The "I don't like locked bootloaders" thread.

I posted this over at the Motorola forums for the Droid X, but given that VZW has a hand in crafting these decisions I think it's very relevant to post here too.  While I have this stance with smartphone manufacturers, I have it with VZW too.  If VZW can't make a phone available to us that's friendlier in these terms, VZW will lose a lot of business.
I know there must be quite a few of these posts and that many have been deleted.  Whatever Motorola's behavior in response to my attempt to articulate my opinion as a customer will either foster constructive discussion or only further alienate "yet another customer".  Customer, as in the person whom pays for Motorola's continued operations, earning reports, employee wages, etc etc etc.
I don't want to continue to opine on the obvious things (such as it is the CUSTOMER that makes this forum possible by financially supporting Motorola), I'd rather give feedback.
To put it succinctly, Motorola Mobility's behavior as a corporation has been reprehensible to me.  The takedown notices for recovery software is appalling.  If there is copyrighted material contained in the sbf files, why can't Motorola compromise and publicly provide sbf files sans copyrighted materials?  If it's part of the design, take it out and let us obtain it in another fashion.
Let's back it up a little bit to get to how I came to be a Motorola customer in the first place, the Droid.  The Droid was exceptionally well done.  I loved how it worked and I loved the early Eclair access it gave me by buying it.  It was also vanilla Android.  It was smooth and quick to respond.  It didn't contain much bloatware, everything seemed peaceful.  I could also gain root access and load custom software onto it.  Some things were better than others and I ended up with a device that was truly remarkable.  My favorite ROM ended up being JRummy's lithium mod.  It was source built from official Google software and was far superior to anything Motorola released to date.  I could theme it, I could do many things with it.
When the Droid X came out I looked forward to the hardware.  I was extremely disappointed with the bootloader, but a hack was inevitably released.  Now we're here where Motorola has taken active steps toward penalizing people for tinkering with their phone.  The bootloader being locked down again after the 2.2 OTA and no we don't even have a leaked sbf recovery to go off of.
My feedback is this, my next upgrade will come around.  Based on Motorola's behavior they have made decisions that are not friendly to me.  I do not like being restricted.  It's as if I bought a car with the hood welded shut.  I will not buy a phone that's locked down in this manner with active attempts to prevent me from installing unauthorized software.  If there's one thing I like to do, it's install unauthorized software.  If I want to sit there and eat jelly donuts or biscuits and gravy I darn well had better be able to even if it's not "good for me".  It's my choice.  Besides, if *I* approve of something to be installed on my phone that should be my own choice.  It is *MY* phone.  I paid for it, it's mine.  The concept of restricting this for my own security is irrational to me.  Especially when the only things out there are things I intentionally want to install that improve my phone (by removing Blur, for example).  I also have no use for Blockbuster, I want it gone.  I should be able to choose to not see the app in my drawer without having to resort to third party apps or rooting.
Thus said, unless Moto changes this behavior, my next phone will NOT be Motorola branded.
I also do not care to consider any arguments or counter points from Motorola.  I don't care to what degree other phones are locked down or what the industry's general practices are.  If I cannot buy a phone I can't tinker with, I won't buy a phone.  Simple as that.  Spare your counter points as they are hollow and without merit.

You might as well not posted if you didnt want any feed back... What was the point of this post?
The point seems to be a massive "WAAAHHH!"  Seriously, the locked bootloader is a non-issue.  If you cannot "tinker" with your Droid X currently, Motorola did you a favor as I'm fairly certain you would have it bricked on your first attempt.  If you know what you are doing, the locks in place are a non-issue.  They were cracked within a couple of days of release.

Give details of the problem. A statement such as "it doesn't work" conveys no information. If it did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: "I did A; I was expecting B; but I got C instead." Include the complete text of any error messages you saw and where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever. Also include the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any pertinent information, but it didn't help, include details.

  • Neo2 Platinum discovery - BIOSes above 1.5 don't like internal IDE cards

I upgraded my BIOS tonight from 1.5 to 1.B only to discover my system wouldn't boot. I thought it was a problem with my SATA drive, so I disconnected all my other drives, and it worked. Because I was having several other problems with this BIOS, even when it was working, I downgraded to 1.9, but the same thing happened: with all my hard drives connected, my system wouldn't boot into Windows. After the DMI prefetch check, it just sat there like a lame goose. I disconnected my hard drives one by one to see which was the culprit, only to discover that the two drives connected to my Promise internal ATA100 IDE card were causing the problem. If those two drives were not connected, the machine booted normally, but when they were connected, the machine hung at start up.
I proceeded to try this for 1.8 and 1.7 with the same results. Only 1.5 seemed to work with my IDE card. I switched around PCI slots, turned off my ethernet slots (I was intermittently getting a Realtek ethernet jack error, which would also prevent me from loading up. This even happened in 1.5, but disabling that got rid of the problem. I use wireless anyway.)
Anyone know why this is the case? I suppose that it is not inherently PCI IDE cards that the BIOSes don't like, but the existence of hard drives on external channels. Because if I disconnect the hard drives from the card, there is no problem, and the OS boots normally.
I have heard of one other person in this forum having this problem, but I don't have the luxury of plugging my extra hard drives in internally.
Thanks in advance for the help/experience.

No such app exisits or can exist.  Apple doesn't allow 3rd party apps to access core functions of the phone.  Time to get your phone replaced or repaired if assistive touch doesn't needs your needs.

Why does iTunes freeze up for minutes at a time when modifying INFO (CMD-i) ?  My files are not corrupted after it is done like many other threads i have readed.  Sometimes it's changing the title of a movie or editing the season and episode number of a TV show ect.....

    Yup same here
I am running the latest iTunes, the latest updates to the OS and on an iMac 3.4GHz Quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM and the music stored on local HDD.
Still locks up iTunes for between 2 minutes up to 20 minutes.
    Really annoying.

  • Asking the mod to lock this thread.

I don't know where to turn to. I don't think it belongs to fissue at microsoft dot com, and I can't use the Abuse button as no one is in violation of COC.
So, I am posting my " lock this
    thread " request here.
The thread in question has gone through 136 replies 235 Votes, and counting.
I don't think there is a computer matter that is so important that a 136 replies, and a highly questionable 235 Helpful Votes have not completely covered. Even a Homeland Security issue would have been settled with that many responses ( sarcastic
The only thing it will do now is occupying a spot which could have been used for a Real computer problem.
    This is just my opinion.
    Thank you.
    Adding............
It would be real nice if the admins/owner set up a separate Discussion forum where people who love to talk without end can spend their time there, and people who come to TechNet solely for helping others will not have to be bothered by such
    nonsense.

Well there are clearly a lot of people with opinions on where Microsoft should take the Windows user interface. I don't think that is surprising, and the discussion would seem to be on topic for that forum.
Is there any benefit in locking a thread just because it is very long? I would probably not post on a thread that is already that long as I would not expect many people to ever make it all the way down to read my post, but if I did would anyone be harmed?
I do agree that the points earned by the posts with many helpful votes are questionable. These opinion threads tend to generate large numbers of competing votes. Is the distortion of the (far from perfect) points system reason enough to lock threads like
this? I don't know (for that matter, I don't know if locking a thread prevents additional helpful votes).
[Edit in response to the suggestion of a separate forum for these posts]
Does the existence of one discussion thread with a very high post count make it very much harder to find
questions that need to be answered?

  • Why are the Apple mods deleting and locking threads?

I would like an answer as to why the mods are deleting and locking threads that have to do with the error that pervasive in the iPod 1.1 upgrade. It seems that Apple will not acknowledge it but some of us are trying to find an answer and Apple locks the thread and deletes another one. As paying customers, Apple should realize that it is us who keeps the lights on in Cupertino. I think a bit more respect to the paying customer is in order here.

Contrary to any belief you may have I can assure you that there are no attempts of covering up any alleged bugs in software or anything else in these fora.
Here's a reframe to your original question - The fact that the thread was locked means that the Hosts have seen the thread. It is reasonable therefore to conclude that they would have allerted the relevant people of the issue and referred them to that thread.

  • Firefox 34 and Norton Internet Security (Version 21 ff) Don't Like Each Other and It's Not the Toolbar!

I have discovered that Norton Internet Security (and Norton 360 as well) version 21 and after conflicts with Firefox version 33.0 and later. I have been running the latest Firefox 34 version. When I upgraded on two of my computers to the latest version of NIS (version 21) Firefox (version 34) froze; indeed it locked up the entire computer. I therefore installed Google Chrome and everything worked fine. I can reproduce this error with Firefox like the flip of a switch; it is very consistent! The conflict, by the way, does not go away by disabling the Norton toolbar. I want to continue to use Firefox, and not Chrome, but I don't want the browser to freeze the machine. I run Windows 7 Professional. Do you have any suggestions?

Oh... I spoke too soon. I went into my office today and ran Norton 360 (Version 21.6) and Firefox 34.0.5 thinking that all would be well because I shut off Hardware Acceleration. Boy, was I wrong. Norton 360 crashed with the Windows message: "Norton 360 has stopped working; it will be shut down." I immediately shut down the computer (even though someone was actually in my office at the time), rebooted, no longer ran Firefox and did a complete virus scan. All is well if I do not use Firefox 34. And so.... I am going to make my life easier and simply move over to Chrome at least on my office machine. I just don't see any other way out of this predicament. I do this reluctantly because Chrome is much slower than Firefox is especially the way I run it. Firefox 34 and NIS Version 21.6 just don't like each other.
Thanks for your help. It's been a good thread even though I could never figure this out.
    Needs more help.

Please, I really wnat to change my phone's sofeware back to IOS 7.0.6. I really don't like the IOS 7.1
PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE THE IOS 7.1 DRIVES ME INSANE!

Even though it wasn't me who started this thread i would like to say that i hate iOS 7.1 too
    They're back! The IOS haters.
When you get a call it has some small icons of reminding and message and one white ugly "slide to answer" bar.*** seriously?
People complained about the green bar in IOS 7.0.3. You can't please everyone with everything. Deal with it and move on. Or you can just get a Droid phone and suffer through the bizarre interface changes.
A lot of people would really appreciate a release with the old interface back.
People complained about every interface change that Apple has tried. As I said earlier, you can't please everyone with everything. The interface is what it is, learn it, deal with it, or move on to something more to your liking. I think they still make flip phones.

When I download firefox, using recommended setting, or my own, all the sub files/folders like plugins, modules, updater end up on the desktop as well as in the file location. And when I try to put them into the file location, they don't. And when I delete them, FireFox won't open. I tried deleting FireFox and reinstalling it multiple times, and a message pops up sometimes that says FireFox may not have installed correctly, so I follow the steps, but all the extra icons on my desktop don't go away. This has happened every time I have downloaded FireFox. The browser itself works, but I need to know how to get rid of these icons, but still be able to use FireFox. This is on a new computer, with Windows 7.

  • How do I go back to my old version of Firefox. 4 does not allow me to use two finger mousepad control to expand or contract my screen. Also I don't like the lack of a drop-down arrow next to the back/forward buttons.

I don't like to have to click and drag to see the drop down history of the back/forward buttons - this requires two fingers or a double tap and hold finger motion. MUCH easier to click and release and take my time to pick the screen I want to go back to, then click on that link with a separate motion.
I especially don't like that I can no longer expand and contract the screen with two finger motion on my mousepad!!!
Generally, I don't see any advantage to the new layout - and I have a slight preference to having my tabs closer to the screen rather than above the address bar, since I more frequently click on tabs than on the address bar. If you want to improve the view I would recommend combining the very topmost bar which is part of the window surround with the File Edit etc bar (and please keep File, Edit, View History, etc separated instead of putting them into a dropdown). This will allow the viewer one more line of text on a given webpage, and eliminate the wasted space which is only used to identify the window as FF and provide the close window buttons
PLEASE help me go back to the old version. It was perfect.

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles

Your iPhone and iPod can share the same iTunes account.  Apps can be freely shared and used by one or both devices.  You can't use money in your iTunes account to pay for your phone, but purchased apps can be used by both the iPod and iPhone.

  • My husband and I have the same Apple ID number so that we can both have access to an app we use.  I don't like the fact that our calendar, notes and email is also shared.  Is there a way to separate the things we want separate yet keep access to the cloud

My husband and I share the same Apple ID number because we both need access to an app that has a subscription and would be expensive for us to do separately.  We don't like that this shared ID number means we also share our calendar, note pages, email, etc....Is there a way to separate the things we don't want to share?

That would be my suggestion.  Just keep using the common one for purchases in the stores.  Then each get another AppleID using a free gmail, AOL, hotmail, MS Live or whatever email account.
Delete your current iCloud account and login with the new AppleID, and logout of Messaging and then backin with the new AppleID.  Now you have a shared iTunes/App store account, but completely separate, independent iCloud and iMessage accounts.
You can still share calendars if you wish to, even across separate accounts - http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2690

Go to iTunes and erase all the songs you don't want from your library or check the "Manually manage music and videos" box, erase all the songs from your iPod and only put the songs you want or check the "Sync only checked songs" box and check every single song in your library (Crtl+Click on a check box (if on PC)) and uncheck the ones you don't want.
