The Irony! UPS error just powers off connected devices!

I was gobsmacked yesterday (lots of US members will be googleing that one)!
A rack mounted Dell UPS had an overload error and just tripped out everything that was running off it. No putting them on bypass and sending an alert / triggering a graceful shut down, just cut the power.
I'm told that the cause of the problem was someone plugging their laptop into it which caused the overload (- seriously!). I didn't buy or specify this unit but my already slim faith in those that did is now non-existant!

  • Why wont my mac book turn on completly it just shows the start screen and under the appl theres a bar that keeps loading and when its done it just powers off  why is this happening??????

Why won't my macbook air turn on completly just at the start up page and under the apple logo there's a bar that just loads and when its done loading the Mac just powers off this just happens over and over I'm afraid if I do any thing my pictures will be lost on the computer ???

    Hi jasonfromforthworth,
Thanks for the question.  If you have updated to Yosemite, then the Apple Logo with the status bar is the expected behavior for when the computer starts up.  However, the powering off is not supposed to be happening ... so here are some steps to take if your MacBook Air won't turn on.
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
    Starting up in Safe Mode
Follow these steps to start up into Safe Mode.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup, but not before the startup sound.
Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
After the Apple logo appears, it may take longer than usual to reach the login screen. This is because your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1367
This article discusses what to do if your Mac won't turn on. To differentiate this from a display issue, be sure that when you press the power button:
You don't hear a startup chime.
You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
There is no video on your built-in or external display
If your computer has power but doesn't display any video, it may have one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
You may hear a startup chime.
You may hear fan or drive noise.
You may see a light from the Sleep LED (if your Mac has one).
Pressing the Caps Lock key on the keyboard causes it to light.
If any of these display-related conditions occur, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead. Otherwise, continue with this article.
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
    Reset the SMC.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • T61p just powers off itself

        Hi All!
I ve been wondering a lot of time about this issue, but it has become irritating.
I have 2 problems that may be related to the same solution.
    1) When i am extending my desktop using an LCD display 9 out of 10 times the laptop without ANY sign just powers of itself suddenly. The period of time when this happens varies. NO BSOD nothing at all
    2) The only game that i use in my PC is FS2004. What happens there is the following. Very often i get "Unexpected error occured with the graphics card" and says that it was restarted. When this happens 99% after a while either happens again or just powers off itself like case #1.
    I have tried many things.
-Display drivers, either official lenovo, MS,forceware...Currently i have 169.09 forceware.
-Also ia am using nHancer for getting better graphics in FS. I ahve noticed though that when i am using higher AA setting like 8x or 12x the problem occurs more often.
-I have updated the BIOS to the most recent from Lenovo site.
I have 3GB of ram but i havent opened it to see in what combination i have the RAM
I want to mention also that when i am using single display for my desktop apps this problel occurs but very rare.
    Any ideas?

My Z61t (under XP) started the intermittant sudden power off a couple months ago.... with power plugged in (also under battery power, but battery power's only used for 1/2 hr - hr at a time).  I bought the laptop new from Lenovo about 3 yeas ago, and it's been the primary workhorse for home-computing and constant wireless internet use.... no game.
The fan runs intermittantly (I assume as it's needed) with plenty of air coming out, so it's not a defective fan (air flow is fine), and fan doesn't run for long or extended periods of time as I would suspect if it were unable to keep the temperature below the threshhold where fan is susposed to activate.
I suspect it's an overheating problem with either the hard-drive or Graphics card.  Symptoms are:
Occurs after extended use sitting flat on glass over stainless steel surface or on granite counter-top with lid open and connected to internet with one or more (IE) browser screens opened.
Occurs after extended browser or Excel sessions while sitting on my lap, propped on my right knee to keep left side (hot side of laptop) open to air circulation.  However, my left hand props up the left side so that it does restrict some air flow, though not as much as when the laptop sits on a flat surface.
DOES NOT occur when front edge of laptop is propped up ~1 inch on the outer lip of the coffee table (the table surface with glass/stainless steel surface).  This puts the laptop at an angle with the table surface so that there's more room for air flow at the rear (where all the heat is generated).
The reason I suspect it's an overheating problem is because of 1) occurance only after extened use time, and 2) because this problem only started after nearly 3 years of use... same usage and frequency over that time period as its used now.
The latter reason leads me to suspect some dust accumulation? or some other reduction in heat dissipation capability internally has occurred over time so that the fan's air flow, while probably still near or at the same level as it was originally is not able to carry the excess heat away.  Excess heat means less internal heat dissipation capability through several possible mechanisms which I have left to investigate as I haven't popped open the back-side yet.  It's also possible that the debris which normally accumulates on the keyboard, then drops down between the keys has accumulated to a degree over 3 years and is now  sufficient to reduce cooling from the top surface as well.
I don't think it's an overheating hard-drive though... i.e. no more heat generated by it than it has ever done.  The reason I think this is because the problem doesn't occur when the hard-drive is under extremely heavy workloads (consant seeking for reading from and writing to it) for long durations which creates more power dissipation and hence heat generated by the drive.
I have a few more things yet to do to get a better diagnosis for cause(s).   I want to check whether the sudden power down occurs with the laptop sitting (on flat surface) but without any browser or other graphics activity going on ... just the desktop display.  I also want to check whether it occurs if I blank the screen but not go into sleep mode.... so I have to change some power saving settings to keep the thing from going into sleep or hybernate modes (just need to get around to doing this... I'm lazy as long as the sudden power down isn't occurring too frequently.
Speaking of frequency of occurance --- the sudden power downs occur about 1x or 2x a day during periods of extended use for 2-3 hrs up to 10 hrs or so.
I'll update if / when I find the problem source or better symptom analysis to identify the probable cause(s).  For now, I used the laptop with the front end propped up ~ 1 inch on the lip around the edge of my coffee-table.... so it doesn't suddenly powe off.

Hold the power button and it should show a red battery icon with a lightning bolt symbol. That symbol indicates charging.

With that behavior you need to take the iPhone to an Apple store genius bar for an out-of-warranty replacement.  In the US that is $269 for the iPhone 5.

If you have Apple care and the problem occured without misuse on your part ... it can be replaced without charge.

my on/off button does not appear to be working on my iphone 3.....is there any way around this....anyway around this?...the phone also periodically just switches off.

Likely a hardware issue... no way around that except to get it repaired or don't use it (the button).
Try restoring to solve the switching off problem.

  • Problems when the GPIB-ENET/100 is powered off.

Is there a way, other than Ping, to prevent the long timeout periods when a GPIB-ENET/100 is in or enters a bad state such as powered off?
    Attachments:
    GPIB_Power_Problem.doc ‏23 KB

    Hi,
I did some tests and searched through the documentation, but I couldn't find any NI-488.2 function that would explicitly verify if the IP address is valid.
An EDVR means that an operating system error occured. Some function within the driver failed and the error code returned by the function is store in ibcnt.
You could use this error to as a signal that the ENET is not there or it is off. Any EDVR means some fatal error occur, so you can assume you need to restablish communication. It doesn't matter if the ENET is off or the network is failing, in any case the EDVR will indicate a fatal condition.
You can then call a function that handles this situation by calling ibonl(ud,0) to close the handle (which i think will also return an EDVR error)
and then try to restablish communication using the ibdev function.
The reason the timeout value doesn't affect the time it takes for the function to return is that the timeout is used to abort GPIB operations, not function calls. The timeout value is used by the ENET firmware to determine when to abort an I/O operation on the GPIB bus. The driver doesn't use this value to timeout the network communication.
Finally, you could use the windows socket API in your code to determine if the IP address is valid. You could probably find some simple ping code that you could include in your application.
    Hope this helps.

  • SE10E starts, i see the LENOVO log then it powers off + Rootkit issue

    Hi and happy holidays,
My  wife's notebook got infected with Rootkit.gen.
I am now using my desktop PC to write this.
AVAST antivirus detected the Rootkit on my LENOVO SE10e notebook running Windows XP and advised to send the infected files to the ''chest"(Qurantine). We did but it kept reappering.
Lot of devices had an exclamation point in the yellow triangle in Device Manager (Power supply, Internet access, the mouse, USB ports, SM BIOS service, Intel chipset, ..+other stuff). Basically the ROOTKIT infected all the essentiel devices.
I was told to uninstall the one marked , then reinstalled. it worked for some, the exclamation point disapeared.
I was then asked to reboot for changes to take effect and since then, impossible to reboot. The system starts, I see the Lenovo logo, then it goes OFF after 1 or 2 seconds. F1, F8. F11  have not effect .
I have tried to unplug , remove the battery, wait, replug. It gave me 4 seconds but still impossible to do anything.
    I am really  desperate.
I feel so uselessThanks , thanks, thanks for any help you could provide.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi and welcome..
If the F11 to recover not work ..I see no chance ...to get things back to normal .... ..
If to much the necessary system parts infected ... The best is to reinstall the whole system...

  • Apple TV won't load up. the light flashes and the logo appears on the TV then it just goes off and starts again. I've tried restoring via USB on 5 different computers and I keep getting error message 9? Can anyone please help?

I have a black Apple TV that has recently stopped working. It loads the Apple Logo on screen then goes off and starts again. It's as if it is stuck in a loop. I've tried a re-boot and this has failed. I have tried a restore using a USB cable on 5 different computers, including a Mac Book Pro and it downloads the update file but when it tries to restore I get the error code 9 showing on screen. I just can't get it to do anything.
    Can anyone please help?

    Thanks for that information!
I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!

    Dear all
In my network I deployed Single-VLAN One-Armed Mode In this mode, the real server’s default gateway is the upstream router. To ensure the return
flow traverses back through the load balancer, the IP address of the client isrewritten to that of the load balancer.

    Hi,
The error comes when accessing the website through LB. The error is thrown by the server. Do  we know what does that error indicate and will be thrown by server under what circumstances?
Can you just try with one server in the serverfarm and check if it works fine?
Does it load initial page at all or throws error right away.
What do you see in show conn output? Which VIP is in question here?
    Regards,
    Kanwal

  • While playing a game or on Facebook, sometimes the game or program just goes off.  Then I have to start over.  It seems to be doing it more often.  Does anyone else have this problem and can you tell me how to fix it?

What makes the I-pad kick off while playing games or on Facebook?

    Addition:
Stupid thing is my computer works fine only internet connected stuff causes TOTAL freezes: nothing works. <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL> doesnt react. <ESC> neighter. I can only get my computer to react by "killing" it completely with power shut off ("pull the plug") and starting up from scratch.
My partners computer is working fine. He also has updated to V10.0.2 And can play the game or do anything else. It happens on my laptop with Windows vista.
Now Im typing this on an other computer. So the computer details of this one are NOT RELEVANT. Please ignore.
Because of TOTAL freeze I get NO troubleshooting information.
The whole screen is a still. Sorry.
So, now Im pretty sure its FF V10.0.2 cause we've ruled out pretty much everything else and before I go through the whole installation process... This is my LAST hope.
    ANYBODY??? PLEASE HELP ME???

  • Macbook Pro just powers off

Why would my MBP just suddenly power off?  Wasn't running really hot, there wasn't excessive hard drive spin gong on, wasn't burning a disc or anything.
    Any ideas why?

MBP crashed and I got a 'crashed because of a problem' report that I sent to Apple.
Here it is.  If anyone can read this and tell me what it means, I'd be appreciative.
