new line of Mac Books. anyone help me out?

I figured it out it was the ram. I had took one from my old laptop and its was 6400, and the Mac i have calls for 5300 i went picked some up and wam it turned right on. WOOT!

  • Why doesnt the j-micron detect 2 optical drives

i am curious . why does not that j-micron dectect 2 optical drives in the system , all hell broke lose when in installed the drivers , before that both the optical drives were working but were slow , so i decided to install the jmicron drivers , what i dont understand is that after installation why does it only show just 1 optical drive.
then if u uninstall it then nothing works , you have to reinstall windows all over again , someone said to move the ide connector to the blue socket , mine is connected to the yellow socket ,
what will happen if i move he drives to the blue socket will i get faster copying etc , coz now the drives work slowly , the system is fast but why are the drives so damn slow.
    thanks

You already have a topic open, it would've been easer to follow if you posted there...
Did you follow the advice given to you in the other topic ? Did you check the master/slave setup is correct ?
If you plug the drives into the blue slot they will work on the IDE controller from the intel chipset - wich should work on it's own without drivers directly trough bios...

  • Loud optical drive - is this normal?

On my base 13 inch MBP the optical drive sounds pretty loud and i was wondering if this is normal.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1723
    it sounds exactly like that

As long as it has no trouble reading or writing discs, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • HT1338 As soon as I switch on my Mac book Pro, I get a sound from the optical drive. Is it normal??

It is a 13" MAC book pro bought about a month back.

In addition to checking system preferences/sound/output and selecting built in if that does not work, make sure volume is up and mute not checked.
You can try the following, Take a set of headphones and plug theim in and out several times (there is a micro switch that sometimes gets stuck)
Go to applications>utilities>Audio MIDI set up, see if you can select built in there, make sure volume is uo mute not checked.
    Try a NVRAM/PRAM reset:
Power off, power back on holding the following keys   OPTION + COMMAND + P + R
Continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times, then release, reboot

  • I own CS2, and my machine quit working. The replacement machine has no optical drive.

I can't seem to be able to address this issue with Adobe customer service.
It's an endless loop of referrals to FAQs and forums, with no way to submit an email to them?
    Am I missing something?
It seems like they should be able to set up a download or something so I can actually USE their program, which I spent $500 on, on mjy new machine.
    Frustrating.

What operating system does your new machine have?
If it's a mac intel like os x 10.7 10.8 or 10.9, then photoshop cs2 won't work on an those intel macs, because photoshop cs2 was made for PowerPC macs.
Anyway, you'll need to download the non activation version of phiotoshop cs2 and use the provided serial number, because adobe shutdown the activation servers for cs2 and so even if you installed from your original media, it wouldn't work, other than the grace period, because it can't be activated.
Activation server shut down for Creative Suite 2, Acrobat 7, and Macromedia products

  • Noise from Optical Drive?

    Hello All,
I have a problem with noise in my optical drive. It keeps making "seeking" noises every minute that goes by. it sound like eek eek erk erk. LOL but yeah extremely annoying especially at night. BDAqua has the same drive as me, purchased from OWC:
    TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S222L:
    Firmware Revision: SB02
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)

    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
Also, Another problem, it will not sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. I have set my power saving preferences to sleep the Mac after 15 minutes of inactivity. Both System Preferences and System profiler acknowledge this but the Mac just will not sleep.
    System Power Settings:
    AC Power:
    System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 15
    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 15

    Wake On Modem Ring: Yes
    Hardware Configuration:
    UPS Installed: No
PS: by the way I have to manually sleep it. (pressing the power button on front of the machine, or touching the power LED on my 17 inch Studio Display with ADC.)
A little bit about my set up: I have a Power Mac G5 (specs are below), all that is connected to it is my 17 Inch LCD Apple Studio Display with ADC, I have an HP Deskjet 3520 Printer directly connected to the back of the Display via USB, and then I have a Bluetooth Aluminum Keyboard and Magic Mouse. I just got them last christmas. My Mac is connected to our Wi-Fi (NETGEAR WGR614v7) router via AirPort Extreme Card installed inside the Mac) and I have internet sharing set to share my AirPort connection via Ethernet (which is where my AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11g) is connected) My APEBS is not using WDS, just setup like any other router, just the service is coming from the Power Mac G5 rather than a Modem. This is my make shift signal booster if you will. LOL. nothing else is connected to the Mac. no apps are open I log out (but still stay wirelessly connected to the router) and the Mac sits making noises all night long from the optical drive. Im running Mac OS X 10.5.8 If that helps. Also, if this is of any use?:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x4E)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8)
    Current Wireless Network: Knice Wi-Fi
    Wireless Channel: 1
    Thanks In Advance.

    Hello peoples,
@BDAqua: Yeah, It burns fine. Fast as can be. no problems with burning, erasing, formatting, reading. On any media. Ive tried all types of blank and burned Discs this drive supports (yes I have no life LOL) and everything checks out A-OK.

And it's awesome when I logged in here to write about this problem that you're note was here - I'm >not crazy either.
Awesome. I'm glad that nobody here is a pyscho.
My G5 Quad Core does this and it's annoying as... About every 20 minutes I get this "click click >clack" as the drive is checked for media. The machine is on 24-7 and doesn't have sleep enabled at >all, save put hard drives to sleep when possible.
Sounds exactly like my Machine. Go in the System Profiler and post your optical drive specs here please? Thanks in advance.
The thing is that it did this in my dual G5 that I had right before it - so I thought it was maybe >software (it JUST did it while I was typing this - it's TAUNTING me!).
    Yeah same here my friend.
Like yourself it's actually in a place where, at night, though subtle, it wakes me up! I'm threatening to >go in there and pull the plug on the drive completely...
Tell me about it. My Power Mac G5 is right beside my bed. LOL Too lazy to leave my room to check my email and Facebook and stuff, LOL (even though I have my iPhone 3GS...) but I still like falling asleep with my iTunes on.
Would be interested to hear if you find a solution - this didn't happen on earlier G5s I had so what >gives....
Yeah I originally bought this drive for my modded eMac. But I didnt hear a peep, (probably due to the eMac being a tight all-in-one machine with so much other things PLUS it had the loudest fan in the world lol. It had two settings—On and Off—ridiculous) And yes I wuld love to find a fix. Not so much the sleeping as I like having my AirPort Extreme Base station online at all times anyway.
    Regards.

  • Random optical drive noise

I have a 1.33 mhz powerbook that I purchased a little over a year ago.
Twice now I've had a strange occurrence–the optical drive has made the noise that it makes when it's ejecting a disc, without a disc being present.
I tried searching for a similar posts on this board but couldn't come up with any. Is this the sign of an impending problem?

    Perhaps your PowerBook is bulimic!
As long as your optical drive is still functioning properly with discs in it, then you shouldn't worry. Your warranty is up, and you don't want to worry about fixing something unless it's broken, especially with Apple laptops. Unless you have AppleCare, calling Apple is going to be about as helpful as bringing sand to the desert.
If your optical drive stops working, you have a couple of solutions. There are companies that install optical drives for PowerBooks, such as http://www.mcetech.com. If you want to stick to internal, that's your best course of action. Or, if you can't part with your PowerBook for that long (you ship it to them and they install it for you), you can just pick up a FireWire optical drive.

  • Optical Drive Noise when Playing CD

One out of every 2 or 3 music CDs I play is accompanied a by buzzing and vibrating of the optical drive. Most of the time it is bearable, but every so often the noise is very excessive.
My previous Mini (2005) did the same thing, and all Macs I have used in the past 10 years or so seem to have loud, vibrating optical drive noise of some kind when installing software from a CD or reading a CDR.
Any suggestions? Or, am I expecting too much when I'd just like to listen to a CD while I work?
    Thanks

Desterodo is correct. The optical drive check is normal and is desirable, as you wouldn't be able to start up from a DVD unless the presence of the disc can be verified.
Yes, you could make it stop. By opening the computer and removing the optical drive. But the cure would be much worse than the disease.
Be content, my friend. The optical drive check isn't very loud, and only lasts a second each time it happens.:-)

  • Optical Drive-Strange noises

Whenever I try to put a disk into my optical drive, it works normally, but thers a weird snapping noise, like some sort of motor is winding too tight, and snapping back. The drive runs normally, and ive had no problem with the drive, im just wondering if this sound is normal or not. I've noticed that my friends Macbook Pro dosnt make this noise.

Can you tell us what tests, Luke, and exactly how you managed this?
My MacBook also makes loud strange clicking noises when a CD or DVD is inserted.
What worries me is that they're just not healthy sounds for an optical drive to make (unless one is feeding a house brick into them).
Can it really be 'normal', or have just some of us got faulty drives which will cease to work, tantalisingly just after our free Applecare has expired?
Has anyone got a MacBook that takes discs in silently?

  • Optical drive on iMac at work, barely one year old, won't read CD's....disc utilities shows disc unavailable!  Rarely used and out of warranty, what a rip off!!  I have been on MACS since the 80's and things are getting more and more difficult

Optical drive on iMac at work, barely one year old, won't read CD's....disc utilities shows disc unavailable!  Rarely used and out of warranty, what a rip off!!  I have been on MACS since the 80's and things are getting more and more difficult to deal with. Why did it quit after barely being used? Any help from Apple?

It depends on what you mean by "barely one year old". If the iMac is only a couple of days out of warranty, Apple's been known to make exceptions and extend the warranty, though it's by no means guaranteed. If it's several days or more out of warranty, then Apple will fix it, if it's a hardware problem, but the repair won't be free. This is no different now then it would have been with a Mac purchased back in the 80s.
Why the drive failed, if indeed it has, is impossible to say. Could have been a static shock, a weak component that failed when power was applied, or a mechanical fault in one of the tiny parts used in optical drives and hard drives that finally broke.
    Regards.

  • One of the screws connecting the optical drive is a manufacturer defect

Hi, one day I decided to take a look at the back of my MacBook Pro, I discovered that one of the screws connecting the optical drive bay is dead..will apple fix this?( I have the apple care )
    Thanks.

Actually I doubt they will fix it. First there is no reason for you as the user to be fooling with the screws that hold the optical drive in. That is not a User Replaceable part and voids the warranty if you remove the optical drive. Second if the optical drive works there is no reason to take any of the screws out that hold it in as that only need to be done if the optical drive fails. Once the optical drive fails and need to be replaced then Apple will deal with it at that time, whether the replcement is done under warranty or at your expense. Until that time I seriously doubt they will take the time and effort to replace one screw that doesn't cause any problems to the functioning of the computer and optical drive itself and normally can't be seen unless the bottom is taken off.
    But no harm in asking.

  • Installing second optical drive and the door hangs

This is just an FYI post, have not been able to find anyone else with the exact same problem, but thought I would list in the event of.
I originally installed an internal DVD R/RW Lightscribe drive from LaCie in a Power Mac G4 Dual 1Gig and it worked well! I have since purchased a MacPro and wanted to move the Lightscribe drive into the second optical drive bay. So after installing the drive and attempting to open the tray it was apparent that the door on the case would not allow the tray to open. The front of the Lightscribe tray was too bulky to fit through the opening on the narrower Mac Pro optical drive door.
Well, the folks at Lacie had attached a nameplate to the front of the tray that works fine in other configurations, but on the MacPro the clearance for the tray is narrower and it's bulk would not activate the sliding door properly.
Someone was thinking, because the tray nameplate is detachable with a little effort. I can provide photos if need be.
Tray closes as it should now.

    Hi TCherry,
Your situation interests me since I was thinking of doing the same with a previous optical drive from an old G4. I also wanted to add it to my MacPro's 2nd slot.
Are you still willing to supply some pics to see what you did?
    Rio.
