The “iTunes Won’t Work &/or Won’t Install” First Aid Kit

Offered as a general compilation of Installation and Run solutions for iTunes. Read and understand this post completely before deciding on the strategy that applies to your specific situation.
You may first want to try a “Repair Install” (read below how to ‘prepare’ your computer prior to starting):
- Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panels -> Add or Remove Programs
- Select iTunes, Select Change/Remove button, Select "Repair", Click OK.
If that does not work, then select some or all of the below and adapt it to your situation:
If you run Norton Internet Security:

b Uninstalling iTunes will not erase your music files,
or the two meta-data files iTunes uses to store your music info files (iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Music Library.xml). However, it is
i always
a prudent idea to have backups of your music files on some external source (CD, DVD or External Hard Drive).
b COMPUTER PREPARATION for REPAIRING, INSTALLING or UNINSTALLING
Prior to Repairing, Installing or Uninstalling ANY software package, close ALL running programs. In addition, you
b should
i temporarily
disable any TSR (Terminate & Stay Resident) programs like firewalls, virus scanners, spy sweepers and the like. You will need to disable them both before uninstalling ANY software and/or before installing ANY software. Most of these TSR programs have System Tray Icons (usually located in the lower-right corner of your XP screen), that allow for an ‘exit’ or ‘quit’ or ‘shutdown’. Usually a single right-click on the icon will bring up a selection menu.
These TSR programs can impede installation of some software or create conflicts later on during operation (or lack of operation) Some anecdotal reports suggest that iTunes 4.8 & 4.9 are affected. Based on the amount of success by folks here who have tried the Clean Install, this seems to be a good solution for a variety of iTunes operational ‘glitches’
Please note that your TSR programs will all restart upon reboot. You will not be left unprotected. This also means that you need to remember to disable them when reinstalling iTunes after rebooting.
You should only install or uninstall one software program at a time – then reboot the computer. Remember to again close all running applications and TSR programs before installing (or uninstalling) the next program.

b Also,
for iTunes to work in the XP environment, you will need to turn off the 'Fast User Switching' even if no one else is using the computer (best to check this, as well).
==>Start/Control Panel/User Accounts/Change the way users log on and off/ ==> remove the check mark from FUS.

hi Buegie!
I endorse my dear Da Gopha's comments. here are a few other things that i've come across lately.
(1) I've noticed something peculiar in our favorite "itunes installation errors" reference about the two entries for
b 1628 ...
one of them leads to the InstallShield 1628 advice and the other leads to the InstallShield
b 1608
advice. I'm not sure precisely what to make of this.
i've recently started linking people directly to the InstallShield 1628 advice:
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110740
(2) here's a link (thank you CoJeff!) to InstallShield's advice on the 1603 (useful in those rare cases of a "standalone" 1603):
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111019
(3) here's a link to the InstallShield FAQ, including their Tips and Pointers on "best installation practices" (useful as an addendum to toonz's advice when the little beasts start going all recalcitrant on us, and useful when dealing with the "undocumented" errors):

love, b
ps: i'm just heading off to link a poor gentleman with a "recalcitrant 1406" to the alternate advice on the beast. thank you!

Hello skdog I possibly think your ipod touch is black because it has not charged. If your dock is broken it might just mean the dock will be broken and so might be the USB port. You should see an Apple shop nearby and hand it over and see what they can do. I hope this information works!

  • Will the New iTunes 11 for Windows work on Windows 98???

Will the New iTunes 11 for Windows work on Windows 98???
    A. True.
    B. False.

My opinion is no. Apple has no plans updating version 11 to meet the needs of Windows 98 being that #1 - Windows is pushing forward with their Windows 8 operating system launching in a week and iTunes 11 would have needed to be re-written from scratch to accomodate the Windows 7 and Windows 8 systems. It is a known issue that iTunes is bloated and most Windows users will use other media players to manage their music rather than iTunes. #2, Windows 98 is so old that even Windows does not recommend anyone using anything past XP as you are exposing your PC to viruses or anything that no longer can be patched. I highly recommend upgrading to atleast to Windows 7 and this is of course if your PC matches the bare minimum of hardware to use iTunes 10.7 and 11. You are actually doing more harm than good by using an outdated OS.

    Hello JohnnyChin95,
You absolutely can just reinstall OS X Mavericks without having to erase and install. The steps to do that are almost the same as the only thing you do differently is that you do not go to Disk Utility to erase the drive. Just go to the Reinstall OS X option and pick your Hard Drive and follow the on screen instructions to get it going. Check out the article below for the step by step process.

  • Trying to install the new itunes update and it keeps saying error could not install itunes. Currently I am running windows 7. Any advise to fix this problem.

Trying to install the new itunes update and it keeps saying error could not install itunes. Currently I am running windows 7. Any advise to fix this problem. This is doing this when installing itunes/quicktime, safari 5, mobileme control panel, and the software update itself. The itunes version is 10.3.1

That suggests that the installer is getting damaged during the download.
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • I have Windows 7, 64 bit, and I am using iTunes 11.0.1.12. I have been all through the threads and internet..how do I delete songs from my iTunes and hard drive at the same time? I have my music in the correct iTunes folder. Nothing works.

    Windows 7 64 bit
    iTunes 11.0.1.12
I have my music in the correct iTunes folder
In iTunes, I select songs, click "delete", then "move to recycle bin", finally, empty my recycle bin that shows the file is there
File is still on my hard drive.
I just want to be able to delete files out of my library and off of my hard drive at the same time. I have tried everything I have read, and there really seems to be no real answer. Somebody please help!

i do, but like i said it fell once and since then it hasn't been able to connect to my laptop. it acts like nothing's connected. i believe if i call the company the HDD is from they'll be able to transfer it to a new one but who knows how much they'd charge. looks like i have no choice now.
If it were truly a backup, then the media would play on the laptop as it would be on the laptop.
Sounds like you actually do not have a backup, instead you chose to keep your media on an external drive.
Regardless of where the media is stored, it's always a good idea to have a backup for instances like this.

  • Itunes won't fully install or unistall, "REQUIRED FILES MISSING" error

I tried to download the latest itunes and now it won't open at all. Every time I try and open itunes an error message appears "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Reinstall itunes" I have reinstalling and the set up freezes on "registering Itunes automation server" the the error message comes up again. Also when trying to uninstall itunes it freezes on "unregistering Itunes automation server"
I have no idea what to do and I can’t even remove the program from my computer
    Please help

I'm having the same issue, however the following must be noted, I successfully did the update on my Acer 5100 Laptop running Windows XP SP2. The only difference between my Acer and the Desktop (where itunes 7.5 will not install) is that the laptop is a newer techonolgy.
Afraid this has to be taken into consideration. If your sporting an older pc then you like myself are running the risk of NOT being able to support future upgrades, and APPLE, MICROSOFT know this but won't really send you a newsletter telling you to upgrade your PC
You will figure it out on your own after stressing yourself out!
Sad but true reality to face my fellow PC users.

  • New iTunes won't finish installing

I just tried to update to the new iTunes and right when it is about to finish the install this message comes up..
"The Installer could not validate the contents of the ‘iTunesX’ package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
Anyone know how to fix this issue?  I read a few things saying I should go into my HD & to Receipts and delete the iTunesX package and update again but this did not work.

Do you remeber the exact (or close to it) wording of the error message?
Try manually placing the iPod in Recovery mode and then try to restore

  • Itunes won't complete installing?

My itunes won't complete the install process? please help

I tried turning off my anti-virus to no avail. I really have no idea what are they are talking about with "Tools-Downloads" The only place you can do anything is under Help-Check for Updates, and I assumed that was the same thing.
I also tried to email Apple but they need the serial number of my Itunes. How do you find that? I didn't even know Itunes had a serial number.

  • ITunes won't open, install or uninstall

When I try running iTunes, i get the message:
iTunes could not be installed because Visual Basic Script (Basic) is not installed or has been disabled. Make sure Basic is installed, turn off script blocking in anti-virus and personal firewall software, re-register Basic, and then install ITunes.
I have installed Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 express edition and still nothing has happened. The same happens when I try to install or uninstall it so I can't acsess my music. Help!

I don't think iTunes 7.6 needs Visual Basic script, but presumably the uninstall of the old version does.
    You could try re-registering vbscript.dll:
    Start
    All Programs
    Accessories
Right click on Command Prompt and run as administrator, Enter
    In the command prompt, type the following;
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll

  • Itunes won't finish installing - Interrupted?

Everytime I install the latest itunes it stops when it's publishing product infomation then it's says it couldn't have been completed because it was interrupted and the system has not been modified! Please please someone help me!
    Nathan

Yes, run means run the install over the interenet, not good if some kind of glitch happens.
Try the Save. Put it on your PC where you can find it. When the download finished, double-click on the file to launch it.
