The Incredible Disappearing Address Book

This just started today. I have Address Book.app running, but when I click on the address book icon in the dock, nothing happens. Same thing if I select Address Book in the App Switcher (Cmd-Tab). The only way to see my address book again is to quit the app, and restart it. Then it is normal for a while. When I first saw this (this morning), I was running 10.7.0, but I still see it after upgrading to 10.7.1.
24" iMac (Mid 2007, 2.8 GHz C2D, 2 Gig Memory) running Lion.

Same here.  Been on hold with apple care. They admit the address book is a weak program.  No answer...if I get one I will post.

  • Disappearing Address Book Contacts

This is a duplicate or my response to another similar problem, but I think this problem should have it's own topic.
My Address book contacts have been occasionaly disappearing, I would open Address book and all my contacts would be gone except for the "Apple" and "Me". And I would end up restoring from a backup, which I been doing fequently when this problem first started.
Recently I discovered what the problem is. I have an external drive connected and somehow my Address book contacts have defaulted to being stored on the external drive in a folder I had created for some temporary work some time ago. When I noticed it was still there (some time later) I trashed it.
It took a while for me to make the connection that when I deleted the folder, the address contacts would be gone. Because I wouldn't use my Address Book for days or maybe weeks afterwards
I finally realized that this "temporary" folder kept mysteriously reappearing, so when I checked, it contained the same folder structure as the <user>/library/application support/Address Book/ and sure enough that is where my address book is storing my contacts.
This has me baffled, there are no preference settings to even change the default storage location (or I couldn't find them) Looking at com.apple.addressbook.plist has no storage folder either.
Any ideas on how this can be corrected? Or even how it happened?
Little more information. This is my primary user account which has FileVault turned on and also syncs with dotmac to my MacBook. The sync works fine by the way, but those contacts should be within the secure volume.
My only thought for a fix would be to back up my user folder (data only, no settings). Delete the account. And then recreate the account and restore my data, but I'd rather not do that if I don't have to, I'm hoping for the quick and simple fix.
    What do yo think?

    Replying to my own post.
I think I've fixed my problem by simply disconnecting the external drive. With the drive disconnected, Address Book came up empty again. So I restored from my backup and checked that the files updated in the correct (home) folder.
    <user>/Library/Application Support/Address Book/
Still haven't any clue as to how my contacts suddenly started saving themselves on my external drive to begin with.

  • Disappearing Address Book icon

    Hi folks,
the icon for address book has disappeared from the dock, leaving a blank space - hovering over the space shows that the programme is still there and will open when clicked, but no sign of the icon. Have no idea what to do to get it back (and yes, I tried the on/off panacea!). Any suggestions? Am running latest version (updates up to date) Snow Leopard on a 6 month old MacBook Pro.

    John,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
One of the first things to try is restarting your computer.
If that is unsuccessful, try refreshing the Dock plist file. Go to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences folder, find the com.apple.dock.plist, drag it to your desktop, log out/in, or restart and let us know what happens.
Your dock will revert to default settings, and hopefully once again display the Address Book icon.

  • The Microsoft Exchange Address Book was unable to log on to Exchange

I am currently migrating a exchange 2007 to exchange 2013.
Exchange 2013 is installed on a seperate Windows Server 2012 server.
Exhange 2007 is installed on a  seperate Windows Server 2003 R2 server.
I have moved some mailboxes from exchange 2007 to exchange 2013 and also created some new mailboxes on the exchange 2013 server itself.
OWA, ActiveSync , IMAP are all working correctly for those mailboxes , but I am not able to connect to outlook with the exchange option (local connection).
    Outlook 2013:
When I use autodiscover to connect to the exchange server step 1 & 2 are working correctly (establishing network connection & searching for mailbox settings) but on the 3th step (logging on to the mail server) I receive the following error
The name cannot be resolved. The Microsoft Exchange Address Book was unable to log on to Exchange. Contact you system administrator if the problem persists.
When I filll in the exchange server manually (using the normal servername server.hq.corp.domain.local not the guid version) the check name resolves correctly and the profile creation is finishing ok. But when I try to open outlook with that profile it gives
    me the following errors :
    with cached exchange mode selected:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook windows. The set of folders cannot be opened.
You must connect to Microsoft Exchange with the current profile before you can synchronize your folders with your Outlook data file (.ost)
    with cached exchange mode deselected:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook windows. The set of folders cannot be opened.
Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange server is down for maintenance
When I use the Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer it fails on the following step:
Testing the address book "Check Name" operation for user [email protected] against server [email protected]
An error occured while attempting to resolve the name. Elapsed Milliseconds: 91 Additional Details: The address book bind operation failed with status -2147221231. NSPI Status 2147746065

    Hi,
Please run the following command in Exchange server to get Exchange GUID:
    Get-Mailbox UserA | FL Identity,ExchangeGuid
Then open Outlook, click File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Change (If you can’t open Outlook, go to Control Pane > Mail to change it). In Server Settings, import the [email protected] into the Server box and click Check Name
    to have a try.
If the name is checked successfully but also can’t open the profile, please close Outlook. In the Start menu, Run command (Windows key + R), type or paste
outlook.exe /resetnavpane  (Note: Make sure there is a space between the words.)
Then press Enter (or OK button) to restart Outlook

  • How to move old address book (XP) into new computer (8.1) as the existing default address book.

I have exported the address book in LDIF format and have also found the abook.mab file in my old XP computer. My new W8.1 address book is totally empty. I don't know where to find the Profile folder on W8.1 and when I import the LDIF it creates a new address book folder which I don't want. I just want everything in the default address book.

Open the newly created address book. Click on one contact to select it. Hit control+a to select them all. Drag and drop them on the personal Address Book folder to move them there.

  • Unable to retrieve e-mail addresses that are in the server's address book

Since I installed the new version of Firefox (4.0) I am unable to retrieve any of the e-mail addresses that are duly indicated in the server's address book.
In summary, beforehand I could type the 1st letter of an e-mail address and Firefox would remember it and propose it upfront!
What can I do to solve this issue please!?

Hi gbman, sorry I missed your reply, I took someone out to a birthday dinner.
A good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
    Firefox > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site,
Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
After clearing the cookies, reload the page and try logging in again. Does that help?

  • The Disappearing Address Book

I recently acquired a Nokia 6120 and looked into syncing it with my MacBook Pro. I downloaded the plug in from http://the.taoofmac.com/space/Nokia/6120
    and followed the instructions.
All worked a treat until I tried to locate my Address Book (as in iCal and Mail I can see the updated contacts - but cant edit) and it was nowhere to be found.
Not in Applications, not in trash, not locaable thru spotlight. I can still use it's info in both mail and iCal (it even updates contacts entered into mobile phone) but am completely stumped.
Is it somewhere hidden? or do I need to reinstall it? if so, how?

Seems like you've somehow inadvertently deleted your Address Book application. To get it back you'll have to re-install it from your original Leopard Install DVD:
    1) Download Pacifist
    2) Insert your original Mac OS X Installation Disk
    3) Open Pacifict and click 'Open Apple Install Discs'
    4) Wait while it loads the packages
    5) In the window that appears, type 'Address Book' into the Find dialog at the top and press return.
    6) Click once on the 'Address Book.app' it finds, then click 'Install' at the top of the window.
    7) Follow the instructions to install it.
    8) Then download and install the latest Mac OS X Combo Updater for your Mac from Apple, to update Address Book to the very latest version.

  • Disappeared Address Book

Hi, I was wondering if someone can help me restore the address book. I installed the Leopard and I just noticed that my address book is missing. I had an icon in my dock and I just tried to access it and it gives me a question mark. I checked Time Machine to the beginning of the install and it was not there either.
I sync my iPhone everyday and it seems to sync fine. I just restored the iPhone because it died and got a replacement. It synced fine so the data must be ok but the application is not there. Searching it on Spotlight and it's not on the computer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Hi. Thanks for the help. However, it's not even in the Application folder. It's no where. I did a search via Spotlight and it's no where in my hard drive. It just disappeared. Any other thought?

  • When I try to add an email address (by clicking on the address and slecting the 'Add to Address book' option the email addrss does not stay in my address book

When adding an email address to my address book often it will stay in the address book until I close Thunderbird then it disappears and it won't pop up as a valid address when I am composing a note.

This usually means that the address book data file is corrupt.
I'd suggest you export your misbehaving address book to an LDIF file, delete the original address book then re-import its data from the LDIF file.
Note that you won't be allowed to delete either ''Personal Address Book'' (PAB) nor ''Collected Addresses'' (CA) within Thunderbird. You'll have to close Thunderbird, open its profile and delete:
    ''abook.mab'' for PAB, or
    ''history.mab'' for CA.
When you next run Thunderbird, it'll create a new empty address book to replace the one you deleted. Import your address to a new temporary address book, then move the Contacts (drag-and-drop) into the preferred address book.

  • Disappearing address book on my mac when connected to iCloud

I do not necessarily understand how to phrase things but let me give you steps.
    MacBookPro/Lion and iPad v1
    have Time Machine backups
Activate iCloud on the Mac and within 4 seconds all the address items disappear
Log in to iCloud in Safari. Lo and behold my address book is empty.
Restore address book on the MBP, log into iCloud and intentionally deselct "contact" but things still disappear.
My impression is the orientation is mixed up.  The MBP is "master" and feeds the cloud in order to provide the same to the iPad.
OT: The situation started while attempting to help a friend who had a bad Win7 to iCloud experience. She ditched Win 7, went to an iMac and when migrating to her cloud account we realize we still have the mess from last fall. Trying to figure out how to "erase" the trash and add fresh content.

  • Disappearing Address Book!

I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but Address Book seems to have disappeared... what should I do to get it back? I've searched my whole computer using spotlight, which couldn't find it. And then I tried going to Mail, opened the address panel, and then right clicked an address to edit it, but Address Book still wouldn't open. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Zeb

You can reinstall Address Book as described here:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
If the version of the system software on your installation disks is earlier than what you’re using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, to bring Address Book back in sync with the rest of the system:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel

  • How do I get name in Mail to be the same as Address book?

Just wondering if there was a way for the name that shows up when I get an e-mail to be the same as the name I have on that person's contact card in Address book?
For example say I have a Contact card for someone named Alexander, but in Address book I just have them listed as Alex. But every time I get an e-mail from them it comes in as Alexander (which I assume happens cause that's how they have filled in their information on their e-mail account) But I just want the e-mail to show up as coming from Alex. Does anyone know if you can do this?
    Thanks

That's what I thought.... Although when I log on to Mobile Me through the internet the sender's name there appears just like it does in my address book, so I thought there would be a way to set it in mail.

  • How can i print the e-mail address book

I need to be able to share the address book. How can I print the contents

There is no good way that I have found to print them directly from Thunderbird.
The best way that I have found is to export the address book to a comma separated file, .csv file, then open that with Excel or Open Office, format the file like you want and print from there.
The added benefit of doing this is now you have a backup file of your address book in case something bad happens.
The Export command is under Tools in the Address Book window.

  • Is it possible to change the size of the Picture in Address Book

Hi, the contact pictures in the Address Book are way to small, is there the possibility to show them bigger??
    Thanks
    MacBook White 1,83 - 80GB HD - 2GB - EX-RSS   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

No, I don't think so. When you put a picture on the card you can control what part of the picture is used, but there is no control for the subsequent size.
You could try using OS X Feedback and ask them to change it in the next release ...
