The operation can't be completed because the original item for "media" can't be found

Yosemite recognizes my BlackBerry Z30 on my Network. I see my Media Folder and my Removable_Sdcard.
Whenever I try to access them I get this message:
The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “media” can’t be found.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

I am having the same exact issue and I've been busting my testi-balls to figure it out. I've got 15 years experience in the computer game and still can't figure it out. I see a lot of people having similiar issues, but no one seems to have an answer for MY issue, which is virtually the same as the OP.
Brand new Macbook Retina.
Windows 7 x64 Machine.
ALL drives shared with ALL permissions of ALL accounts manually inserted on the Windows 7 side.
ALL other PC's in the house can access the drives on the Windows 7 machine without issue.
Only the Macbook Retina has the problem connecting. Every Windows drive I shared is visible under "network" in finder, but when I click on any of them it gives the quoted error message the OP stated.
PLEASE, if anyone finds a fix for this, let us know!

Sorry, I am very confused. I asked the following question....
Is this the only backup file on your Mac, or do you have other backup files and data on the Time Capsule disk?
The answer that you gave was....
    This is the only one
    Now you are saying that....
But I have lots of other files on Time Capsule! The back up file is only one of them.
    Can you clarify, please?

I have the same problem (no ability to move or delete a file that the OS thinks is in use, when in fact it is not). I can offer a few clues that may help others help us. The problem in my case is that my Powerbook had trouble copying a large image file. Instead of copying a 5.8MB file, it stopped part way in the process, said the file could not be read or copied and left a 4kb fragment of a file which now cannot be deleted (I get exactly the same message as you). So I think our problem is not knowing how to delete a corrupted file. Anyone know the answer to this?

    Hi

Get a USB drive of 2TB or more.. assuming your TC is 2TB. Either preformatted Mac or plug into your Mac and format it standard Mac OS Extended Journaled in disk utility.
Do a full archive of the TC. You do this using airport utility. Do not click the erase disk.. I marked in green.. just the archive.. that is to backup the internal disk to the USB disk. It is not fast.. take it that the process will go at around 40-50GB/hr.
Once you complete the archive .. it is a direct image of the data on your TC.. you can then plug it into your computer directly.. and then try and open the files you lost.. if you cannot open them.. open disk utility and fix the permissions.
    http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/13/repair-disk-permissions-mac-os-x/
Or try the methods apple recommends..
OS X Yosemite: Set permissions for items on your Mac
It is possible to fix things on the USB drive because it is locally mounted.. but you cannot fix it on TC which is network drive.

  • Cannot delete file: The operation can't be completed because the item "DataReferences" is in use.

I have a My Book TB Drive where all of my Time Machine backups go to. I decided to delete some older version of backups. They ended up in my trash can. When I deleted the items in my trash can, all of them erased with the exception of one file. This file refuses to go! I have tried "Empty Trash", "Secure Empty Trash" and holding the Option Key + "Secure Empty Trash". Each time the I get the following error: The operation can’t be completed because the item “DataReferences” is in use.
If I unplug the My Book TB Drvie, the file dissapears from the trash can. If I plug it back in, it reappears.
I am not sure what to do anymore. Any suggestions?

  • Cannot empty trash: "The operation can't be completed because the item ...

I've been having trouble emptying the trash. I get the following error, "The operation can’t be completed because the item "_file name_" is in use."
I've tried unlocking the files, but the unlock doesn't seem to stick.
I'm not sure if this is related, but a couple of months ago, I had a repair done and since then some of my software have required me to enter my license information again; apparently it looked as if I was running the programs on a different machine.
    Anyone have tips/solns?

    Thank you!
I ended up sticking the startup disc in, restarting while holding down the "c" key, and "using the Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs function of the Reset Paswoord function of the Utilities menu."
It worked perfectly; I now have an empty trash can.

  • Operation can't be completed because the item "Database.sqlite3" is in use?

"The operation can’t be completed because the item “Database.sqlite3” is in use."
Every so often when I go to empty my trash I get this pop-up message from the Finder - any clues as to where this file is being generated? I can't figure out where this file is coming from - and google didn't have much on what that file even is. Is it something in the OS, or perhaps a third party app doing it? Anyone else ever have this message? Thanks.

The Database.sqlite3 file (SO related) is here:

  • A PDF file was filed in documents. when trying to move this file to trash i got response : operation can't be completed because the itempdf is in usen

A PDF file was filed in DOCUMENTS, when trying to move this PDF file to trash I got the response: "Operation can't be completed because the item ..... is in use".
How do I get this document deleted from the system?

The suggestion to move items from documetns to desktop and then moving to trash is the one that worked.
I have now one other question and that is that during my strugle with the original problem I called with Apple helpline and there they suggested to move the application "Preview" to trash and then the  issue would be solved. I did so but clearly the issue was not solved.
Bottom line is that with your solution I got rid of the PDF files, but I still need to reinstall the Preview application. Do you have suggestions how to do that??

  • The operation can't be completed because the original item cannot be found.

    Hi all.
I've been having this problem for a while. I have a file server on a windows xp system with multiple drives attached to that pc (internal and external).
When I try mounting one of them from the finder I get the message :
+*The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “Movies” can’t be found.*+
Other drives on the pc mount just fine and actually the problematic one used to mount fine and then suddenly it seems that the mac lost the path to the disk and can no longer find it.
I tried reformating the drive, changing the drive letter, and naming. It worked for a while then the drive got lost again
Its a WD drive formatted to ntfs (Identical configs and brand to all the other working drives) Its not a drive defect either. Its happened more than once.
I'm quite knowledgable when it comes to computers but this has been a dead end for me and I'm sure for others as well.
    Please Help

I was about to post exactly this question. I have suddenly lost access to the folder on my shared network drive although the drive itself is still visible. I get the above error message when trying to open folders within. I have tried connecting through various routes such as Go - Connect to server ... but its the same.
A discussion thread elsewhere talked about deleting multiple share point entries ... over my head though.
Hope someone out there knows the answer - and how to explain it in plain english

  • The operation can't be completed because the original item ".." can't be found.  Need a fix!

Ok.  This is my first and hopefully only discussion ever!  Thanks in advance for all the help.
I had set up my network and this was all working fine for months.  Time Machine did proper back ups and I could store files on the drive as well over the network.  Not sure how, or exactly when this error began.  It may have had something to do with the upgrade to Mavericks.
But I can see the drive when I open Finder (which I have named Airport) can then access the directories but will not load any of the files.  If the Finder window is closed and I try to access the external drive again via the network, I am prompted with.."The operation can't be completed because the original item ".(Airport)." can't be found. Also of note...there is no "eject" option beside the name of the drive.
I have found only one solution that was dated in 2008 where someone was deleting volumes from their machine and the instructions were not quite clear, so I'm hoping for some new insight on this issue.  Honestly, I just didn't understand how to do what he said...several have asked him to elaborate but no further explanations and all other links are now dead.  It seems this is a common issue.  I'm aware many people will read this and want to say..."i Have this problem too, when im doing something with windows and other computers..."  There are many solutions for these situations that I have found....but no recent ones for those with ONLY one drive and an airport extreme running only Apple computers.  So guys, lets try to keep this thread for one topic only.  Hopefully a quick and helpful thread with a few replies and some step by step directions to solve everyones toubles.
I even had my router replaced and still the same issue.  Also, the hard drive works perfectly when hardwired to my computer.  So the issue must lay within the settings of my MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9.1.  If you feel I should provide any other information I would be happy to do so!

    Lexvo,
Thanks for the input.  I had to look up what SMB stood for, server message block?  So I'm assuming this is not something I'm using.
Also, this is not a "sometimes" problem.  This is a consistent and reproducible issue.
As far as an update...I dont see an OS update fixing my issue unless something is overwritten, but maybe not.
I think a good point to consider and open to discussion is why does logging in as a root user solve the issue?  What can be done or manipulated to allow functionality with my regular login info versus a root user?

  • The operation can't be completed because the original item for " your drive name here " can't be found

    Hey all,
I hope someone can help.  I am running 10.7.5 OSX currently on my Mac Book Pro.  I recently got a new Windows 8 desktop.  A ceap one running Windows 8.  I currently have 5 drives shared over my home network.  3 are working just fine (the 3 I just put on the network today).  The other 2, however, were previously on my old Windows Vista computer also shared over my network.  My Mac Book Pro had access just fine (I set up sharing on my vista comp) and everything ran smooth.  Today when I hooked up my new Windows 8 computer and put the 5 drives on and shared them via my network, same way as I done before, 3 are working fine but the two original drives give me an error when I try and access them from my Mac over my home network.  They both show up with the correct names but when I try and access them it tells me:
The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “M&V” can’t be found.
M&V is the name of one of the drives.  Here is the trouble shooting I have done:
    - Renamed the drives multiple times
    - Tripple checked my permissions
    - Checked for updates and installed both on my PC and Mac
    - Restarted my PC and Mac
    - Tried Both of my dual frequencies on my netowork
    - Tried hooking up with ethernet cable
    - Changed the user name and password for my shared access on my PC multiple times and put in the correct info on my Mac
    - Tried taking away all passwords (unsecured)
    - My other Windows PS's can access all drives just fine
But still I get the above error.  I have isolated it to an issue with my Mac. I was thinking maybe if there is a way to have my Mac forget the shared drives and I can re-add them and put in my password, I am not sure if that is even possible. I am at al loss on what to do.  Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

  • The operation can't be completed because the item "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" is in use.

I am trying to transfer my iTunes from my PC to my new Mac. After reading through this forum a bit, I followed the instructions at: http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/move_itunes_windows_mac.html
I backed up my PC's iTunes folder to an external drive after selecting to consolidate files, etc.
I connected the external drive to my Mac and did a copy and paste of the iTunes folder. I have not put any music into the iTunes on the Mac, so I just said Yes to overrite (it said there are 2 files that will be overwritten- I think they are apps I downloaded this weekenad i am fine to overwrite them). It starts to copy and then I get the error message: "The operation can’t be completed because the item “iTunes Library Extras.itdb” is in use." I verified that I do not have iTunes open on the Mac and made sure that when I backed up from PC, I did not have iTunes open there either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Katie

    I figured it out!
There was an iTunes folder on my new Mac. I may have installed it. I just deleted the whole iTunes folder under Music. I then tried copying and pasting from my External Drive again and now it is copying the data as I would expect.

  • The operation can't be completed because the item "PkgInfo" is in use.

When I try to replace an application in my applications folder with a new version that I have downloaded from the net by copying over the old one, I get the following message:
The operation can’t be completed because the item “PkgInfo” is in use.
I have the original application in my Apps folder, I drag in the new version and then get that message so I have to manually take the application to the trash and then I can put the new version in the Apps folder. This has happened on many occasions since upgrading to Snow Leopard.
Any ideas anyone on why this is happening and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

This is happening to me on 10.5.8 as well, so it's not a Snow Leopard thing.
Generally, the copy works on trying it a second time.
