The old sleep issue

My iMac does not want to go to sleep by itself anymore. In the days of old one of the culprits was iPhoto. In my case, could it be Skype running? Or is it the USB camera (Logitech Ultra Vision)? Or does it have to do with the fact that there are other Macs on the network? Or is it the latest version of DiskWarrior (4.1)? what's new on the sleep issue?
Regards,
Jurgen

Stop! Not that easy. I plugged all peripherals in again, started uploading to Rapidshare....and went to bed. This morning, the fans were blurring, the screen was black...no sleep all night for the iMac. Turned out to be a kernel panic. I am presently testing the memory using memtest. After the first iteration, the memory was still deemed ok (I had previous memory failure but memtest discovered those within a few minutes). So, it must have been the peripherals...usb drives and/or webcam. The strange thing is: none of them were switched on.
I am at a loss....and my Apple Care expires in three weeks. Will have to monitor hardware and bring it in for a check if the panics continue.

  • The old "sleep using keyboard commands" not working issue is back again

All the way through Leopard the keyboard shortcut for "sleep" wasn't working.
Then in SL it started working again.
Now in 10.6.7 it isn't again.
    All constructive suggestions welcome.

I have exactly the same trouble that Tom has (or had?)
I get this in Console, endlessly repeated. I have the slim aluminium keyboard plugged into USB and the mouse is plugged into the USB on the keyboard. It does not make any difference if anything else is connected to the Mac or disconnected - hard drive, printer etc.

  • Lost file associations (Not the old version issue) Win 7 & CS5

Something corrupted my installation of CS5 a month or so ago after it had been working correctly and I lost all the image file associations. Photoshop worked fine but only if I directly opened files from within.  Also all the other image packages were missing from the file association list in the Windows 7 file associations tool, not just Photoshop.   Using the Windows tool to find the programmes dot exe file and create an association also locked up at the select the right package phase.
I have fixed this now and my reason for posting is that several previously suggested fixes in both the MS Windows fora and elsewhere on these Adobe forums were either very complicated requiring direct registry editing or didn't work.  It has taken me a while to find a work-around that worked, hence this post.
    1) Firstly - as is stated elesewhere the obvious answer of simply reinstalling Photoshop over the existing copy doesn't work!  Unfortunately it was a while before I found this out, with several time wasting retries of this as a fix attempt.
    2) Not saying this is guaranteed to work in every case but I ran a 3rd party free Registry Cleaner tool, this appears to have fixed the bug in the registry allowing the Windows 7 File Associations tool to work properly again.  Once that was fixed linking up each graphic type was simple.
Reason for posting is I wasted lots of time thinking the issue must have been a legacy from my earlier instal of a trial version of Master Suite or the older Photoshop 7 being replaced even though my CS5 edition had been working Ok for some time. because this is what is given as the usual cause.  However I think in my case it was after loading and then deleting other graphics software, possibly Real Player, which had grabbed the associations and corruped registry settings somehow at uninstall.  It appears registry cleaner restored the corruption and allowed the standard Win 7 tool to work again.
Hope this can help someone else.

First, let me say thanks to John for posting his experience here.  I think that Adobe does a poor job of managing file associations, given that we do hear of a lot of folks who see them get fouled up due to doing normal things like uninstalling earlier versions.
I'd like to ask, though:  Did you try using the Preferences - File Type Associations dialog in Bridge?

A comment on "registry cleaners" in general:
I am a career computer "geek", and yes, Curt's right:  Registry cleaners in general are a terrible idea.  There are a few that encompass some valuable functionality such as deletion of old files from TEMP folders, but that's something one can do on one's own as well.
It's simply impossible for the programmer of a piece of software to know what information can be safely deleted from YOUR file system or YOUR Windows registry, which is a database.
Nor is it necessary to "clean" a registry regularly, as some say, to keep a system working well.  That's hype, propagated by the registry cleaner makers.  I use a system every day that's on the same installation of Windows 7 that first went in at the end of 2009.  It's stable and fast as ever.  I've even done several hardware upgrades and restored the same OS setup using system image backups just to keep the same fully configured, perfectly working system.
Ever hear people claim they have to reinstall Windows every so often?  One of the reasons could well be that they've used a registry cleaner.

  • The old jmc issue

    Hello, all!
My apologies for bothering with this old issue, but does someone know if there are any plans to allow the SUPERB and only video playing solution for java to be usable? This means to allow to redistribute jmc.jar and native libraries?
    Thank you.

Well, the HTML renderer is called WebView right now, and the roadmap says that it is coming in the Early Access release. Additionally, a basic web browser will be coming out with Beta release. I don't know exactly when early access is coming out, but it would be at some point in this half of the year. In fact, an Oracle employee recently released an interesting blog, which would imply soon: http://www.adam-bien.com/roller/abien/entry/java_fx_2_0_the

  • The old "discoloration" issue...

first and foremost, i LOVE my macbook. Had it for almost 3 weeks with ZERO complaints. Doesn't run TOO hot, no unexplained noises, nothing
All that said, i'm wondering if i'm experiencing some of this "discoloration" everyone keeps talking about. 3 weeks in and it's already starting to show some serious wear, specifically on the button. I'll post a few pics, which don't really do it justice. Just thought I'd post here before and get opinions of other people before i bring it in and make a bigger deal out of it than is necessary.
if i DO need to bring it it, what steps do i need to take?
    thanks everybody!!

"When Apple does repair it, you will get exactely
the same cover. I mean, it has been made from
exactely the same plastic. The discoloration will
come back in abaut the same time."
I'm not sure I buy this. I had my cover replaced, and
it has a much different feel that the one I had
originally. The replacement is very smooth, whereas
the original had a much more textured feel. Sorry,
    but I'm not convinced.
Yea, you are right if you have any of the first models off the macbook. But if you macbook is younger then 4 weeks, then you will get exactely the same cover. Anyway that is what i see when i repair them. I work in the Machouse in the netherlands, biggest apple store round there. Even the model numbers off the covers are exactely the same. The first models off the macbook had a slightly different cover, so that would be usefull to replace. But your macbook is 3 weeks old, so you will get the same. At least in the Apple Sore in Holland.
"When it is put together again, it will always be a
    little weaker then before."
Not to be difficult here, but what is your evidence
for this claim? Granted, I don't like having my
computer taken apart and repaired either (sort of
like a car, I suppose), but why is it necessarily a
    "little weaker"?
That is a common issue. I dont know if you have ever opened a apple Powerbook or Macbook or Macbook Pro. The cover has always clicked with plastic lips. Every time you open the notebook, those lips weaken. How gentely you open the cover, there will always damage one off the clips. Becouse you have to slide around a stick at the side off the laptop to open it.

  • The old TIMESTAMP issue on a query

    I have an SQL query
    DATE_COL = TIMESTAMP '2009-01-30 00:00:00'
Where the date is generated by a repository variable with a default initializer.
Now in metalink Oracle seem to suggest that we should be able to have a default initializer of DATE '30-JAN-2009' which I tried and seemed to work and gave me
    DATE_COL = TO_DATE('30-JAN-2009')
however after working once, subsequent changes to the repository caused the TO_DATE to disappear and I was left with:
    DATE_COL = '30-JAN-2009'
Has anyone managed to successfully use DATE in the default initializer??

  • In addition to sleep issue is anyone esle experiencing these issues-

I am having the same sleep issues as everyone else. I also noticed that whenever I have to reboot in order to wake it from sleep I have to go back and adjust my settings . I use a wireless mouse and not the D-pad but the D-pad always turns back on after a reboot. It will not stay off. I noticed other software settings do not stay as I set them and they have to be manually set EVERY TIME I reboot. This is absolutely insane. I was about to buy a Mac after becoming so frustrated with Windows 8 but decided to hold off to give 10 a try. I am shopping Macs now. Had it with Microsoft. I just need to get the computer operating efficiently until I can do the switchout to Mac in the next month. This is killing my busiiness...

  • USB Card (w/o sleep issues) for PowerMac G5 1.8 MhZ DP?

I know this topic has been covered before, but I'd like to get some up-to-date recommendations. I need a powered USB 2.0 card that doesn't have the dreaded sleep issues that many USB cards are plagued with. My computer is a PowerMac G5 1.8 Mhz DP.
If you used any special drivers, please post a link to them as well.
    Thanks,
    Kelly

If we understand why the usb powered devices cause issues, it helps to decide what, to hook up, where.
When a command to sleep (or shutdown, for that matter) is given, the motherboard tells everything attached that sleep is coming, begin your protocals. Then, the motherboard starts powering down internals, one of the first being pci cards. If the devices attached are usb powered (no built in power supply), these devices can no longer communicate with the motherboard. Without these communications (ie replies) the motherboard sleeps what it can, and waits for the others to reply, though they can't. Thus, no deep sleep, sleep lock.
Input devices, keyboards, mice, joysticks, should always be connected to system native ports. They draw power from the usb, as well as provide vital communication (ie wake up).
Printers, scanners, scales(?), devices that sit around and wait for use, have their own power supplies, and are usually no problem. BUT, some do cause problems, probably due to proprietory firmware on built in ROM that runs in conflict with the system firmware, and sleep protocals. These devices must be tried, one at a time, to test the overall compatibility when attached thru a pci card.
Hard drives and card readers are also case by case. Best bet is plug in to native ports, or try to "eject" or spin down prior to sleep. Motherboards communicate with all storage devices at sleep and waking, and a powered down pci will break necessary communications with these devices.
I think ,as you have read from the experiences of others , it is necessary to have patience and try connections individually, then in combinations.
If not completly necessary, opting for a powered usb 2.0 hub attached to a native port is the safest, and surest, bet.

  • Sleep issue 10.4.8

Well another update another sleep issue. It won't sleep auto or manually. Yes I unplug all, backed up all, repaired permissions before and after upgrade. Anyone having sleep issues as well?

There have been many sleep issues since 10.6 and before, check the post they are there. The deep sleep issues seem to effect USB cards and firewire drives. Mostly ones added later as I updated to USB 2, firewire 800, and external drive. I checked compatibility before purchasing and only purchased ones with success records. Since 10.6 each has failed to meet the updates. If you track the IOUSBfamily.ktext updates you can see the version and dates for updates.
First I used Software Update from the Apple menu. The sleep issue returned. So I looked in the system/library/extension folder and discovered that the IOUSBFamily.kext file had not changed from version 2.2.8, which was the one from 10.4.6 that had fixed our sleep issue. I figured that this would have been changed because there is mention of USB issues being handled in this update. So I ran the Combo update and all is well again and I have an unmodified system folder that sleeps with USB, as it should.... Funny thing is this new version is 2.5.6 that is the same version that was replaced as the fix.
However this was only a temporary fix I went back to version 2.2 dated 29 March 2005 and my sleep issues were fixed. I do agree this is a pain and Apple should address or at least keep consistent but Apple is updating its system not third party compatibility. It would be nice if they did but they never have paid much attention to third party hardware vendors. They want you/me to buy a new computer. Presumably that is dilemma when buying both hardware and software from the same company. It’s not much of a problem compared to Wintel machines and I'll never buy one of those.
Fortunately I'll stick with Apple and these discussions to help repair what Apple doesn't. It has worked for decades.

  • Random sleep issues

Hi all, my PowerBook G4 17" 1.67Ghz 10.5.8 recently started having sleep issues. It would randomly just to sleep.  I googled and searched here for answers, reset the PRAM and PMU each several times, ran Disk Warrior, all would seem fine for a few hours or days and then the sudden sleep issues came back. I have an up to date clone back up so I wiped the drive clean, reinstalled Leopard and had just started the data transfer from my backup via FireWire when........ It went to sleep. I woke it, one minute later it's asleep again. It does not want to stay awake for more than 2 minutes, under a minute most of the time.  Any thoughts ?
    Thanks for any help.
      Randy

    Hello,
I recently came across someone with a MacBook Pro 2006-2008 model with the same issue.
Turned out to be the magnetic mechanism in the top case. You may need to replace the top case inclusive of the keyboard. They tested this by removing the top cover and powering on the laptop. 17" PowerBook is one of the easiest covers to remove. You may wish to plug a USB mouse to help you close the machine down after testing, should you decided to test.
    Best of luck

  • I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep.

I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting the new computer, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep. I want to use my iCloud password on both computers consistently. How can I fix this?

The only other place to change a password for the computer login is in Users & Groups preferences. But I don't really know enough here to fix your problem. You can try fixing the keychain:
iCloud- Frequently asked questions about iCloud Keychain
    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.

Hello, Im new to this website. Im having issues with my Macbook. I have the old 2009 model Macbook and it is our schools macbook. The school just upgraded these MacBooks to OSX Mavericks and when i try to open Minecraft it won't let me. It says no jdk installed. I also try to install Java SE runtime but half way through the Software Update it says cant download software because of network problem but I'm connected to the internet and i can browse stuff just fine. Can any one help with my problems. P.S. I don't know the administrator password or stuff like that. And yes we are allowed to play games and stuff on these laptops but only at home not at school so don't tell me i need to focus on school and not games.

Since you updated the operating system, it is probably Minecraft is missing certain files that ware remove or are not longer comparable with the new version of the OSX. what I recommend, is to check is there is an update for Minecraft and install that. If there is not update available, probably the best thing will be reinstalling Minecraft. Hope this will help you.

  • Since downloading Mtn.Lion my epson printer doesn't work correctly & the entire system seems to be slower plus my iMac now disconnects from my wifi every time the mac sleeps. Can anyone help me with these issues?

I am having problems with my Imac (approx 1 yr old) every since I downloaded (from the App.Store) Mountain Lion.  I am a working mom with 3 toddlers.....I have very little time to work on the computer which I primarily use for photograhpy needs.  I am not computer savvy enough to figure out how to "fix" the new issues/problems and am frustrated.  I am hoping someone can help me........
Issues just since downloading Mountain Lion:
    1)  My Epson R2400 printer is not printing properly.  It wouldnt print at all from CS5 the first 2 days.  Then just started printing.  The prints aren't nearly as good as they used to be.  I just installed Photoshop Elements 10 and have been able to print but the prints are just awful. I printed a test page and it was perfect.  I've triple checked the settings in the print dialogue box to ensure the correct paper is chosen, etc.  I've never let the printer manage the color before but it is the only option that gives a mediocre print at best.
I've gone to Epson.com.   It says to update driver through Apple for Mtn. Lion.  According to my computer I have no updates.  Printer is connected via USB. Changed the ports, turned printer on & off.  Emailed epson & they said to reset the print queue, which I did.  Restarted the IMac Still no luck.  (The error message I got when trying to print from CS5 is "filter failed." But, as stated before it just started printing today as I was typing this.
I print out pics quite a bit and it seems the only time I have ever had problems is when I upgraded the OSX system. Why is that??  When I upgraded to 10.7 is when I first realized my print quality went down.
    2)  Now every time I "wake" up my computer it has become offline and has to go through the steps to reconnect to my wifi.  Never did that before Mtn.Lion.  I purchased the Airport Extreme Dec 2011.  My computer was always connected before the update.  Now I have to scroll down & pick my network & wait for it to connect before proceeding.   I double checked preferences and it is set up to check for updates automatically.  What is that about??
    3)  It just seems that my system overall is slower.  I love my mac but I am frustrated because I don't have the free time needed to do all this problem solving.  I just need it to work properly when I have a few minutes to work on a picture.  I imagine there are other issues, but these are the only  2 areas I've focused on since the upgrade.
I've read different views/feedback on Mtn Lion but haven't come across the printer issue or the wifi connection issue.
Can anyone direct me towards a solution? I really appreciate it!
    T

I just figured out the print quality issue for my wife with her new iMac and new printer.
She replaced both at once and she couldn't understand why her Artisan 730 was lower quality then her Epson R280 when they had the same specs.
Turns out the newer printer had the option to connect via wifi which we used during setup.
The driver options are completely different depending on how you connect.
Once I connected via USB the correct options were available and the print quality was better.
Looking at the R2400 it dies not have wifi, but while researching the problem for my wife someone esle was having an issue updating to the latest printer driver.
If you go into the print utility from the Printer and Scanner system preference and under the general tab you should have driver 5.5.
One user had to delete the old printer driver before Software Update loaded the newer printer driver.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15947486#15947486
On my MacBook Pro (w Snow Leopard) I always had to reconnect my wifi at home when it woke up. I upgraded my router from an old Netgear to a newer N D-Link and stopped having to do that.
I would be surprised you would have that problem with an Airport Extreme, you might check to see if there is a firmware update for it.
