Wonderful.
Gave in and updated to itunes 11 (11.01) and now every time I try to sync my iPhone it comes up with this error.
I have looked everywhere and have done the following:
- Reset the phone by holding the home button and the top button until the apple appears.
- quit and restarted itunes.
- quit and restarted the computer (I cannot do this constantly).
Items:
- iPhone 4 (iOS 6.0.1) -NOT jailbroken and with over 16gb FREE (32gb phone)
- Mac OS X 10.6.8
- itunes 11.0.1

Found the issue.
I have moved my iphoto off my hard drive to an external hard drive.
I unclicked the sync of the photos to my phone and it synced.
I then attempted to use iphoto to take my pictures from my iphone and it came up with an error.
Restarted the external hard drive and all is back to normal.

I've also seen the following reported cause/workaround:
After several Google searches I found the iPad syncing problem to be caused by iPhoto 9.4 not handling the & correctly in names. It's not recognizing them as & which is causing problems with XML. You can manually change them or wait for Apple to issue a fix to iPhoto 9.4. I started to do the manual fix & I just have too many to change.
(Manual renaming isn't going to be an easy/good workaround for a bunch of folks, though.)

I have a similar problem. After having a lot of drama with backups freezing and not completing I had to click on the 'x' to procede with any sync's. Now that 3.0.1 came out I decided to update when the popup came up saying would you like to update.
I went ahead, it downloaded the update then it couldn't install it and came up with errors. then my iPhone displayed the USB cable and the iTunes logo on the screen, now it won't do anything and iTunes won't recognise it.
I've tried to reset it, and reset my computer but nothing works. I am not uninstalling iTunes and re-installing it to see if that works. I now have lost everything on my iPhone I presume.
I am furious.

I upgraded my iphone 5 to iOS 8 and now i get an itunes error message when I try to sync "this iphone cannot be synced. Unknown error. (-50). my icloud drive was stuck in an upgrade cycle, but i've stopped that and still get the error message.

I restarted itunes and tried again (based on a similar question/solution from 2012).
I don't get the error message anymore, but it's really sort of odd that after step one of sync, it looks as if sync stopped, and then all of a sudden you see step 4 of sync.
Also before the upgrade I had 7+ gigs of space free and after the upgrade I have 10 gigs free. seems like something is amiss, but it's not like I have anyway of determining that.

Upgraded my iPhone 3G to 3.0. All went smoothly and everything seems to be working fine. Only issue was that my music had disappeared. i have the same problem:
I have an iphone 4s and I have been trying for months to update my phone from iOS 6.1.3 to the new one.
I recently got a new computer (my old harddrive crashed and will not work at all) and I just now copied all my music and photos to the computer.
Now I have been trying to update to the iOS 7.1 both on iTunes and on the iPhone but neither one work. I keeps saying "unknown error" .
I am wondering if I restore it to factory settings and then update it will the install work?
also since i have backed up to the iCloud and my computer..will i be able to recover my music, contacts, notes and photos???
