The Macbook Pro: Good? Bad? Ok? You Decide.

Hi everyone. I'm definitely thinking about getting a Macbook Pro, but before I dedicate myself to getting one, I want to hear from you. What have been your experiences with your own, or a friends Macbook Pro? I heard that there were a few heat problems, but then I also heard that the problems were solved; what's the story on that? All together, tell me if you think I should get a Macbook Pro? Is it worth it, or do you not think so? The one I'm looking at is $2,099(1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, 15.4in.), does anyone have that specific model? If so please reply. I've been on Windows for a while, but I'm almost defintely going to get a Macbook Pro, however, now I'm looking to you to decide. Your the deciding factor for me, so tell me what you think.
Thanks SO MUCH!
Macbook Pro "MBP"   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Hi everyone. I'm definitely thinking about getting a
Macbook Pro, but before I dedicate myself to getting
one, I want to hear from you.
Good to see you want to be an informed buyer.
What have been your
experiences with your own, or a friends Macbook Pro?
I love my mac book pro.
I heard that there were a few heat problems, but then
I also heard that the problems were solved; what's
the story on that?
The story is that some people are melodramatic regarding the heat issue claiming "3rd degree burns" on every part of their body where realistically only an exploding Sony battery will cause that.
For the more serious MBP users, some have experienced heat rash, minor 1st and 2nd degree burns due to excessive use while hot. This is generally caused by direct contact with skin - and generally does not occur when there is some sort of barrier between the person and the computer - such as pants.
Many peoples' mac book pros just get hot when doing major processes like rendering video and audio, and sometimes watching DVDs. These are processes that are appropriate sources of heat. Other users have had excessive heat with regular use like using Safari and Word Processing. That would be excessive heat.
While many complained about the heat, I saw more complaints then I did people saying "I tried to explain to Apple how hot the device is and they didn't care". I think it was a lack of communication to apple of the problem.
Regardless, some people took it upon themselves to open up their computers to check out the heating source, and some found "inappropriate" thermal paste application. Now I put inappropriate in quotes because unless they are an apple technician, they have no right to say what appropriate thermal paste is on this computer with a new processor. Many had re-applied the thermal paste with success and some without. Bottom line is that their assumption was arbitrary, and they should have took their computers to an appropriate technician for evaluation.
Bottom line - case is aluminum --> it is designed to dissipate the heat --> it will get hot at times --> if it gets too hot with simple applications you should bring it in.
All together, tell me if you think
I should get a Macbook Pro? Is it worth it, or do you
not think so? The one I'm looking at is $2,099(1GB
RAM, 80GB HDD, 15.4in.), does anyone have that
specific model?
You did not make mention of the processor speed, but I assume it is 2.0GHZ. Mine is similar in that I have a 100GB HD. I think you will be happy with the speed of the machine and all that apple has to offer. I have had minimal problems, and the few that I did have were handled quickly and appropriately by apple technicians in store and at Apple Depot all within 3 business days.
If so please reply. I've been on
Windows for a while, but I'm almost defintely going
to get a Macbook Pro, however, now I'm looking to you
to decide. Your the deciding factor for me, so
tell me what you think.
No you should decide. It's your money, and your right to play with the machine first to see if it's what you want. First you need to decide if you want this OS, then decide if the MBP is right for you. You can have a very similar machine with the MacBook for a bit cheaper, if you don't need every bell and whistle.
Good luck with your purchase, your best bet is to go to a store, grab an employee and go over the computer top to bottom to make sure you're making the best investment for you. Of course we're all going to say to buy one!!!

i have an early 2011 15" MBP and it runs the Sims 3 just fine. I do not have any of the expansion packs for the game but as long as your MBP meets the minimum requirements you should be just fine

  • The Macbook Pro without retina, can you add ram your self to it?

Will Ram be user replaceable for the macbook pro without retina?

The apple customer support told me that it is only possible to change the ram, but it is not possible to change the harddrive anymore, otherwise you will loose your warranty.
I first thougt it was a bad joke, but it isn´t guys. If you want another harddrive they do it for you for 150 bucks/hour…

  • Is the MacBook Pro good for typing papers in college?

I am looking at getting a MacBook Pro with retina display for college, but is it useful for typing papers??

It's not so much the hardware but rather the proper software that you need. I suggest using Microsoft Word - some people prefer other word processors, but Word can do everything and more than you will need and it's particularly good at APA styles and templates - you can create your own templates or download templates from the Internet that will work cross-platform.
Word for Mac is so full-featured that, as I said, it has features that you may never need, but if you do need them, they're there.
I'm beginning to have a preference for Word for Windows in Office 2013. But there is supposed to be a Office 2014 for Mac coming out later this year and I'm betting that it's going to look a lot like the Windows version.
    Good luck,

  • HT204347 Do you connect the charger in the MacBook Pro battery damage if using device ?

Do you connect the charger in the MacBook Pro battery damage if using device ?
i am sorry i not good speak english

Provided you are using the correct charger for your Mac (13" have a 65 watt charger, 15" and 17", an 85 watt charger), it has enough capacity to power the computer for normal tasks, and the leftover power can charge the battery at the same time. If you are doing something very intensive, there may not be leftover power, but the Mac will take power from the battery if needed. Once the battery is fully charged, the pilot light in the charger plug will change from orange to green and no further charge will be applied to the battery.
You can use your Mac plugged to the charger with no damage to the battery or the computer.

  • Is the MacBook Pro 13 inch good enough?

Is the non retina  MacBook Pro 13 core i5 with 4g of ram good enough for nonprofessional  video editing  making apps surfing the web watching videos ? Or can I get a MacBook Air 13 inch ? is these two good  enough for what I want ? And what is the difference between them and the MacBook Pro 13 inch core i7 with 8g of ram ? Is it a big difference between them ? Which one of these three you advice me to go with ?

That will work fine. I would eventually stick 8G of RAM in it though. I have 8G in mine and have run low and started paging out already. Safari and Flash are big RAM hogs.

  • Need to get a mibile computer and i am considering the macbook pro 15". Is that a good idea?

Need to get a mibile computer and i am considering the macbook pro 15". Is that a good idea?

The 15" is the ideal size, the 17" is a bit larger and more comfortable.
The 13" is a bit cramped, the 11" forget it.
The 11 and 13" have the poor Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics (solely) which are not good at 3D gaming/video and tend to overheat as the CPU is also doing the graphics.
The 2.0 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro has a slightly better video card that does average on most current 3D games.
The 2.2Ghz MacBook Pro (and higher) does excellently on 3D games with the powerful 1GB radeon 6750M and "future proofs" your computer investment for 3, 5, 7 years or longer.
It all depends upon your portability and use needs.
If your not a 3D gamer and can afford to replace your machine in shorter time periods and all you need is a basic laptop, then one of the smaller thinner machines will do. In fact even a Windows PC laptop can do. There really isn't any advantage of going for a Mac laptop at the lower end excpet for status symbol appeal. Your going to be paying $1500 for a laptop that a $800 PC will do just as well.
However if your needing more of a portable workhorse machine the 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro or better is ideal, it can run jsut about all the operating systems out there well, bootcamp into Windows and everythng with it's strong hardware and decent sized screen.
Also the 15" and up have the optional ANTI-GLARE screens which is great for classes and at work where you can't control the enviroment to reduce reflections.
If your on the go a lot, you can get a iPad in addition to the 15" MacBook Pro, if you need a larger screen you can buy that and use the MBP as a desktop machine sort of.
The smaller Mac machines don't drive a larger monitor very well, really you need a dedicated graphics card.

You may have a Safari third party add on installed that was compatible with the previous version of Safari but not 5.1. Try troubleshooting > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • Is there any way to restore data from an external drive to another external drive without using the macbook pro you backed up?

Is that I sold my macbook pro an the person who bought it needs it quickly so I have an external drive but it is not portable so I bought a portable external drive but it may take a while to arrive so I backed up my data with the external drive that I have in my house but I would like to know if I can restore my data to the new external drive without the macbook pro and just with the external drive of my house to the portable external drive.
    Thank you

No, that's not possible. A computer is required in order to effect such a transfer. Connect both drives to your computer. You can use Disk Utility to clone one drive to the other. Be sure you first partition and format the new drive:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new external drive. Source means the old external drive.

  • HT1386 How do you sync your itunes from the Iphone to the macbook pro?

How do you sync your itunes from the iphone to the macbook pro?
Let's say, I have an Iphone 3GS and it was synced to my older pc (I know...) and it crashed and I can't retrieve my files on there.  I want everything that I have on my 3Gs: photos, videos, music, notes, voice recordings, etc...  Now, I recently upgraded to 4Gs.  I can sync almost everything via icloud but there are files like photos, videos, other music that I cannot sync or for some weird reason it won't work over the cloud.  So I want to move all of those information to my macbook pro (upgraded from pc... yes!).  How do I move everything in my iphone backed up to my itunes in my mac book so that I can sync it to my new 4Gs?

I have a 3GS IPhone and have not been able to find Cloud on it anywhere (I was instructed to go to Settings, General, etc). I have also been told I should download update from I Tunes and have not been successful doing that either. I know my I Pad has the Cloud and I am wanting to sync the calendar from the phone to the pad. Any suggestions?

  • How do you install Photoshop 5.0 onto the Macbook Pro?

so i've been trying to install the photoshop elements 5.0 for about a weeeek now...lol & this thing still isnt working! i'm really gettin angry! jk. but i'm serious tho, how do you install this onto the macbook pro?

OK seriously, I did not want to make you feel stupid, it was in fact the first thing that came to my mind. Now, if you got something from Costco, there is probably a box or a CD with it, which should tell you whether it is a PC version or a Mac version. These apps usually come with items like a camera or maybe a scanner included. Please take the time and check what you got. If there is nothing on the disk telling you it's a Mac-version, youprobably got the wrong thing.
The Mac version is available via Adobe's website, just look for Photoshop Elements 9, that's the current version. There even is a trial available.

I don't quite understand what you are saying? If i recieve and read an iMessage on the iPhone and then switch on my Mac, I don't get a notification about a new message, but that iMessage appears on the conversation.

  • Is it bad for the MacBook Pro to play World of Warcraft?

Is it bad for the MacBook Pro to play World of Warcraft?

There will just be a little more wear and tear than "normal" use, because the heat goes way up and the fans max out while playing, as with most gaming. I guess that affects the overall lifespan of the laptop.
I played all the time on my MBP early 2008, and still play on my 2011 MBP. The '08's fans had to be replaced but still works fine.
