The idea of changing to a Mac... Am I crazy?

I am need of an upgrade to my desktop and have been spending time trying to decide on what type of PC desktop.
Today, I saw a MAC with it's sexy LED monitor and money wise it is not out of the question to go to a MAC instead of a new PC Desktop. I have not experience with MACs.. But the monitor looks so nice.
The system is an iMac MC511LL/A, intel i5, 2.8 ghz, 4mb (I would bump to 8mb).   I would go with an i7 intel processor (maybe a 3.2gh) if I get a new PC Desktop but I have heard MAC is a bit more efficient so would compare.
I would be using it primarily for Lightroom... I am not in a rush to go to CS5 from CS3 but I will have to see if I could upgrade to a MAC version vs. complete new purchase.   Unlike many people, I could live without CS for a while but the is a consideration.... I would have to purchase a calibration device/software.
Does anyone have any feedback on the learning curve to a MAC, any cost items that I may not be considering.
I would probably just keep my P4, XP, desktop with 24'Dell... and keep our PC/Laptop.   I would use my current printer with the MAC, current external hard drives.
Would the LR catalog have to go through a one time conversion?   Any issues with export catalog from the MAC and edit on the PC/Laptop, then import from.
What "got you" am I missing and should I just forget abuot going MAC ?

Make sure you compare apples with apples.
If you get any old commodity PC it may not compare well with even an entry-level Mac. This is opinion based on personal experience. OEMs have to cut corners to offer the attractive prices people go on about. But there is no such thing as a free lunch, and a fair comparison of decent Mac kit with a similarly spec'd OEM Windows PC will almost always work out to about the same cost, give or take a few hundred dollars each way. (Try it and see.)
A Mac with a real operating system (i.e., one that runs OS X) used to be your best and only choice if you wanted to run a commercial OS. However, Microsoft has really got it together with Windows 7, and you will be happy with either. Previously (as in, when OS X was first released until recently) it was a no-brainer the the Mac offered the superior environment from the point of view of usability and engineering. Previously, Apple's main problem was that they had no real competition on the desktop.
One piece of advice: while a Mac works fine out of the box, if you get a Microsoft-based workstation reinstall the OS from scratch. The one part of the experience with OEM equipment is that your typical turnkey Windows PC is a cesspool of bloatware, taskbar stupidity and pointless services (along with 700 stickers on the case advertising how awesome it is they have some brand of chip inside, and how cool it is that some companies managed to hire a designer to design a sticker.) Factor in the cost of your own copy of the OS, or demand the OEM copy of the Windows media when purchasing the computer. Remember that the roughly 247 versions of Windows 7 out there have different advanced capabilities. You may not get the ideal version when buying it from an OEM.
You will also have to pay attention to the specifications and acronyms they use to sell commodity PCs. Any new Mac that you would want to run Lr on is 64-bit clean, ready to go, with adequate power and video to do most anything with your images. This is not necessarily the case with the literally thousands of OEM PCs out there. Do your homework! (Another cost you might want to factor into the TCO of a purchase like this.) You can sometimes save a little more by assembling the computer yourself after doing all the homework required to make sure the parts all match, but you should take care to spend where you will really care in a few months one the gleam on your new purchase has dimmed: solid construction, quiet components and cool running. This is where higher end turnkey PCs from /any/ vendor (Apple or not) can be a big win. Good industrial design is slightly intangible, but worth spending money on.
And whatever you do, factor in the cost of backups. Both Windows 7 and OS X offer easy, automated backup solutions. Use them. And then use another method for a second backup. Because it isn't a matter of if your drives will fail, but when.

Cannot run a servlet in the IDE.

Hi Vijay
You need to create the servlets under WEB-INF->classes tree.
Here is the structure of a simple web module shown in FIle System tab of IDE
-/export/home/JSEApps/MyApp
-- WEB-INF -->classes-->mypackage-->MyServlet
-- MyJsp
Once you created and compiled the servlets like this, right click on WEB-INF folder in the IDE and change the context root property to /myapp . Again right click on WEB-INF and deploy.
Now you can access the servlet with http://server:port/myapp/servlet/ MyServlet

I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. Despite using Migration Assistant, a large chunk of my recent emails and nearly all of my wife's emails have disappeared in transit. Strangely, emails from my distant past are still there. Time Machine is no help; the messages may be on my backup disc but they're behind an invisible icon. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Your purchases are permanently tied to the Apple ID (account) used to purchase them. They can't be moved to another account and you can merge accounts. You can start making new purchases with your iCloud ID if you want, but you will end up with two sets of purchases under two different IDs, adding further complication to your life.
Also, your @icloud email address is an alias of your existing @me address; emails sent to either address will be routed to the same inbox. You can decide which one you want to use as your default (as discussed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5441) but you can't separate them.

Thank you Roger, your solution gave me the courage to sign out of Systems Preferences. The pop up told me it was going to delete my contact and other information from my mac, so I was hesitant to do that. Well I did as you directed and I was able to sign in with my new apple id and I did not lose the information the pop up threatened I was going to. So again thank you. It is the little things that make a big difference sometimes.

How do i change the default itunes account on my mac book?

If you mean that Find My Phone is asking for a password to a different Apple ID to your current Apple ID.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID using your current password, you don’t need access to this address if it’s previously been used with your Apple ID, once you have saved these details enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone" and delete the account from your device.
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, save it once again and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

The password used to log in to a user account remotely is the same as you would use to log into it locally. You can also use your Apple ID, so try that.

When Exporting a Crystal Report to Excel format all of the dates get changed when viewed on Mac version of Excel

We're using Crystal Reports 10 and when we export a report from the Crystal Viewer using either the MS Excel 97-2000 option or the MS Excel 97-2000 (Data Only) option, the date columns on the report appear as expected on a PC version of Excel, however, most of the users at our company use Macs so when they open the same report on the Mac version of Excel all of the dates show up as 2011 or 2012 dates eventhough they are suppose to be 2008 dates. We've tried to just open the report after the export process and then do a "Save As" but get the same result. The date columns all appear to be formatted as Date. The dates on the Crystal Viewer appear as expected when viewed on a Mac. The users are running Excel for Mac OS-X Service Release 1.0. Any idea why this may be happening and is there a solution to this problem? Thanks!

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

tried on a different mac. The same problem exists.
If that is the case, its extremely unlikely you have a bad USB cable on the seagate, rather as I mentioned earlier a bad SATA bridge card.
If the Seagate 1TB USB external wont open on either Mac and youve verified same (try a diff. USB cable if you have one however this is nearly never the case),....then to get the data off that HD (unless it is dead which is also extremely unlikely),......then you would need to extract the HD from its case and insert same into either a HD dock or USB HD enclosure.
8 out of 10 seemingly dead inopperable 1-3+ year old external HD are perfectly fine, rather the cheap 50 cent SATA bridge card fries and dies (alas)
