The only way I got Yosemite to Work.... the Hard way

I think I have tried every suggestion in the support forum to get my Yosemite running on my 2013 15" MBP from Mavericks.   Everything I tried ended up with a black screen with a white circle with a slash.  Tried the upgrade way, upgrade with safe boot, upgrade with verbose boot.  I cleaned up the MBP, fixed all permissions, ran Disk warrior AND Diskutility first aid.
I then tried a clean install by creating a boot disc on a USB drive.  Erased the MBP SSD.   That did work and I had a working Yosemite but none of my stuff on it.  So I did migration assistant.  Black screen with white slashed circle.
Oh also tried the trim enabler someone suggested.
So I went back and did another clean install to the working yosemite and use shared drives to move music, videos, and photos over to Itunes and Aperture.  Loaded new programs not on app store.  downloaded programs from App store.
Everything is working now.  But it took about 80 hrs of working and waiting (mostly waiting).  Never had a problem like this before.   Evidently there was something on my MBP in the applications, or settings or something that Yosemite did not like.
The good news is that my MBP is pretty lean now compared to the previous set up that had lots and lots of little apps that I had tried and stopped using but never removed complete with applications, application support, and application prefs.
So if you are having problems you can do this brute force clean install and it should work.

I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit.

    You say that 'the only that got downloaded was the iTunes extras' - have you ever download the actual film ? If not then does the Store > Check For Available Downloads menu option on your Mac's iTunes find it ? If that doesn't find it then see if it shows in the 'redownloading' area under Quicklinks :
    Whether you can redownload the film depends upon what country that you are in, and if the studio/rights-holder allows redownloading. Does the film appear under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your Mac's iTunes

    Welcome to the boards.
    First, what kind of liquid was it, and was it fully submersed?  For how long?  Do you see water droplets or moisture behind the screen?  How long did you leave it in rice for?  Etc.  More data please.
    And the short answer is no, apple care does not extend from your iPhone to your iPad mini.  Both items require separate Apple Care plans to be covered.  Furthermore, I don't think water damage is covered under Apple Care.  Only manufacturing defects.
    If you bought it on a Credit Card, you may be lucky enough to call them and ask them if they have a replacement program as a benefit for being a card holder.  I believe AMEX has one on their Platinum cards, and worse case scenario, you can always try to file a claim with your home insurance or renters insurance  (check your policy).  Just beware, if you go the Insurance route in filing a claim, you might have your premium go up in the next cycle. 
    It's a double edged sword, I'm sorry.

  • What do you do when a DVD is the only footage you got?

    Ok so here's the story, I posted something like this about a week ago on a earlier forum discussion, but now some of the apsects have changed.
    A family member took some of our 8mm reel film into a transfering place to have the footage put on DVD. Well the DVD turned out great, but I wanted to take part of that DVD and edit it so I could make a documentry tribute film about my Dad whom passed away awhile back. On that DVD there is about 8 minutes of good footage of him that I would like to use, so I used a trial DVD ripping/converting software and converted it to MPEG2 and the results were great, quality appeared just as good as the DVD and I would be fine with using that for my documentry/tribute film, when I imported it into Premiere 1.5 it plays fine on the monitor and it actually plays great on the timeline, no complaints. Now when I go to render it, it plays all jerky like the frames get all messed up or something. On that earlier discussion that I posted this information, people had responded that I need to get the original 8mm film and have it transferred to mini DV or on a hard drive so I can edit it from there. Well the problem with that is the original 8mm film got thrown out after the DVD was made, so all I have is the DVD. Is there any setting I can change in Premiere so it isn't all choppy like that when I render it or is there a way I can have the DVD transferred to mini DV tape and then edit it in Premiere as usual? I'm not sure what to do and I really need the footage off the DVD. I do realize that I'm going to lose quality, but this is all I got, so I have to make it work. Do transfer video places have the ability to put a DVD into a format which wont lose much quality, is it possible to have them transfer it to mini DV or is there a way I can? Please, please help,

    For those following along at home, I responded to Jason via PM.
    Much will be eliminated, but given the situation, my recommendation was to use either a digital video camera with passthrough capabilities (or A-D bridge) to feed from the DVD player and capture as DV-AVI Type II for editing. Yes, there will still be the first MPEG-2 compression (no way around it), and then, if DVD-Video is the intended output, another Transcoding to MPEG-2.
    I had suggested going up to the max with the bit-rate, when Transcoding this section for use in a DVD-Video.
    I'm hoping that someone else has an even better plan for Jason, so that the very best possible output can be obtained, regardless of what the source footage is in this case.
    There is also no need to suggest going back to the original 8mm, as they no longer exist. Obviously, if possible, that would be the ideal, and just telecine to a miniDV tape. Unfortunately, that is not a possibility.

    Change your iTunes (Apple ID) password along with any other password that was stored in the iPod.  If any passwords are associated with credit cards, contact the CC company and get your card replaced (with a new number).  If any passwords are associated with your bank or any savings institution, contact them also and discuss approprate action with them.
    The "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief.  All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
    The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself.  This requires action before the device is lost/stolen.  If the device has significant personal information, it should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

    You can clean any mild soap(no harsh chemical) as i do mine i just take it off ipad from cover wash throughly inside and out and hang it until dry.

    Restart your phone by holding the power and home button until the Apple logo appears. If that does not solve the issue contact your cell provider so they can resolve the issue.

  • Am i the only one who when trying to enter the code for creative cloud activation ?

    I give up,i have been trying to activate a 3 month subscription for CS6 from Staples and every time i try the code it will not work.  I have used the chat live and spent about 3 hours already going nowhere.  I do not like talking on the phone to some help desk overseas and the only thing i think left to do is to return the junk.

    I tried all that and even took a picture of the numbers and blew them up so a blind person could read them and had 3 others read them off.  A simple way to fix the problem is get someone on Adobes staff to find a font that most people can read from whatever product the stick it to.

    Hey John,
    Not sure if it helps or not, but I know sometimes with codes like that its really hard to tell certain characters apart, O - like in Oscar versus 0 - number and number 1 versus lowercase L like in Lima.
    Might test entering it both ways if you have any suspect characters?

The only thing different is that I added the zedge update app to do a sync for adding ringtones to my apple cell phone. How can I get a good boot. I am fairly new to apple computer.

    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
    Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
    If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying.  The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
    Check the health of the disk.  Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R).  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup. 
    Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.  Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
    If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable.  A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
    If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so.  If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one.  Any 1 TB external drive will do.
    Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk. 
    Reformat the external disk.  (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
    Boot in Recovery Mode.  Start Disk Utility.  Plug in the new disk.  Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
    Partition Layout > Single Partition
    Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
    Apply
    Select the Restore tab.
    Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
    Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
    Click on Restore.
    It may take a long time for the backup.
    If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
    If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk.  If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more.  If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally?  If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
    If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.
