The noise or sound on start up?

Hi i have the G5 when you push the power button to turn the system on it makes a start up sound. I have an external hard drive connected via usb and a tablet.
Sometimes the mac will start up after the first sound and other times it will make the same noise 3 or 4 times before it starts up. Is this normal? I thought it was the tablet as the blue indicator light, when it makes 3 or 4 sounds doesnt illuminate. If it does it boots after the first.
So, i unplugged the tablet and 1 noise and was booting up. Then it made 2 or 3 noises again hmm?
My question is. Is it because of external devices that it irregularly starts up or is it normal and nothing to be concerned about?
Thanks in advance.
Nick

Well, it is certainly unusual to be hearing them repeated unless you happen to be simultaneously holding the down the command option p r keys when you start up the machine! (this resets the PRAM).
One possibility may be a power cord that isn't fully pushed into place. Sometimes the little "collar" on the power cord where it attaches to the computer can stop it fitting properly.
Another may be a dying PRAM battery. If you have one of the earlier imac G5s these are very easy to replace (and the battery used is the very common CR2032 used in many caculators, kitchen scales, etc and available at any electrical parts shop, or probably even your local supermarket.) If it is an iMac with a built in "iSight" camera, though you should take it to a dealer for replacement.
The external devices are unlikely to be causing the problem in this case, but it would be worth disconnecting them and seeing what happens.
Cheers

    Has anyone had this problem?

in the future, buy this, this is what the Pros use:
for drops, accidents, spills, loss, or theft, purchase a TYPE of insurance called "inland marine insurance"
roughly $30 per year for a device(s) with 0 deductible, used same for over 20 years, same insurance the pros use on their portable devices.
very cheap, very useful insurance, most people dont know about same.

take it back asap.  If it wasn't doing it before they cleaned the fans, they may have accidentally done something that is causing this behavior.

  • How do I change the noise at start up?

I remember changing the noise my Mac makes when I turn it on when I first bought it, but I can no longer remember how to do so. Could someone please tell me where I can find the option.
    Thanks

    shauniemac,
Gulliver & Allan are absolutely correct.
The Startup Chime is part of the power on self test, and resides in the ROM.
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime.
It is not an audio file that can be changed to another sound.
The Startup Chime is also needed to run certain troubleshooting procedures, such as resetting the PRAM.
Here ae two more utilities that will allow you to manipulate the volume.
    Psst & Startup Chime Stopper.
You can also depress the Mute key went starting up.

Test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly."
    3. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    4. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    5. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    6. In some cases, the problem has been resolved by repairing permissions on the startup volume.
    7. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    8. Reinstall OS X.

Since you are covered by warranty, I would take it to your nearest Apple store immediately. There might be a problem with the RAM. And, you have 14 days to return the machine, so if it is not an easy fix, you might want to consider returning it for another machine.

I asked my friends on Facebook and one came up with the answer... I just had to flip the little "ring-silent switch" on the side of the iPhone to cut the "Pinging" sound!  There's probably another way but this works!

Yes, I know, but it works as always, there is nothing to make it better; cf Perian.
iStat Pro does not quite work "as always" with newer systems.
For one thing, it may report inaccurate temperatures (& possibly fan speeds), depending on the Mac model it is running on. (For instance, on my system, it tells me the ambient temperature is around 54° F in a room that is actually about 77°.)
The problem is basically that iStat Pro gets temperature & fan speed info by querying the SMC subsystem. Apple has apparently changed the query/response protocols or the SMC hardware itself, so this no longer works as the utility expects.
And Banjo is not as "safe" and digs too deep with core kexts.
Banjo is the new name for the same company that developed iStat Pro & the original & newer iStat Menus programs. My guess is that the latest version of iStat Menus is just as safe to use as the earlier ones.
However, I won't use it for the same reason I won't use MenuMeters: both rely on MenuCracker, a hack to work around Apple's restriction of menu extras to ones Apple develops & distributes as part of the OS itself. Developers are specifically told to use 'Status Items' for their menu bar add-ons, which offer some but not all of the same functionality as menu extras, & do not risk destabilizing the OS or compromising its security.

It sounds like a Ground loop... voltage leaking somewhere.

Now that you mentioned it, that might be the source of the problem. Something was definitely wrong with my graphics card before the incident happened. You mean that particular batch of graphics cards had some inherent issues, right? I went to the genius bar, and the 'genius' there, without trying to diagnose the problem properly, just adviced me to buy a new mbp! He said Apple will no longer try to fix or touch macs older than 5 yrs. Mine is 5.5 yrs old...

Probably is. They get dusty. Shut down your computer and clean it out with a vacuum (don't blow dust back inside).

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If neither helped, boot from your install disc, run Disk Utillity. The startup disk may need repairing.

  • Can the Noise Gate be adjusted in Audition CS5

    Hi All,
Can the noise gate be adjusted in Audition CS5
    Regards
    Matt

Ryclark is right that trial and error is needed.
However, to answer your specific question, for most noise gate applications, you really just want the fastest attack you can get (which will be the default of 1ms), otherwise you risk clipping the start of whatever sound is "opening" the gate.
Similarly, unless you want to add some compression as well, just leave the output gain at the default setting of zero.
The main thing in a gate is threshold--which is very dependent on your material.  Basically, you want to set this so the wanted audio makes it through the gate but everything else is muted.  You can get a rough idea of where you want this set by looking at your waveform...but after that you'll be best off tweaking it by ear.
    Hope this helps.
