The Keynote/Quicktime bug which prevents podcast exports from Keynote

I too have been stymied by the bug which prevents export of .mov files out of Keynote when the presentation contains builds. I spent this weekend recording lectures which I would normally give to medical undergraduates in person but for which I will be away so have to prepare substitute podcasts. I have done this in the past very successfully. This weekend I recorded the audio for the lectures in Keynote and all worked as it should when I played them back within Keynote. The first lecture I exported successfully to a .mov file but this presentation was short and didn't contain animations. The next two lectures would not export, the computer often spent many minutes saying it was exporting but would then produce an error message saying that it could not be completed because either there was not enough memory or the file was the wrong format. I tried at different resolutions, shorter presentations etc. This was all very frustrating because last year I had successfully done the same thing with highly animated presentations.
Today I tried it on my office computer which is a recent 24" iMac with lots of memory and a powerful processor but the problem remained. It was then that I consulted the forums and found page upon page of people with a similar problem and lots of supposed fixes including reverting to earlier versions of Quicktime etc.
I am in a similar position to many other posters in that I have to produce these teaching materials by the end of this week and so cannot wait for Apple to produce updates that will fix these issues.
Some posters recommended the software Screenflow as a solution and I am posting this message to confirm this does provide a good solution. Obviously we shouldn't have to pay $99 to get round a problem that Apple has created from a system that previously worked effortlessly and seamlessly but if you are in a similar position to me then this solution will work. You simply take your Keynote presentation with audio commentary and run it whilst Screenflow is recording in the background and set Screenflow to record the computer audio. This produces a file that can then be exported into a number of different video formats optimised for different viewing platforms (e.g. iPod, iPhone, computer screen). It took 5 minutes to install the software and 5 minutes to learn how to use it. The transitions between slides and the animations within slides are all very smooth and the video and audio is perfectly synchronised.
Screenflow would also be useful in other contexts such as recording video tutorials to teach students how to use software programmes, e.g. aspects of Photoshop, so it will have uses which the Keynote/Quicktime combination couldn't deal with but I still feel aggrieved that I have had to spend $99 on software which I didn't need a few months ago.

I too wasted hours this weekend trying to export narrated KN files, which worked flawlessly last spring semester. I too am needing to get these narrated KN files published for my college students by the end of this week. Perhaps purchasing QuickTime Pro and pasting the audio file works, but that still does not solve the problem of exporting to iPod or YouTube, which continues to give a "not enough disk space" error message regardless of how small or large my presentation is (plenty of GBs on my computer too). Also, when I export to Flash, the movie works, but converting the Flash file results in error messages (saying the file is corrupt. I have tried this many times with new KN presentations).
Apple needs to fix this. I bought iWork'08 specifically for KN's exporting capabilities, otherwise I might as well have just stuck with PPT. I'd like to believe that Apple is working on the issue and that we will not be forced to purchase yet more software. In either case, any information by Apple clarifying this dilemma would be very helpful to and appreciated by all of us. Apple, will this be fixed in the future or should we buy new software?

  • Can't export from keynote 09 to quicktime

When I try to export from keynote 09 to quicktime 10 I get an error code there is not enough disk space or error 34.  I have taken off some graphic intensive files and have 30 GB of space left, but that does not seem to help.  Waht can I do?

Until you receive a specific answer from an expert, I would suggest finding somewhere to put unnecessary (or less important) larger files.
Macs need 10% free space to work correctly and 15% is much safer. Any less and you could run into all sorts of unpredictable problems. I think you will find that some of the free space is being used to process your exporting request, so that is multiplying the problem.

  • Error 108 exporting from keynote to quicktime

hi to all, i know this problem is already questioned, but after reading all the posts about it and after have tried all the possible solutions i cannot export my presentation from keynote 5 to quicknote. i still got the same error 108. the first time i've tried everything worked fine with a presentation of 400 slides full of hyperlink and images with the same transistion (  i still had no idea about the bug ). so i need to do one again bigger of 656 slides with hyperlink and images and the transition.so i tried again to export it... then it started troubles. the 108 error was shown to me for the first time. after that i try many times with small groups of slides from my presentation with hyper link and without them, with transitions and without them... and the result was that sometimes i cannot export one slide neither!!!!!!!!!!!!! one slide white, without anything...
please do you have any idea about it? the other way to see my presentation on a pc means a lot of stupid work campared to a apparently simply export from keynote to quick time
    thank you in advance

  • MOV exported from Keynote - last slide disappears, audio continues playing

I have a series of three mov files that were created in & exported from Keynote. They are audio & slide shows that are to autoplay on a website. Two of the files function as expected once embedded in the website, one does not; the last slide drops out (displaying a white screen) while the audio continues for approximately 30 seconds until the mov file ends. To add confusion to the issue ALL the files play as expected using Safari (on Win & Mac). Using Firefox on Mac delivers the "broken" results. Using ANY browser on Windows yields the broken result.
Any suggestions from anyone as to what could be causing this? A link to the website I'm talking about is below. The problem file is on index2.html

    Hi,
Since I am trying to do a number of things with Keynote, I read these discussions looking for opportunities and pitfalls.
I read your message, and saw your outcome as an issue. Since I've yet to add the soundtrack to my current project, I needed to know more about the outcome before I proceeded, in order to adjust accordingly.
I took my project, and added a song as the soundtrack. I played the slideshow, and the soundtrack played along, across the slides as it should. I then began to record the slideshow, but the soundtrack came playing through the speakers and was being picked up by the microphones, so I offed the speakers, donned my headphones, and re-began the recording. The soundtrack was playing (in the headphones), and I was narrating across many slides.
I played the recorded slideshow, and all was present - soundtrack and recorded narration.
I exported to Quicktime, sending the output to a new folder so that it could easily be found, along with anything else that might be generated. Upon completion, there was only one movie file in the folder. I opened and played it in Quicktime. It was perfect - slides looked good, narration was there, and the soundtrack was playing in the background.
This outcome appears to be your objective, so I'm not sure what I did differently than you, but from this experience, it works as should be expected.
    Good luck.

  • Is there a way to control the quality of my pdf file when exporting from a .pse file?

Is there a way to control the quality of my pdf file when exporting from a .pse file?
    Hi,
I have 2 pages in all in a .PSE file.
When I try to export it as .PDF, the quality is very poor. I cannot change it to a better quality.
Please advise how I can export the file so that i can have better quality.

To expand a little on what Jongware said, normally choosing vector over bitmap will decrease the filesize. If the vector art is very complex though, this will not be true.
Yup, a logo as bitmap takes up more space than the same as a vector -- unless the vector image is bitmap heavy (think Drop Shadow, Outline Glow; these are actually bitmap effects).
Also, check your PDF version. "Older" versions do not support live transparency, the latest do. Then again, you cannot use live transparency if you suspect your viewers may be using Mac OS X, because Apple's own PDF viewer sucks big time.

  • When exporting from keynote to quicktime the video only includes the first 3 slides

I'm exporting a keynote presentation to quicktime and the resulting video only has the first 3 slides in it. What could be the issue here? All my software is up to date.

  • HELP!EXPORTING FROM KEYNOTE TO QUICKTIME AND IT CREATES TWO DIFFERENT FILES

I made a presentation in keynote, adding music from my itunes library and need to send it to a client (who owns a PC) ASAP.
When I export my keynote file to QT, it creates two separate files on my computer. One is the project and one is the "soundtrack.mov"
    1. Why does it create two separate files?
    2. How can I send the ENTIRE presentation in one?
    3. How can I send it to a PC user?
    4. Why did it tell me on my last music selection that I added to keynote (After I exported) that I would have to open it in itunes???
    Totally NEED HELP ASAP!
    Thank you

  • IPod music player crash when playing podcast, exported from GarageBand

    Hello!
Before start, I'm using this soft/tools: GarabeBand '11 (6.0.4.) on Mac OS X(10.7.2.), podcast, submited in iTunes, and iOS 5 on my iPod Touch 4. All software is up to date.
So. I have a podcast which Is playing fine everywhere, on Mac, iPod etc. But the latest episode I did yesterday, I made with GarageBand to try "Chapter Marks" feature which I did not used before. Then I export podcast to my Mac and upload to my server to make available in iTunes Store as I usualy do.
Then I downloaded latest episode of my own podcast in iTunes, transfer it to iPod, and found that this episode cannot be played on it! I mean, it transfered well, it shown in episodes list of my podcast, but when I tap to play - music player app just crashing all the times. All previous episodes works fine, so I guess the problem with latest episode is because of GarageBand.
I've tried many different export settings in GarageBand: AAC Encoder with Higher Quality (192 kbps), iTunes Plus (256 kbps) and Custom settings 320 kbps. Also I tried all options in "Quality" dropdown menu in Custom settings: High, Higher and Highest.
But result is still same - this episode, exported from GarageBand, crashing on iPod (although It can be played normaly in iTunes on my Mac).
Would be glad for any suggestion how to solve this. I feel very bad cause subscribers of my podcast downloading "broke" episode :-(
    p.s.
Here is podcast in iTunes Store - http://itunes.apple.com/ru/podcast/daniel-lesden-presents-rave/id423519688
Here is RSS feed - feed://ravepodcast.com/downloads/podcast.xml
The problem with latest episode, #017.

I examined the episode media file. In QuickTime Player 7 it shows the chapter images, which are 160x160, and plays normally.
However in QuickTime Player X it doesn't show the images, but opens to a very large black player. The info in QT7 looks like this:
You will notice that although at the bottom it says 'Normal Size 160 x 160 pixels', in the top section it refers to a JPEG at 6227 x 6227 which I suppose is an embedded image, though I can see no evidence of one (unless it's plain black): an image this size wouldn't show on an iPod and would very possibly crash it.
I can't explain how this got there - I've never used GarageBand to make a podcast - but you should have an investigation and try to locate and remove it; it's very likely the cause of the problem.

  • IWeb not recognizing podcast exported from Garage band

I've been sending my podcasts to iWeb for over a year. I used to host my site on MobileMe but switched to a WordPress site through GoDaddy last year. Regardless, I've always continued to send my podcast to the old iWeb site and pinged iTunes from there. Have had no issues doing so.
When the podcast exports, iWeb has always prompted me/asked me which "blog" page I want to use for the new podcast. (Naturally, I chose my "podcast" page as the old site had multiple pages). Now, iWeb is not prompting that option, essentially not acknowledging that there is new content being exported in.
Any ideas where the disconnect might be? I've redone the share/send podcast to iWeb process from GarageBand 5 times with no success.

Did you ever figure out the answer? I am having the same problem.

  • Exporting from Keynote to Power Point

I live in Kenya in East Africa and run photographic safaris. I use Canon digital equipment (still photography) and at the end of each safari set up a slide show of the better images taken on the safari and give it to the guests. I present my images using power point as this seems to be the most universal way to present slides.
I own a 17 inch Power Book G4 and also a 17 inch Mac Book Pro. I use Aperture on both Macs.
On my new Mac Book Pro I have problems. After editing in Aperture, I then export my versions ( in any format - Tiff, Jpeg ) to a file and then import them from that file to power point. Power point seems to remove all the punch of the images making them look very flat and hardly worth looking at. Why?
I have managed to by pass this problem on my Power book G4 by exporting images from Aperture as Tiffs, these seem to work quite well when they are imported into Power point, except the files are huge.
What this means is that I own a Mac Book Pro but don't use it as it can't do what is required. I hope I am doing something wrong or that there is an alternative method to presenting slides.
I have Keynote, which works well. Sadly most of our guests are PC users and so would like the slides in a PC format. Keynote allows you to convert to power point, but here again the picture once in power point looks flat, Why?
Is there a better method than Power point to present slides? In a presentation I like to have text, single and multiple images per slide.
I have used iDVD, but there are not enough pixels on a TV screen (when showing still images) to give you a punchy clear picture, or so I am told.
I would love any suggestions to help with this problem.

    Hi Ngiri
It's not really clear to me how you or your guests are assessing your "flat" photos - on a computer screen, via a video projector, on a TV?
Most of my photo slide shows are created using DVDStudioPro - look fantastic. Distributed as a PAL DVD "best viewed on a TV".
Lately I have tried some photo presentations using Keynote, and then exported to Powerpoint. Photos looked fine, but PP is unacceptable. I then tried exporting from PP straight to PDF. Using a PDF for a presentation was a revelation - photos look very good. The PDF is a small cross platform file. However, I still prefer DVDStudioPro, but it takes much longer to create a DVD.
Have you actually tried Keynote straight to iDVD? Or a slideshow created within iDVD? (Lots of tutorials available).
I have used iDVD, but there are not enough pixels on
a TV screen (when showing still images) to give you a
punchy clear picture, or so I am told.
???I don't understand why anyone would tell you this???
Of course, Aperture could be the problem...or your Mac Book Pro is incorrectly setup.

  • Error exporting from keynote 3 to idvd 6

Apologies for duplicating this in iDVD forum too:
I know this has been posted before - but I can't seem to find an answer to fix my problem. I am trying to export a 30 slide presentation from Keynote 3 to iDVD 6 - the presentation is using slides which should be the optimum slide size for iDVD (according to help files) it has an sudio file with it, but when I go to burn it using iDVD i get the following error message:
    Error During Track Initialization
There was an error during track initialization and iDVD
cannot continue burning this DVD 'the disc has not been
touched yet!). Please select Delete Encoded Assets'
from the Advanced-menu and try burning this project again.
I tried exporting the presentation to QT, which then worked and allowed me to burn the dvd, but the picture quality was completely rubbish.
Am at a total loss what to do next as have spent last three days trying various things with no success... idvd now keeps crashing on me as well. I have an urgent deadline I need to meet by next week

    Hi BigLou:
Be sure that you trash the idvd preferences prior to staring a new project. There may be leftover files from the trial version that are messing things up too. Look for all of those to be sure that you got rid of them.

  • Exporting from Keynote to iTunesU

I am trying to export a slideshow with voiceover narration to iTunes U. Is there an easy and direct way to get the presentation into the format recommended by iTunes U (MPEG-4 with H.264). When I use the preset export settings in Keynote, I seem to always end up with a QuickTime file that is huge and has glitches in the timing.
My workaround has been to export for Keynote to QuickTime, and then import the QT into iMovie, and reexport it as .m4v. The end result is great (clear audio, good video, and a not too bloated file size), but the process can take HOURS.
I can't believe there isn't an easy link between Keynote and iTunes U. The two apps are an obvious fit.

Im using Keynote 09 and I have tried to export through the share option in the menu bar. I have also tried to save as a powerpoint and they both give me errors that are unknown.
    Thanks for the help

  • Songs on the computer are gone. Will it export from Mini to Computer?

Long story short, my father's computer was completely restored and none of the song files or anything are there and my question is "If he connects the iPod mini to the computer will the songs on the mini export to the computer? Or will all his songs be gone forever?"
I would really appreciate any information.
    Thanks!

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

  • PPTs exported from Keynote won't open in Powerpoint 12.2.8

    When I export a Keynote 09 file as a Powerpoint and then try to open it in Powerpoint 12.2.8 I get the following error message. "There was an error accessing Symbiont:Users:Symbiodin:Desktop:02EpitheliatextA.ppt This happens with all files I export as ppts, not just one. Curiously, the files will open in Powerpoint 12.2.7? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Or better yet, have a solution for it. (-;{

I also had this problem. I found, by trial and error, that an image I had in my master slides caused the issue. When I removed it, exporting to PowerPoint worked correctly.
This image had been there for a long time, and I'm not sure what was wrong with that image. It used to export fine with older versions of Keynote. Or the latest Office update broke it. I'm not sure who is at fault, as I updated both.
Anyway, that might be something to try. Either in the master slides, or one of the slides.

  • Exporting from keynote to FCE

Exporting apresentation from Keynote with H.264 compression...very good quality...finetuning in FCP and the exproted files look like crapp...tried many eports always the same...artefacts all over the place...Help please...thx

    oops, just realize:
in topic you ask for fcE, in the post you write of fcP.. that makes a difference...
for fcE, 1024x768 is no supported resolution..- gets converted/zoomed => loss of pic quality..
for fcE, usually AIC is the internal codec for HiDef ..
for fcP all the above isn't true.... no idea, about fcP..
