The image trace feature

Is the image trace feature any better at tracing scanned business cars and newsprint ads in order to extract a logo?  Clients never seem to have clean copy to supply me with.

Rovert,
For clean artwork it is normally recommended to recreate everything using the appropriate Tools, such as the Pen Tool and the tools to create specific kinds of shapes (Rectangle, Ellipse, etc).
More details will most likely give more answers.

I scanned an image and want to use the image trace tool, but it doesn't pick up all the lines.  Is there a way to darken the lines before using the image trace tool?  Help!

If the scan is in B&W, then play with the Threshold setting here
If it's in Color, then you will have to open the scan in a Raster editing software (like Photoshop) and play with the Brightness/Contrast settings to make the lines bolder.

  • Why is the "Custom" option grayed out in the Image Trace drop down menu?

I'm going crazy here. On two different versions of Illustrator (CS6 on Windows 7 and CC on Windows 8.1) I'm trying to customize the options on an image trace from the drop down menu. On both versions I can't click Custon and when I tried to use the presets it just completes the action and doesn't allow for tweaks.
I've used three different file formats (PNG, JPEG, TIFF) and tried embedding and copying and pasting with no luck. In past versions this was never a problem. What is going on here?

Just select the Image trace panel from the window menu and then customize it.

  • Is it possible to adjust or control the Image Tracer selection's colors?

    Hi there,
I need to turn several of my photographs into vector images for textile printing.
Is it possible to somehow adjust or control the Image Tracer selection to other colors like 10-11 (or other), instead of either 6 or 16 ?  If yes, please explain.
    Thank you,
    OC

Sure. Tweak the settings, save it as a preset:

  • How to image trace multiple objects at once on Illustrator CC?

    Hello,
This may sound like a stupid question, but I am having troubles trying to image trace multiple objects all in one go.
I'm currently working on Illustrator CC and I remember this process being a lot easier to do on Illustrator CS5.
I have a typical job where I create client specific barcodes on a separate program, and then bringing them into Illustrator to vectorize.
When I used to do it in CS5, all I had to do was release clipping masks, select all 50 or so barcodes, then Image Trace - and voila, al of my barcodes were vectorized at once - easy.
I now have to vectorize about 120+ barcodes and Illustrator CC is only letting me select & image trace one barcode at a time. There has to be a better way, and I'm hoping someone here can help.
(I would open up CS5 and do it from there, but my work computer was recently replaced with a newer iMac and was only provided with Illustrator CC)
    Thanks!

Not sure what your barcode-specific challenges and methods may be, but my general aversion to the image trace feature compels me to suggest that you just create the barcodes in vectors in the first place. I do that using Terry Burton's free online barcode generator.

  • Preserving 'White' areas, but not backgrounds, in an image trace

    Hi there all
I've got a little graphic that I'm working on at the moment. I am trying to trace it using the Image Trace feature in illustrator.
Everything's hunky dory apart from the fact that the original graphic has a lot of white features on it that I want to preserve. These white bits are not bordered so, in the main page of illustrator, they merge with the white background. When I go to use Image Trace, I can either select "Ignore white" which leaves out all of this white detailing, or I can deselect it which means that the trace then includes the white background and the whole image is set into an annoying box.
Does anyone know how I can remedy this? I know in Photoshop, there's that checked background that shows when your work surface is empty. Is there a way of getting this same thing in Illustrator?
    Thanks!
    CF

    CF,
It rather depends on the image.
With Illy, you can use View>Show Transparency Grid or View>Show Grid to see whether there is a background, just as in Photoshop.
In that way you can get rid of that non colour appearing as white, but it will not be included in Image Trace because it is not (included in the image).
But if the image itself contains a white background, Image Trace will be unable to discern that from any other part of the image.
So you may need to have the image in a format without the white background, such as PNG24 instead of JPEG, or with another colour as background.

  • Connect missing lines in image trace

I am teaching myself Illustrator and I came across the image trace feature in CS6. I am able to to copy my drawing and do the image trace feature, but I am having trouble connecting missing lines to do a color fill without selecting the background area.
Now, I may sound dumb, so please forgive me, but is there a way to connect missing lines using the image trace, or pen feature, that will allow me to select a specific area and do a color fill with selecting the background as well?

To upload an image, click on the camera icon in the toolbar for this forum.
The direct selection tool will select all points if you click on the object. But you can click on a single point, shift select other points or drag select. If there is another object below the object you want to edit, use the move tool and double click on the object to put in isolation mode. In that mode only that object is editable.(click the gray bar above to get out of isolation mode or press escape key)
When using the direct selection tool make sure there is not a plus side of the cursor, if there is that's the wrong tool. (just press the lowercase a on keyboard)
To join to end points(they must be end points and only two points are allowed at a time)
Use the direct selection tool (lowercase a)
    Select one point
Hold shift and select second point
Object>Path>Join (ctrl-j on windows and cmd-j on mac) or if you have a two button mouse you can right click and choose join from the menu.

  • Missing Image Trace Plugin in Illustrator CC?

The Image Trace feature is missing in my subscription version of Adobe Illustrator CC. The words appear in the dropdown menu, but the flyout menu does not list the usual functions, and the few that it does list are greyed out.

  • Actions and Image Trace

    Hello,
I'm doing some work that requires line art to be created from simple grey-scale images. I am using Adobe Illustrator Creative Cloud as well. What I'm wanting to do is create an action that utilizes the image trace feature to help speed up the processes. The problem is, I cannot change the settings in the image trace section inside (it just uses the default setting in the image trace) which just creates a white image (usually a square) and doesn't actually trace around my image. What I'm wanting to do is be able to select the silhouette preset and have that command be sent to my action macro.
Here is what I'm wanting my Action to look like
    - Rasterize Layer
         - Defined Settings
    - Image Tracing
         - Switch to Silhouette settings rather than Default (this is where I can't change the settings)
         - Make image trace
    - Expand Image
It's not that complex, but I can't seem to get anything to work. I've done a lot of hunting around and I really haven't been able to find anything to help get me started on trying to figure this out. If anyone has any insight please let me know!
    Thanks!

    PhotoLady,
If you have Windows, I believe they are if nothing to the contrary is indicated.
May I ask which 8 and which 4?
It seems that there may be something else causing the issues.
Unfortunately, our forum staff friends have been absent since the forum change.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • How to avoid transparent background converting to white in smart object(psb )when image trace High Fidelity as we have the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace.

i have a psd image file in photoshop cc 2014 that has transparent background layer. I wanted it to convert to vector. The best option i saw was to first convert it to smart object in photoshop via Layer->Smart Objects-> Convert to smart Object. then exported it to a psb. Then i opened the file in illustrator and applied the image trace tool but the transparent background got converted to white but i had the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace. But in case of High Fidelity Conversion, the ignore white option is not available, what should I do now?

after using  high fidelity image trace  i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

  • When I Image Trace in CS6 and then expand it shifts the art?

For my work I use the Image Trace a lot. When I Image Trace something and then expand it, it shifts the art over. Every once in a while I wouldn't mind but it does it every time and I have to go back and nudge it back into place by setting the original layer as a template and then looking at it in Outline mode. Here is an example of the shift...
I never had this issue in any other version of Illustrator and I have been working with it since 8. When I have multiple items to Image Trace on one of my jobs and I Image Trace on each one individually, it does it in random directions. Sometimes down and to the right, sometimes up and to the left and sometimes it doesn't do it at all.
Here are the settings I am using...
I am image tracing 1200ppi bitmaps and I don't need it to be any more exact than it is now becuase I am then offsetting it .05" and using that as a relief for our products. But ignoring the shift would make one of our CNC machines mill through the art. Anything to stop "THE SHIFT" would be great. I am using up precious time in my pre-production schedule to be constantly doing this.
    Sincerely,
    Jason

I just checked that and it seems to have no effect. it still expands off center. Here is a screenshot of it after Image Trace with Pixel Preview on...

  • Image Trace, high resolution

What are some tips for getting a clean (high definition, full color) Image Trace on a photo?

Like Monika said.  But use the image trace panel in the windows tab.  There are advanced features that you can adjust and tweak to your liking.  Image trace tends to be specific to the photo so you'll need to play around a little bit to get the desired effect you want.

  • Action batch export issue with image trace

So, currently I'm working on batch processing jpeg sequences using illustrator's image trace and distortion effects. I have batch exported the image traces of the sequences via Adobe bridge.  Now I'm trying to create an action which opens the .ai files containing those image traces, apply a graphic style to the trace, and export a png from that.  I'm banging my head against the wall trying to get this to work right now. If I do the steps (step by step... not using a recorded action) I want on a single file, it works great, but the moment I batch export using the action I've created, it puts the original .png image that the image trace was linked to, on top of the image. The result is a bunch of .png exports that look exactly like my original image sequence.  If I add a "save" function to the action and open the resulting .ai files, I can see that the image trace vectors are in the file. The "linked png" however visible on the layer above those vectors.  Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? How do I get rid of that pesky linked image.
Also, for anyone who might be thinking that it has something to do with expanding the image trace before applying effects, this issue I'm running into, I've determined, is happening higher up in the hierarchy of the actions... If I simply make an action to open the image trace illustrator file and save it back out, the same issue occurs... placing the .png "linked file" on top of the vector image.
While I'm at it, I might as well ask if anyone knows how to change the illustrator default image trace preset.... Without being able to change it, or much less specify in the action sequence that I'd like to use a user created image trace preset rather than the default setting, it's greatly overcomplicating my workflow. Makes what could easily be one-step batch processing into two. Seems pretty silly if you ask me.
Please, if you guys have any insights on this, let me know. It's super frustrating... By the way, if you're wondering what type of effect I'm going for, the idea (as well as some explanation into their own process) starts at 12:44 of this video (http://vimeo.com/77427470).
    THANKS!

Just wanted to let you guys know, for anyone who might be having my same issue... My home computer, even after a fresh install of Illustrator, was still placing the linked jpeg over the traced vector shapes when batch exporting... I did however find a workaround.  Rather than using Bridge CS6 for the batch image tracing, I used Bridge CS5 to trace in Illustrator CS5. Then, I used Illustrator CS6 to batch export an action that imported and applied an effect to those image traced sequences.  When you do this, it forces you to expand the tracing on import (because of the difference in Illustrator versions I'm assuming).  This way, when you batch run the action, it's already working with expanded vector shapes.  Not sure why this works, but it does.
Also, I was having some issues getting Illustrator to apply the graphic style when batch exporting. I got it to work by copying an object with that particular graphic style to the clipboard, then adding in the action I was running a "paste" command, followed by a "clear" command.  I can only assume that Illustrator was having issues loading custom graphics styles while batch exporting. The paste/delete technique is annoying, but gets it done.
Anyways. Just wanted to check in on this one. I'm happy I was able to muscle my way through it all.

  • Going from PSD file to Illustrator image trace: Background not transparent

Okay guys so a friend has drawn me a "man" in Psd and I want to convert it in AI because I don't want it to look very pixely (great scientific term). The man is on a transparent layer as below:
I was then able to bring it into illustrator fine. I used the image trace function and got some great results. The image looks more as I intended.(below). The only problem is the transparent layer goes and is replaced by a white layer. This "man" needs to be placed on top of other elements and so the bg needs to be transparent. I've scoured the forums but couldn't find a conversion topic specific to the image trace function. Is there a way to do this without the bg turning white? Am I importing the file wrong into illustrator? Is it the settings of the image trace function? I'm very new to illustrator so would very much appreciate all the help I can get.
    Cheers,
    Cam.

look at your trace settings and (in CS5 at least) tick Ignore white.
