The Library module: Basic workflow

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS31C90D9B-2D4C-490f-B72F-EDD9D8DF60B6.html

Thanks.  I knew there wasn't a pretty interface mechanism for it (or I couldn't find it), but thought that maybe there was some ini file that could be edited.

  • Moving files and folders in the Library module

I teach a lot of LR users and one area that's consistantly frustrating and unintuitive (even to some experienced users) are the rules for moving files and folders around in the Library module. I'm not sure I have all the right answers/suggestions/remedies but here are the basic points worth examining:
    1) Additional hard drives aren't listed unless images from it have been imported into Lightroom. It would be nice if people could add a new hard drive without importing files from it. People don't get it that you can select "Add Folder" from the Folders pop up menu. Classic example: Say someone has purchased a new hard drive for archiving purposes. It's empty and they want to drag folders of images onto it from within LR. Possible Solution: include a "Add Drive..." option from the Folder's panel + pop-up menu that would behave the same and add a root level folder.
    2) One can't drag more than one folder at a time. While I assume this is designed to prevent accidental mass movement it would be nice if one could enable the movement of multiple folders.
    3) One can't drag a folder onto the main drive bar that lists the drive's name and capacities - one has to drag onto a folder within a drive. I'd love to be able to drag a folder onto the root level of a drive by dropping onto the drive bar (this would be similar to the MacOS finder).
    4) Sometimes the root level of a drive isn't apparent. One may need to right click on a folder and select "Show Parent Folder" to show the root level folder which is named after the volume. Showing a root "folder" that has the same name as the drive is also confusing to people since there isn't actually a folder on the hard drive with that name.  I completely understand why folders are hidden by default and I'm not sure the remedy is but, again, this isn't intuitive for new users. If #3 worked as described perhaps we could have root level access without the root folder?

Perhaps I should add that I really like and appreciate a lot of the decisions that have already been implemented into the Library's Folder's tab. Moving files instead of copying them, showing only folders that contain imported images, the ability to show or hide parent folders.... Bravo!

  • Show file name in the library module

In Lightroom 2.7. there was the option in the library module to show the file name of the photograph in the area under the photograph. In Lightroom 3 I can not find this option anymore. Can anybody help me to find it ?
    Thank you

Info is not available in LR3.  You could use the info overlay.

  • Why does the library module looks so different from develop

Ok, so the library module on my lightroom 4.4 does not match my develop module. Especially in the noise reduction department. It's like I haven't even made any changes and yes I zoomed to 1: 1 to check the differences between the two and they are still there.
Also when I export it looks like the library module's version of the photograph, washed out and filled with noise.
Is this a glitch? What the heck is going on? This just started doing this to me today.

Please let me know how to adjust the master volume.  I am having the same problem with my Garageband '09 (version 5.1) and the sound fades out after about 18 seconds when creating a ringtone.  Also, when I move the yellow bar anywhere but the beginning, the music plays but no sound at all.
    Please help!
    Thank you!

  • My photos look terrible in the library module after editing in the develop module.  They look nothing alike.  How do I solve this issue?  Using Lightroom 5.

anyone have any ideas?  The only way I can get around this is export the photo back into iPhoto and try to edit out the mess.

The waves you are seeing on your monitor must be more pronounced than what I'm seeing in the posted screenshots. The Library module uses Adobe RGB AND 8-bit JPEG preview images, which can cause banding in fine gradient areas (compared to Develop view), but I'm not seeing a huge difference in your screenshots. Here's a screen shot with my non-wide gamut monitor calibration profile. If my screenshot shows less banding than what you are seeing with the original images it indicates a monitor profile issue as described by twenty-one. A hardware calibrated monitor is recommended to prevent these types of issues.
The Library image also appears lighter in the shadow area, which probably indicates more Luminance NR needs to be applied or perhaps less sharpening. Try it and see if that helps with the issue.

Dont know if this is a new occurrence or very many details but try changing "permissions".
Navigate to the following folder: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Highlight the Lightroom folder and chose File > Get Information
Under Sharing & Permission, verify that your have Read & Write Privileges. If not, click the padlock icon at the lower right, enter your password when prompted, then click the Read only entry and select Read & Write.

  • Can I Rotate Without Having To Go Back to the Library Module?

I only see rotate arrow buttons in the Library module. Is there another button in Develop so I don't have to keep going back?

Use the Photo > Rotate Left/Right menu commands (the menu items show the keyboard shortcuts as well).

  • When I attempt to apply a lens profile in the Develop module the only choices are for the Fujifilm X100/S/T even though in the Library module the EXIF data correctly shows the camera as the X-T1 and the precise lens used to take the picture. How do I get

When I attempt to apply a lens profile in the Develop module the only choices are for the Fujifilm X100/S/T even though in the Library module the EXIF data correctly shows the camera as the X-T1 and the precise lens used to take the picture. How do I get the right profile available?

First, the required profile needs to be present. LR 5.4 supports the X-T1 in terms of understanding its Raw format, but will not come with a profile for every lens which can be mounted onto that.
A profile is made for each specific lens, as mounted on a certain camera. It can also be used with pictures taken on a different (reasonably similar) camera body than the one originally used during profiling. This is subject to the sensor format: you can employ a given lens profile made for full frame, on an image from a crop sensor behind the same lens - but not vice versa.
Next, the image type needs to correspond to the image type which has been built into the profile: Raw, or non-Raw.
Lightroom offers only profiles of the right type for the image(s) concerned. There are many more provided for correcting camera Raw, than for correcting camera JPG. That is also the case with additional profiles, e.g. those accessed via the Adobe lens profile downloader utility.
Finally, in the event that there simply is no profile out there for a given lens, it is not particularly difficult (though a little tedious) for the end user to generate one, using a further Adobe utility which is downloadable as a package, including a range of checkerboard calibration targets, each of which needs to be printed at a stated physical size.

  • The library module in 4.3 version does not show all the images

The library module in the version 4.3 of Lightroom does not show all the images. They are marked with gray boxes instead of images. This is especially true of the images which I tried to import to Lightroom since I downloaded 4.3 a few weeks ago. If I want to seen an image, I have to go to the develop module to see it. What should I do?  Get this fixed now!!!!!!!!

My bet would be on a corrupt preview folder.
Your preview folder is located in the same folder as your catalog. It has the same name as your catalog with the word Previews.LRDATA at the end of the name. Rename this folder and let Lightroom rebuild the previews. Go to Library>Previews>Render Standard-sized Previews.  See if that fixes it.
If it doesn't, you may want to have a look here: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/photos-appear-black-gray-rectangles.html

  • How to organise the library best for workflows?

I need some help to set up my library propperly. I'm using Aperture for a year now and the organisation of my first major project was a bit of a mess and I lost control. I had a folder as top level, then a Project (box) containing folders and smart folders. I wanted to work with keywords only but that didn't work out.
Now I have an even more complex project and I want to go back to a workflow based structure. But it seems that the boxes, folders and albums aren't quite designed for this kind of organisation. This is what I actually want to do:
    – Top level Project name e.g. Seasons
    – Sub-projects /divisions e.g. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter (note that a photo can only be in one category)
    – Workflow sections where photos are moved according to their state of progress, e.g. Import, Editing, Review, Published (again a photo can only be/show in one location)
This is how I would have liked to do it:
    1. A folder or box as top level called Seasons
    2. Four boxes or albums as sub-divisions for the seasons
    3. Give every step of the workflow an album or folder (like sections to move through)
Now this is the obstacle I'm facing:
    1. I can't put boxes in boxes
    2. I can't put photos in folders
    3. I can't move photos from one album to another (they need to be deleted separately in the old folder)
I have read about how these elements are designed in the other threads. But I havent yet found a way how to use them the best way for my purpose. The best thing I can think of at the moment is to use folders in the top two levels and boxes for the workflow.
Is there anyone who tried to organise a project like this before?

    Hi,
of course you have to find your own way.
I just recommend  (I first did something similar to what you plan to do, so who am I, to tell that you shouldn't),
to start not with Folders as the top level organizer.
In my opinion you have to think not of files but of pictures.
So the pictures are organized in PROJECTS and are always ORIGINALS because it is different to Bridge or LR
not files that you are working with (it takes a while to think this over, I guess).
So the pictures are now organized inside these folders into ALBUMS with different "workflow states" like
the originals ( I would name them more: base-pictures or shooting or whatever)
You pick your stars from 1 to 5 (and 9 to delete) to create kind of a choice from the shoot.
Out of your choice you create an album for your EDITS and immediatly delete those pictures from the SHOOT-ALBUM ( they are still chosen and still you can make them visible via cmd/F and choose all pictures with 1 star and more- go to PICTURES-DELETE FROM ALBUM).
So now you have every picture only one time inside your PROJECT and still only one time in only one ALBUM.
Now you feel free to create some intelligent albums if you need, for checking which ones were taken to a lab for printing or send via email or whatever. For me personally these intelligent albums don't work but this depends on the workflow and your clients.
The advantage is in my case, I export PROJECTS as so called MEDIATHEK (another AP LIBRARY) to an
Ext HD, so I have all the adjustments and the order, in case AP starts to work not as I want it ( I had these
issues a few times in the past and had, what is discussed in this forum as well, thousands of pictures two, and more times without knowing what I did wrong after repairing ).
    Hope this helps
    Uwe

  • After installing lightroom 5.7 update, the library module has become painfully slow at times. I am running windows 5.7 64 bit.

I am running windows 5.7 64 bit. I have made no other changes. any help with this.
I used to be able to cull in lightroom in the survey mode but the delay is too slow.

I returned to previous 5.5 version of lightroom and it still has the same symptoms. Very slow in library and survey mode. I tried it on various catalogs with the same result. I purged the cache it did not seem to help. Are there any other ideas?
