  • I cannot install mac os x snow leopard as i dont have the previous installation disk os x 10.5.8 and I cant remember the password for the mac. How can I install snow leopard.

Hi I have just received Mac OS X Snow leopard but when I tried to install it i couldn't as I have forgotten the password for the mac and I can't find the disk for OS X 10.5.8 its running on. Is there any way to install the new software without both of these?

you can reset your password. restart, and hold down Command-s before the apple logo appears (when the screen is white). you will see scrolling scripts until you see something like "root:" then type /sbin/mount -uw / to mount the disk. after that, type sudo passwd admin or whatever your admin password is. type in the new password two times. it doesn't show what you typed when you type the password so make sure you are pressing the right keys. after you done that, type exit to start up the computer. now you will be able to login with the new password.

  • My Mac Mini with Snow Leopard doesn't boot

When booting, I see a gray screen, a blue screen and another gray with the
little round activity meeter which suddenly stops, and the picture freezes.
Is there any good step-by-step guide for troubleshooting this?
I'm not sure I have 10.6.2, but I keep it upgraded.

Is your Mac Mini purchased new since August 28, 2009? If it is, are you using the Mac Mini Snow Leopard installer disc? Only the disc prebundled with such Mac Minis will install a Mac OS X on those Mac Minis.
If it is older, are you using the retail 10.6 installer disc which looks like * If not, only those discs, which are not labelled OEM, Upgrade, or DropIn will install 10.6 on your Mac. You can't use the disc prebundled with another Mac on it.
Use the startup manager to boot the discs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
If the hard disc is not apparent, a data recovery software may be necessary if your data is not backed up*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If your hard drive is present, read what I said earlier about booting off the correct installer disc, if the hard disk is not able to boot, and booting off the Snow Leopard installer. That will allow you to repair the directory of a backed up system. If your system is not backed up, and won't boot, then look at my backup link above to recover your system first before attempting any installation or directory repair of your hard disc. Any attempt install a new system on a hard disc that won't boot an existing system will only result in a corrupted system. Any attempt to repair a directory may result in worse issues if the hard drive is marginal. So at least having a recovered data set if not a backed up one is essential before doing any repairs on your system.

  • VPN addresses that worked in Snow Leopard doesn't work in Lion configurations

    Hi!
I need to connect to a VPN (PPTP) to access some link addresses that are configured through this VPN.
I can connect to VPN in both OS (Snow and Lion), however only in the Snow Leopard I can access correctly the links that I need, on Lion I get this error:
    Host xxxxxxxxxxxxxx not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
On Lion I can ping to IP address but I can't ping to host name. I already set the hosts file and it's not working. I tried to use OpenDNS and it's not working also.
Anyone has some idea? I already spent more than a week searching on google to a possible solution but unfortunatly I can't get.
    Thanks!

    To answer my own question...
When using the method where both computers are hooked together with a single ethernet cable --
Go to SnowLeopard machine and set IPv6 to automatic, and select away from DHCP to manual.  It will do a self-assigned IP address.
Got to the Yosemite machine and configure it's ethernet to IPv6, DHCP to manual, and put in an IP address one different from the self-assigned address that the SL machine took.  We also changed the net mask to 255.255.0.0 from 255.255.255.0, and set the server to the .0 of the self-assigned class C.  Those last two steps might not be necessary.

  • PSE6 for the Mac and a Snow Leopard question.....

Hi- I am beta testing Snow Leopard and would like to test my PSE6 app in Snow Leopard but I am having an issue with what I need to copy over from the working version in Leopard over to Snow Leopard. Just dragging the folder is not enough since I get a message saying something like it's not authorized- sorry I can't remember the exact wording but I am hoping someone can tell me what files I need to copy over to SL. Thanks! Judy

For any time, any version of OS X you must totally reinstall PSE rather than moving it. The PSE installer puts things in far too many locations for the migration assistant to find them all and many are at a system level where only Root could move them. Far easier just to run the installer again.

  • I have a MAC that runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  The new OSX Mavericks is free for download and I was thinking about upgrading.  Will my Creative Suite 4 (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, InDesign) work with OSX Mavericks?

Was hoping to keep my Creative Suite 4 just a little longer.  Will it be possible with Mavericks?

    Uh uh, I see!
Also it seems I can use my time machine backup:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migration_Assistant_(Apple)
together with Migration Assistant. This would work. Thanks
Now I need to figure out the Windows part. I need a full backup of Windows as well, with all the programs. In particular I need to be sure I can maintain the graphic card drivers.
You don't want to know how long took for me to find out how the **** I could update my graphic card drivers in Windows on my Macbook pro. Unfortunately there was a lot of misleading propaganda from Apple about bootcamp, saying that the new intel processor would have worked fine with Windows. Sad that everything was a lie. When installing Windows with bootcamp the graphic card program was unable to find and install the graphic card drivers update . Took me 2 weeks reading through thousands of angry posts of disappointed costumers to find out how to do that. I do not want to reapeat this dreadful experience.
After one year and a half with my Macbook pro I have a system I am TERRIFIED to touch. It is very very fragile, and any little change can destroy everything. It barely works. that's why I am so scared to re-install the OS

  • IMac with Snow Leopard doesn t work without second display connected

Utility disc on boot cd (scan disk & rights repair)
Even when I try to boot cd without second screen, I ve white screen
    (after a update to 10.6.4)
    Help me please

    Hi Tony,
I don't how these instructions are the same, here is what the article says:
    _Resetting PRAM and NVRAM_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.
Your original post said *"Restart the mac and depress the alt, command, P and R keys simultaneously. You should hear the boot chime. Keep the keys depressed until you hear the boot chime a further three times. On the final boot chime release the keys and let the mac boot normally."* How I understand your post that totals 4 chimes vs. the 2 Apple specifies. Am I missing something?

  • I migrated my mobileme to the cloud without OSX Snow Leopard.  I then installed the updated software and still cannot access my mail through the mail on my dock.  do i need to buy another app?

Can you help me figure this out.  At the apple store they said install snow leopard then buy some app to get your mail to work on your macbook. the one guy said it'll prompt me to it, but i can't figure it out

I'm sorry.  I must not have been too clear.  I got Lion installed and I can't get into my mail without logging into iCloud.  I used to be able to just click on the mail/stamp icon on my dock.  And I kind of remember the guy at apple saying I had to buy something else in the app store after I successfully installed lion (which I just accomplished)  Thanks for your help!

  • ITunes 10.5.2 Snow Leopard: home sharing works but what has happened to "show items not on my computer"

Question says it all: I can still see and play music from another home shared Mac, but in this latest iTunes version the option dialogue (to limit the items displayed to those not already on the viewing computer) at the bottom of the window is no longer there. Why not? This is a very useful way of syncing libraries between shared computers, and it is still mentioned in the Help file. Has Apple not noticed it has gone?

    @Dr-House:
    Dude this worked!!!
    this was really bothering me!
thanks a ton for posting and helping all us noobies!

  • The play button on HTML5 video doesn't work, however the play option in the context menu does

I have embedded a video using HTML5 using the mp4, webm, and ogg formats.
In Firefox the video poster displays as do the native controls. When the video is clicked on (either on the poster or the play button on the controls) the poster disappears to be replaced with the first frame of the video. However the video then fails to play.
If i right click over the video and select play it plays fine, similarly if i then click the pause button it pauses, the play button still does not work though.
The video plays in all other browsers that i have tested in without an issue.

    Hi Obverse,
Thank you for contacting support. To better understand how the video is embedded, could you please post a link to the video or an example of where the HTML play button does not play a video?

  • The "Print what you like" bookmarklet doesn't work since the upgrade. When you click it, nothing happens.

I use a program called "print what you like", and I have a bookmarklet installed for it. So when I'm on a page I want to use the program on, I click the bookmarklet and a sidebar window opens allowing me to modify the web page, etc. to how I want it before I print it. Now, when I'm on a page I want to use it on, when I click the bookmarklet, nothing happens. Some small text briefly appears about javascript??? but then disappears. So now I can't use the program.

Do you have javascript enabled in Firefox? To use bookmarklets, that is necessary.

  • Can the new Mac Mini boot Snow Leopard from an external hard drive?

I currently boot my 2009 Mac Mini from a FW800 external drive with 10.6.8. If I just plug my external drive into a new 2011 Mac Mini, will it boot into Snow Leopard if I set it as the startup disk or will I get a kernel panic?

I bought a 2011 Mac Mini, which came with Lion installed. I thought maybe I could repartition it and have a Snow Leopard partition. So I repartitioned it (500gb split into two 250gb partitions). I named the new partition "SnowLeopard" just to make it easy for me to tell the difference.
I attached the external DVD and put in a Snow Leopard installer disc, holding down the C key so it would boot and install from that, but it just spun for awhile. Doesn't appear to work.
Then I read somewhere else that someone had managed to clone a copy of Snow Leopard onto an external drive and boot from that. In their situation they were talking about a MacBook, but the principle seemed sane.
So I rebooted, holding down the T key to put the Mac Mini into Target hard disk mode, and attached it via Firewire to another MacMini (circa 2008 or so, not sure of year, but it was upgraded last year to Snow Leopard and has been upgraded along and along). Then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Snow Leopard (that is, the entire hard disk-- System and all applications and data) to my newer Mac Mini's "snow leopard" partition.
For yucks, when it was done cloning, I restarted the older Mac Mini, and had it boot from the newer Mac Mini's snow leopard partition--- it worked! To make it easy to tell the difference, I changed the desktop background to something completely different. I think I tried booting from Lion but I can't remember if that worked.
Then I rebooted the newer Mac Mini, which booted up in Lion, of course. Going into System Settings, I changed the startup disk to the "snow leopard" partition, and rebooted, and it booted up in Snow Leopard.
I have yet to test the applications on the Snow Leopard partition. Another problem has arisen.
Because with both of the Mac MInis being active on the network, they both had the same computer and user name. So I renamed the newer Mac Mini to something completely different, and changed the password.
Unfortunately, now I cannot change any other setting in the System Settings that requires a password. While the newer Snow Leopard lets me log in with the new user and new password, whenever I try to click the "lock" icon to change something, I'm prompted for a username and password. Apparently this is some different username and password than either the new or old username/password.
I've tried various combinations of both: new user/old password, old user/new password, old user/old password, etc.
So if you do what I've done, be careful about changing the username and password on your cloned computer. I think it may be wiser to create a new user and then delete the old cloned users. I may just have to re-clone the old Mac Mini to the new one again.
If anyone has any ideas about this password conundrum, please pass along!
