The little grey exclamation marks...

OK, I realise that the reason why the grey exclamation marks next to some of the songs on my ITunes is that the song titles or album titles are too long... but it won't let me change them. The Song Info comes up in grey text & won't let me edit. So I have a bunch of good songs I can't listen to, & they are preventing me from consolidating my library, & I REALLY don't want to delete them cuz most of them were downloaded from the Music Store & I don't wanna just waste money. Advice please, people?
Thanks

"I realise that the reason why the grey exclamation marks next to some of the songs on my ITunes is that the song titles or album titles are too long"
That's not correct. The reason that you see the ! next to songs is that they have either been moved from their location, or they've been deleted, and either way, iTunes cannot find them.
If you were to double click on one, you should see a message come up to that effect. iTunes will ask if you want to locate the song. Click yes and see if it can be found.

    Grey "Exclamation Mark"?
A yellow means no Mac OS partition for a HDD.
Maybe you have a power symbol like this one
If so, your mac is having Kernel Panics.
Could be caused by a system folder corrupted, faulty HDD, Faulty RAM or FAulty Logic Board.
    What to do:
    - Backup your data (use TimeMachine if possible)
    - Erase your HDD and Make a fresh install
    - If still happens, there is a hardware issue. If works fine on a new install, it was OS, so just start migrating your data back.
    Good luck

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 and iPhone 5 import photos grey exclamation mark.

    I'm running OS X 10.6.8.
    iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2 and a current, up-to-date iPhone 5.
I was importing photos and movies from the phone into iPhoto fine until a couple weeks ago. Now, when I look back - some photos never did import at all, or others are visible as thumbnails but the full view is a grey exclamation mark.
The "original" images don't appear to be in the iPhoto "view hidden" contents, either.
I've run the option-command-launch routine and rebuilt thumbs, library, but no good. As a matter of fact, when I try to rebuild the library from backup I get a warning I need to upgrade. I'm not sure what that means? ...upgrade version of iPhoto 09 or uprade to the 2011 edition?
I'm not totally against upgrading to 2011 but that would require upgrading my OS, too. It seems a bit much to solve a glitch/corruption in iPhoto that was working a few weeks ago?
Thanks for your time in reading. I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How to find grey exclamation mark pics?

    Hi gang,
I have noticed when going back over some old pics that some have the thumbnail, but when I hit space to view the photo close up, I get a grey exclamation mark.  When using Reveal in Finder, the original pic file is present and looks fine.
There are only a few of these that I have found, and they are scattered here and there.  Is this a problem that would be fixed by rebuilding the thumbnails? Is there a program that can scan the iPhoto library and flag such photos?
    Cheers!

The exclamation mark is an indication that iPhoto has lost/broken the file path to the orignal file. Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

  • GREY EXCLAMATION MARK (GCOD) on my new computer

I have one situatuion... i just got a new desktop computer
    INTEL I3 PROCESSOR
    WIN7
    8GB RAM
    EVERYTHING UP TO DATE
And i have been experincing the Grey Exclamation Mark when i watch back to back youtubes videos for lets say anywhere
from 30mins-1hour..... it shows and i refresh it goes away and it would come back between the time zone......
i have all updates i uninstalled and re-installed adobe flashplayer 2 times so i have no idea if its a problem on adobe side or not?
any ideas? I DID READ THE GCOD ADOBE RELEASED...
ANOTHER THING IS I HAD TO PUT A CHECK IN INTERNETEXPLO. SETTING UNDER "USE SOFTWARE RENDERING INSTEAD OF GPU RENDERING" DUE
TO A WHITE SCREEN ON SOME VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE VIEWED ON FACEBOOK.
    ANY IDEAS GUYS?

This isn't expected behavior, nor is it widespread.  We test youtube pretty extensively (I usually start a couple 24-hour long videos when I take off every weekend on all my machines), and we have a bunch of people that do GPU compatibility testing with a wide variety of graphics cards and drivers.
Anyway, it could be a number of things -- but it sounds like you're running out of memory.  It could be Flash, the browser, graphics drivers, a bad plug-in/toolbar or something entirely different.
First things first, let's make absolutely sure you're running the latest player:
    1.) Go here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html
2.) Make sure it says 11.4.402.287
If not, grab the latest from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
    3.) Repeat step 1
If you have the latest, and you're still experiencing this, I'd like to see if you also see it in the latest beta, which you can grab here:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/flashplayerbeta
If that doesn't help, let's take a look and see if it's a memory leak in Flash/MSIE:
    1. Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar, and then clicking Start Task Manager.
    2. Click the Processes tab.
    3. To sort programs by memory usage, click Memory (Private Working Set).
Just keep an eye on the memory as you surf youtube.  Does it just grow continuously until you get the Out of Memory (OOM) icon (we should be consuming several gigs at that point)?
If it's happening and there are only a couple hundred megs in play, it might be that you're running out of GPU memory.  We'll throw the OOM icon in that instance as well.
If that's the case, disabling Accelerated Graphics in Internet Explorer might help.

Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • How to delete the tracks with exclamation marks?

I have just moved about 10 gigabytes of music I don't listen to off my hard disk to an external hard drive. This was to declutter my hard drive and get me down to about 50% free. Itunes now has all the moved tracks still listed with exclamation marks next to them all now. I want rid of these songs from my Itunes view. How can I get rid of these moved tracks now without manually deleting the batches. Annoying that exclamation mark field is not sortable or would be easy to mass delete.
Anyone got a neat solution out there?
    Thanks in advance.
    Lorne

Yes, but now you have lost all your regular playlists, ratings, play counts, last played dates, non-embedded artwork etc.
Hope you don't miss them. If you do it might be possible to restore an earlier version of your library file and then bring it up-to-date with the free scripts at Doug's site.
An all iTunes, no loss of data approach would have been as follows:
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Command-A to select them and Option-Delete to remove them. You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.
I normally recommend the scripts as being an easier way to do things that you may want to do again.

  • Can't get rid of the folder and exclamation mark!

    Hi all,
Hope one of you can help. I have just returned home after a month away working and went to listen to some music on my ipod but found that the charge had gone. I plugged my ipod into my laptop and left the ipod to charge for a few hours, one thing i did notice was my laptop didn't and hasn't recognised my Ipod i.e opened up Itunes when connect up to the USB port since letting my battery go flat, other noticeable things are my conputer only comes up as E drive when connected not Apple Ipod as usual however when i hit remove hardware on the toolbar of my laptop it identifies the Ipod. I have tried the 5 r's and have had no luck with any of them and i still have the folder with a exclamation mark. One thing to note is when i try to run Ipod updator it comes up with a message no dock station found but it shows my serial number of the ipod when i first connect but comes up with this message when i try to restore. I am at my wits end now i have tried diagnostics and everything looks ok no faults flagged.
Can any of you genius out there help please?
    Regards
    Woody

  • Hi people i am so frustrated, i have downloaded 449 songs and when i try to put them on my i pod it gives me only 150 and the rest have exclamation marks beside them ***

    Hi Mark
I have downloaded 449 songs and i can not seem to get them all on my i pod it will only download 150 and the rest all have exclamation marks against them, could this be from my old i pod and how can i get to them

The exclamation mark means the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. This can happen if you or some other software moves, renames or deletes the files. Select an affected file and press CTRL-I to Get Info. Look at the summary tab and the entry near the bottom that says Where: This will start file://... and gives the last known/expected location of the file. The last part of that path will be of the form <filename>.<ext> where the <filename> is typically <track no.> <track name>. Search your computer for the specific filename to see if you can find where the file has been moved to. Ideally just move it back to where iTunes wants it to be. With luck you'll find that a bunch of folders has just been moved to the wrong place and you can move them back as a job lot.

  • ITunes 8: How to remove the little grey arrows next to artist, album etc.?

    Hello
Since upgrading to iTunes 8, I can no longer find the setting to remove the arrows next to the song name, artist, album and genre. I don't like them in my library as it takes up space and creates clutter while I'm browsing though.
If you don't know what I mean, then see this: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596100360/figs/d1e733-web.jpeg labelled as "Little gray arrows"
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks

It's all over this place, but:
Close iTunes, open Terminal. Put in this command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE

  • What is this little grey box in the bar ruler of Logic Pro 9?

What is the little grey rectangular marker above and to the left of the green triangle? It moves around like an auto punch or loop marker. I think it was causing my project to export a 17 minute long mixdown when the audio files end after about four minutes so I want to get rid of it. Thanks.

You can not get rid of it!

  • I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files)

I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files

You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
If you use an external drive, a change in drive letter is a common cause and you need to change it back.
AS a way of working out what has happened, right click on a track and select the summary tab (you will have to go past an error message). The summary tab will tell you where iTunes thinks the track is located. How does that compare with where the track actually is?
The xml library file is not used by iTunes, it is created to allow other programs to access the library. You can recreate the iTl file from the xml file, but there is no point if the location of the files is wrong.
There is a simple way of getting you music back in iTunes, but it loses all playlists counts and rating. To do this drag iTunes library.itl and iTunes Library.xml to your desktop. Then open iTunes and an empty library is created. Add you iTunes Media folder to it.
If you can't work out what went wrong and how to fix it, you may have to do this.

  • Little grey icon on top of my presets, to the bottom left corner. What does it mean?

Yesterday, I went into my presets folder because I was searching for a particular brush, and I noticed a little grey overlay icon with a white line in a 45 degree angle. The little icons sit on top of the presets icons, and they are located to the bottom left hand corner. I tried to search what that means, with no luck. Just in case, I even checked everything with my antivirus, but it doesn't seem to be a virus. What is that? (I'm running Adobe CS6, in a Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit pc)

Thank you Noel! I downloaded the program. I'm not very sure how to proceed with it, since I'm not too "techy", but I'll try to find out if it is some kind of shell thing that makes my computer behave like that. I've run my antivirus again to see if it could be something virus-related, but no ... everything comes out clean. So, I'm glad it's not that, but I wish I knew what this is. I opened one of the folders that contained some presets, I actually went into some actions, in the Photoshop files, and I didn't see the icon overlays, just in case, I did a "refresh" screen thing, and the little grey overlay appeard not only on the presets, but now also on the image files (there was a .gif and a .jpeg file inside the action folder). So, well ... I might need to look into this a little further.
But thank you so much to trying to help me, I really appreciate it! The reason why I'm so worried about that little overlay, is because I noticed all this yesterday, and the night before I had problems lauching Photoshop (It was taking forever to lauch), after a few minutes when it finally launched, I got a blue screen error!!! I restarted the computer when it came back up, and then I ran a whole system scan (With Norton 360), everything was ok, but the following day (yesterday) I noticed these overlay icons, and now I fear to start Photoshop again! I think I'll have to open it, because if I don't do it I'll never know if everythin works fine or not, but I just fear that it will give me one of those blue screens again!
Well, we'll see what happens. Anyway, Noel, thank you so much for all your help! ... If you happen to find something else in the future (befor I do, that is ), please let me know. As soon as I can come out with a solution for this, I'll post it here
