The iChat icon won't stop bouncing?!?!?!?

When I had Snow Leopard, I went to iChat preferences and set it so that the iChat icon wouldn't bounce when i got a message. That didn't work.
When I upgraded to Lion yesterday, I went to iChat preferences and set it so that the icon wouldn't bounce, but it still didn't work.
*** is wrong with this icon-bouncing ?????

You don't need to worry about the system disk icon appearing on the desktop in order to boot from the CD. Just insert the CD, and then restart your Mac while holding down the "C" key until you see the splash screen, then you can release the "C" key and let if finish booting.
Once you have done this you can run the disk utility as per the instructions in the FAQ I referenced.
One other thing that I can think of could be causing this problem. It could be that your desktop preference file is corrupted. What you could try is to navigate to your home/library/preferences folder and look for a file called com.apple.desktop.plist. Take that file and move it out of the library/preferences folder to some other location and then restart your computer and see if CD's will show on the desktop again.
If you do this you will have to reset all of the desktop preferences again. If it does not work you can move the file that you took out back in to the preferences folder and just have it replace the newer file.

• IChat icon will not stop bouncing

Hello all
Here is my problem ....

Thanks Mark

Hi,
Re 1)
Sometimes the apps or items listed as Login Items (System Preferences > Accounts > Your account > Login Items) can start up faster than some parts of the OS.
It is more noticeable with waking from Sleep.
Sleep (Set in the System Preferences > Energy Saver) is what happens if the computer is set to "Spin Down" after a certain amount of time.
This cuts all network Connections and on waking, re-establishing these can be slower then the apps that are open also waking leading to the app reporting no network.
Sometimes deleting the said App and re-adding it to the list will place it lower in the list and later in the Start up order (not always successful with faster processors)
Sort of 1b)
Do you have the Buddy list viewable on this Start up ?
If the Buddy List is Logged in but has had the Red Button used to hide the window iChat will tend to remember this at the next launch - the App Starts and the Buddy List is logged in (See iChat Menu > Accounts and and the Window Menu) but the buddy List's actual Window is not on view.
Re 2)
At this point is there any message popping up about iChat ?
If several apps have opened other windows in front of iChat (iChat is not the app listed in the menu Bar - not "front") then you may need to make iChat the "Front App" and check it's Window Menu at the bottom to see if it lists anything.
It may also pay to use the Amber button on all other windows (puts things in the DOCK so you can see any Alert.
Does clicking the icon bring the iChat app to the Front (Listed in the Menu Bar) ?
Re 3)
As you can see I suspect other things before we get this far.
Summary.
I still think iChat wants some Input to resolve an issue it has.
I have explained some possibles based on the new information - where iChat is in the Start Up process as a whole and if the Buddy List Window is Hidden, plus whether iChat and any message Alert is Fully "Front".
I have suggested that iChat be "lowered" in the Login Items list by removing it ad re-adding it.
A better test would be to take it out and see if it does it on a manual start.
I have suggested checking whether iChat is the "Front"/Menu Bar listed app and whether other windows are hiding a Alert Pop Up message.
NOTES.
I have this or something similar with Mail and iChat sometimes.
One or other will lose connection with the server and request I fill in the Password pop up that occurs.
Mail indicates the account in question with an icon.
This icon will go away for a few seconds even if you type in the wrong password.
iChat does not have such a visual clue.
In both cases if either app cannot connect to the server then the pop up comes back and the icon bounces again.
You did not say one way or the other about any pop up Alert message.
Try to remember I cannot see every mouse move, head nod, hand wave at the Screen you would use if I were sat there.
Imagine that you are telling your mother what you see over the phone as you do it.
Better still imagine I want as much detail as you would give to someone who has never used a phone before.
(I know it's pedantic )

• When pressing the ichat icon on my dock it wont open my ichat

my ichat wont open when clicking the ichat icon.

Hi,
For that to work the App has to have opened in the first place.
I did consider that the poster meant the account/Buddy list was not on view (but that iChat was in the menu bar) but it seemed safer to try launching iChat from the applications folder.

• The Archive Utility won't stop trying to unarchive

hi there,
i downloaded a zip drive yesterday and the unarchive utility won't stop. i pressed cancel, and the cancel button greyed out. i've gone to force quit and it doesn't do anything. i've tried to shut down the computer and it says the shut down was canceled by the archive utility. any suggestions?\
thank you!

try killing the process from Activity monitor.
if that doesn't help kill the loginwindow process that belongs to your user using Activity monitor. this will force an immediate user logout. if all else fails hold the power button to force a shutdown.

- Apps are locked to the account that purchased them. Thus it appears that yor sone purchased the app.
- To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

• The NYT website won't stop loading whenever it does an auto-update. While this loading continues, other websites are unresponsive until I force the loading to terminate. This started happening with FF 4.0.1.

When I do a manual refresh on certain sites like NY Times or CNN, or when sites like NYT periodically push an update through, the updates won't stop loading. It's as though the update never completes. The rotating circle icon on the affected tab just continues indefinitely. While this is happening, other websites that I try to open or update are either very slow or unresponsive.
My fix has been to force the update to terminate by using the red X button next to the website name. Then other websites respond normally but often the one that I have manually stopped becomes unresponsive.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in [[Safe mode]]:
* Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

Precisely why it's not an iPad, and why it doesn't cost very much. An Apple rep would tell you how to connect an iPad to every computer.

• HT4085 The volume icon won't leave the screen and I can't seem to reset the volume. Does anyone know how to fix this?

My iPad2 will not clear the volume icon from the screen no matter what I do. I've reset the ipad and nothing I do will make that icon go away and I can no longer control the volume. Am I missing something here, or does this warrant a trip to the Apple store?

The volume icon on the screen means that the pad thinks you are pressing the volume rocker on the side. Make sure that it is not being pressed by a case, or a dent, or anything else. Make sure it rocks back and forth freely without getting stuck.
If it moves freely, and if you have already done a full reboot, then a trip to the store may be in order.

• After updating to Firefox 5 on a Windows 7 PC the bookmarks icon won't stay on the toolbar and I can't click it to get a bookmarks column on the left side of the screen, how do I fix it?

There was no bookmarks icon on the toolbar. I used View > Toolbars> customise to put various icons on the toolbar all of which were visible using "customise". On going back to Firefox all the other icons remained visible but the Bookmarks Icon disappeared leaving no means of getting a bookmarks column on the left of the screen when using Firefox.

Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
* Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout" and check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
* If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
* If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" or other items that are missing in the toolbar palette or on a toolbar then click the "Restore Default Set" button
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"

• IPhone 4S not sure if charging but the charging sound won't stop and iTunes detects it?

Hi, I've never had a problem like this in the past with my 4S, but I have had issues charging it. At the end of the day, it's always worked, but now I don't think it will. I've connected my cable to my USB and to an adapter on my computer and a plug in the wall, but both times the phone does not stop indicating that it is charging with it's little jingle or it's vibrating when I turn the sound off, and when I try to turn it on by pressing the LOCK button and both the HOME and the LOCK button, it doesn't work.
I connected my iPhone 4S to my computer, and iTunes has detected my phone, but it's still not turning on and the charging sound will not stop. What should I do?

• Iphoto Revolving icon won't stop

I-photo has constant revolving icon (application start-up processing). Will not stop. Can view photos in slideshow, preview, manipulate photos, but will not let me change theme, settings, music functions. Removed preference files, cache user file. Any help out there! Thanks

Did you delete the receipts before reinstalling?
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

• Icons won't stop jiggling

I have an iphone 4s. When I go into the jiggle mode where I can move and delete app icons on the home screen, the movement and delete works fine. But when I try to exit the mode with the home button, it does not work. I have to press the sleep button and then unlock again to get the icons to stop jiggling. The home button works fine for other functions.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried rebooting the phone (hold down both Home button and On/Off button until the apple appears on the screen)?
