The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved

Ok, so without making any modifications (hardware or software) whatsoever- I come in from work, plop down to my computer, click on iTunes, and the music library has disappeared- I get the following error message:
The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved.
The disk could not be read from or written to.
So, in iTunes there is no songs and no playlists and no podcasts...
...the music is on my hard drive, it's just not in iTunes, the iTunes Library file has gone missing, but I'm not sure how...
I have like 5,000 songs so I keep them on an external drive to save room on my internal drive. I thought maybe the warning means that the disk is write protected, so I right clicked on the drive (and iTunes folder), said "Get Info," and I have read and write access.
I tried changing my iTunes Library location to a different hard drive and folder, and nothing works, what in the world do I do?

I'm having the exact same message, except in my case, nothing changed. I leave all 3,000 songs on my hard drive and suddenly nothing will copy. I still have the same songs as before, but nothing can be added from the store or from my cds. Have you worked out the problem? Can you share your strategy?
Thanks.

  • "The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved" - Error 1450

I get this error when I try to update my library:
"The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450)."
I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTune for about 7 times but it keeps coming back.
    What can I do?

I wish I could say either the Reg changes or disabling McAfee anti-virus worked for me, but I am still stuck.
I am running 6 on a Win2K Server. My account is admin and I have confirmed it is not a permissions issue or a lock file issue.
I receive the -1450 error in the following conditions:
    1. iTunes attempts to save library
    2. iTunes attempts to download a purchase (actually, it appears to occur after the file is downloaded, but it does not save the file to disk, although it thinks it downloaded the file)
    3. iTunes attempts to rip a CD. This is a random occurrence whereby the rip stops at some random place mid-song. I may have it happen immediately, then work for a few songs, then happen again. I have been able to rip 2-3 CDs before seeing the error, whereas other times it seems to occur with the first song and I retry a few dozen times before it works again. I have used 2 different CD drives.
    4. iTunes attempts to sync with the iPod. In this case, I randomly receive the error that I need to reset my iPod to factory defaults. However, after a day of waiting, it works again. I actually tried to reset the iPod to factory defaults when I was first presented with this problem--it caused a write error and crashed the iPod to the point where it could not even be recovered by the Apple staff at the Apple store; they gave me a new replacement unit.
I have to think this is a programming issue on the iTunes side, specific to Win2K (and possibly NT). Has anyone had this problem on an XP box?
My next step is to move all my files and software over to my XP box and see if I receive the same errors. Should that fail, I'll use a non-iTunes product until a software update is released.
Anyone from Apple checking into the -1450 error issues?

  • The Itunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred

This is driving me crazy.. I've uninstalled Itunes, used msciuu2 to clean up the installer(s), deleted any ITUNES directory located on my computer. cleaned out all itunes entries in my registry .... start reloading my podcasts and I get the same error all over again..
I do not have Itunes as my default player and it uses its own directory d:\My Documents\Itunes vs d:\My Documents\My Music folder (as I do NOT want WMP or Itunes to conflict with the music libraries.

  • ITunes Music Library file cannot be saved.  An unknown error occurred (-54)

I just went through the problem of not being able to access my iTunes library and think I got that fixed. It is on an external drive because it is about 55gb's of HD space. I have it linked via an alias on my internal drive of my powerbook.
Now I get this message: The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-54).
First question: If Apple has tagged it with a -54 then it wouldn't be unknown would it?
Second question: I can still play music through iTunes, this dialogue just keeps coming up, with the option to not warn me again. Is it anything to worry about?
    Thanks for any help.

Please let me know what you decided to do with this problem. I am suddenly getting the same "error" message. Well, except that my "unknown error" is tagged as (-50). I'm searching through the discussions now.
I had some trouble with iTunes earlier in the week (after wiping out my iPod and other not-so-helpful "tips" on here) I wound up reinstalling Quicktime. But it worked fine until just now.
Now keep in mind, I subscribe to tons of podcasts and add new music both from iTunes Music Store and other sources all the time.

  • Itunes music library file cannot be saved (error -48) Help! please!

every time i either use iTunes, or look at iTunes, play any file in iTunes (even though it does play the file) it comes up with this message-
'The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved, an unknown error has occured (-48)'
i would really appreciate some help, any ideas would br great

this is kind of funny. First I read from paper something that Apple is going to break every hacked or some other way touched Iphones to keep their business rolling. Now they did something with the iTunes which eventually broke up our playlist. I fixed this with by deleting my Smart playlists. What I noticed while deleting those was kind of... wierd..
I have all my classic rock etc in the play list named Speed metal. While I was listening WASP (ripped from CD, not bought from itunes - is that what makes you mad, Apple? ) from the normal library I got the error message. So. I though that there must be some broken link between smart list and this song and I deleted the smartlist (Speedmetal).
Wierd part is that I was still listening this song from iTunes Library but when I deleted the smart list it stopped playing the music. That is when I realized that the smart list system is some how affected with this newest update.
After deleting I didn't had to rebuild the library or anything so I still got my Date added and how many times played tags available and also my own genres! Thank god. Because I have all my CD's (~400) on iTunes with own Genres and settings...
Now... Can I update my Tiger to Leopard when it comes out or will it just spit my Samsung DVD drive out of the mac because I didn't get it from Apple Store?

  • The iTunes Music Library file is locked...

My friend has a problem whenever she tries to open iTunes she gets this message: The iTunes Music Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file. Any suggestions?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Intel Core Duo

She has transferred the music from an older eMac. Her iTunes has been working fine for a month but when she transferred a song from her old computer and tried to open it she got an error and since then whenever she tries to open iTunes it won't work.

  • ITunes Error-Library file cannot be saved

Ever since I updated iTunes has been doing all kinds of weird things. Tonight I'm listening to tunes and I keep getting an error box that says "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-54)." It doesn't interupt the music but it is annoying and I have so much music, I don't know if I'm losing songs or not. Can someone tell me what to look for? This update has been the worst yet. Most of the time, iTunes has my iPhone and my iPad showing in the Library column when neither one is attached.

  • Error message: "The iTunes Music Library file is locked" Help?

I made the stupid mistake of disconnecting my iPod nano when it said "Don't Disconnect". Now when I try to open iTunes, it says that the Music Library file is locked. How am I supposed to unlock it?

I had a similar problem when iTunes froze up on me. It seems like the solution to the problem changes every time. Anyways, another way to solve it, is instead of changing the permissions on the library files, select "get info" on the application icon itself, and then modify the permissions. Even though it may say that you have "read and write" permission, just reselecting it should do the job.
    Hope this helps,
    Stephen

  • How can i change the iTunes music library file location

Hi, I have installed the latest version of iTunes6.0.4, by default my music library files are storing in "c:\documents and ettings\administrator\myDocuments\myMusic\iTunes\iTunes Music". It's nothing but my H:\ drive and it will be shared by a group of pepole. I would like to move this location to "C:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music".
I tried by changing the location in the below specified way.
iTunes preferences --> Advanced --> iTunes Music Folder Location --> Change.
But still it's iTunes is storing the music libraries in"c:\documentsandettings\administrator\myDocuments\myMusic\iTunes\iTunes Music".
Could you please let me know how can change this location permanantly from ""c:\documents and ettings\administrator\myDocuments\myMusic\iTunes\iTunes Music" to "C:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music".
    Thanks,
    Chetan.

The music library files are hard-wired to the My Documents folder. The only way to move the files is to move the My Documents folder, which affects the entire system.

  • TS1389 What do you do if you keep getting the error message that the i Tunes library file cannot be saved, and that you don't have permission, etc...?

I noticed this message quite a few times over the last few months. Now the album that I just purchased won't save in i Tunes. I am really looking for a way to fix this so I can enjoy my music, especially since I have already been charged for it. I e-mailed apple tech support about the fact that the album has disappeared, but although I have waited the forecasted 48 hours, I have yet to receive an answer. It's rather frustrating.

  • Library File Cannot Be Saved

I'm getting a warning: "The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50). [checkbox] Do not warn me again."
I would like to know what this means, and what to do about it.
    We're using iTunes 6 on a G3 b&w, with a second HD (100+GB).

It sounds like your iTunes Library file has become corrupted.
I would recommend rebuilding your library, which is an easy and relatively quick process:
    * Launch iTunes and go to the Library (first item in the Source menu)
    * From the File menu, select Export Library
    * Save as a .xml file on your Desktop.
    * Quit iTunes.
    * Go to the ~/Music/iTunes folder and remove but DO NOT DELETE the file iTunes Library.
    * Relaunch iTunes.
    * Your Source List will be empty except for the preset iTunes playlists - but don't worry.
    * From the File Menu, select Import
    * Choose the .xml file you exported earlier, and click OK
Your playlists will now be back, with all of their metadata in pristine condition. You can trash the iTunes Library file that you earlier moved, or you can rename it and save it in your Documents folder as a backup.
Good luck and let us know if this works out and solves your problem.

  • Playlists empty, no iTunes Music Library file

Is it possible to recover songs from a playlist?
I was reading over some posts on the subject, which mention moving the iTunes Music Library file. I see the iTunes Library file, but not the iTunes Music library file.
    Thanks for any help!

I don't know exactly what you mean by recover songs from a playlist. What are you trying to do?
The two library file terms are the same, just differ with iTunes versions.

  • ITunes Music Library File Corrupt

    Hey,
Yesterday I was putting some podcasts on my ipod shuffle, when itunes froze. I force quit it, and when i booted it up again, it said that the iTunes Music Library File was locked or that I don't have permissions for it. I replaced it with my previous library, except now I have a library that's like four months old. Is there any way to import the songs/podcasts from my music folder into my music library? Or perhaps to repair the damaged Music Library File?
PS I don't have any .AACs.

Do you still have a copy of the problematic library file? (or of the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file that was in the (home)/Music/iTunes at the time? If so, use the File->Import function to import either of these files.
(First make a backup copy of your current "iTune Library" file just in case.)
If the import won't work because it says the file is locaked, go in the finder and select hte file, do control-I to bring up the get info box and make sure the file's preferences are set to read and write. If that doesn't help use the Disk Utility application in your Utilities folder to "repair permissions" on your hard drive.
Finally, if these methods don't work, then you can manually add the missing music (but this won't bring back any ratings, playcounts, etc associated with the tracks in your old library). Go File->Add to Library and select your music folder. It will go through the files and only add the ones not already in your library.
By the way, AAC files wouldn't affect this problem one way or the other.
