The Open Screen Project

I was looking at the Adobe blogs this morning and saw the following.
http://blogs.adobe.com/open/2008/04/the_open_screen_project.html
This linked to the following page.
http://www.adobe.com/openscreenproject/
The second of the above links has the following within it.
quote
The Open Screen Project is dedicated to driving consistent rich Internet
experiences across televisions, personal computers, mobile devices, and
consumer electronics.
end quote
It seems to me that there might possibly be interaction with MHP technology.
So I mention the links here in the hope that they might be of interest and
that maybe an MHP specialist might comment on this development please.

Some readers might like to know of a thread entitled "The Open Screen Project and Fonts" which I started in the General Font Discussions section of a forum about fontmaking.
http://forum.high-logic.com/viewtopic.php?t=2254
The issue is the licensing of fonts in relation to embedding. Some commercial font foundries (most? nearly all?) limit embedding of fonts to situations of sending a document to a printer, not allowing it in relation to embedding in an item which is to be published on the web.
So, is the spread of typographic designs with Flash across televisions to be greatly limited by issues of font licensing?
In many interactive television systems there is no mouse or pointer, so clicking on Flash buttons would be a problem.
Some readers might be interested in the following.
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Accessibility_Computing_Numerical_Pointer
The addition of the on-screen-button pushing alcove to the Accessibility Computing Numerical Pointer will hopefully solve the problem of clicking on a Flash button in a system where there is no mouse or pointer.
Does pushing a Flash button require a mouse down event or a mouse click event?
Also, there is the on-screen-button mouse-over alcove of the Accessibility Computing Numerical Pointer which will hopefully solve the problem of producing a mouse-over effect on a Flash button in a system where there is no mouse or pointer.

  • Open letter to Adrian Ludwig and others involved in the Open Screen Project

Since Microsoft decided to abandon the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform, Adobe shifted it's focus toward Windows Phone 7. As evident from Adrian Ludwig's video, some progress has been made. The video demonstrated Flash on the HTC Leo and Nexus One handsets. It appears that this work on winmo 6.5 will now be abandoned as Adobe is forced to shift it's focus on Windows Phone 7 and of course the Android as well.
Is there any way  that the work that has already be done doesn't simly become abandoned? Can it be distributed to the developer comunity to be worked on, over at the XDA forums, for example? Thanks you.

    Hello flash4mobile
Actually Microsoft has not abandoned WinMob6.5. They have repositioned it as a platform for corporate users and there are millions of handsets shipping with it right now. It's a shame that Adobe has given up on its efforts to get Flash on this platform. Granted, business users may not be the ideal target for Flash content.
On the other hand, the shiny new Windows Phone 7 series that was shown at Mobile World Congress and at MIX10 earlier this year is targeted at consumers. It has Silverlight at the core of its slick UI.
I think it makes a lot of sense to have Flash Player in the browser on these consumer devices, however they won't be out until the holiday season this year I guess. Maybe Adobe don't want to stretch their resources too thin and are targetting only the most recent consumer-oriented devices.
I would be curious to know whether there are plans to bring AIR to WP7 too?
My bet is that Microsoft won't let that happen since the "native" app development environment for WP7 is actually Silverlight / .NET ...
    Adobeans: any input ?

  • Adobe's Open Screen Project. Opinions?

It seems like Adobe is trying to slowly shift towards Open Source, as its concurrents (i.e. MS) are adopting open standards. Adobe has now launched the "Open Screen Project":
The Open Screen Project, supported by Adobe and several "industry leaders" and announced today, is supposed to foster the creation of a "consistent runtime environment" that will "remove barriers for developers and designers as they publish content and applications across desktops and devices, including phones, mobile Internet devices, and set top boxes". The idea is that such a runtime environment will provide the best performance across a wide range of operating systems.
As part of the Open Screen Project, Adobe announced several changes in their policies towards Flash, "to open access to Adobe Flash technology":
        * Removing restrictions on use of the SWF and FLV/F4V specifications
        * Publishing the device porting layer APIs for Adobe Flash Player
        * Publishing the Adobe Flash Cast protocol and the AMF protocol for robust data services
        * Removing licensing fees - making next major releases of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR for devices free

I suppose that the issue with swfdec and gnash is not understanding the standard from a design perspective, but rather turning that into code and testing the code.

  • I had completed my iDVD project and burned a disc. It worked great! Then someone messed with the project and put a red frame around the opening screen. Now when I burn the project, it no longer has the opening frame. How can I fix?

I had completed my iDVD project, a Wedding Slideshow with pictures and music, and burned it on a disc. It worked great! Then someone messed with the original project on my computer and clicked around and put a red frame around the opening screen that has the Wedding theme with music. Now when I burn the project to make more DVDs, it burns but no longer has the opening frame. It immediately opens to the iMovie slideshow. How can I fix so I can burn the entire project with opening frames?

As Bengt suggested make a disk image of the successfully burned DVD using Disk Utility. Then you can burn copies any time you need one.
In the future once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
You can then burn it to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Adobe's Open Screen Project (OSP) defunct?

Can anyone confirm if the OSP has been terminated? We received an email from our Bsquare representative that said the OSP was no longer accepting applications. So does this mean that Adobe scrapped there idea for license free distribution as described by this video: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2010-envision/open-screen-project-today-and-beyond? Or is the participation in this program by invitation only? Do you have to be a phone maker, or Microsoft to join. It didn’t sound like that on the video? I have no doubt that they would open up the program again if Apple asked to Join, but if you are a small OEM I guess you need pay the piper.

On the opening screen of my 1pad2 the itunes apple icon and usb cord are displayed.  How do I delete them?  Do NOT tell me to download anything, as I CANNOT GET INTO THE IPAD.

You can't get rid of those icons because that means that you MUST connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and restore the device. You have no choice. There is no way to remove that from the screen. Something went wrong on the iPad and you need to restore it now.

  • Can't open my ipadmini-it does'nt respond when I swipe the opening screen

I, suddenly, cannot open my ipadmini. It suddenly has stopped responding to my opening swipe(used to get to the opening screen with all the app icons). I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Are there any members with any ideas out there?  The unit has not been dropped or gotten wet. It was working fine an hour ago when I last used it.

I do not know if it will help, but try a reset (hold the power and home keys down until the Apple logo appears).

I purchased a movie through iTunes and the movie gets stuck on the opening screen and will not play.  Has anybody had this happen?  And if so is there any solution?

    Hey Christian,
I'd follow the troubleshooting steps below, from this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
See if that resolves the issue and gets your video playing again.
    All the best,
    David
