The name of my hard drive has changed on strange letters or some words chosen by random.

I have iMac (2011) with OS X Lion 10.7.4, and I noticed that name of my hard drive has been changing on strange letters or some words chosen by random. It's quite strange. I have other apple computers and I have never experienced such things. I can't find any logical explanation of this "activity". Sometimes it happens after sleeping mode, sometimes there is no activity from my side or from OS. How to fix it? What should I do?
Update: I don't have any cats or other animals that can walk on my keyboard. This is definitely not because of "accidentally pressed an icon of my HD and then pressed some keys" issue.

  • How do I change the name of my hard drive which the photos and libraries are located on without having to relink and recreate folders for photos?

When I have tried to change the name of my hard drive which my photos and catalog are stored on, when I try and access the new catalog in the new destination yet still same physical hard drive it unlinks all the photos and the folder structure.
Any way to keep the photos or at least the year folders so as to more easily relink?

In the Library module, in the Folders tab on the left, do a right-click "show parent" until you can see the root of the drive.
From there, if you cannot rename the drive from there, then rename it in the OS finder/explorer. Then you just need to reconnect that one root directory or drive entry and Lightroom will do all the work for you.

When I try to install ios lion the installer says my hard drive has SMART errors and that I need to buy a new Hard Drive, but my computer witch has snowleprd and runs just fine.

SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.

  • File On Hard Drive has changed...

...since last saved, are you sure you want to save?
This is an error message I keep getting while working in Photoshop and hitting command save (done from memory so probably not 100% accurate). It only happens when saving to a specific external hard drive and intermittently, not all the time. This happens maybe 10% of the time and for different files, so it isn't a specific file.
Anyone have any idea why a file would be changed on the hard drive while I'm working on it in Photoshop?
This is not my scratch disk but I do have Time Machine backing it up. I've run Disk Warrior to repair the directory with no change.
I have recently had 2 Photoshop files on this drive go bad, Photoshop saying it reached an unexpected end of file.
So I'm assuming the drive itself is having some problems (only a year old). My next move is to wipe the drive and reformat it and zero it out, then copying all my files back (after cloning the drive of course). I'm just checking in here to see if this might be a specific problem that someone knows how to fix before going to all that trouble.

I also changed my user name.Dont know if this has had anything to do with whats happend.
ive tried changing it back but it wont change back to the new one (which is the original)

  • How do you lock the name of a hard drive?

I have looked quite a bit through the forums and cannot find an exact answer concerning locking the HD name not the entire drive, just its name. Over the years I have several times, I quess parked the cursor over the name of the hard drive and some how highlighted it and started entering text only to find that I have been typing in the drivename box. Not always a problem, when you catch it right away. I'v come back and found my Macintosh HD named -T, Q or whatever key strokes might have been entered. I have lost drive partitions because I couldn't remember the name I had given it.
all models   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   earlier Mac OS systems as well
all models   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   earlier Mac OS systems as well

The same way you change it on the internal drive; click on the name and wait a second or two for the field to drop into editing mode, then just type the new name. Or Get Info on the file/folder and change the name there.
    Regards.

  • HT1364 I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanen

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?

  • HDD Invalid Sibling error, one hard drive has renamed itself with another harddrives name and now gives invalid Sibling error, what can i do?

    Hi
So I have a few dozen hard drives for archiving and two of them have gone insane, The drives are named B1A and B6A. B1A is mounting and can be accessed however the desktop icon shows up as a faded yellow instead of the regular color and doesnt show in the finder sidebar.
B6A is showing its partition as B1A (this is wrong) and not mounting at all. when repair is run it gives an invalid sibling error.
What can i do, i've never heard about something like this.
These two hard drives were used recently and worked fine could OSX somehow have mixed up HDD partition names on different drives
Also these are mounted via USB, OSX 10.7.5

    Thank you Jim and Apple2Freak,
I appreciate your comments. I am now suggesting to my friend to buy a legal OS and if that is the case I am suggesting to him to move to OSX instead of OS9. Luckily he let me know there wasn't much data on that drive that he needed to save. I am still trying to determine if I could still use this hard drive with the keylength errors if I erase it or if the hard drive has permanent damage. I am hoping that I could install OSX on it and erase the hard drive to start again.
This imac (slot loading version) can support up to OS 10.3.9 however I might consider Xpostfacto to try to run 10.4. But then I would need to buy 10.3.9 as well as 10.4 and that would double my OS cost. I think I might just look for OS 10.3.9 only. Its not worth it for me to buy two OSes for it.
Jim, your post was very interesting because it also pointed out that it could be an issue of bad RAM. A few months ago we installed some new second-hand RAM and I wonder if that is the cause of all these problems. I will have to check that first.
    Thanks again!

One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Hi,I have recently replaced by hard drive with a ssd. My old hard drive has all my iTunes stuff.i would like to install only iTunes programme on the ssd with all the content on the old hard drive. How do I do it?

    Install iTunes.
Once install, hold SHIFT and launch iTunes.
When prompted, point iTunes to the correct location for the iTunesLibrary.itl file which should be in the iTunes folder under <user>/Music on the old drive.

tried on a different mac. The same problem exists.
If that is the case, its extremely unlikely you have a bad USB cable on the seagate, rather as I mentioned earlier a bad SATA bridge card.
If the Seagate 1TB USB external wont open on either Mac and youve verified same (try a diff. USB cable if you have one however this is nearly never the case),....then to get the data off that HD (unless it is dead which is also extremely unlikely),......then you would need to extract the HD from its case and insert same into either a HD dock or USB HD enclosure.
8 out of 10  seemingly dead inopperable 1-3+ year old external HD are perfectly fine, rather the cheap 50 cent SATA bridge card fries and dies (alas)
reply back if you need help in extracting same.

You may have a hard drive problem. When I installed Lion, the installer told me that it couldn't complete because the hard drive was failing (or broken, the exact words escape me). Since the HD had been functioning just fine, I took it to the Genius Bar, and found out that yes, the hard drive was slowly dying (bad sectors). I couldn't reboot into Snow Leopard, the installer wouldn't let me and then the drive just wouldn't work at all.
I had to replace my drive and restore from Time Machine. Thankfully, I had Time Machine, and had just done a backup 5 minutes before the crash.
    Best of luck.

This question is outside my experience and I assume that it has nothing to do with the subject of this forum, creating podcasts. May I suggest you ask it in the OSX Server forum if that seems to be appropriate (even if it is to do with Podcast Producer I still have to refer you there).
