The Most FCP-Friendly Codec for Offline Editing of Clips w/ Alpha Channels

Working with full-quality DigitalJuice animated backgrounds with alpha channels in a DV timeline can feel like swimming through molasses. There are a number of options for temporarily replacing the clips with low-res proxies (Uncompressed, JPEG2000, TGA, etc.). Before conducting extensive tests, I was curious as to whether or not anyone has an opinion on which 32-bit codec might be the easiest one for FCP to process, resulting in snappier playback while offlining.

it is important to move these components out of the root Library and put them into the User Library. That way they won't cause any conflict during startup.
I've since done some trial and error testing and it appears the only component that causes a conflict during startup is AvidAVUICodec.component.
The rest work just fine with compressor and seem to add support for:
Avid 1:1x (AvidAV1xCodec.component)
Avid D100 (AvidAVd1Codec.component)
Avid DNxHD (AvidAVdnCodec.component)
Avid DV (AvidAVdvCodec.component)
Avid Packed (AvidAVpkCodec.component)
Avid Meridian (AvidAVDJCodec.component)
The original AvidAVUICodec.component was part of the Meridian codecs paired with AvidAVDJCodec.component for ABVB systems, but it doesn't seem to be required anymore. Very odd.
Now, what works with FCP 5.1.2????
Everything except Avid D100 codec (AvidAVd1Codec.component) and the AvidAVUICodec.component.
So, if want to use Avid codecs with FCP 5.1.2, just install them, trash AvidAVd1Codec.component and AvidAVUICodec.component, then move the remaining components from Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime to Users/User name/Library/Quicktime.

It seems that I am unable to render out to a Quicktime movie with both the video and the alpha channel (I can only render to one or the other). If you have FCS 2009 you can also export to Pro Res 4444.

LR Mobile: Downloading images for Offline Editing stops when not using device (iPad).

Hi everyone,
I'm using Lightroom Mobile on my iPad and I'm having issues downloading my galleries for offline editing. I'd like to hit the download button and leave my iPad for a couple of hours while a couple thousand photos are downloaded, however, as soon as I turn off the iPad and walk away for a bit of time, the sync seems to stop. Case in point: I started it last night before going to bed, left my iPad plugged in, and when I checked it this morning, it had stopped after 50 or 60 photos. It resumed as soon as I turned the iPad back on, which was still in the app.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is this a problem/limitation of iOS or a problem with the app? Any thoughts?

Yeah, Lr mobile behaviour isn't particularly friendly (I'm being very diplomatic) when it comes to off-line editing. The issue is of Adobe's making. So, don't go upsetting the folk at Apple ;-) Best you set your iPad so that it doesn't switch off. Once everything is downloaded you can set it back to auto switch off (assumes you remember).

How to enable multiple check-out and check-in for offline editing (sharepoint 2010)

I have a SharePoint site where I am using check-in check out feature for one of 'Project' document library.
By default SharePoint supports single document to be checkout for offline editing (when i click on checkout, SP ask for 'Use local draft option' for offline editing), if I select that check box, it take a local copy for offline editing in my 'SharePoint
Draft' folder.
but when I try to check-out multiple files from 'Project' document library, it does not show any form for confirmation, as shown above (use 'Local draft option') and files get checked out on server it self, but I didn't find any local copy in 'SharePoint
Draft' folder. mean sharepoint does not support multiple file check-out feature for offline editing.
Please suggest if we can check out multiple files for offline editing in sharepoint 2010.

These all links talk about the check-in check-out feature, but my issue is that, when I do select multiple files for checkout Draft’s dialog
box does not appear and offline copy of files is does not created. how to fix that issue.

What computer manufacturer makes the most "linux friendly" laptops?

I'm about to get a new laptop to replace my Dell E1505 I used untill now. i'm very happy with it, but it got old and starts to fail. I want to get a new laptop that's simular to it but new and more up to date. I looked at some of the computers avaliable and was thinking, which manufacturer makes the most linux friendly computers? Should I stick with dell or maybe HP is the better choice? What's your experiance on the subject?

From what I've seen, major manufacturers give little-to-no concern towards Linux support when designing a product. Should they have a string of products which work hassle-free, it is through coincidence alone.
To take Lenovo as an example, many of their notebooks in the past have included a wireless card they referred to as a "ThinkPad wireless adapter", which was renowned for functioning 'out of the box' with the ath5k driver. During the middle(?) of last year, and without indication, the "ThinkPad wireless adapters" changed, and now use an rtl8192se chipset. ndiswrapper has limited success (if any); a functional driver has only recently been created for this chipset; and support still missing from the kernel.
While my next laptop will probably be a Lenovo it will be for their build-quality and not their Linux support. When looking for a laptop, I recommend finding something which matches your specifications, design and price and then thoroughly checking compatibility of the components: it's the only way to be sure.

I have to agree with you. There are several forum discussions on bit rate being as high as 256 kbps but I don't see how it could be more than 96 kbps based on the poor sound quality I'm hearing. I'm comparing it to an internet radio station that is 128 kbps and sounds much better.
Am I missing something?

Actually, Mavericks is the current version of OS X replacing Mountain Lion. Mavericks will be replaced later this year by Yosemite. The upgrade to Mavericks is free. You can download the installer from the App Store.

The only criteria is: don't use JPEG for anything scientific! The compression involved with saving JPEGs means you always lose information. I tend to prefer PNG - it's compressed, but non-lossy, and also widely supported. TIFF is fine as well, but I don't think has any advantages over PNG for this application. JPEG2000 can give good non-lossy compression I think is slower to read/write than PNG.

Trying to choose the most "future friendly" video export codec for my produ

I am prepping to deliver the video of a concert film I did to a museum where it will be added to a time capsule. I dont think its the type that has a definite date for re-opening, but it could be 10 yrs.
The original footage was shot 10 yrs ago on dv camcorders, so its not HD. Uncompressed, the show is about 15gig.
Keeping it uncompressed keeps it in the highest resolution possible, and I am thinking the safest (most future friendly) way to deliver it is uncompressed, on a solid state hard drive, no motorized parts etc.
So what is the highest res (size is not an issue) format choice for me to choose in exporting the show?
I'm using FCP 7.0.3

While you are contemplating this, think back 10 years. What were the common storage media(s), playback devices, connection types and so on. How many of these are still available?
My guess is Firewire will be obsolete, USB may still be around. A solid state storage device (USB stick?) may have a better chance, BUT they are not designed as archival media - that is - they are not designed for anything beyond moving material between machines and short term storage.
Beyond what is common, there is also the issue of mechanical reliability. Anything with moving parts is a potential problem - as you seem to understand.
You might do well to consult with a digital archivist. The Getty Museum in LA has published a number of monographs on this subject. Also, I believe MIT has a digital archiving program. You may find something useful there.

Happy to help out, but you need to identify what cam or sequence settings you use to create the HD sequence.
HD means so many things, including HDV and DVCProHD.
What is it?
And what did you choose to export to that create a smaller movie file for use on the PC?
Because it seems you have converted the original footage to something else, otherwise the size would be the same.
You might try an export to h.264 that should work if your friend is using v.7 of QT on Windows.

MBP 13" i7 be good enough to run FCP or Cs5 for video editing?

Hi, I am doing some research into buying my first Mac/video editing setup, but am finding it hard on deciding which one to go for. Will a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" i7 be able to handle editing video with Final Cut Pro 7 or Adobe Cs5? I don't want to go for the 2011 15" if I don't have to..I like the potability of the 13" and would rather not have to splash out more if i don't have to..?
I am also looking into getting a Dell 24" Ultrasharp monitor to go with it.. (Thoughts..?)

Sure and it will run on the Mac Mini too, like molasses.
Perhaps you better wait until you save up some more dough, doing video is NOT cheap, there are so many extras one needs as video takes up a lot of storage space.
The software is expensive too, most people doing it buy the most powerful Mac they can get, this way they don't have to replace the software as often.

Need help choosing the best laptop or desktop for video editing.

Hi guys. I'm a videographer and am in need of upgrading my current Dell Dimension 8300 desktop to either another desktop or a laptop. My current Dell is just too slow. It takes forever to render a video.
Anyhow, what do you guys recommend for video editing? I'd like something with plenty of hard drive space, plenty of memory, and a powerful video card. There are just too many to choose from and was hoping to get some feedback.

You can find a fairly cheap quad core desktop with a nice video card. So if you need something that will last a while and not cost too much I would go this route.
If you want a laptop, put yourself in one of these categories: someone who needs high mobility/battery life (14 in screen or smaller), someone who needs high mobility with a big screen (15.4in), or someone who needs a powerful computer with a big screen (17-18.4 in).
Don't worry too much about laptop brands, only a handful of them actually make their own laptops, most of the big brands use the same two or three laptop manufacturers.
Get the most powerful intel processor you can afford, and put either a 9 series nvidia, or an ati radeon 4800 series in, four gb of ram, and a 7200 rpm hard disk.
After that it really comes down to price and personal style, I would stay away from the hp laptops, the brand that they use doesn't do so well making the internal components.
Here are some good picks.
1) ASUS G Series G50VT-X3 (15.4in)
2) Sager 5793 (17in)
3)ASUS N80 Series N80Vn-X5 (14.1in)
Asus actually manufactures their own laptops, and my experience with them has been spectacular. The Sager is a rebranded Clevo, which is one of the brands alienware, falcon northwest, and other high end companies use.

I have a program thats in PROD and I want to make modifications to it.
The program loads an internal table with a high volume of data and does a bunch of processing on each record.
I need to modify the code so that when I do the first Loop and I am processing a rectype 1 record, I now want to consolidate it with other records eg:
ctry rectype    pid date time etc ...
CA    1          2
CA    1          2
For every rectype 1 with the same pid, perform checks and consolidate the records into 1.
We are processing high volume data. So I would like to implement the most performance freindly modification.
What is the best way to do the consolidation?
So when I get the first rectype 1 within my first loop, I need to go get all the records with the same pid. Consolidate them and then delete them so I dont pick them up again.

If I understand this properly... Big if!
1) create a duplicate table
2) sort both tables by PID
3) delete duplicate PIDs from the main table. This will become your consolidated table
4) loop through the new "summary" table and loop through the original "details" table and do your consolidation logic. Use the initial binary read to identify the starting point in the table of the PID to be consolidated. This will avoid a full table scan for each summary record. Modify the summary table with the updated data.
This will be performance "friendly"
li_summary[] = original_table[].
li_details[] = li_summary[].
SORT: li_details BY pid,
      li_summary BY pid.
DELETE ADJACENT DUPLICATES FROM li_summary COMPARING pid.

I expect you are trying to use something for Alpha/Beta Testers, who are using something later than 6.0.2 in version 6, or using version 7, 8, or 9.
You are on the latest version available on OS X 10.4, you would have to be on at least OS X 10.5 win an Intel chip to use Firefox 6.
Mozilla is not doing development work on Firefox version 3.
