The lock in the Network Preferences opens automatically
My 6 months old intel-based iMac is connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable and a router. For about 4 months there was no problem. Then suddenly I kept being disconnected from the internet for no obvious reason. When I looked into the network preferences I noticed that the lock, which prevents changes of the settings and which can be opened only with the password, had opened AUTOMATICALLY without anybody entering the password. After I close the lock and reset the router I can go online again, after a day or so the same happens again. What could be the reason for this?

Try this, go to Security and Privacy in System Preferences and unlock if locked, then tick the second box down in "For all accounts on this computer" called "require an administrator password to access system preferendes with lock icons"

Given that you are logged in as that user, and most likely the admin user of the Mac, then it makes sense that you can change your own settings. If you were logged in as a different user, then you would not have access to change the settings for this admin account.

Now the first question is, when you are saying connecting to personal hotspot, have you always been using the iPhone to connect to the internet? Are you someplace where the only place to connect is available via tethering to the iPhone's celluar network? Or do you have other options? -
My 2012 Mini OS 10.7.5 cannot see the Ethernet connection to my Actiontec GT701 WG. The Network Preferences says "cable unplugged". The WiFi connection is working fine. Please Thank You
Never mind, problem solved. When I retunred to the Network tab the message had changed to "connected, no IP address" so I got that from the WiFi tab and configured the Ethernet manually. Have a nice day @:-)#

How do i make a tab active and make it stay that way always. If i put a website in my home page in order for the tabs to open automatically in that same homepage , this setting is not working, every time I open a tab , the window appears white .
By default Firefox opens a blank page for a new Tab, there is no setting to change that action without installing an add-on.

Built-In Ethernet Port Doesn't Show Up In The Network Preference Pane
My ethernet port no longer shows up in the Network preferences pane under Network Status. The status Airport and the Internal Modem are still displayed though. Plugging in an ethernet cable causes my machine to crash; sometimes I get a message that I need to hold down the power button to reboot, and other times command line-like text is displayed on top of whatever was on screen.
The only change I've made to my system since last using a wired connection was installing Security Update 2006-001 on March 1st and OS X Update 10.4.5 on February 14th. After running the 10.4.5 updater, my machine initially refused to reboot. On the first attempt, it played the start up chime, but the screen remained black. The second time, the Apple logo appeared, but the spinning pinwheel never did. The third attempt was successful and my system appeared to be functioning normally.
How do I get my ethernet port to work again?Does "Built-in Ethernet" show up as a choice in the 'Show:" popup? If so, is it configured as you would expect? For instance, if "TCP/IP" is set to use DHCP, do you have an IP address, subnet mask, etc.? There is an "off" setting for TCP/IP; make sure that hasn't been selected somehow.
There is also an "Assist Me" button that will let you launch the diagnostics app. Does this also crash the Mac? If not, what are the results of its tests?
Also, you may want to do a permissions repair with Disk Utility if you haven't done this since applying the updates.
If you still get crashes, there may be a conflict with a log-in item, particularly if you have any third party ones. (Check that in the "Accounts" pref.) One way to diagnose things like that is by creating a new test account & logging into it. If the problems go away, you can assume a user cache, .plist, or login item is the problem.
If none of this turns up anything, you may need to reinstall the OS. Short of that, you can try downloading the 10.4.5 combo update & running it. It replaces more components than the "delta" update so it just might do the trick. Besides, if you end up having to reinstall the OS, having the combo version handy will save you the time of downloading & installing any incremental updates to get back to 10.4.5.
As always, backup all important files before applying any updates.

After having the MacBook Pro for about 1.5 years, the Wi-Fi randomly disconnected. Ethernet works fine, however, whenever I tried clicking "Turn Wi-Fi On", nothing happens. I have tried a SMC reset, resetting the PRAM (resetting the PRAM worked for a bit and then suddenly it didn't), and shutting down/restarting the laptop multiple times. Often times does the Wi-Fi turn back on, however it immediately disconnects after about a minute. Now I have come to a point where, in the Network Preferences area, the Wi-Fi option is not available on the list that is on the left side of the preferences. A PRAM reset solved this case, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore. I took it into a local Mac store, where they said that they would need to check if it was the Wi-Fi card that was causing the problem and would need to charge me $50 for the tech service to check it out (which is obviously what I would not do...at least if there is some way to go around this). Help.

My notebook cord recently short fused the office. I have replaced the cord and the computer seems to working fine, except the internet wont work. It states it is connected in the network preferences. can any one help?

My Wi-Fi connection on my iMac drops frequently. The other computers in the house do not have this problem. If I go into the Network Preferences and choose my Network it connects immediately but it does not remember the setting and I must reselect my network frequently.
The iMac picks up a wireless signal from the back of the screen, so you would want to avoid having it close to a wall, or in a confined area where the wireless signal cannot easily reach the iMac's antenna.
We don't know how far the iMac is from your wireless router, or how many walls or other obstructions might be in the signal path that would limit the quality of signal that the iMac receives.
Nor do we know whether you might have a cordless phone near the iMac, or whether you may be using a wireless keyboard and/or mouse....all of which can interfere with the wireless signal.

I have been downloading pictures and they open up in Preview which is fine but I downloaded a bunch of them and now every time I open preview, ALL those pictures open up. This also happens with MS word - the last document open automatically opens. HELP!

I am having difficulties connecting my 2102 macbook air to the internet using 10.9.1 mavericks. The problem is that when I select the networck in the preferences networks panel, the panel extends down and says

my machine keeps serching under the network menu item but it cannot connect to any network. I can connect tho this network no problem using my iphone or through my main computer which has a wired link.
I have tried an apple hardware test which showed up as having no problems.

Look in the Bridge preferences (Adobe Bridge CS6 / preferences) general section. Under behavior is a checkmark in front of the option: "when a camera is connected, Launch Adobe Photo Downloader"
uncheck it and you should be OK.
Your eReader, smart phone, tablet etc are all recognized as a camera when connected to the USB port, Hence the application starts itself. -
D Link 120 Bluetooth adaptor Interferes with the network preferences for BT

I just purchased a D Link 120 Bluetooth adaptor adaptor for my G4 machine running OSX10.4.10.
When I connect it to a usb port, it works just fine and can see my mobile phone transfer files etc. The real problems begin when I restart my machine. On initial start up I cannot connect to the internet and in the network pane of the system preferences, I get a message saying a new port has been detected called Built in Ethernet-1
When i click apply changes, the computer once more connects to the internet, however the name under which it connects is now saying Ethernet Adaptor ((null)). In short, is there a method to prevent the Bluetooth adaptor from interfering with my settings to connect to the internet?

Installation wizard is going to the background when opened automatically
Hi,
I am using Safari to download a dmg file. The size of the dmg file is only 2 MB.The dmg file is proper and it contains a valid software installation.
In safari, the setting for opening the downloaded file is set.
Problem:
When i download the dmg file, the dmg is mounted and the .pkg file is launched to open the software installation wizard. But the installation wizard is always going behind the web browser and the user cannot see the installation wizard. This behaviour is observed only in Mac OS 10.6 and 10.6.2. This behaviour is not observed in Mac OS 10.5.6.
Please let me know why the installation wizard losing focus and going behind the browser when the dmg is downloaded and mounted.

We have internet explorer 9.0 (and we tried it with 10) and when we want to proceed with it, it opens for a second an goes to the background.
So it opens in the External Adobe Reader. But i know we can alt-tab it but it needs to be automatically and that worked just with Reader 8.
So do you have any idea of how we can fix this or is there a workaround available for this problem.
