The Order of songs in the library

ok.. so I'm trying to place my songs in my library in a certain order.. like to have itunes play my most favorite song of a band first and then so on and so forth. I can't seem to click and drag them in the order I want and I was wondering if there was anyway to do this. I know I can do it for playlists, and that's no what I want. I want it in the main library. Could anybody help!?! Please!? Thanks!

Make sure that the mentioned playlist is sorted by number: Click on top of the very left column, then drag your files into the desired position.

Why can't I change the order of songs in my iTunes library?

That's the normal intended behaviour of the Library. I'm not exactly sure why it is, but I guess it's to make it clear to users that if they want to "fine tune" the tracks they should use a playlist (just like you can't use the burn button in the library).
I'm sure you've noticed that you can still sort the library by clicking the headings.

With using any version of iTunes, whenever I import songs into my library using the "add to library" function, iTunes adds those songs in songs' alphabetical order. This is pretty annoying since it does not preserve the logical track number or album.

hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music' then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo

The music I sync into my iPod touch is all literally out of order and in the library it's not. Why is this?

I checked the starting time for songs in the library and on my iPod and they all say 0:00. What I mean when I say it's out of order is for example, the first ten seconds are skipped and placed somewhere in the middle of the song and some other parts are skipped then played later. I didn't have this problem before I updated iTunes for my new iPod, now when I tried syncing onto my old iPod as well, the same thing happens. So there's nothing wrong with my iPod. I want to know how I can fix this on iTunes or if it's just a glitch on my iTunes?

Something you can try is resetting it all Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings. Or go to Settings > Store & sign out & log back in. Another thing you can do is restore your ipod. This has happened to me but the only thing i did was that i created a new account but try doing the things above i just told you. :)

Make sure neither Shuffle or Repeat are switched on in the playlist, either of those can prevent you reordering tracks.

ITunes mixes up the track order of songs within an album??

My iTunes mixes up the track order, and there is no way to specifically order it by track. i have even gone and individually marked each song as ie(2 of 12) but it still lists them in a random order. How can I make the songs fit in their original order? And none of that "click at the top to order it by artist, album, or time etc," because it doesn't click above track number.

You might be able to achieve what you want by using Party Shuffle. Set the source for Party Shuffle to be the playlist you want to listen to or add the tracks you want to listen to by control clicking on them and selecting Add to Party Shuffle. Once everything is in Party Shuffle, you can rearrange them to your satisfaction. As the songs are played, they'll roll off the queue. You can quit iTunes and even when you restart, all your songs will be there, in the order you want, waiting for you to hit play.

Is there a simple way to downsample songs without re-adding them to the library?

Hello all, here's my problem.
I have a library of about 60 days worth of music, 176GB in size. I have most of my songs in 256kbps and above, with a vast amount in 320mp3. I use the Date Added sorting a lot and I do not want to mess up the chronological system in any way. Basically, the way my "history" looks now should be unaffected. There is a very large amount of playlists too, so no song should have to be manually re-added to each playlist it used to be in. The play count and ratings are also vital for me, so they cannot be lost.
Now, for the actual question, is there a way where I could select which songs can I downsample to a lower-resolution, without having to re-add it to the library, but instead substitute it for the previous file? Again, the file cannot be simply re-added but it has to replace the file that the library links to in order not to lose all the precious information.
If I could do all of this within iTunes, the better.

No. In down sampling with iTunes a new file is created and added to the library. Most of the old data are preserved but some such as date added are created when the track is added.
Using a third party tool may achieve what you want because the new file could overwrite the old one. I recall using a third party tool to edit a mp3 and overwrite the old file. iTunes was tricked into thinking the replacement was still the original file, but of course the edits were in place. I can't make a specific application recommendation for bulk conversion where it will overwrite the old file.
I will regard this as a general iTunes question but in general if you are using beta software versions you should not be posting in the main iTunes forum.

Can I Change The "Date Added" Info -- or Other Way To Edit Order of Songs?

I recorded some music from LP. When I import into iTunes the songs come in alpha order.
Even when I go in and "get Info" and add the track numbers the songs won't sort in the same order as off the album. The next time I named the tracks starting with track # for example -- "1 happy birthday" "2 auld lang sine" ... but it still didn't work. Instead I import the songs in the right order one at a time. No big deal but it would be easier to drag a whole folder once rather than a dozen songs one at a time.
Is there a way to edit the date added info? Or some other way to trick iTunes to play the songs in the order I (and the artist) want?

I didn't explain mtself very well.
Often use my whole library and find albums by sorting on dated added. Or play a bunch of albums one after the other as they sit in the library.
When I click on track # I get all the track 1 s then all the track 2 s etc.
Even if I highlight a selection of songs (like a whole album) the tracks sort first
I know I can make a playlist of the album
I just wondered if there is a way to get album tracks in order when they seem to have been created or imported in a different order.

There are several ways around this that work much better than unchecking stuff since you will still want to be able to play this in iTunes automatically.
One way is to manually manage the iPod...

which will let you simply drag into the iPod the stuff you want or select and delete from the iPod the stuff you want off. The downside of manual updating is that play counts and ratings you set in the iPod are not synced back to your library.
The other method is to use Playlists and Smart Playlists and set your iPod sync preferences to sync only the playlists you want. See this post of mine from earlier today that tells one way to set up a Smart Playlist to be just the right size for your iPod...

The information below may be able to answer your questions about how to delete songs from your iPhone:
Deleting songs downloaded to your device
Tap the Music app.
Tap More > Songs at the bottom.
Scroll or search for the song you would like to delete from your device.
Swipe right to left on the song, and then tap Delete.
Note: You must be in Artists, Songs, or Albums view to delete songs from your device. Deleting from a playlist won't remove a song from your iOS device.

Remove a song from iPhone. Tap Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.
If you have iOS 7, this will delete the song from local storage, but the song will still appear with a cloud symbol in the Music app, as you've noticed. To hide the iTunes in the Cloud purchases, navigate to Settings > iTunes & App Store, and disable "Show All: Music”
There may be a few orphaned songs on your iPhone that were partially downloaded or corrupted in some way. If that is the case, you can erase all of the music from your phone. Follow the instructions below and select the Music app under Usage:
