The iPad needs a (virtual) password keyboard

Strong passwords use letters, numbers, and special characters. Using three different virtual keyboards to type one word is a pain. Making five keyboard changes is an even bigger pain. I am sometimes tempted to create a password that is easier to type - a weaker password. That would be wrong!
A better solution than a weaker password would be a special password keyboard - a keyboard with letters, numbers, and special characters. It could occupy the whole screen, and you are only using it to type one word, and it only displays one letter at a time. It should not be difficult to implement. Most software programs are password aware; programs know when you are entering a password.

This can be annoying, but here is a tip. You can drag your finger, from the '.?123' button to any symbol or number, and then the keyboard will automatically ping back to the letters.

Try to reboot it. Hold down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple, about 20 seconds or so. It should reboot and work for you.

This is an older photo but the sleep and home buttons are still in the same place on all iPads. The home button is the round button at the bottom of the iPad and the sleep button is also called the on/off button and it is at the top right corner of the iPad.

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi. I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel. I have a yeti microphone that when I plug in it says its using too much power. A little samsung go mic I have plugs in find and works but isnt quite what im looking for. My midi keyboard is not reading...its probably 15yrs old (didnt expect it to work). I have ordered a usb powered keyboard but im now nervous it may not work if it requires too much power. Has anyone had any success with a particular model of keybaord? I saw a youtube video of the CME Xkey in which it was plugged into an ipad that uses the lightning jack, but was unsure if it was the air or a different model.
Any help is appreciated on this...I love my ipad air and hoping to make it my fully functional music recording device.

Yes what I ended up doing is buying a powered usb hub. They are about 10 dollars or so on amazon.com. There are tons to choose from. I use a yeti micrphone now with no issues and a midi keyboard. You will need the lightning usb adapter too. You plug the lightning adapter into the ipad and the hub into the adapter then plug all your accessories into the powered hub. So it works well you just gotta buy an extra piece of equipment.

I can't explain what happened but if it is asking for a password, even if you did not set one, the only way to unlock it is to restore it using iTunes.
You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.

Recovery Mode Instructions
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPad. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPad should power on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert that iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore iPad.

Why does the iPad need to be connected to a host computer to access the app store?

Is this normal operation?
I remember when I first purchased it that I needed to be connected to a host computer to even just turn it on. At that time I was advised to redo the sign-in and create a password operation and was then able to run the iPad independantly of a host computer.
Is there a way to download apps directly to the iPad without a host connection?

Well, then this thing has gotten into a mode that will not allow the app store connection unless it is connected to a host machine.
It will prompt me for the password, accept it, and then go into an endless loop of saying "Not logged in. Would you like to log in?"
If I enter an incorrect password (as a test) it will tell me "password is incorrect" - so that's not it.
Again, this reminds me of the mode this was in when I first got it and needed to be teathered to simply turn it on.
I'm only using the iTunes backup and restore method. I never learned how to simply clone the iPads HDD volume for absolute foolproof backup so I can not say that I'm able to clone my original HDD image back 100% identical to what it was when this was last working normally.
PS. Yes, the iPad is powered on. Yes, I have wi-fi access. Yes, I have power to my home. Yes, I'm sure. Yes, I've done this before and it used to work.

There are quite a few threads requesting this facility, so I thought I would choose this recently active (at the time of writing) post to reply to, in the hope some thinking appleite with influence stumbles upon it.
I totally get Apples philosophy of not polluting their interface design concepts with the introduction of a clunky so-last-year cursor; I actually agree. What I can't understand so much is that there are a number of apps that could benefit from mouse support. The one I need is RDP. This class of apps allow us to connect to servers running other operating systems using the IPad; why not authorise CERTAIN APPS to access the Bluetooth mouse stack, and let us have joy. It doesn't affect the iPad experience in the slightest, at least not to it's detriment.
The new retina screen is such that I actually prefer the experience of using my iPad to connect to the server than my laptop!, but given I develop software, there is no way my stubby finger can compete the clinical accuracy of a mouse when using intricate interfaces such as MSDE. With just that one addition, I would practically move into the post pc era you tout so much, at least in my interfacing With the post pc pc,s :).

You can make voice over IP calls with it, just as you can with just about any internet connected device. But no cell phone company is going to let you use a cell phone plan on a data-only device like an iPad.

The wall charger which comes with the ipad is a 10 watt charger, it's current is 2A, voltage is 5v. 2x5=10 w.

If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again. Also, read this.

You can only use a gift card in the country's store for which it was purchased.
Go to the App Store. Tap the featured tab. Swipe down to the bottom of the screen and tap on the Apple ID. Tap View Apple ID in the popup window. Enter your password. Go to country/region to change the store.
