Hi, I have the following message when opening iPhoto:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it. iPhoto can try to repair the permissions.
I select repair, enter my password and I get the following:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.
This happened a few weeks ago and I have been fumbelling around trying to fix it. I have no backup servers or shared access. My iPhone and iPad 'used to' pump pictures via iCloud but this has stopped.
I am adminstrator with open & edit rights.
I'm using a MacBook Air rinning OX 10.9 (Software OS X 10.9 (13A603)

Please bear with me as I am very new to this subject.
1: Using a MacBook Air OSX 10.7.5 and it is WiFi connected to a Time Capsule.
2: Overnight I have done a complete back-up. Checked the data files and all correct.
3: I can open the files on the TC except for the iPhoto Library as I want to check visually that they are there. All 2,388.
4: The iPhone Library on the TC will not allow me to look in.
5: the iPhoto Library on the MBA allows me access and I can view etc all the 2,388.
Q1: So why can I not look into the TC's iPhone Library? Or how do I open that library so I can look in?
Q2: how can I export data back from the TC to the MBA if ever I needed to do that?

Trying to upload some photos to an e-mail an I get a message that says "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." To where do I navigate to unlock this so I can have access to my photo library?
Couple of things to try:
Restart your mac and try launch iPhoto again.
If that fails:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a file called ‘iPhoto’Lock.data or similar. Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If not: Where is your iPhoto Library stored? If it's on an External Disk, what format is that? -
Everytime I click on my Iphoto icon this is what pops up

Just downloaded OSX10.10 - Yosemite. iPhoto said it needed to be updated, which I did. Upon trying to boot up iPhoto, I received the following message: "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." iPhoto will not even open
I'm a bit of a noob but this worked - I right-clicked iPhoto and chose the top option "iPhoto Library". I didn't note the message that appeared, but it was something like
telling me I needed to upgrade iPhoto Library for it to work with my new version of iPhoto
cautioned me that it could take a while, and
once I upgraded it couldn't revert back to an earlier version.
So - I asked it to upgrade, it did, and once it finished iPhoto opened and now works!
I suppose why we could wonder why it wasn't included or mentioned in the original iPhoto upgrade, but this was probably more character-forming... -

Fix #1
Try to launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.

I had to force quit from iphoto...
then I tried to reopen iphoto and it gave me a Caution message.

I had Snow Leopard, and up-graded to Mavericks, and did the various up-grades in iPhoto to become compatible with
Maverick. Today, when I tried to open iPhoto I got this message: "iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do
not have permission to make chages to it". Now what? I can't access my iPhoto Library.First open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:'
Look for the file named iPhotoLock.data and move it to the Trash in the Dock. Launch iPhoto and see if that helped.
If not Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I don't know what has happened but I now can't open iphoto. I get a caution when I try which says the iphoto library is locked! It was working perfectly fine this afternoon until I tried to upload some photos from my camera and my computer started to run very slow and wasn't recognising my camera. I tried to quit iphoto and then when I came back in to it, this was the message I received. As far as I am aware I didn't alter any settings or put on any locks. Please help!!
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

A few weeks ago, I was using iPhoto fine when it suddenly quit working. I quit iPhoto and relaunched. It would no longer work.. was giving me the "used by another source" message. Well... lots of crap later (my husband did most of it, I'm not exactly sure what).. we have a new library where we are importing our files from the old library. I still cannot get it to open from my computer, though. As of today, I cannot open iphoto from the external hard drive (our main library). I also have a library on my macbook pro that I AM able to open, but I must click on that library from Finder (unless it is the last library that has been opened if that makes sense). I cannot use iPhoto with the option key held down in order to choose which library to run. I cannot option + command to attempt to run the repair library stuff either. It gives the same locked message.
I have deleted and reinstalled iPhoto.
I am running Mavericks and have iPhoto version 9.5.1
We have been using our external hard drive for at least 3 years now. It's defnitely formatted correctly.

Have you checked, if you have two versions if iPhoto on your Mac? This looks like the default iPhoto version on your mac were an older iPhoto version. Search with Spotlight, if you have more than one iPhoto version.
Has iPhoto ever worked with MacOS X 10.9.1 correctly? Or did this start right after the upgrade to Mavericks?
Your library is on a network volume. Have you tried, if it will work, if you connect the drive directly to your mac? It may be a network problem.

It is resolved by re-booting the computer. This is the latest version of iPhoto on a nearly new iMac. iPhoto library is in a Shared folder for multiple users to access. The permissions are fine and this never occurs after a fresh boot.
my iPhoto, after a clean re-install from Lion to everytjing else, has decided to go on strike. For some reason, which I haven't figured out yet, my library keeps duplicating all the pics everytime I do a manual backup. I'm unable to locate anything in the menu items to helpme locate and eliminate duplicates.
Yesterday, I think, my system received an auto update which I totally missed somehow until I went to shut my computer down (late 2006 iMac,OS X 10.7.1, with about a year old 1 TB HD and 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM). All seems well. HOWEVER, when I shut my Mac down, I noticed the "Please Restart Your Computer" message. I was not using iPhoto nor was the program on. When I did open the program, I got the following:

If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

After importing the latest version of itune, I now get this message: "The I-tunes library file is locked, on a locked disk , or you do not have permission to write for this file. How do I resolve this?
check if you have read & write permissions for your music folder. in the finder, right-click on it and get info. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings if necessary. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and apply to enclosed items like so
the important part is to apply to enclosed items !

In Windows 8 I received the error iTunes Library .iti file is locked on a disk or you do not have permission for this file. I can open itunes in the compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.
I've tried changing permissions and sharing - nothing seems to work. mat be a Windows 8 issue???You also need to make sure you have both read and write permission for the file, or for the whole iTunes folder for that matter. That's also done in Get Info for the file or folder concerned.

My daughter added more storage to her cloud while i was at work. When I came home and tried to get onto Itunes I got the message,'library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file. I tried uninstalling Itunes on my computer and reinstalled. After I tried to get in and the same message came up. I can get onto Itunes on different computers except one. Any Ideas?

"The ipod cannot be synched. You do not have privileges to make changes"
This is the 2nd ipod nano to have this problem. SUddenly itunes won't recognise the ipod and generates the above error. It also displays "The disk "xxx iPod was not repairable by this computer"
In the first case we were able to restore the iPod as per the instructions. In this case even restore won't work. It will not show up in Finder either, despite following the instructions to make sure it is...
Since the music on the ipod is fine, it seems silly for Apple to suggest that it must be reformatted etc.
Any sensible suggestions? Is there a good alternative to iPod ?
