The iPod "my ipod name" cannot be updated. The required file is in use.

Installed iTunes 7 on my mac. Everything went fine. Updated my ipod everything went fine. Ever since then I've been getting a dialogue pop up window stating "The iPod "my ipod name" cannot be updated. The required file is in use."
This pop up happens at completely random intervals, sometimes every minute sometimes every 10 min.
Its extremely annoying as it bounces the icon in the dock until I give iTunes focus, click ok, and then I can navigate songs etc. I listen to my music thru my iPod while its connected to my computer, so this bug just about has me reverting back to v6.
I've repaired permissions, and disabled anything I could think of that may be using it, ie synergy etc, with no success.

I have a 4th Gen 30gb IPOD and updated Itunes 7 sucessfully but could not update/install IPOD 1.2 upgrade.
Eventually after clicking the message boxes with the above info we seem to be getting, I selected the update button that appears on the front page of ITUNES and it installed/updated. I have been attempting for a couple of days and it just worked!!!!
After it completed, I received the same dialog box and then disconnected the IPOD from my laptop.
Seems to be OK now but there is def something going on.
I thought it may be a shareware issue with mp3's being downloaded into Itunes library form another application.

a few nights ago while i was updating songs to my ipod video, this thing appeared on the screen in a quick flash and i wasnt able to read what it said. then my computer blinked and resetted, causing my ipod to unplug without ejecting properly. so i pulled out the plug from the butt of the ipod only to find out that when i opened it, all my songs were gone. a good 3000 i think. i think i also pressed menu and play at the same time after that.

this is what keeps appearing on my i-tunes everytime i try to transfer songs to my ipod vid. the weird thing is that when i drag and drop songs from i-tunes to the ipod icon, it says its updating. but when its all done, not a single song appears on my ipod. and it also said something like "cannot be restored" and "ipod service error" on the ipod updater. i've tried on both computer and laptop and am experiencing the same problem. as of now, my ipod is working but it's just all empty. could anyone help? im so frustrated coz this is the second ipod i've purchased since the last one that broke down. thanks.

k i tried that but i couldnt find cupertino usa on my ipod. i did: date and time - set time zone - then a list of places come out with (DST) beside each of em. i chose bangkok (dst). tried to plug it again on i-tunes and the same darn thing appears. that dreaded -48 error. ill check out the rest of those links you guys posted anyway. thanks again for tryin to help.

  • IPod "cannot be updated. The required file is in use."

Since updating to iTunes 7 the program keeps saying that "The iPod "iPod name" cannot be updated. The required file is in use." When I click on “OK” it does in fact update. I tried to restore the iPod but couldn’t do it from within iTunes but I could exit iTunes and run the most recent update/restore on it from the desktop.
Also, I can not eject the Nano from within iTunes “iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application.” But I can exit iTunes and eject it from the desktop. I don’t have this problem with an older 40 gig iPod.
I called Apple and they promised to send a work around but it never came.

I just started getting this message today - the only new thing I have done differently since I last synced is to start rating my songs on the iPod.
Just a hunch but did everyone else start getting this error after their first try at rating songs on the iPod?
Other than that does anyone know how to report this kind of thing to Apple? as they need to fix it soon.
The only answer I have seen after 2 hours of searching is to go back to iTunes v6.05 - see Chad Armstrong's tip here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3116292&#3116292 - but I can't be bothered to go through all that just yet.

  • "ipod cannot be updated becuase the required file is in use"

I upgraded to itunes 7 this weekend and so did my husband. I am running the latest versions of all mac software with my fifth gen ipod and he is running the same with the ipod mini. We both get teh same error message:
"ipod cannot be updated becuase the required file is in use"
I have tried the following with and without guidance from tech support:
    Reboot
    repair permissions
"restore" on the ipod using itunes 7
    reinstalling itunes 7
trying to reinstall itunes 6 instead
removing login in items from automatically starting
    disabling firewall/antivirus
I stumped tech support yesterday. Anyone else having a similar problem?

I'm another one who is having this problem. Though it doesnt seem to effect the downloads or the files, it pops up every so often. Cant figure out what file its referring to or what cant be updated. Def has to do with the latest version of iTunes.

So you were able to find that setting via Sophos -> Preferences?
It has to be some other process/application on your system that is trying to access the iPod then.

  • I'm getting error "copying files failed. the required file is in use". How do I find the file?

I've found this question is elswhere but no answers.  I'm trying to consolidate my library to an external hard drive since I'm pretty sure my current drive is about to fail.  The entire process has taken me days due to one error or another.  This is my most recent error and so far there is no way around it since it does not show me what file is in use.
    Help?

I used "Carbon Copy Cloner" to copy my library from one external disk to another.
The "library" consists of a bunch of files and folders (see links at end).  You don't need CCC to copy it, just drag the whole iTunes folder in your Home > Music from one drive to the other.
I pointed my iTunes library to the new location under iTunes preferences.
No, don't do it with preferences.  Once you have moved the folder as above, start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the library.itl file on the new drive.  This is assuming you have been using iTunes's default settings and haven't been managing your media yourself.
I used iTunes to "Consolidate Library" to verify that all files had been moved.
Okay, in doing that you have  moved just your media to the new drive but left all your other library files on the old drive.
iTunes succesfully copied/re-attached a lot of files before giving me the error that the disk could not be read or written to.
    Try it with my method.
I began to troubleshoot the hard drive by checking the cables and scanning for errors.
    This disk checked out fine.
I identified the failure and subsequent error was due to corrupted files.
I watched the consolidation process and was able to see which file it was trying to copy before it errored out.
I deleted the corrupted file and restarted the process (I repeated this numerous times).
When the process seemed to be just about over, I got the error "Copying files failed. The required file is in use."
I'm sure this is likely another corrupted file, however, it happens so fast that I have no way to identify what file is causing the problem.  I tried making sure no other processes were running and no other windows or media players were open.  I also tried to look for an error log but was unsuccessful.
    Any ideas?
Disk Utility will scan for a corrupt directory but I don't think it works on the file level if it is a single file that was corrupted.  I know I have seen Carbon Copy Cloner pick up on single file error when I had one sitting on a bad sector of a drive several years ago.  If you can identify the corrupt file this way then you will have to use a backup copy since it is unlikely it can be rescued.
If you have Diskwarrior it has a file check utility.
You have, of course, restarted your computer before doing all this, and keep other computer activity to a minimum (don't play music while copying the files and don't use other applications that coupld potential be trying to get access to your files)?

  • The Ipod "name" cannot be updated. The required folder cannot be found.

Back ground Information: I’m having multiple problem and are finding a few temporary fixes online. For example, my Ipods were not being recognized in Itunes. I referenced this () for a fix but only was able to get a temporary fix. With this said, I would like to describe more problems. I just purchased an 80gig ipod video and a 2 gig nano. Currently I have 2.8 gig of music in my library.
Case 1. On the initial set up, itunes recommended to create a play list because all 2.8 gigs of music exceeded my nano’s storage space. Once the play list was created, I have not been able to updated this play list, or change it out for a different one. I get this message when I try to change the synch characteristics. (The ipod “littleballs” cannot be updated. The required folder cannot be found. )
I tried to restore the nano, but it seems to disconnect itself from itunes. A dialog box would appear “restoring little balls”, but the nano would not appear in the side menu and the top of itunes status box would be empty.
I tried to disable the auto sync function, so that my nano doesn’t disconnect itself, but I get the same message when doing so. It seems when I try to make changes to my nano this message pops up. hummmm
Can someone please tell me what required folder is missing? And how do I located it to fix this issue?
Case 2. My 80gig Ipod seems to synch just find. However, when I attempted to add pictures to it by synch it to a photo folder located on my c drive the same message pops up.à (The ipod “bigdaddyballs” cannot be updated. The required folder cannot be found.) Again, the same message.
Someone please help me before I jump out of my window. I just purchased these products and my life have consisted of continuous problem solving. I’m starting to think I made a big $700 mistake. Thanks….. HELP!!!!!!!

  • Nano 2nd gen: The iPod ipod name cannot be updated.

    Hi,
I'm unable to get my son's notebook to work with iTunes and his Shuffle. I've been through all the troubleshooting ideas I can find here or elsewhere. The Shuffle works fine on two other computers.
My son has a Dell Inspiron B130. If the Shuffle is plugged in, it will show up in Windows Explorer. When iTunes 7.02 is started, the Shuffle goes from <iPod Name> (E:) to Removable Disk (E:) to removed from Windows Explorer in about 4 seconds.
Shutting down iTunes, unplugging and replugging the USB cord returns the Shuffle to Windows Explorer. I can write files to the Shuffle using Windows Explorer.
It worked for him the first day he had the Nano, the problems started on the second day. I've been trying to solve the problem for 2 days now.
The USB controller is an Intel 8280/FB/FBM on a Dell Inspiron B130.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

i started getting this problem recently, too. it seemed that my ipod 'fell asleep' while updating/syncing and i would get that message (sometimes right away, sometimes when it was almost done, sometimes in the middle...no real pattern). 5 R's didn't work, nor did re-installing itunes. however, i found that when my 'pod was fully charged, i had no problems updating/syncing. so i would recommend resetting your pod, then make sure the 'pod is fully charged when you go to update/sync...might be a good idea to have a wall charger, rather than just the usb (i use a wall charger to top it up before attaching it to the computer. i don't really know what the problem is, but having it fully charged seems to have helped.

  • ITunes 7 - iPod cannot be updated.  The requied file is in use.

I updated to iTunes 7, and now when I play songs off of my 2nd generation FW iPod for Mac, I keep getting this message popping up:
The iPod "Chad Armstrong's iPod" cannot be updated. The required file is in use.
iTunes 6 never did this. After seeing these problems, I'm not sure if I want to update my other computers to iTunes 7.
Earlier in the year an iPod update messed up my iPod and my computer couldn't recognize my iPod, and I didn't want to try a factory reset, since that would have erased my music.
I ended up using DiskWarrior to rebuild my iPod, and it fixed the problem I had and iTunes could recognize my iPod again! I don't know if that matters or not, but that is the history of my iPod.
I have iPod software version 1.5.
But is there a way to stop iTunes 7 from trying to 'update' my iPod? This seems to happen generally at the beginning of a song playing that the error pops up.

For the time being, I just reverted back to iTunes 6.0.5, and things are working great again, even with the QuickTime 7.1.3 update.
I went to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605formac.html and downloaded iTunes 6. I had to go into the installer package and just install the iTunes package, and I also removed a few files, such as the old Library in my Music folder, the iTunes preference file, and the iTunes library receipt. I found some further details on moving back to iTunes 6 here:
    http://www.macboards.com/showthread.php?s=32018410e26cb14b23be53a85839199c&threa did=7082&goto=nextnewest
Perhaps when iTunes 7.0.1 comes out, it might be worth a look to see if my iPod problems have been fixed, but I'm probably not going to rush to it.

  • IPod cannot be updated/restored/ejected--files in use by another app

Since I downloaded iTunes7, I cannot update, restore, or eject my iPod from iTunes. I get the error "<iPod name> cannot be updated(restored, ejected) because it contains files in use by another application." I'm still able to sync music and tv shows with the old iPod software, but not movies. I eject it using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in my system tray, or from My Computer. I've tried disabling security programs and peripherals, and even sifting through the processes in Task Manager. I had no trouble ejecting prior to iTunes 7/7.0.1.
And yes, I've done the R's I'm able to do (Restore is not an option due to the nature of the error).

    Hi again, Corey!
In regard to "recovery mode" message, you'll most likely just need to restore your iPod. For more details, read here -> Restoring your iPod
If this message persists after restoring your iPod, try assigning your iPod a different drive letter; see these steps below:
Log off of any other users on your computer.
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this article:

    I hope this helps you!

  • "Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists..."

I recently bought a 1GB iPod Nano from a dude on craigslist and I updated it once, but when I try to update it now a message comes up that reads:
"Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
Also, when I updated it yesterday, it said that the iPod didn't have room for all of the songs on my iTunes...but I only have like 75 regular-length songs on there and the 1GB is supposed to hold 240. Anyone know what's up with that?
After it informed me of this last thing, it made me a playlist of a "selection" of songs from the iTunes and updated it with those.
I deleted that playlist today...may that be related to my first question?
All of this doesn't make sense. Can anyone shed a little light on the subject?
    Thanks

I had this problem with my 4GB iPod nano and I tried everything that you said to try. I did accidentally delete the iPod Selection playlist and I tried to make a new smart playlist. When I did this I got an error message that said "The smart playlist contains one or more conditions which are empty of conflict with one another. This will result in never matching any item. Are you sure you want to save this playlist?" I tried to upload an old library onto my iTunes and it was successful, however, my iPod would still not sync. Do you know what i can do to fix this?
    thank you.
