"The installation was interrupted before iTunes could be installed"
For several months now I have tried unsuccessfully to install iTunes on my laptop computer. The older versions worked, with several bugs, but they worked nonetheless. After installing EITHER iTunes or QuickTime, I get the messages:
"The installation was interrupted before iTunes could be installed" or "The installation was interrupted before QuickTime could be installed". The result is that NOTHING has been installed on my harddrive. I have read over many previous tech support posts on this forum and have tried many of the proposed solutions to other peoples' problems.
This isn't necessarily an error message because it doesn't 'popup' after installation, but rather is on the iTunes+QuickTime screen that begins by saying "the iTunes for Windows installer has completed". Immediately underneath is where I get "The installation was interrupted before iTunes could be installed". Followed by "the system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run the installation again." (no ****?). My only option at this point is to click "Finish", which takes me back to the desktop with no sign of iTunes or anything.
Just noticed the post below mine solved this problem. Now additional problems have arisen...

I absolutely can't get either installation to finish. I have tried all the suggestions on the Apple website. Windows XPOh, one more thing. If this proves to work, you must configure your Firewall to not block iTunes from launching. What will happen is, you will download iTunes and Qucktime and when you go to launch it, it won't open. That would be because that firewall is blocking it. Post back and let me know if you have Norton, I can post the instructions on how to configure it to allow iTunes and Quicktime.

I am trying like **** to download itunes 10.6.3 (64 bit - Windows 7) and I keep getting "the installer was interrupted before the requested operations for iTunes could be completed. Your systems has not been modified." I NEED HELP, PLEASE!

What do I do when I am trying to install my new version of itunes, and it says this: The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured. Errors occurred during installation. Your system has not been modified.
I had this, and after a large number of fruitless attempts, I had to reload Windows, which solved it. This was of course a real pain, but I had to do it since updating iTunes was necessary in order to get the new iOS version. But before doing such a drastic thing, you could try to restore Windows to a previous point in time by picking a restore point. This of course presumes that you really have some issues with your Windows (which I had) and that you can make a decent guess on when the system was ok (which I couldn't), i.e that you can decide a good date to restore to.

Arghhhhh!! I've tried different browsers and various other things suggested on other posts to no availOk people, I think I have found the solution !
If you click on the start button from your desktop screen.
Then in the "search programs and files" field type : apple software update - you can find the apple installer.
Click on the apple software update line and let the machine run it's course. I recommend updating whatever it wants to , ie: safari 5, quicktime, itunes....
I then restarted my computer and it seems to be working now !

this is all i get at the end of each install attempt for iTunes! it will not download and i don't have a firewall up.

I began this trouble shooting exercise by selecting Download Only through the Apple Update applet. Running the msi manually did not resolve the problem. In fact, it was more frustrating because the download package would disappear after running even though it failed, and I had to download it again. "Cleanup" I suppose. <frown>
I followed advice to remove the Apple Software Update program, reboot and re-run the msi. That did not resolve the failure.
I then followed advice to set permissions for Administrators on registry key HKLM\Software\Micorosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Com ponents
then reboot and run the update msi again. This also did not resolve the failure.
I downloaded the installer from the Apple download site as though it were a fresh install, and - voila! - it installed correctly and all content and settings were preserved. Hopefully that is all that is needed, not the steps above. Let me know! http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ -
I tried everything and iTunes is still not installing. And I keep receiving that message and this one: There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Please Help?!
Ok people, I think I have found the solution !

I've been having trouble with my computer ever since I turned it back on after leaving for six months and now every time I try to install certain things or update things it says there's an error that occurs and it's keeping me from downloading stuff like Google Chrome and iTunes. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm running windows xp 32 bit.
I am having a similar problem, except I'm running Vista 32 bit. I haven't had issues with any other software but iTunes is giving me no end of trouble. The problem started when I tried updating to the .4 version of iTunes when it first came out. I could still use the program and transfer data from iTunes to my iPhone so I didn't worry too much about it. Recently though I wanted to upgrade my iPhone software but received a message saying I need to upgrade my iTunes before I can upgrade my iPhone. After a few tries iTunes won't even RECOGNIZE my iPhone. I keep getting an error that the mobile device recognition isn't working.
I tried uninstalling iTunes and installing the new download directly from the iTunes website. I used Chrome, Mozilla, and Internet Explorer with the same results. I think my computer may be corrupted and I need to wipe the harddrive. I really don't want to get to that point but if someone smarter then me doesn't have answer soon I think that is my only option. -
Installer is being run as admin. Bonjour service is installed and running.
The lack of information is a bit frustrating... nothing in event viewer that I can see..For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Ok, so have tried again and again over days to install itunes again but keep getting same message, when reading through apple support I deleted and uninstalled old itunes, quicktime, bonjour, apple support etc folders from system but still no change. I have no idea what to do next?

I would appreciate help with my problem. I'd like to use iTunes but it doesn't work.
Description of the problem: I was happily using iTunes for more than a year. I received a notice that a new version was available and I upgraded. When the installation was complete I received the following message:
"The installation was interrupted before iTunes could be completely installed."
iTunes is not listed in the Programs menu and there are no files at c:\program files\itunes (itunes folder is not there).
After subsequent downloads and installs, I get the same error. When I do the iTunes standard install, QuickTime is
available and works well. I went back to the previous version, but it continued to give me the same error. I found very old versions of iTunes on the web and they too had the same problem.
During the install the iTunes icon briefly appears on my desktop and then disappears. The message box indicating that the installation was interrupted occurs right after that.
I've tried to describe the problem in quite a bit of detail below to help avoid suggested fixes that have been tried and failed.
1. I have followed the steps in the KB article. Please see the details of that work below.

2. I have Administrator access. I have verified that I'm part of both the Adminstrators and SERVICE groups under Impersonate a client after authentication. This process is found in the following doc:

3. Windows is fully updated through the Windows Update utility. See Windows version info below.
4. I can install any other application. I use this computer for work and I can install and uninstall any other application
I try. No other known errors or problems. I've installed other applications that use Microsoft Installer and InstallShield installers without problems.
5. I tried the Quicktime standalone install and I received the notice that "The installation was interrupted..." Quicktime is now not found on the machine and there is no Quicktime files in the Program Files. During the middle of the installation, I received the following error. Error during QuickTime Standalone (7.1.0.210) install:
Error 1905.Module c:\program files\QuickTime\qtuiPanelControl.dll failed to unregister. HRESULT -2147220472 Contact your support personnel.
When I attempt to install iTunes from the standard install, Quicktime installs properly and works. It only fails during the standalone install.
6. No strange characters in the folder. There is no itunes folder so it contains no folder. The download exe is on my desktop.
7. Temp Folder emptied and machine restarted (many times)
8. Uninstall older versions - They are not listed as installed so there is nothing to uninstall. The Windows Clean Up utility does not list them so I can't use that tool to remove them. It appears that iTunes is cleaning itself up when the installation fails so there are no files. There is no iTunes folder at c:\program files\.
9. iPodService alert is not there so I don't need to delete it.
10. Redownload software - It has been downloaded many times. Each time I'm careful to permanently delete the previous install exe so it is redownloaded.
11. AntiVirus software has been disabled. I'm using McAfee VS Enterprise 8.0.0. I have also checked the AV logs to see if it has blocked an install or other event around that time - there is nothing in the AV logs to show any blocked or prevented activity. No activity at all because the software is disabled.
12. Registry - A search of "itunes" in the Registry Editor finds a lot of references. Too many to list, but most are in keys that apply to file types.
13. I have downloaded and attempted to install the Windows Installer 3.0 package from the following URL:

I'm told by a box during the install that the version I have installed is newer than the one on the website and there is no need to install it.
14. The version of iTunes that I'm trying to install right now is 6.0.4.2. I've had this problem for at least three months so I've been trying many versions before its release.
15. Other than the mentioned AV program, I don't have a third-party firewall, anti-spyware or monitoring program installed.

IBM T42 Windows XP ProIt is a miracle - After about 9 months without itunes, the new release installed on my machine today and appears to be working.
7.0.0.70 is the verion I just installed.
Another note to add to this now resolved issue. I bought an AirPort Express and I was not able to install the Admin software on the CD. I received the same error as I received with iTunes and Quicktime. This leads me to believe that this problem is in the registry or some other installer issue that is specific to Apple installations. I will have to go home and try to re-install that software. Maybe the new iTunes version cleared up the problem. -
Everytime I try to install the new itunes it come up with the following message: ' The installer encountered errors before itunes could be configured, Errors occured during installation, your system has not been modified. Please run installer again or click exit' I've tried to install it multiple times now and get the same message everytime. I've also tried re installing itunes 10, but when I go to open it it comes up with the message 'The files itunes libray.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes'. Please help.

ITunes 7.3 installer "encountered errors before iTunes could be configured"
I was able to originally install itunes 7.3.1.3 (upgraded from 7.2) and use it with my iphone (activated/synced for 2 weeks with no problems). I had a problem due to a disk full which corruped Outlook.
I cleared substantial disk space, reinstalled Outlook 2003. This seemed to have corrupted the iTunes sync function, so I uninstalled iTunes (using Add/Remove Programs control panel), and have since been trying to reinstall. I am continually getting the "iTunes installer Completed - The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured" error message.
I have read many messages and suggestions in these discussions, and already tried the following:
Completely uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime (iTunes no longer shows up in the Add/Remove programs or using the Windows install cleanup utility) follwing all the steps listed in "Removing iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698.
Quicktime (version 7.2 Pro) is currently installed. I can cleanly install/remove Quicktime alone with no errors, but not using the combined quicktime/iTunes installer.
I have tried redownloading the itunes installer several times, and even used the Apple Software update download only option and then manually running the itunes.msi file, but still get the same error.
I have tried manually removing all instances of iTunes/iPod/activesync/iphone that I can find in the registry and all the iTunes/iPod folders as the above knowlege base article instructs.
There must still be some other remnant of the old install, because if I try to install iTtunes 7.2, I get an error message that a later version is already installed, but I have not been able to find anything else.
I have even enabled the verbose logging, the error seems to occur in this section of the log:

Any suggestions on what else I can try would be appreciated. One of the main reasons I need sync my ipnone to my work windows machine is to keep my Outlook contacts and calendar. I have no problems with iTunes on my macs.
I am running XP SP2, and have local administrator rights on my Dell 610 notebook.I had to find this solution from another site, so thanks to all the people who viewed this thread & knew how to fix this but didn't bother.
If anyone is weary enough to come to this forum to solve this problem, here is one solution that worked for me & it may work for you if you encounter the error:

1. Use a trustworthy registry cleaner to clean your registry such as Ccleaner or Advanced System Care. This step may not be necessary though.
2. Go to "C:\Users\MyUsername\AppData(Hidden)\Local\Temp" & delete everything in it.
3. If step 2 still doesn't allow you to install Safari, then try:
4. Open Start type "CMD" in the search button, then in the cmd prompt "Regedt32"
5. In the reg editor open:
"Computer" / "HKEYCURRENTUSER" / "Software" / "Apple Computer, Inc." & try deleting the entries for any Apple programs that may be causing any conflicts.
Be aware that any programs that you delete registry entries for may not function correctly afterwards or need to be reinstalled, but this more drastic measure should hopefully allow the installation of Safari browser.
Hope this helps any further visitors to this forum looking to solve this problem it worked for me, good luck.
