The Official OS X Annoyance Thread: Slow Internet Performances

Hi!
It seems that there's a lot of people with poor internet performance out there. I'm surely not alone. And we already crawled every **** google page about it. I tried EVERY solution. The 4.2.2.1 trick, opendns, a lot of different stuff and nothing worked. Nothing!
But it seems that my case is the worst: I'm not limited to 500kb/s. I'm limited to something like 5kb/s!!!
I just have to boot on windows XP and I can fully use my connection. Every computer in the house is running fine so it is NOT the router. (The router is using openDNS as well).
So I would like to ask you people, to try to find a solution <Edited by Moderator>. Because it is a real pain the the *!
I have a Macbook (Early 2006). With the latest updates. So it should not be a problem... Please do something, it's been over a month since I began trying every tip that has been given to me on forums.
Thanks a lot for your help!
- Tom

Does the router have the very latest firmware? Many routers work well with Tiger and earlier versions of Leopard and PCs, but not with the latest versions of Leopard unless they have the latest firmware updates.

  • TC suddenly slowing Internet performance

I moved from Linksys to the TC after several bad experiences with Linksys, and now am having the same bad experience with the TC! It's been running for a few months with no problems, and then suddenly this week I started experiencing massive performance degradation of Internet speed. I've read through several older archived threads and this appears to be a pretty regular deal that Apple has not been able to resolve for years. And I DON'T believe that it's related to the wireless portion of the router.
I have a work router hard wired behind the TC, to which I have connected my work MAC, and an IP phone. I usually notice the slow down when my IP phone begins experiencing poor performance. This stuff is all hard wired. A power cycle of the TC fixes the issue every time, but it's gotten to the point where I'm having to power cycle the darn thing every day. It's ridiculous. This HAS to get fixed. This thing costs several times more than the Linksys, so I expect better than this.

i actually just bought a 1TB TC. I have it running as a wireless Backup drive, connected to my already existing WLAN, and when I started the 1st run of Time Machine, my entire network stopped. No network traffic at all, and the TC stopped backing up after 2GB
    ... i hope I didn't just blow $330 for nothing

  • Slow Internet Performance on Streaming Applications - G4 Quicksilver

This is a repost of a problem I was having before I spent a few months in the Middle East and having returned home I find I am sadly no further forward with. I would appreciate any help to fix iot as it drives me mad that I can not use my G4 to talk on Skype or access streamed radio shows.
I have a Quicksilver G4 upgraded witha Giga Designs Dual 1.33 GHz processor, clocked to run at 1.47 GHz. My Internet connection is 2Mb Broadband connected via an etrhernet cable through a Netgear DG834G router.
I get fast browsing and downloading using a web browser, but when I try and use any streaming applications such as Skype or the BBC radio player (using Real Plugin), audio quality is terrible as the internet radio connection speed drops off from a nominal 45kps to around 12kps. Skype is unusable as the connection is so slow that people spaek in slow motion. My Powerbook 1.5Ghz connected via airport to the same router has no trouble at all and I can speak on Skype quite happily and get good quality on the radio via Real Player.
Can anybody suggest why my Quicksilver G4 is so sluggish on these specific internet applications - I am already running the latest versions of the software involved and 10.4.6 Could it be anything to do with my ethernet connection - but if so why is web browsing OK?
    Thanks in advance

Overclock makes no difference. It can't be an ISP problem as my PowerBook exhibts no such problems to the same ISP using the same router (nor does my son's iMac G4). All my other computers access the internet via wireless Airport - This is the only one that uses a direct ethernet connection to the router, so I am slightly suspect of that - ethernet connection is set to automatic in the Network preferences.

  • Re: "Very Slow Internet On OSX 10.5.5"

    Hello all,
I am creating my own thread in response to ones like rogerjth's July 2008, the subject of which was "Slow Browsing with safari 3.1.2 - Any issues to watch out for?" and Roippeli's from Sep. 21, 2008, the subject of which was "Very Slow Internet On OSX 10.5.5 / Works Fine on XP. Since many people on the forum have been having the same problems and, like myself, have been unable to resolve them by the same methods that seem to have fixed the problem for the majority of people (hence the issue topic being marked "answered" because the topic was indeed answered, but only for the OP), I decided to start this thread again.
I have been having the same problems as Roippeli and rogerjth for over a week now, and despite having searched the forums exhaustively, I am unable to fix them. I have tried every suggestion, including all of those made by Klaus 1 (emptying cache, resetting Safari, deleting specified files from Home/Library/Preferences and "/"/Safari, adding DNS numbers, scanning for trojan viruses - of which there were none - creating an OpenDNS account and configuring both my router and my PB to utilize OpenDNS), which seem to have solved the problems for many. However, after a short period of subtle yet marked increases in speed, I am back to the same place that I was before taking these steps. Intermittent connection, slow speeds, the works. I'm now ready to smash the router. Help!

same problem here on a macpro. but only since today, i updated to 10.5.5 a week ago or so when it came out and had no problems until today. the moment i started my macpro internet connection was very slow (with safari, firefox & mail), but the airport network itself seems to be fine though (tried by copying files from a network disk).
everything else connected to the same network works fine (iphone, other macs without 10.5.5)
i posted in a german forum too and there are some others having the same problem.
the question is : why today ??? i didn't change anything serious lately.
i'm currently trying to download the combo update again and safari standalone but i get one timeout after the other.
also tried to repair rights, p-ram reset, safari reset - nothing helped.

  • Significantly slow internet

Setting up time capsule was fine, didnt take that long and not too many obstacles to face. I also bought the new n capable express that is extending my network as we speak. But the main issue I have is my internet speed, my linksys router which is bridged to the TC is getting much better speeds then the network that the TC is on. If I do speedtest.net my TC gets an average of 6 mbps. The linksys is consistently getting 15+ mbps. Whats the deal with that!! I thought that having the Airport express would help to give higher speeds to parts of the house that otherwise never got much coverage. If this is what is going to be expected from TC then I might as well return it and stick to the realiable linksys wrt54g.
p.s. as far as the specs of airport utility is concernced; TC is set to 802.11n [email protected] becuase 5ghz made connection speeds worse, its set to channel 2,WPA2 Personal
when i sit with my mbp right next to the TC i get 30+ mbps but its horrible in the spot that i use it the most. in the same spot linksys completely blows it out the water

Check your DNS settings. Compare them to your older router. This is usually the main reason you'll get slow internet surfing performance.
If you want to test it, temporarily set your DNS settings (on the TC) to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. These use the Domain Name servers from OpenDNS.Com which are free to the public. They'll bypass your ISP's DNS settings, but may be enough to determine if that is what the problem is. If you're using static IP addressing on your computer, check those settings as well.
I seriously doubt it's an issue with the TC, unless, on the remote chance you got a bad one. Most of the time it's the configuration.
Good luck, let us know what you find out!

  • Does itunes 10.1 resolve the slow internet issues of itunes 10?

    Hi guys,
when I installed iTunes 10 I experienced extremly slow internet connections and after looking through the forums, decided as some other users to revert back to iTunes 9. This did resolve my problems.
Now I note that iTunes has moved to 10.1 and I was wondering whether people who have installed it have any issues with their internet connection. I have an iMac 2.67 Quad - intel with OSX 10.6.5.
I would not want to go through all this again, I have been quite disappointed by this issue and the lack of support to it so I'd rather save the trouble and keep my opinion of Apple from any further damage !

i was just forced to install 10.1 b/c 8.21 (BEST itunes version ever - super fast, never crashed, etc) which worked flawlessly finally told me i had to upgrade b/c i could no longer see the store - it just stopped working. it's VERY painful to use 10.1 now, esp the store. this thread covers the same topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12743989#12743989
seems like it's on both windows and mac.

Take it somewhere that has better broadband. The best you can do sometimes is invest in new modem that works with your system instead of the rental etc in most cases.
    Do a Safe Boot.
Make sure your firewall is set properly. Don't use 3rd party. AV software can get in the way.
Make sure you are getting the service and a clean strong modem signal - slow is one thing but if it drops off and can't maintain a connection you have hardware issues, not software - and upgrade to a new OS doesn't tend to improve, it may even not work with older networking equipment once you do get it.
I agree and think electronic only goes too far. And when you do get it: burn the package and manually set it aside first before running the intaller! make a flash memory installer, put it on DVDs too.

  • I have very slow internet even though my provider says the speed is fast

I am experiencing very slow internet even though my provider says that my speed is fast.  The uploading of a page takes long to complete

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

  • Very Slow Internet Lion (This one is for the "Apple Network Team")

    hello,
    i'm joão from Portugal, Europe.
a couple of weekends ago i've updated three macs to Lion.
    2009 MacMini, 2007 White Macbook, 2010 iMac 21".
    problems? only with the iMac.
no connection drops but slow slow slow very slow internet. wired, speedtest marked 15Mbps download. wireless? 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps, very unstable.
with Snow Leopard everything was ok.
tried every solution from every site and finally got it working flawlessly.
tried clean install instead of update.
    tried new dns servers.
    tried disabling ipv6.
tried remove wifi interface then add it again.
    tried service order.
tried PRAM, NVRAM, SMC, you name it, reset.
    tried removing preferences folder.
tried different browsers -> same symptoms.
    tried disable/enable airport.
    tried 10.7.1, 10.7.2, combo, delta.
    tried router's firmware update.
tried putting the computer closer to the router.
tried resetting the router, factory defaults.
    tried changing router's channel.
    tried disabling router's firewall.
tried watch router's event log, nothing suspicious.
    tried disabling router's wep password.
tried pinging a site for a couple of minutes, 2% packet loss.
tried hundreds of pages and forums...
during this attempts, macmini and macbook showed very good wireless internet speed.
iMac? slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, like seeing gmail's loading screen for more than one minute...
    again and again speedtest 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 1Mbps, 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps.
discovered the pingtest utility in the same site and iMac's ping was grade C, grade F, grade D, with big values...mac mini and macbook were alwas grade B, with low pings (imagine 25ms on them vs. 138ms on the iMac).
i was fed up with the situation, every week tried and failed. iMac's owner was wanting to get his Lion money back and stick to Snow Leopard again. imagine recent Windows switchers thinking they went back to the same situations....
but then i found this website. and then realised macbook and macmini's wi-fi were both powered by a broadcom chipset. iMac's was powered by an Atheros chipset! did what the guy says on that site (replaced Lion's Atheros kernel driver by the one on Slow Leopard), and now everything is perfect, like on Snow Leopard. very good speed.
what a relief. thank you sir.
    hope it can help you.
hope it reachs apple's network developers...this is not good, you can't fail on something so simple and essential as decent wifi quality...

    humm...
i've clean installed one macbook (late 2008?) and one mac mini (early 2009) both with broadcom adapters and both of them were ok, after the install.
so, speedtest and pingtest are websites (speedtest.net and pingtest.net), both test your internet connection with the help of a 'local' server. it's useful, for instance, if you want see if two different computers connected to the same router have the same connection quality.
so if you can connect to some routers nicely and you have problems with your router, to me, it seems like you have some problems with the connection between your computer and the router.
an old router might bring you problems (there are some advices on the internet to change router's channel and so...), i would recommend to see if motorola has some sort of firmware update to your router. if you don't have complex router configurations, you might try to reset to factory defaults (search the manual). that, once, fixed a problem with a smc router and two macbooks (one, older, could connect easily, the other wouldn't connect to the router).
if that atheros driver trick, resolved your issue, that's strange
make sure broadcom isn't your ethernet adapter and not your wireless adapter
did you resetted your pram and smc? do you  have Mac OS 10.7.2?
i hope you can figure that out.

Hey folks, how you doing? My name is Chris, 26 from Glasgow. I was a very keen gamer at a young age, heavily into my Sega mega Drive and Super Nintendo, i then didnt play much until Sega Dreamcast where I became obsessed with the likes of Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, i then followed up with a Playstation 2 where I played Final Fantasy 10, Tomb Raider, Reisdent Evil, I also had a Nintendo Gamecube and liked the platformers like Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Sonic, Super Monkey Ball, I then drifted off gaming for some reason, mainly lifestyle was more interested in going out being a student etc. I have been hooked back in as I got a Playstation 3 for Christmas, very late I know 7 years oops oh well Im hoping to get a good 2/3 years off this as I have such a back catalouge to play with and PS4 probs wont get going for a year or so and I wont pay launch prices. I have an ecletic taste but I prefer action/adventure, rpgs, platformers a little kiddish I know but its a lot of fun, I prefer more problem solving games but do like instant fix racing games. My PS3 collection (games i got for xmas) is Uncharted 3 (my fave, completed it already but will go back to get Trophys, will be checking out the other 2, love a good story) Final Fantasy 13 i think? Only played an hour of that but might do some of that tonight. Sonic Generations which is what I would say I play when I dont want something too hard, Gran Turismo which is really fun but I know nothing about cars so I only find it semi interesting, Resident Evil 6 which I have played an hour or so off, its still to grip me, I was a huge fan of Code veronica on Dreamcast and Res 4 on Gamecube but this isnt as good for me...yet. And the Tomb Raider trilogy which I love, but I still prefer the original games by Core Design. So please add me folks as I have no online friends, i will be getting more into the online RPG thing in the near future, people have recommended Skyrim to me if you can think of any I would like please give me a shout. I consider myself to be a good gamer, competitive but perhaps a little rusty as i have been out the scene a while. get adding parsonageflat5 bye for now

You can get all the download links to software updates back many years by going to:

  • Anyone know when Mac will have the fix for the slow internet due the 10.8.2. upgrade?

I just uped to 10.8.2 on a Mac pro, and know the internet throughput has dropped from a Ping of 87, download 24.24 Mbps , upload 3.82 Mbps to a ping of 248, download .37 and up of .17.  I have plugged two other Macs (one at a time) into the same network cable as above and got the per 10.8.2 upgrade speeds. Seems that one must conclude that the slow internet issue must be due to the 10.8.2 upgrade. When will Mac have the fix for this?

  • A solution to slow internet on the iPhone 6?

I recently noticed an issue on Wi-Fi where my iPhone 6, on the 2.4 Ghz frequency, but not the 5 Ghz, web pages were slow to load or hung indefinitely. Sending iMessages was also slow, even if there were no attachments. From what I read, many are having similar issues on their iPhone 6’s.
I want to share something that worked for me to fix this issue: the web pages hanging made me think there might be something up with DNS server access, and I initially considered making them static on my iPhone 6 (I was using DHCP). However, as I have multiple devices connecting wirelessly, I instead decided to change my router (TP-Link TL-WDR3600) settings so that it would instead pass through to connected devices the actual IP addresses for the DNS servers (I use OpenDNS). That way I could keep each wireless device set with DHCP for DNS, yet have them using the actual IPs of both the primary and secondary DNS servers, rather than having just the single IP of my router and relying upon it to handle DNS requests.
I’m not sure if all router firmware has this capability, and I’m not sure the problem was with the router handing DNS requests, as none of my other devices were having this problem, and I wasn’t seeing it with my iPhone 6 on the 5 Ghz frequency, but regardless the slow internet on my iPhone 6 immediately went away and I haven’t seen it happen again since (knocking on wood).

    Hi silenced_one,
Please remember people reading your post only know as much as you detail in it.
ive read the posts offered here and tried the many workarounds
    What have you tried specifically?
but im still loading pages at less than dialup speed and im on 7mps dsl.
What browser are you loading pages with? Have you tried another browser? Is your DSL router configured in the way your ISP recommends (MTU, VPC settings etc)?
im using ethernet to avoid disconnecting problems but id prefer wireless with my setup if possible.
What do you mean here? Do you mean you are having disconnection problems when connecting to a wireless network? If so, what is happening and what error messages are you receiving?
