The limitation of Virtual Memory

hi all.....
When exporting the huge data volume to excel, the process always terminated by time-out and dumps error.
I read a lots of post and SAP notes. I found the root cause of lacking of memory. I have 8GB memory on OS.The limitation of virtual memory in each process is 3GB after activating 3GB opotion in boot.ini, is that rigt?
If I want to use more than 3GB, I should upgrad to 64 bit machine, is that right?
OS : windows 2000 advanceed server on 32 bit
Physical memory : 8GB

just install additional dialog instance for your SAP system on any 64-bit platform as Eric said....

I check it using Activity Monitor and found that "Finder" wll increase the "Virtual Memory Size" and "Private Memory Size". and then after a while. the system told me my HD is full and hanging there.

    The one has nothing to do with the other. Virtual memory size and Private memory size are used by developers to analyze their software. it has nothing to do with anything related to the user.

  • How to change Virtual Memory in Windows 7 with SSD and 16GB RAM

    I have SSD Samsung 850Pro with OS Windows 7 and have installed physical RAM 16GB.
    In Adobe Help/Optimize performance/Photoshop written :
    " To change Virtual Memory in Windows 7 and Vista, quit all applications and then do the following:
    Choose Start > Control Panel, and double-click System.
    Choose Advanced System Settings in the Tasks list.
    Select the Advanced tab and click Settings in the Performance section.
    Select the Advanced tab and click Change.
    Deselect Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives.

    I have 16GB RAM
    in the Initial Size box : 16384+300=16684MB
    in the Maximum Size box:16684x3=50052MB
    but in the description of SSD written :

    Windows set to default virtual memory : 16348 MB =16GB !
    But SSD program Samsung Magician wants virtual memory between in the Initial Size Box :200MB and in the Maximum Size box: 2048MB or 4096MB. If more than 8GB suggests that SSD will work slowly.
    Perhaps the description in Adobe execution Help / Optimize / Photoshop is not correct or ?

    I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and am encountering the same problem as mentioned here:

    I am trying to use RDP desktop version to connect to a site (which uses RD Gateway). It says "Initiating Connection" and then fails with no error or any notification (there is nothing in the event viewer)
    If I try changing settings (removing sound from RDP, reducing resolution) I eventually get this message:

    Remote Desktop Connection
    [Content]
    This computer can't connect to the remote computer.
    The problem might be due to low virtual memory on your computer. Close your other programs, then try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support.
    Connection worked fine on Windows 8 - is this a known 8.1 bug? It is pretty critical for me!

    Since I cannot repro this issue, I considered that following factors may cause this issue:
    Paging file value setting is too low.
    RAM issue
    First, I suggest we try following steps to check the issue:

    I frequently get a flag warning of low virtual memory. I suppose I need more RAM. I am a novice at this. Can RAM be downloaded ? If I need to buy an item where do I get it? I live in Mazatlan Mexico.

    According to the specifications at Toshiba's website, the A45-S120 came with 256 MB of memory, so it's no wonder that you are getting virtual memory alerts.  You can increase the amount of virtual memory Windows allocates by following the steps in this article:

    If you feel like spending cash on that old machine, then upgrade it with more physical memory.  For maximum compatibility, use Kingston KTT3614/512 or KTT3614/1G modules.  Increasing the physical memory will generally make the computer more responsive.

  • Use Secure Virtual Memory - An observation

    I recently noticed that my MacBook Pro, with a fresh install of Snow Leopard, had the item "Use Secure Virtual Memory" checked in the Security Preference Pane. A little research on these forums and I learned that was a new feature of Snow Leopard and it is on by default for portable computers and off by default for desktops.
    The threads that I read in researching this touched on who needs this turned on and why as well as potential performance implications of having this turned on. The general message was that the load on the CPU would probably not be noticeable given the disparity between disk performance and CPU performance.
    I had used my freshly rebuilt MBP with this option turned on for a couple of weeks when I noticed it and turned it off. While I'll agree that from a performance / response perspective I noticed no difference between it being on or off there was another measurement that did show a noticeable difference. I always run temperature monitor, including my CPU temperature, on my MBP, it ends up being sort of an early warning when something is beginning to make the CPU work harder than normal. Since turning off the "Use Secure Virtual Memory" option I can confidently say my typical CPU temperature has dropped between 6 and 9 degrees Fahrenheit for each working set of applications / activities that I do with my computer. So while there may not be a performance gain per se, clearly the CPU is working a little less with this option off.
    Just wanted to share this for others to make an informed performance perspective decision on using this option.

    It seems like the default for Mac Laptops is ON, while the default for Mac Desktops is OFF...

  • "Use secure virtual memory" doesn't encrypt swapfile

    System: Fresh install 10.5 with full patches to 10.5.1 G4 iMac.
    No matter what I did with the "Use secure virtual memory" option in System Preferences, the -E switch did not get passed to dynamic_pager.
    Setting ENCRYPTSWAP=-YES- in /etc/hostconfig also had no effect.
    So I forced it in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist and verified that the -E switch is being passed to the dynamic_pager on startup. Guess what? The swapfile still appears to be in-the-clear.
    So I thought the contents of /var/vm/swapfile0 might be left over from a previous boot so I booted into single-user and ran +rm -P /var/vm/swapfile0+ then booted normally. Still appears to be in-the-clear:

    I've seen discussions that this also applies to Leopard Server. I haven't looked at Tiger client or server yet.

    I was looking at this myself, more so because I was having performance issues and wanted to see if secure virtual memory was worth it. I encountered the same issues you had with the "Use secure virtual memory" checkbox. It seems that it isn't working. But then I spent like 5 minutes trying to understand the explanation in help:
    Use secure virtual memory: Select “Use secure virtual memory” to erase any information from random-access memory written to the hard disk by virtual memory.
    Keyword here is "erase" not necessarily "encrypt". This is my understanding of virtual memory. Let's say you have some application that uses a password. that application gets pushed to virtual memory. You access the application so it gets placed back in RAM. When this happens, and if you have secure virtual memory enabled, it will erase the information from the virtual memory. Without secure virtual memory that information still lingers in there till reboot and the swapfile is cleared. It's not necessarily encrypted though.
    Now, why when you specify the -E option and it doesn't encrypt the swapfile I'm not sure. the man page is rather vague, but does say that -E encrypts the swapfile.

    As mentioned in my question above, it happens usually during playing games. I wondered if there were someway to clean out the virtual memory, as opposed to it "increasing" continually and overloading my memory in general. You are speaking with a computer novice for the most part, so I am unfamiliar with a lot. I do do updates and general maintenance on the computer, but is that enough for this issue?

    Physical memory is the memory that is installed on your computer as real memory. To be able to run programs that require more memory and more programs at the same time (via time sharing and task switching) it is also possible to move (swap) currently not needed code and data to disk to make room for other programs and data. The total memory available for programs is the Virtual Memory.
    You can check the Virtual Memory settings here: Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings (Advanced tab)<br />
    Windows can manage more memory then is physical available and that memory is stored in a page file on your hard drive.
    If the size of that file is not large enough and all available memory is in use then you get the Virtual Memory is low warning.
    Make sure that you have at least 1 GB or the recommended setting for the Virtual Memory.
    If you have less than 1 GB physical memory installed on your computer then if possible add more memory.

  • What the heck is going on with my Virtual Memory??!!

    I'm not really sure why but when I check activity monitor and see my VM it says i'm using anywhere from 230-270 gigs of virtual memory. This is literally fresh out of restart when it says this much and never changes. I go through and check every process I see runing and create a quick estimate of the virtual memory being used, and it's definitely not over 10 gigs if even 5; honestly I think it's listing between 1-2.
    What the heck could be causing this? Verified HD and came up clean. Should I be concerned? I'm not gonna lie this macbook isn't running the best it used to be. Watching videos, whether mp4, mkv, youtube, is pretty laggy. I'm aways sure to close all other processes to to try and maximize video performance, not that it helps much. I'm considering a fresh install and recovery via timemachine.

    I excluded the list of fonts from step 4 as I'm a graphic design major and have well over a thousand...and I didn't want you to burn up your scroll wheel or rub the tips of your fingers off with the amount of scrolling you'd have to do had I included them .

    I encountered this problem on our SQL2012 and I have tried different scenarios (see below) to no avail. I have decided to give up and check if someone here has encountered this and resolved it. 
    One thing I know, it's not a memory issue. Both servers we're using has lots of memory to spare and we monitor the memory as the replication goes through it's steps.

    Our Scenario
    We're using SQL Server 2012 SP1. All subscriptions are pull based.
    We're using direct Merge Replication (not FTP or web sync)
    We already have 10 active replications with larger databases. Only 1 has this issue.
    Database size is less than 5 GB
    Rebuilding the publisher is not an option.
    What have I tried?
    There is no memory problem --- we have lots to spare
    I have tried re-initialization of the database. Same problem.
    I tried deleting the database and reinitializing it. Same problem
    New snapshot. Same problem.
    I tried changing the subscriber server but still same issue. 
    MCP, MCSD, MCDBA (ANXA)

    Here is the result for the sp_configure on our subscriber. We're doing a pull on the server with the issue.

    1. I was editing an article, and the screen went grey every time i typed in one character. It encouraged me to start again, but the same thing kept happening, until it finally said the virtual memory was filled, and I had to go to "help" to fix the problem. So here I am Help!!! Sahra

    I have set .use_indirect_data_buffers=TRUE and *._enable_NUMA_optimization=FALSE.
    The db_block_buffers is set at 4GB.
    Shared_pool 200MB
    Large_pool 56MB
    Java pool 56MB
    PGA is currently at 400MB
    AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY is set at 720MB (which is the lowest I can set it)
    At the moment there are various jobs running on the database and no users logged on and the virtual memory is at 1.8GB.
    The problem is as soon as the users logs onto the DB the virtual memory goes over 2GB and we see the error 'ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 2416 bytes'.
    Now I have edited the boot.ini with the following parameters:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="UBS WSP - Wintel Server Platform with PAE" /fastdetect /PAE /4GT
    because the /3GB parameter switch started the server with lots of errors.
    The oracle.exe process still seems unable to go over the 2GB limit with getting 'ORA-04030' errors.
    Can someone tell me if I have missed anything? Or a reason why oracle is not using the switch?

In response to customer requests, Microsoft has expanded the availability of this support to the 32-bit version of Windows XP Professional and all 32-bit versions of Windows Server™ 2003."
    of course, we mustn't be mistaken with the AWE switch (/PAE) that is not available for standard edition.

  • How to change the optimal virtual memory

    Hi, i use a tevra m2 1.8 GHz 512 MB laptop.
    normally used for office work and not for gaming,
    antivirus bitdefender consumes lots of memory so one has to be cautious on using memory.
    so i was wondering if anybody knows how to configure the best the 'virtual memory' : min and max : about 1.5 and 2 times the RAM-size ?

    Please go to:
    System Properties - "Advanced" tab - Settings in the performance area - "Advanced" tab - "Change" button
    There you will find the Virtual memory settings.
    I would recommend setting the settings to "System managed size". In this case the OS will control the value automatically.

    Virtual Memory of tomcat(version is 6.0.35) is very high and jvm crash even though we decrease java heap size from 1024M to 500M.

    HASPJava.dll is used by verification  License and is invoked less and can't use a lot of native memory.
    Our business is communicating between java and COM component. In order to implement it, we used JavaCom to generate java class for COM component.
    Memory of COM component is little, but Native Memory is high.
    Who used JavaCom and did you meet this problem?

Is it possible to trick the system, by creating a RAM disk and allocating this as virtual memory space?

    LabVIEW the application doesn't know anything about physical versus
    virtual memory. LV asks the OS for general purpose memory and goes
    from there.
    Drivers like DAQ and IMAQ will have a combination of general user
    memory and page lo
    cked physical buffers.
    I'm not up on the details, but this is something that the OS is in
    control of, so that is where you need to look for the solution. One
    of the things to look at is the disk cache. By default, I think that
    NT takes a percentage of the RAM to use for disk cache. With that
    much RAM, this is probably unnecessary and is using too much.
    Similarly, the OS may be attempting to keep the working set size
    to a fraction of the total RAM to reserve space for other things.
    It doesn't make sense to me, but then I don't work for MS.
