The mother of all re-boot problems.

Hi All,
I've got that re-boot problem that seems very common but the solutions out there aren't working.
Basically the computer will turn on, chime, grey screen comes up, shortly after apple logo, and then the gear starts turning, about 2 minutes later restart, process repeats.
I've tried.
- Booting from CD/Recovery Disk - Won't happen
- A million different key combinations, I've read about 10 different posts on key combinations and tried them all, including PRAM reset, boot from different source, etc.
Basically it's like my keyboard commands aren't being heard at all, but to test if the keyboard was working I pressed the caps lock button and the light was going on and off which tells me its powered. The only kind of input I have been able to acheive is by holding the mouse button down to eject the CD, other than that I have absolutly no control what so ever.
Would like any insight.
Cheers,
Jarrod.

HI,
If you've had your iMac for less then one year then it's covered by the one year limited warranty.
Take it to an Apple store or an Apple certified repair provider.

  • The mother of all iChat AV problems

All the computers listed below can text chat among themselves but almost all of them cannot audio or video iChat AV with each other.
I hope you can follow along, as this will get very complicated. It is a hard story to tell.
I have been working on this for about 3 weeks now. I have read just about every post in the past 3 weeks. A 2nd Level Apple Tech Support person said I should post this for all to read because it encompasses so many problems all at once without any results and I have some interesting situations. I have tried every single suggestion in the forum without any results. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple iChat support, 2nd level Apple support and Linksys support. I’m an experienced iChat AV person and have been video conferencing for 10 years, starting back with CU-SeeMe. Actually did Beta testing for that CODEC. At the end of this, I will tell you what I haven’t tried yet, and it’s only one thing. And Ralph Jones of the UK, I have read every page of your website about ichat AV and tried everything on it. Thanks for the good work along with everyone else.
I’m the tech administrator for a Day Care Center. At the Day Care Center there are 15 Macs; 12 new 14 inch iBooks - 1.3 GHz with 756 MB RAM, one -15inch PowerBook 1 GHZ with 1 Gig RAM., an iMac 1 GHz with 1 Gig RAM, and one – 17inch 1.67 GHz PowerBook with 1 Gig of RAM.
    My office has 2 Macs using iChat AV, a PowerBook 400 Titanium – 500 MB RAM and a G5 – Dual 2GHz – 3500 MB RAM.
All ADSL connections, all Verizon DSL. There are 8 different locations involved in this. 7 locations are using Linksys WRT54G routers, version 2 and 5’s, all updated to the latest firmware. My office is using a Linksys WRT54GS version 1 also updated to the latest firmware. 7 locations are using Westell 2200 DSL modems, and the one residential location that is DHCP is using a Westell 6100 Modem, the 6100 is set to default settings.
7 locations have static IP’s from the ISP and the 8th location is DHCP direct from Verizon (a typical residential set-up). Each location has 2 computers associated with it, all with iSight cameras. All 17 computers are using iChat AV through an AIM account.
All the computers are running OS 10.4.3 and are up to date as of this posting, including the J2SE 5.0 ver. 3 update and the Security Update 2005-009.
At my office and the office of the Day Care Center, all the computers are designated with a static IP. At the other locations the computers are DHCP, set to automatically get an IP from the router.
In all attempts to video iChat with all the computers, whenever an attempt is made, the 2 computers always get a video preview window and they say, “Starting video chat with …”, but then the dreaded responses always follow after trying to accept; “Did not respond”, “Fail to start video chat”, or “Cancelled the connection.”
So first, my office and the Day Care Office (DCO) have been video conferencing for over 1 year with iChat AV, but now we can no longer video chat. The only thing that changed was at both locations the routers went form an older Linksys WAP54G (A, B, & G) router to the WRT54GS ver. 1 at my office and a WRT54G ver.2 at the DCO a while ago. I can no longer video conference to the DCO nor can they video conference to me between any combination of the 4 computers at the 2 locations (a G5, PB 400, PB 1 GHz, iMac 1 GHz.). Not to long ago they all could video iChat with each other.
My office (with both computers) can iChat with the one location that is DHCP (the Verizon residential setup – both routers set to their defaults, no special stuff). But I can only video conference with the iBook not the PowerBook. In reverse, the iBook can call me but the PB can not. I have brought the PowerBook back to my office and it can video iChat back to the iBook at it’s location from the PowerBook that came from that location. The PB can even connect to my 2 computers on my router at my office. We did a 3 way to the iBook with my G5 hosting, the PowerBook at my office and the iBook at it’s location. When I take the PoweBook back to it’s original location (where the iBook is – the residential location) it can’t video conference with my office, no matter who calls whom.
In the remaining 6 locations, none of the computers can iChat with any of the other locations at all. I have only been able to iChat with the one location that is the Verizon DHCP location (residential setup) and only to the iBook not the PowerBook.
Now to get even weirder, as I said each location has at least 2 computers. At each of the 7 locations (but not my office), the 2 computers at that location, on the same router, can iChat between themselves over AIM (not BonJour) but they can not video chat with any of the other 7 locations.
All 17 computers connect correctly to the Apple iChat test sites: appleU3test01 and appleU3test03 at very good speeds. Oh speaking of speeds, when I first thought maybe it was a connection speed problem, I checked each location by downloading a file off the ISP’s server to check actual speeds, no connection is slower than 75 KB/s, most are plus 150 KB/s downloading the file. I tried 5 different DSL speed websites such as DSLReports.com and they are so inaccurate for testing speeds, they’re not worth using. I would get variations of speeds sometimes 400 to 500 Kbps difference between web services from the same computer at basically the same time.
To recap, my office G5 can only chat with one computer of the 17, the iBook at the Verizon residential setup. The PowerBook from the residential setup can chat back to its home connection to the iBook from my office only. None of the other computers can chat with each other from one location to the other. All the computers (except my G5 and the one iBook) can only chat with the other computer that is located on the same router.
I have concentrated on trying to get my office and the DCO connected. I have tried everything. That’s why after talking with Apple about this, the tech said to post this. Not many people will have so many computers simultaneously to work with. He even said I tried everything.
The one thing I haven’t tried is removing the Linksys router from both ends of a connection and just go through the Westell Modem. There is too much involved changing over the 2 offices or the other locations with all the computers at each location. I can’t afford to experiment that way with working business situations. These are not home environments.
I’m still not sure if the problem is an Apple thing with the latest updates or a router problem because the firmware updates have installed a lot of security stuff. I never had to even consider Port Forwarding or anything. iChat AV with the Linksys routers in their default settings just worked.
One odd thing I noticed while I did all this testing, if you have 2 computers at the same location that both have the same apple test site in the buddy list (example: appleU3test01) when one connects to the test site, the other computer lists the buddy as in use, and the second computer can not connect to it. As soon as the first computer disconnects, it becomes available to the second computer. You would think the test site can handle multiple people at the same time. In addition, each computer can connect to a different test site at the same time over the same router. I don’t know what it means, I just found it interesting.
    Thanks for listening,
    Jim

EZ Jim & Ralph, I appreciate your suggestions.
EZ - I have not had time to view entirely your website on ichat. It looks pretty complete. Too busy. Equipment conflicts I don't believe I have any. There is nothing on any of the computers except the iSight camera. No other external or internal equipment added. Very little software other than Microsoft Office 2004 and a cople of other things. They are not loaded with stuff, pretty basic.
Also each little network location works fine, the only thing I'm having trouble with is Video Chat. They all text chat to each other just fine, including the Windows machines (some locations have windows xp machines only).
Ralph - first - each Day Care location is in a different building around our community and each has a DSL line with it's own static IP from the internet service provider. Each location has one Westell Modem/Router 2200 that has been made into a modem, setting it up as a bridge as my service provider requested. And each location has a Linsys Router with the Static IP to the ISP. Each computer has it's own AIM address.
On the Modem I changed the IP address so it wasn't the same as the Linksys Router.
I want to say, I think like you that it's the modem. I got that feeling from your last post.
I have checked out my G5 and I can Video Chat to a lot of people (settings below). I restored it back to the way it was originally set up when I could video chat with the Day Care Center Office (DCCO). I can chat with my son (he has similar Linksys WRT54G Router, the version I still don't have, and an iSight camera), my parents (they have a cable modem, and an old Linksys A&G Router, iSight), my neighbor (I lent him one of my iSights, he has Verizon Fiber Optic and a Apple Extreme Base Station). All video chatted fine.
My Linksys is now set to defaults. I restored everything back. This is how it was prior to all the testing (port forwarding, etc.)
Security: Firewall protection is enabled. Block Anonymous Internet Requests, Filter Multicast, Filter IDENT (Port 113) are all checked and on. Filter Internet NAT redirection is not checked.
    Administration: UPnP is Enabled.
Applications & Gaming: No Port Forwarding, No Port Triggering, No DMZ, No QoS.
The one thing different in all this is the Modem. I am using a discontinued Westel Wirespeed model; A90-210015-04.
My son is using the same type Router (different version) but a different Westell modem (I don't know which yet) He has Version DSL. The Router is set to defaults like mine is now and we conference fine.
The DCCO who I use to video chat with but can not now, has had the Modem and the Router changed. They had an old Linksys A&G router and an old discontinued Westel Wirespeed model similar to mine (the model I don't know yet). Now they have a Linksys WRT54G ver. 2 and a Westell 2200 Modem/Router (set up as a modem only).
So I'm going to work on the Modem theory first at the DCCO. I'm going to try to put the old modem back and see if it works. I can only do this on Fridays when only one person is in the office. I can't shut them down to test this. So I'll get back to you after Friday.
Thanks again for your good and helpful suggestions.
    Jim
Gee, I wish they would have left the spell checker in this forum.

  • Need Help...Do I have The mother of all itunes software problems???

I am in desperate need of help. I have fried three new ipod touches in two days. I Purchased a new 32GB 2d Gen ipod touch on Mon. 11/24. Worked okay till Friday 11/28. When I tried to sync with new additions, a warning came up “the ipod could not be updated, an unknown error occurred (9)” That was followed by a windows vista windows warning “USB device not recognized”
When I disconnected the touch I found that it could not be started. Tried a forced restore pressing the sleep switch and the home button together. That did not work.
Brought the touch to my apple store genius bar on Saturday and they too couldn’t get it to work. They switched out the ipod with a new one. Brought the new one home connected it and it received the new ipod touch software download okay. But when it tried to sync the same problem repeated…the two pop up warnings as before and a second dead ipod!
I then synced my ipod classic with no problems, so it appears the itunes software is okay. I’ve scheduled another appointment with the local apple store genius bar again.
When I took the new fried touch back to the Apple genius bar, it was switched out again. It was activated (by the initial step ipod touch software download on their computer.
I brought my laptop with me so we could test the syncing. The syncing proceeded initially for several minutes, and then the dreaded pop up warnings appeared
“the ipod could not be updated, an unknown error occurred (9)” That was followed by a windows vista warning “USB device not recognized”
The new replacement ipod touch was also fried.
The tech gave me yet another new ipod touch. He had never encountered such a problem and advised me delete and reinstall itunes and call the APL CARE 800 support number and go over the problem with one of their techs who have a broad range of experience in dealing with possible PC related issues.
As my other ipod has no problem syncing from the same laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520 using Vista) I am wondering if the problem might be a corrupted Itunes software problem that affects only the touch and not the ipod classics.
Has anyone heard of a bad itunes software related problem? I googled this and could find no info. Thanks for your help!

If you click View, Show Sidebar you will see the other libraries under Shared in the left hand column. Click on the Library you want and you can expand it to select Music, Movies etc. Select whatever items you want and click import if you want to move them to your Library.
You will have to have all computers authorised with the relevant Apple ID's
    Store  >  Authorise this computer...
This is separate from the Home Sharing username and password and is to allow playing of DRM Movies, TV shows etc from the other computer.
If both Computers use the same apple id this step is not required.

  • The Mother of All G4 Digital Audio Project?

Alright, my apologies right from the get-go: I'm new to this user-friendly and intuitive world of Macs. So if this post is long-winded and excessive, please excuse my bad manners and blame it on living in the world of PCs and M$ for far too long.
To start, the one thing I've found that is consistent no matter what computing world I've explored is the cost of upgrading... but first, let me explain a couple of things.
For one -- I'm finished with my PC. I'm fairly computer saavy, and have never bought a pre-built system in my life. My first computer I built in the 8th grade from spare parts and a Pentium 90 chip. Although I've enjoyed my time playing around and working with PCs in the past, I've recently become a father (and my wife is now at home 24/7). Suffice it to say I don't have much time to troubleshoot my PC as often as I use to, and with my wife using the computer more and more, I really would like to be able to offer her something intuitive and easy to use (unfortunately, this usually isn't a common description of anything related to the world of M$ and PCs).
Anyways, her entire extended family has been Mac based for awhile now, and I've grown more and more desirous of owning a Mac at home. Well, about 4 months ago I was given an old G4 Digital Audio for free. This gift, coupled with my increasing frustration with the PC, has lead me to contemplate ditching the PC (selling it off), and trying to fully pimp out the G4 to its maximum capacity. FOR CHEAP.
I realize that a Mac Mini would be pretty cheap and cost effective, or perhaps just selling the G4 and putting that money towards something else (like a Mac laptop) might make more sense... but I'm limited on a couple of fronts.
    1) There is the issue of some money having already been invested into this G4.
    2) I need to keep costs down, while also retaining the ability to expand (my PC currently has 3 HDDs at a total capacity of 800gb)... and it just doesn't seem feasible with a Mac Mini.
    3) I already have the G4 -- and in my wife's eyes, expanding this rig is cheaper than buying a brand new Mac (this point is clearly debatable).
    4) We really just need a solid system at home, easy for her to use, while having enough muscle for me to use the Adobe/Macromedia/Final Cut software packages.
So... I'd like to start pushing this G4 to its limits performance wise, while not breaking the bank unnecessarily. I've looked into upgrading the logic board and CPU, maxing out the system memory, purchasing a SATA controller board and new HDDs, and finally springing for a new video card. My question is this:
Can anyone shed some light on upgrade options that would suit my needs, without giving my wife reason to leave me?! For example, when looking to upgrade the G4 to a wireless system, I opted to purchase a Belkin Wireless G (F5D7000) instead of a official Airport card. It works flawlessly, is G compatible, and was only $25. Are there similar options when looking at SATA controller cards (the Sonnet cards are really pricey)? PC133 memory -- should I buy new or look for sticks in older PCs? Buy a pc video card and tweak it to work in a Mac, etc? Should I buy a single cpu upgrade, or spring for the pricey duals (is the performance benefit in OSX and the various design software packages worth it? - I've seen varied reports on this)? 1.6ghz vs. dual 1.4ghz??
Any help in this endeavor to build the Mother of All G4 Digital Audios would be wonderful. I know this post is lengthy, but I needed to vent some frustrations, and ask for a helping hand in this transition from PC to Mac! Thanks to all who've read this beast of a post -- and if anyone has anything to contribute (either suggestions or directions to some relatively cheap upgrades - new or used), it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks again!

  • Found the Solution to All of Aperture Problems! Easy Fix.

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]
After much tinkering with Aperture 1.0, 1.0.1, and 1.1, I've found the solution for all the problems that Apple is having with Aperture:
They should simply acquire Capture One Pro and use that as the foundation for the RAW conversions in Aperture.

    Hello,
in my opinion Aperture 1.1 is a killer application for editing files. The support for systems with two displays is the best I have worked with. But there are many fields to improve.
    - Quicker, easier and reliable IPTC keywording like iView Media Pro offers.
    - Still needed: better conversion of RAW files. Capture one Pro´s Color tools are very precise. When you are shooting portraits stay with C1. I have to open nearly every image converted with aperture within Photoshop. This is barely needed with C1Pro.
    - The HUD experience is still weak I think. Tweaking an image exactly is painful because the sliders are too small and sometimes a little move of a slider meens a lot of change inside the image.
    - Generated Webpages are full of coding errors. Weird thing: the templates are correct.
    - Versions of images should be marked more clearly. Please show me names or Pop-Up notes or something.
    - Having a closed vault looks good and sounds cool. But for now my vault holds 36 GB. This will grow quickly. I don´t feel good about it. I could use several vaults. For every month, every year. But am I able to search in all of them at the same time? Does Spotlight searches inside Aperture libraries? I dont think so. iView does. So I use iView to keep an eye on my aperture lib. That sound like a joke...
But I like Aperture a lot. It is a revolution. When I work with images I usually have 2 to 6 versions on my harddrive. Plus backups. One original. One for print, one for the web, one for the client and so on. This is all gone with Aperture. And that´s great. But a revolution is not an easy thing. Many things are to improve. And they have to be improved without loosing this Aperture thing.
My conclusion for now: Aperture is a workhorse. It helps a lot to edit images and to distribute them. It helps to keep images organized.
It is not a digital archival system nor a high precision raw converter. When you are shooting lots of images during events - use Aperture. When you are shooting high quality productions use anything what makes sense to you. Aperture is a version number 1.1 We have to be patient until the revolution evolves.

  • NForce Killing RAM? The Mother of all Crashes

Last week the problems started.  My PC just shut down mid-session with a stange and very fast shut down.  Trying to reboot just got me a superfast video beep code and blank screen. Beeep, beep, beep.  Only in milliseconds. The D-Bracket showed, Early Chipset Initialization.
I started dinkin around with my two RAM sticks (Crucial PC2100 128MB)  Finally, after shifting things around a bit, I figured out that one stick was bad. The PC would boot with the other stick in Slot 1, but no boot at all as long as the 'bad' stick was in any slot.  OK, I figured, bad RAM stick, I'll just run on one while I RMA the other and be done with it.
NOT SO FAST, Mon frere. Within about 3 three days, my PC won't boot at all.  This time it's Early Chipset Initialization again, only this time its accompanied by an eerie beep code that shouldn't exist.  Award (Phoenix) says the only beep code they have is the video: Beeeep, beep, beep.   MY beep code is a long beep, within a second on pushing the ON button, and a series of long beeps at about 3 second intervals.
So I'm thinking, no way.  One bad RAM stick I can see.  But not two within three days of each other.  And especially not two CRUCIAL RAM sticks. But what am I to do?
I swapped out the PS, same probem.
I removed every PCI card in the system, same problem.
I disconnected every drive except HDD, same problem.
I switched and re-switched my two RAM sticks in every possible configuration: nada.
    I reset the BIOS jumper.
I took the battery out for 8 hours.
I even replaced the CPU!  Beeeeep....(3sec).....Beeeeep....(3sec).....Beeeeep and Early Chipset Initialization on the LED's.
In desperation I RMA'ed both RAM sticks today.  And the clock is ticking...... my brain is telling me that it CAN'T be two sticks of RAM going bad within three days of each other, my motherboard must be possessed...
So there you have it folks.  The worst nForce crash of all time, and nowhere to turn except faithful NewEgg and an RMA of BOTH RAM sticks.  But can this be???  nForce killing RAM?  BTW, my settings were 133, 266, 66

It's possible that the problem wasn't related to your RAM at all, and it's unfortunate you RMA'd them both back.  I once witnessed the Early Chipset Initialization error, as a result of increasing my FSB too far.
It could be fixed by correctly clearing the CMOS, which is actually one of the hardest things to get right with this motherboard.  I've tried so many different ways, I can't quite recall the exact procedure, but I believe it went something like this:
    1.  Make sure power supply is switched off, power cord unplugged, AGP card removed, and monitor cable plugged into onboard video.
    2.  Move CMOS jumper to clear position, then remove battery, for say, I don't know, at least an hour.
    3.  While waiting, move the FSB jumper to safe mode at 100MHz.
    4.  Place battery back in after the hour, with the CMOS jumper still on clear, wait a few minutes, then put the jumper back to the Run position.
You should now be able to plug the power cord back in, switch on the power supply, and boot with the onboard video.  If this is the case, you can shutdown and move the FSB jumper back to User Mode, or 133MHz.
This procedure may not be the only way to clear the CMOS effectively, but this motherboard is sensitive, and it must be done right.  I'm pretty sure these steps will work, but it has been a while since I've had to clear my own CMOS so I can't confirm this.
Let us know when you get your RAM back, then we can see what the problem really is.

  • Is this a new variant of the 'grey screen, won't boot' problem?

    Hello all.  My second hand Powerbook G4 starts, the bitten apple comes up, then there is no further boot up action.  The situation leading to this was as follows;
    - firstly, starting but going to a blank/grey screen and staying there.  The new variant alluded to, which I have not been able to find referred to, was that at this stage, one could for a while, actually type letters (coming out in white).  After a while this stops.
    - researching this problem here I followed the advice in the Grey Screen article - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
one on resetting the PMU - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431#faq11
and on using Target Disk Mode - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
None of this helped in the slightest with these symptons.
Because I was away on holiday at the time I did not have access to system disks, or actually using Target Disk Mode.  On returning I used TDM to successfully connect to the PB, and it became evident that there is a drive problem.  I had taken quite a few edited videos with me and it was possible to copy some off, but not others.  Data that refused to copy always led to having to restart the machine because the 'copy' mode would refuse to cancel.  I also reinstalled the OS, and using another PB used TDM to allow Diskwarrior and Disk Utility to work on the poorly machine.  Both were able to do some work, but not complete all their tasks.  The SMART, so called, diagnostics always came up fine.
Now if I turn it on the grey screen stage is not reached, the apple symbol comes up and stays there, with no spinning wheels.
So, is there anything else I can do?
Is the grey screen with some typing possible relevant or interesting in any way?
    Thanks!
    Stephen

    Hello,
It's possible to have two Mac OS X's installed on one drive.
    Have you tried this:
    Restart whilst holding down Command-S
The screen should turn black and load some text
    At the prompt type
    fsck -fy and press Return
Hopefully some repairs will be performed.
    At the prompt type
    reboot and press Return
If that doesn't provide any help then try starting in safe  mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Once in safe mode, you can set the startup disk and reboot.
If that don't help, then all I can suggest is a clean install of the OS.
Using a Mac OS X install disk either retail or for a PowerBook G4, boot and upon selecting the destination drive, select option, then erase and reinstall.
A fresh install should resolve this problem as a last resort.
Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

  • Iaik.security.ssl.SSLCertificateException - the mother of all errors

    Hi,
    We're experiencing this error:
Error occurred while connecting to the FTP server "whatever:whichever": iaik.security.ssl.SSLCertificateException: Peer certificate rejected by ChainVerifier
when connecting to the FTPS server.
What was done by the teams:
    1) Every single certification was checked, there is pretty much no way this is a certificate problem
    2) Nothing was changed in the systems, this is an overnight error than kept persisting
    3) We restarted both involved servers, this keeps on bugging us
    4) No relevant traces are in SMICM, ST11, ST22, SM21, anywhere
    5) NOTHING was changed on any of the two servers.
    6) In addition, also the development PI server tries to connect to the same FTPS server and the same error appears.
This is an overnight problem that just didn't disappear whatever we did.
From my experience with this precise error which I can say it is now of more than a year is that it kept popping up in our system and it was triggered from causes as vast as some FTPs processes hanging on the FTPS server requiring restart, to filling the space on the server, not updated DNS cache on the PI server, you name it.
I'm really amazed the amount of times this error pops up in the CC monitor and the cause is everything else BUT a certification issue.
Do you have any idea worth sharing on why this might happen out of the blue?
    Best regards,
    George

    Hi George,
I have a similar issue here and have tried out all the possible options.
    1) Imported certificate into Trusted CA's from a server where the connectivity is working fine.
    2)Restarted the Java stack.
You Mentioned about FTPS server. Can you please confirm where else do  we need to import the certificate?

  • Music app and the mother of all oversights in my opinion...

    (iPhone 4S 32GB iOS 5.1)
I've highlighted the questions as i've ranted on...
This is an odd one regarding the music app. I've been using itunes match now for a little while. Album artwork is still buggy; it appears that the artwork is re-downloading every time i launch the app resulting in no artwork everytime an album is played until it's reloaded. This to me as a music lover is very annoying as i like all my musical ducks pointing the same way. So my method of getting around this was to turn off Match all together and go back to the ol' classic tried and tested manual music management. All music removed and started fresh. I load up my manually selected songs and albums, All is well. Except cover flow. For some reason now even with itunes match turned off; Cover Flow shows me a bunch of completely random albums that aren't even on the iphone yet there is no sign of them on the regular view what-so-ever. Completely unsearchable.
Anyone have any ideas on this / have the same issue?
I've taken all the usual steps, restoring the phone etc.
Next and finally the biggest annoyance with the best phone on the market.
I use my phone on the go 99% of the time. I use the earphones with the mic. For some reason during a call I can hear my own voice in my ears. This can be tested by making a call to 1-800 APPLE and blowing into the mic. There SHOULDN"T be any noise. The issue being is that i can hear a mouse pass wind on the other side of the street but the person on the other end is in the mix somewhere. When i used to have the 3gs this problem didn't exist... So i gathered must be the noise cancellation mic. Nope. Making a call with the Skype app the problem goes away. it's like being in a sound booth with just the person i'm on a call with nice and clear in my ears. So the hardware is sound. I took it the the Apple store in SOHO and spoke with a genius about it. We tried 3 iphones, 4 sets of earphones even his own personal iphone... Same problem persists. He had to concede that he had no idea why it was happening and said he now was going to be bothered by it!
Does anyone have a work around or solution?
I've even bought non Apple headphones to see if they work but to no avail. I don't need to hear myself and my surroundings Apple Devs... please fix it!!

    - Apple - Windows hardware? - does it really matter?
    Either.
    - Which software? - many have recommended iTunes, is it really the best?
iTunes is most definitely not the best ripping tool. It has no flexibility in file naming, and does not have as good error correction as Exact Audio Copy or Audiograbber.
    - Ripping settings? - audio file format???? - hard disk space needed?
This is where it gets a little tricky. Given what you are trying to, an uncompressed audio format like WAV or AIFF would fit the best, and AIFF is probably the better choice since it allows tagging of the files. Figure 10 MB per minute of music, or about 500 MB per CD that you rip. For 800 CDs, allow at least a half TB.
A compressed lossless format would be about half the size, but unfortunately iTunes does not support the leading uncompressed lossless format (FLAC), and the proprietary one that iTunes does support (Apple Lossless) has very little support outside of Apple products. So that is too much of a gamble given your requirement about "use with any player/software in the near future."
That is my opinion! Given that you have pretty strict requirements, and that you only want to do this once, do a little more research before you decide...

  • The mother of all blinking folder/question mark posts.

So here's another question mark/blinking folder post, only I've narrowed things down quite a bit. Let's start from the top.
Powermac G4 quicksilver won't boot, and will only show the infamous blinking folder icon.
    -unplugged keyboard and mouse
    -unplugged SCSI interface
    -unplugged CD drive
    -tested memory, all ok
    -changed slot RAM uses
    -booted with X held down
    -booted with C held down
    -booted with SHIFT held down
-booted with Option held down (brought up screen with two buttons, but no bootable devices)
    -Cleared PRAM
    -Cleared NVRAM
    -Replaced battery
All of the usual tasks and no results. Dead drive, right? Nope. It won't boot through the HD, or any normally bootable CDs, but when I access Open Firmware (Control+Z), I'm able to view all of the HD's contents (dir hd:\) and all of the contents from whatever CD I put in there (dir cd:\). As it can read from both, but will boot from neither, I'm now thinking it has something to do with the main board.
Has anyone else exhausted the blinking folder issue to the point I have, and still found results somehow? I'll be hooking it up to another mac via firewire tomorrow, but the unbootable CD makes me think that's not the solution. Any ideas on where to go from here? It's way out of warranty by the way.
Thanks in advance for your time everyone!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Next step, download a copy of the Apple Hardware test, and burn it to CD. I know, your QS isn't cooperating, so I hope you have access to another Mac.
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html
Hopefully the machine will run the AHT fine, and you can run a hardware test. I'm hoping not, but could be the ATA controller on the MOBO.
BTW- you didn't mention booting into single user and running fsck. See what that results in. Startup holding command+s. After the prompt type +/sbin/fsck -fy+ (that is a space between fsck and -fy). Press Return, and see what happens:

  • You have popunders for Firefox 4 and I can't block them. I won't use the browser at all until this problem is fixed. leland.dobbs@ucsf.edu

I have all popups blocked, but can't prevent the Firefox 4 informational one, which is very annoying. See above. I need a solution to this or I won't use Firefox anymore.

Is it the "you just upgraded" page appearing in a new window? That is not supposed to appear after the first time. This article can help with troubleshooting the problem: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20has%20just%20updated%20tab%20shows%20each%20time%20you%20start%20Firefox Firefox has just updated tab shows each time you start Firefox | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help].
If it is some other page, you may have malware or a very poorly behaved add-on. Can you post the URL of the pop-under?

  • Similar to other, installed the new update, all kinds of problems.

Did the uninstall, reinstall multiple times.  Itunes now freezes, locks up my computer and I have to cold boot to shut my PC down.  Now what?

    Hi willibphx,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you did not already, I recommend completely removing and reinstalling iTunes and all of its related components using these steps:
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
You can find the article with these steps and more information here:

  • Probably the mother of all stupid display questions...

I just bought a Gateway 22" widescreen for my PowerMac. Max resolution is 1680 by 1050 which is the default the Mac set it to (DVI connection btw). I was messing around playing UT2004 with this new display. My question is this...would the display or increase in the resolution somehow AFFECT actual gameplay? Specifically I noticed that once in a while, my character will stop moving forward, I have to let off on the key and press it down again to get my character moving again. I only noticed this AFTER upgrading my display, I used to have a Samsung 17" LCD display. BTW, my keyboard is a MIcrosoft Wireless Mac desktop. Like I said, didn't have problems until the display was upgraded. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
Cliff Notes: upgraded display to 22" Widescreen, Graphics cart is a Radeon X800 XT, try to play UT2004, character stops moving forward intermittently. Didn't have problem before...any relation? Thanks.

There should only be issues if you have also increased the resolution in the game itself (because the graphics chip has to work harder). Are you able to check (or lower) the resolution within the game?

  • The Mother of all Easy Questions...I hope!

I just got Logic Studio recently giving me very little time to learn how to use it before needing to create accompaniments for a concert that's coming up. Having only ever used Garage Band (starting simple) in the past I am trying to figure out how to get my accomp's onto a CD. W/Garage Band you just export things to iTunes and burn them. Piece o-cake Is it that simple with Logic or do I have to convert Midi files to Audio files and do I have to use Wave Burner? Bottom line...My concert is Monday...I'm looking for either a reference to where I can find this info in the manuals (I've gone through the contents several times and can't find a heading that sounds pertinent to my needs)...or could someone please just tell me how to do it.
    In a crunch....

In Logic, exporting files is called "bouncing." That is located under the file menu. In the bounce window there is an option to automatically load the file into iTunes once it is finished bouncing. Make sure that box is clicked, and there you go, just like garageband.
And no, you don't need to convert MIDI files. Logic includes all active, unmuted tracks as a part of your audio mixdown.

  • The mother of all cd rippings - which program and settings to use?

    Hi,
having collected more than 800 cd's within the family over the years we would like to rip them once-and-for-all on a dedicated computer. Since it's a lot of work it would be nice to get it right the first time...
    - Apple - Windows hardware? - does it really matter?
    - Which software? - many have recommended iTunes, is it really the best?
    - Ripping settings? - audio file format???? - hard disk space needed?
The objective is to make one great database of our cd's ripped in the best possible quality and without any unnessesary clutter (playlists etc. personal data) - only the music and basic cd data and cover picture. This would then be the base and every time one of us would like to use any of the music he/she would first copy the needed files or folders to his/hers own computer and only then make playlists etc. Also all file conversions (for iPAD, mobile phone etc.)would only be done outside of the base collection.
The resulting database should be as high-quality, barebone and easy to use with any player/software in the near future as possible.
    TIA!
