The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)

As a lot of people had last night the Apple servers were very busy with iPads and iPhones upgrading to iOS5... So I waited until this morning to upgrade.
iPhone 4 no issues at all and now using iOS5
iPad (version 1) backed up but not is coming up with the following error:
The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)
Typically error 1 isn't on the list and I can only find a handful of similar comments with no luck in fixing this.
The error appears when trying to restore the firmware and I have tried rebooting my mbp and iPad multiple times. I have even resorted to installing iTunes on my Windows 7 PC where I also get the same error.
Anyone had any luck in getting past this?

I am having this same problem. I haven't plugged my ipad into my computer in 6 months or so but some of the apps (like ABC shows) are now asking for the the iOS5 so I figured I needed to go ahead and get everything updated. I have an ipad1 16G, with wifi and Verizon 3G and am using itunes on a pc.  The cellular was turned off when I plugged it in, but the wifi was turned on. It is now stuck in an endless loop where it tells me that itunes has detected an ipad that needs system restore, but when i try to restore, it eventually comes back with an error that says "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)."
I plugged in and updated my iPhone 4 and it updated no problem.
I see that all these notes about this problem are back from October and November of last year. I'm wondering if anyone has had it recently or if a solution has been identified?
It sounds like if I keep trying the restore over and over again like 100 times, it might eventually work?  I don't think it's fair for me to have to buy a new device since it was apple's update software that broke it.

Are you using a valid Apple charger that came with the iPad?
Attempting to use a computer USB port, an incompatible charger, or attempting to charge via a wall socket that only receives power from a wall switch — can all lead to a low, or depleted battery condition. Has this iPad been wet, or dropped?
Verify all of the above, and correct. If the iPad still cannot hold a charge, consider taking to an Apple Store, or authorized service provider to evaluate it.

  • HT201210 The iPad could not be restored - An unknown error occures (-1)

Attempting to upate to iOS6 - update failed - messsage received was to restore the iPad - this process went as far as "restoring iPad firmware where it stopped and resulted in the message - "The iPad could not be restored - An unknown error occures (-1)" Went through all the recommended trouble shooting steops but the problem repeats each time.

Well, I did not think much about Hardware Error (1) becuase it had never happened to me.  Well, over the weekend, I decided to upgrade my iPad 2 32gb Wifi-CDMA to iOS 7.0.6.  I first attempted this OTA, not just once, but several times.  The device would download the software, began the process, reboot and began to apply the update.  It would reach about 60 percent and fail.  After the failure, the iPad would recover and reload the current 7.0.4 iOS.  It would then inform me I had an update.  Each time, I would try to apply the update OTA.  Each time, it would fail.  So, I tried to  complete the update via iTunes.  Well, each time, the process would get to 60 percent and fail.  iTunes would produce an error 3014 or error 1.  Looking through the logs, the problem would fail loading the firmware, and more specifcally, isolated to the modem.  I eventually tried so many times, I bricked my iPad.  I had it in recorvery mode and could not get out of it.  I read through all of the forums and the stories about driving to Apple stores, visiting the Genius Bars, calling Apple Support etc.  They all resulted in the samething, a hardware error of some kind.  Since I have taken hundreds of these iPads apart and repaired them, I figured that this one would get a new set of batteries and a logic board.  But before I decided I would do that, I tried to update and restore using several different cables, tried a desktop computer, two windows laptops, and a macbook pro and a macbook air, of course all with the same result.  So, knowing that iPads are built case down and that all of the connectors are either vertical or horizontal and that most of the horizontal connections are ribbons, I decided to try reseating all of the vertical connectors.  Know, before you read on, I would like to add a disclaimer to not try this at home or even try it at all, but I will tell you, it worked.
I took the iPad and dropped it on floor 5 times.  I left the iPad in it's case and droped it on a very tight nap throw rug on top of a hardwood floor.  I dropped it from an elevation of about 3 to 4 feet.  I was hoping that the shock would compress all of the vertical connectors and give everything else a bump too.
Nothing broke, especially not the display or digitizer.  Once I picked up the iPad, I connected it directly to a computer, went to iTunes and clicked on the upgrade and restore option.  The iPad loaded 7.0.6 without any issue.  The iPad is running great and I have not had a problem out of it at all.
I do not recommend you do this to your iPad, but reseating all of the vertical connectors worked for me and I recovered an iPad that would have otherwise been bricked until it was disassembled and repaired.

  • HT201413 THE IPAD COULD NOT BE RESTORED AN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURRED

hello please help me about error -1

so, yeah. seeing a lot of peep's data getting hosed from this update. including myself.
this is a failed update regardless of how many new and "world's first" features there are. i wish i had kept the last version.
i can deal with the loss of "corrupt data," able to channel my anger better than my 10 yr-old son. he had games on there that he spent so much time leveling and achieving goals -- all wiped and dashed. he even spent allowance money (with my supervision) on buying "gold" and extra stuff that the game makers offer to improve his games.
gone. all gone with a click of an "agree" button. there is no way to get any of that back, and i'm above moderate savvy with this stuff.
i even tried to restore backup sets from a few days ago, then a months ago, and everytime, i get the same thing: data is corrupt or similar discouraging error message. it's as though this update just doesn't know what to do with personalization data and all those apps data. or it tried to and completely fncks it all up. every game, every app, every infromation that mattered, gone.
what the fnck happen, apple? did you not have enough time to beta? did you think siri and newsstand were so fncking cool that you had to push this out the door, and deliver a destructive update?
what's your next plan to safeguard your loyal users' data? because that back-up ideas you have -- icloud or icouldcareless or iwhateverthehellyouwanttocallit -- is a fail.
what does your term of use actually say in there (i never read it): "if your data is wiped by our negligence, tough ***** because you don't read this stuff anyway."

  • "the iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (2)"

Yesterday I connected my iPhone 4 to my Windows 7 laptop, and went through to install the latest security update for iPhone through iTunes. When it was installing the software update, the phone froaze, and then this happened:"the iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (2)"
Now, I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Bonjour and iTunes, to no avail. I have done the iPhone reboot method, and the phone will be identified as "iPhone" but not recognised as mine. iTunes states this phone is in recovery mode and I have tried numerous times to restore it.
Windows doesn't detect the phone while this is happening. It will not restore and the error is still popping up. I have followed as many threads to rectify this but nothing seems to be working.
I can resore it on my iMac but the reset date for the iPhone on this computer is six months old.
    Any suggestions?

When you say you uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, did you follow the directions in this Apple support document exactly? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
That will make a difference on Windows computers. After that, try and reconnect and restore.
