The MBP From Heck

OK, I'm hoping someone here has some good advice for me.
I purchased a refurbished first gen 15" MBP back in October. Since then, I have had nothing but trouble with it. It has been in for repairs five times now, and it's still having issues.
It started with random, intermittent crashes. I thought it was perhaps overheating, so I checked the CPU temp and it seemed high, but within limits. The crashes started getting worse, and I finally whipped out a copy of TechTool Pro and checked. It found 160+ bad blocks in the first 1% of the drive alone! What's worse, the number increased every time I ran it.
So fine, I know hard drive failure when I see it. I take it in to the local Apple Store to get it fixed. They replace the drive, test the machine, say it's fine now. Okay.
Two weeks after getting it back, it starts crashing intermittently again. So I checked again: sure enough, bad blocks were on the drive again, and increasing in number once again.
I take it back in a second time. They replace the drive again and the logic board. Test it, say it's fine, give it back to me.
A few weeks give or take later, I start having issues again, same deal as before. Not trusting the local store, I call AppleCare, tell them the issue, they send me the box, yadda yadda. Replace logic board and hard drive again. Get it back.
A few weeks (not sure exactly how many) after that, the headphone port starts not working (the issue that's been reported before, with it turning red like there's a plug in there but nothing is there). Given I'm using this machine to work with, and I was working on sound apps at the time, this is kinda important.
Take it in, to the local store again (hey, it's not the hard drive this time, right?) They agree about the expected problem, take it in, replace whatever the audio I/O board is, return it. Okay.
Well, the headphones now work, but about a week later I checked the internal microphone, and it no longer works (I use it for conference calls). Tried plugging in an external mic. Line In no longer works, either.
I live with it for a while, since--being a work machine--I'm losing a lot of money in downtime at this point.
The keyboard starts failing.
I take it in to the local store. They say they're so backed up with iPhone problems that it'll be a week to fix it there. I take it to the second of three stores in the area. They have the time but not the part. I take it to the third store, they have the part and the time, at least for the keyboard, but not for the mic. I come pick it up the next day.
About two weeks or so later, I start noticing intermittent crashes again.
I run TechTool again, and there's about 1600 bad blocks, all confined to the last 10% of the drive. And the number is rising again.
Now, I've owned or been co-owner of about 20 Macs in almost as many years, including refurbished models, and never once have I ever had problems like this, both in severity and in frequency. My MBP spends a majority of the time on a desk connected to test hardware, so it's not jostled around a lot, it's well ventilated, and I always make sure when I do pick it up to wait until it's fully asleep and the hard drive is parked. I've had PowerBooks in the past that I've treated similarly, and never once had problems with them. My wife owns a MacBook, carries it around with her all the time, knocks into it, leaves it sitting sideways on the couch, etc, and apart from a swollen battery has never had a single issue with it.
So I really don't think it's anything I'm doing. I think this machine is just cursed somehow. The problem is, at this point, AppleCare doesn't seem to be able to do anything about it. I need to take it in again, but since the closest Apple store is a 30 minute drive away, I haven't been able to schedule the time to get down there yet, and I'm not sure calling in to AppleCare will help (it certainly didn't before).
Are the first gens just this badly designed? Is there any way I can get Apple to for sure fix this machine once and for all? I mean, this is not only below the quality standards I've come to expect from Apple, this is below quality standards for even third-rate PC laptops, and that just doesn't seem right at all. Yet here I sit with a MBP that has had practically every part except the display replaced *at least* once, and it still doesn't work.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I just want it fixed once and for all. My work was considering this a test run to see if my claims about the better value and reliability of Macs are true, and obviously right now they're never going to even consider buying a Mac again. I can't really say I blame them right now.
Thank you!
edit: didn't realize the title was a forbidden word

I personally would say it's time for a new machine... and I'm typically the last person to say that someone should get a new one... but your list of problems would seem to warrant it. Try giving Apple Customer Relations a call:
Apple Customer Relations (800) 767-2775
You seem to have your repair history fairly well documented. You also seem to be pretty level headed about the whole thing... which is good. It never helps to just blow up about something like this. Explain your situation to them and ask if they would consider a replacement. Please come back here and let us know how you make out.

  • What is that sound effect when you wake the MBP from sleep?

There is some sound effect every time I wake the MBP up from sleep. I am not sure what is making that sound. It sound like "pffft", I hope that makes sense.

Hi I hve the same problem mi MacBook Pro doeas that, the sound that makes is the one I have for default, Funk (for example if my computer sleeping with the screen open and I press any key on the keybord it makes that sound) if you want you can try this, to chek if that is the sound that you heare, close all the windows and try to use expose.
remember the sound that you are going to heare is the one that you have for default.
Another thing is that I re-instal the OS and the computer stops from doing that but then start again when I eject my iPod from the finder window but I left it conected from the USB and then when the computer was sleeping I desconected it.
I know that maybe nothing of this can help you but I want to let you know that you are not alone.
If you found the fix for that thing please let me know.

They usually stop trying after a while when it has become obvious that repairing is just not going to work. Once they start messing around too much inside, other problems tend to crop up.
If I were you, I'd call customer relations and tell them the whole story. Also tell them that you need to have a reliable machine and can't afford to keep having it repaired, not to mention the psychological effect of not knowing if the machine is going to hold up or stop working.

  • What might my problem be if my display will not come on after waking the computer from sleep or powering it on?

When I try to wake the MBP from sleep (opening the lid, pressing spacebar, or pressing power button), the computer display doesn't come on.  The light on the front shows it is awake but there is no display or backlight though the caps lock lights up.  I have tried an SMC and PRAM reset to no avail.  I tried to start up in safe mode but now as soon as the screen comes up to select the user the display goes out and I don't know how to get it to stop trying to boot up in safe mode.  Any suggestions as to what the problem might be and some possible solutions?

  • Stop MBP from sleeping when lid is shut - for watching movies on Apple TV

I recently bought a MBP and Apple TV both work fine but because the MBP is connected to an external monitor, the MBP is always in clamshell mode (lid is shut) So the thing keeps going to sleep when I'm watching movies on the TV screen. I have the 'wake for network access' set to on, this doesn't seem to work either.
Basically how can I keep the MBP from going to sleep when the lid is down and no activity has occurred, so I don't have to get up halfway through a movie to start up the Mac again, cos the homesharing connection has been lost because the MBP has gone to sleep again!!!?
    Thanks

Is it possible to set up the mac against one user account so that when that account is open the macbook does not go into sleep if the macbook lid is shut? However I would want the other user accounts to set the mac to sleep if the lid is shut.
You might be able to do it with Insomniax. I haven't tried it in the way you asked but it might be able to if you se it up to run in one account and not the other.
Also is it possible to tell the mac to go to sleep if the lid is shut when running on batteries but to stay awake with the lid shut when running on mains power?
    None that I know of.
The MacBook will go to sleep if it is connected to an external monitor and you close the lid. Once it is closed you can wake it up and use it. The two links referenced in the other post show how to do this. You can also do it with just a wireless blue tooth mouse and no external keyboard. Just set it so the bluetooth devices will wake it. You also can use your Apple remote to wake it with an external display connected. It will allow you to use Front Row with the lid closed on the external display.

  • I have a MBP from late 2009.  It works fine in all regards except recently, when an icon is grabbed by the built-in track pad, I can't drop the item and have to shut my computer down to resolve the issue.  How do I reinstall the driver for the trackpad?

Ok, I thought the subject line was the extent of what I could type.  My trackpad has been working fine for over two years now.  But recently if I accidently (or intentionally) drag a picutre that is highlighted on any website, the cursur never lets go of the image and all "clicking" capabilities become useless.  It even manages to lock up the rest of the computer, such that trying to restart manually doesn't work.  I litterally have to hold the power button till the MBP turns off and reboot.  I have looked for a way to unistall and reinstall the driving, but I'm either redirected to a non-Apple website or else I'm directed to the new "Retina" MBP section of the Apple store.  I don't have any other mouse that is connected to this computer, so there shouldn't be any weird interference between mutiple mice.
Is there an official applie support section where I can either download the proper driver to simply resinstall the orignal 2009-2010 MBP trackpad driver, or a way for the "Software Update" under the Apple logo in the top file bar to acknowledge this problem an automatically patch it?  I'd rather not have to go into an Apple store just to get this quirk (which doesn't happen 100% of the time anyways) figured out.  I simply don't want it to occur while I'm in the middle of a larger project and then get stuck being unable to save a document and I have to forcefully restart my entire computer (nuisance aside).
    Thank you,
    Hamilton

    Many Thanks, Kurt.
I knew I'd seen the solution you've provided somewhere - either in MacWorld or MacFormat - but couldn't remember the Gatekeeper bit!
I shall save it somewhere VERY safe now in case this happens again …
You have made an old man very happy and saved me from worrying that senile decay had suddenly set in. (I was 70 last week so you might understand the situation from that.)

  • How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
    Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!

  • I finally made the change to a MBP from a Thinkpad. Now I'm lost.

Ok. So after 20 years of using a PC, I've converted to a MAC. I just purchased a top of the line MBP. I am trying to setup the Desktop like a PC (i.e. HDD, DVD, Networking, My Docs, etc....)but I can't figure it out. The only thing I got so far is a headache. Can someone please explain to me how I would put these icons on my Desktop? Also. I think I deleted a folder accidentally on the task bar. It was the download folder. I still have the Application and the Documents folder.
Can you also tell me how to scroll properly? It seems I have 3 options on my mouse pad (left click, middle click, and right click. On a PC, you would hold the left click down with your left hand and scroll with your right hand -- using a swiping down motion.
How do I stop the screen from zoming in and out all the time? It seems every time I move my single finger anywhere on the mouse pad, it either zooms or zooms out.
    Thank you for your help.

I am trying to setup the Desktop like a PC (i.e. HDD, DVD, Networking, My Docs, etc....)
Unfortunately, the Mac is not really like a PC. Before you become too frustrated trying to make your Mac into a PC, let me explain how you get to these things on a Mac.
The HDD is obviously the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop. Double click that to get to the root level of your drive. This is like double-clicking on your C drive on a PC. Except everything is organized much better on a Mac. By opening that HD icon, you'll see your Applications, System, Library, and Users. The Applications folder is where your apps live. On a Mac, many of the applications are contained within a single "file", and those files are located in the Applications folder. You can drag any application's icon to the Dock (task bar) where it will stay for one-click access to that app.
The System folder is where all the OS components are located. There are very few reasons why any user should ever have to look in here so I won't bother to explain it. Library is where things such as preferences and settings are stored in files. You shouldn't have to look within the Library folder very often at all either. Think of the Library basically as where the system goes to find preferences and settings that you've already set. The Users folder is where all your data will primarily be stored. Each user of the computer has their own folder within the Users folder. Within that folder (Home folder, with a house for the currently active user), named for the short name of the account, all your documents, photos, music, movies, etc. are stored within their respective folders. This is also where you'll find the Downloads folder that you mistakenly removed from the Dock. You can just drag it back into the same location to recreate that shortcut. Dock icons are simply shortcuts to folders, files, and apps, not the actual files themselves.
Can you also tell me how to scroll properly?
Very simple. Click System Preferences in your Dock. That is where all your preferences are set and stored, unlike the confusing mess of "Control Panels" in Windows. Click Trackpad, and you will see settings for the trackpad. You can set the speed of various aspects of the trackpad, as well as set which gestures you'd like to use with the computer.
I suggest you try to forget about the clunky "left click down with your left and and scroll with your right hand" PC way of scrolling. In that trackpad area of System Preferences, just make sure that you click the "Scroll" box under two finger gestures. Then, in a scrollable window (such as a web browser) just place two fingers on the trackpad and move them up or down to scroll. There are great videos in the trackpad preferences area that will show you all the gestures and how to use them. Similarly, you can shut off the screen zooming here. I suggest you go through all the System Preference tabs to set things to your liking.
If you need clarification or have further questions, just ask!

I'm possibly wrong here but I suspect opening a brand new MBP to add parts yourself will void the warranty.  It is probably in the small print.  I certainly would not risk it for an expensive Apple product.
Some (Windows) laptops have easy access to memory and disk slots that do not necessitate taking the complete back cover off.  However, Apple does not make life easy for you.
However, if you are going for a 'used' machine it is probably worth a try.
Not possibly, definitely wrong, Ram and Hard Drive are considered user replaceable and will not void the warranty if changed.

Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar

How did you restore from your old hard drive?
Technically all that was needed was to use Migration Assistant on the fresh OS X install to migrate users accounts and programs to the new machine.
You can use a SATA to USB adapter to connect the old drive if you want to go that way and start over with a fresh install again on the new drive.

  • Bought a malfunctioning MBP from the US. Can I have it replaced in the UK?

    Hello people!!
I got an MBP from the US in late March. I switched it on 10 days ago and faced the horrible infamous "strange stripes on display" issue (link: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1423301&tstart=0 )
The MBP is now in the UK. Am I eligible for a replacement? Did anyone have such an experience?

MBP was bought in late March (3/24/08) in New York.
I got the laptop in Greece and switched it on on April's 30th (4/30/08). Stripes appeared after an hour I had it switched on.
I contacted Apple UK a couple of times (5/2&3/08). They said I was eligible for a replacement.
I shipped my MBP insured to the UK (170GBP) via DHL (5/7/08).
I got the MacBook Pro to the UK's #1 Applestore today (5/10/08). They said that the reps on the phone were wrong considering the replacement. They decided to have the display replaced.
Geniuses in Regent St - London explained explicitly that even if I had returned the MacBook Pro within the 14 days period, they wouldn't have replaced it. Which is the best way to defeat that? Who should I contact? Steve himself? I'll try to contact customer relations on Monday though. If I were in the States, everything would be fine by now.
Which is best? Living with a refurbished (erm sorry I mean a repaired) laptop that is 100% likely to still have the problem or having a brand new but rather defective laptop?
PS: There is NO Apple Greece. There are only authorized resellers in Greece aka really bad reviews for the companies all over the internet. See http://www.wewantapplegreece.com

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,

  • Two noise from right side when open the mbp

Every time when I open the laptop, there are two sound like zi zi from right side of it, before the opening music, it sounds like reading the disc, is there something wrong with the computer?

No.  The OS, when the MBP is started does a diagnostics check, testing the optical drive as a part of same.  That is the sound and it is normal.
    Ciao.

  • Can you disable the trackpad on an MBP from the command line?

Is this possible?  The MBP is a 15" Core 2 Duo, so 4 years old or so.  It was stepped on by a firefighter after a 25' chunk of a pine tree blew through the roof of our house.  The display glass is broke but the display is still pretty good.  I was going to give it to a friend, but it seems to me that the trackpad is sort of stuck in click mode.  If I have an external mouse plugged in, I can right click but not left click.  The basic functionality of the keyboard works as I can enter the password to unlock the unit, so broadly speaking, the computer seems OK overall.
Any suggestions?  The friend is not in critical need of it, so if I can't resolve this, it's no big deal.

We didn't file a claim with insurance on this computer because it was purchased in a weird fashion.  My wife is an astronomer, and at the end of the year (whenever it was) her boss told her that they actually had some leftover money and asked if she wanted a new computer.  Half of her salary is paid from a different program, not directly from the observatory, so I suggested talking to her other boss and maybe having the two bosses go in halfsies on the new computer, which they did.  This was probably 4 years ago.
About 2 years ago she bought a new MBP and this MBP was semi-retired.  It was still used occasionally, she had some projects where two laptops used together was really useful.  When the tree came through the roof, it was directly over her head.  She got hit by the ceiling, but our metal roof decelerated the tree enough that I am not a widower today.  This happened almost a year ago.  The MBP that was in her lap was relatively undamaged, it somehow got a piece of insulation dust under a key.  We got it checked out and it's been fine.
I was sitting next to her.  Lightning struck a tree a good 10-15 yards behind our house and it exploded.  The bigger chunk hit our propane tank and bounced, the one that went through our roof was 25' long and 75 lbs a foot.  We were VERY fortunate to get only some inhalation damage and some minor bumps and abrasions.  The sad thing was that we had a new dog, we'd only had him for a month a that point, and prior to that he was not afraid of thunderstorms.  Needless to say he's no longer fearless.
Anyway, back to my problem.  I'd like to take it to an Apple store for evaluation, but the closest is a two hour drive which we just don't make casually.  When I entered @NBAR's code, this is the result:

I should have mentioned that this particular box is running 10.6.8.  The only way that I can get it to left-click properly is what I'm doing right now, using Screen Sharing from my iMac.

  • How can I delay my MBP from hibernating until the lid has been closed for a set period of time?

After extensive research, I have been unable to solve this problem and I'm hoping someone can explain this to me.   Everytime I close the lid on my 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro, it immediately starts to write to disk (solid light on the front) for several seconds until it finally goes into Hibernate mode (flashing light on the front).  The problem is, I frequently close the lid, then immediately reopen it within 15-30 seconds to resume typing or to add something I may have forgotten.   Each time I reopen the lid before the light has started flashing, the MBP wakes for a moment, and allows me to resume typing.  However, the Hibernation process has already begun and within 30 seconds, the screen goes blank.   I have to wake it AGAIN, which is very annoying.
Based on my research, I could use pmset to change the hibernatemode to 0 (it is currently set at 3).   However, I dont wish to disable hibernate mode completely; I DO want it to save a hibernation image to disk if it happens to run out of battery, so that when I resume I havent lost anything.
I then researched using standby and standbydelay to attempt a delay of the write to disk when going into standby mode.   According to the pmset manual:
standby causes kernel power management to automatically hibernate a machine after it has slept for a
specified time period. This saves power while asleep
standbydelay specifies the delay, in seconds, before writing the hibernation image to disk and powering
         off memory for Standby
I then set these values as below, expecting the laptop to wait 4200 seconds (70 minutes) before trying to write to disk when I close the lid:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
Unfortunately, that did not work either.   If I close the lid, the light glows solid immediately (indicating it is writing to disk), and if I try to reopen the lid before it is done, it will wake and seem fine, then 30 seconds later it goes blank right in the middle of me typing something.   I usually have to click the mouse several times, or even the power button to re-wake it.
I do have InsomniaX installed, for when I want to close the lid and keep the machine awake permanently (while watching videos on airplay) and I have tried quitting that application to test this.  However, when I close/reopen the lid..the result is the same.   I cant keep InsomniaX enabled all the time, because it will never go to sleep when I truly want it to.   If I am not using InsomniaX, I just want to delay hibernation until he lid has been closed for a set period (say 15 minutes or more).  If I have not reopened the lid within that time, I want it to write to disk and go into hibernation mode.  And if the battery runs all the way out, I want it to go into hibernation mode before shutting down so I can recover.
I would appreciate any help in solving this problem.  Also any insight as to why the standbydelay setting above did not work.   Thanks!

Whats with the MBP lid? Dont close it ... if you're so concerned! Just go to System Preferences/Energy Saver and set it to how you like it.
