The original USB charging cable damaging my iPad2

Hey guys,
I just got my new iPad2 and noticed immediately that it is quite difficult to insert the charging cable into the 30 pin dock connector. Well, as it has been stated by other people, the cable leaves some tiny marks on the aluminium body of the iPad2 (on the left and on the right sides inside the dock connector). I had known about it and inserted the cable as carefully as possible.
But now I have also noticed that the black plastic plate with pins inside the dock connector of the iPad2 is slightly dented on one side (maybe the dent was there before). It looks like a tiny bit of a corner is missing. The iPad2 syncs perfectly with my MBP, but I am afraid that the problem will get worse in the future and I will have to replace the dock connector.
Could anyone let me know how your black plastic plate inside the dock connector looks like? Maybe it is just normal...

The dock connector is basically a circuit board. Looks like a slightly badly cut circuit board. It doesn't actually pose any technical issues and is pretty much cosmetic (the printed connects are actually a good distance away from the corners of the board).

  • IPod Touch 4g USB Charging Cable(s!) Not Working. Went through 5 in a year.

I've had my 8 gb iPod Touch 4g since November 12th, 2010. I bought it from Target (so its not covered under warranty anymore) love it and use it for many hours every day, but there is a problem with the USB charging cables.
When I got my iPod, it came with the standard Apple charging cable. That cable worked for a few months (maybe... 3?) and all of a sudden stopped working. When I used my friends cord, it worked perfectly fine. She had the same exact model and cord as I did. I ended up just buying a replacement cord, thinking that this was just a fluke or whatever. No such deal. I purchased a third party cord from amazon, and it worked for a few months again. (Let me note that I also got a car and wall charger with it, those work perfectly fine to this day.) Once again, all of a sudden it broke. And again, I tried a friend's cord and it worked fine.
I ended up buying a third and fourth cords, which was also third party, and after that broke, I was fed up and went to the Genius Bar for an appointment. I explained my problem, and they made an appointment with me. Eventually, they just said to buy another cord, this time Apple brand. I did, and it has been working fine up until tonight, when it just stopped charging.
    When I say that the cords broke, I mean that all of a sudden they would stop charging my iPod, no matter where I plugged it in. (computer, wall, car, etc.) It would/will only charge if I bent it a very certain way, and then I would need to hold it there, which I obviously can't do for hours. (;
I would take this apple cord back now, since I believe there is a warranty (although, I need to double check that when I can get to the papers.) if it weren't for the fact that, from use, the coating/white plastic of the actual cord has split and you can see a few of the wires. I will have to double-check if this is covered, though because of the outside appearance, I doubt that they would take it back. This has not happened with any of the other cords, however.
What should I do? Would restoring help this problem? I have been contemplating the idea for a while, but having to re-download/etc all of my apps, music, etc., is not the most appealing idea to me.. I have reset a few things a while back, though I cannot remember what they are, sadly.
Currently, my iPod is running iOS 5, as I just updated it about a month or so ago. Before that, it was running what the iPod touch 4g originally came with... I believe it was 4.2.1?
I really love my iPod, but am fed up with having to buy cords every few months, as I have gone through four or five in just a year.

I think stevejobsfan has misunderstood your problem.
You specifically state that in one case you can see the inner cord and wires of the lead. So, either - you are mis-handling the cord or a pet is chewing it. So, if you don't have a pet - it's you.
When you remove the cord from the iPod (or from the other end of it) you should handle by the plug, not the cord itself. If you pull the cord you are straining the connection between the cord and the plug and that will eventually cause that connection to break.
If this had happened to just one cord, maybe it's the cord. If it happened to several of the same make from the same source, perhaps it may have been a faulty batch. But for it to happen five times, with cords from different sources and different manufacturers - everything points to the cord being handled too roughly.
Buy another cord - but in future, remove it by gripping the plug and not by pulling on the cord. This applies to any cord or lead, including mains powered devices. If you have any other cords for any other product, I suggest you check them for damage because damaged cords can be a fire risk and create a risk of electric shock. Mains voltage can kill.
Another thought; if you wrap cords - including headphone leads - around anything (such as the charger itself), wrap it loosely. A tight wrap also strains the cord to plug connection.

  • Even genuine iphone 5 usb charging cable does not work for an year?

I have bought an iphone 5 last year. With it, came the  original apple genuine iphone 5 lightning USB cable. It did not last for half year. I had to buy another original apple iphone 5 similar cable and it was gone within 3 months. I dont understand is it cable manufacturing problem? is apply selling fake cables? It is really annoying and I am really angry that such a reputed company cant give/ provide proper long lasting cables.
My experience with these two genuine cables was that after some months of  usage, i used to observe even if its plugged it would not charge, or if you push it hard its charging. Firstly, I never keep my phone charging all time. Then how the hack can the charging cable die? or problem arise. I bought the phone and the charging cables when I was germany. I had to buy a 20 euro local companys USB charging cable after above two stopped working with no signs of damage. I have also tried cleaning the charging jack or socket where cable is inserted. It did not help. This local charging cable started to torn out automatically and it got fully damaged, Now I am in India, I bought another cable of 10 euros and it is just two days, it would not charge again.
I am really furious now whether you use original or local USB cables they dont last for even a week? what the ****?
Do I need to really pay for those portable charger with a big price tag, that my problem will be solved? very very upset. I never have any complaint with the phone, but the charging catastrophies, really ****** me off. I think of going back to other mobile brands like samsung or nokia where there is never a charging issue or battery drainage issue once you charge its goes for days or it  is also expensive buy a nokia or samsung charger if lose it or break it. but for iphones its really bugging situation and not just me many people around the world are having sick problem with iphone brand with charging ISSUES.
APPLE PLEASE SORT THE PROBLEM OR SELL the PORTABLE IPHONE CHARGERS (WIRELESS) CHEAPER so that we dont have to use these silly little lightning cables. or I fear my APPLE I PHONE 5 is not genuine or its FAKE.
    PLEASE HELP>

Look closely at the way you handle the cables. I have never had any cable, Apple or third-party, fail on me.

  • HT1510 My iPod shuffle is not being recognized by my computer. I have the original USB cord but when I plug it into my computer there is no recognition. The first time I plugged it in it recognized but never again.

My iPod shuffle is not being recognized by my computer. It is flashing orange and when plugged in with the original USB cable nothing happens to show the computer recognizes it.

Flashing orange usually means it is being recognized by the computer.  The flashing means do not disconnected, because the shuffle's "disk" is mounted.
In iTunes (with the shuffle connected), when you look in the sidebar (left side of window), under DEVICES, the iPod is not shown there?  Does it say DEVICES in the sidebar?

  • Core MIDI from iPad Mini to Mac via lightning USB charging cable

I want to use some of my Core MIDI compatible iPad Apps to control Logic Pro and other DAWs on my MacBook Pro via USB (Core MIDI over WiFi has unmanageable latency issues).
I read on various forums that it is possible to use Core MIDI via USB using the Apple Camera Connection Kit or Lightning to Mini USB adapter, but doesn't this simply work with the included Lightning to USB charging cable?

Image Capture is a built-in program and should be in your Applications folder, Aperture I bought from the Mac App Store.
For Simple Transfer it's an iPad app, so you would download it on your iPad from the app store.

Is there a USB charging cable for a Canon EOS 550D?

You have to use the battery charger to recharge the battery. The USB port won't do it.

  • Why won't the Apple Composite AV Cable work with ipad2?

I got the Apple Composite AV Cable for our iPad2 but it does not seem to work.  The cable does not work with either our iPad2 or the iPod Touch 2G.  Ironically, the cord *does* work with our ancient iPod 80GB Classic.
The iPad does not show settings for PAL or NTSC or any other settings I could possibly change to try and get the video out to work.  What am I missing?
IPod Touch is set for NTSC and Widescreen has been tried both off and on with no video shown on the TV.
The videos do still show on the iPod/iPad screens while playing.

Apparently the answer is no? I guess for me this is the #1 reason to not buy an iPhone 5. I switched to the iPhone specifically for the component (RCA) cable with charging capabilities for my car audio / nav needs. Android did not have a good solution and Apple did. I am sure there are a hand full of  folks who bought the Pioneer App radio who are stuck as well. Apple needs to make an airplay to component adapter or a cable for the iPhone 5. Newsflash  I am not switching my head unit out for a new phone. Don’t get me wrong I love air play and own an apple TV but hotel rooms, cars, boats and points of usage not going to have air play in all instances. Even if a cable comes out the “digital” port seems telling that component is going away. Time will tell.

  • IPod USB Charging Cable

I've had my IPod Touch since Christmas and I've already gone through 2 USB Charging Cables and it's really starting to annoy me why they keep breaking, I do not know what to do and I do not want to buy another cable, I really need some help here?

I have been using the same Apple Lightning cable for both my iPad 4 and 7G iPod Nano since Nov of 2012 with no problem.
It sounds like you are being rough with the cable. The Apple Cable are covered by a one-year warranty for defects but not abuse.
If you think you have defective Apple cables then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between part #'s MA591G/B and MA591ll/A? Both are Dock Connector to USB Charge Cables. The MA591G/B came with my iPhone 3GS. The MA591LL/A is the part number listed for the same type of cable on another website.

  • Can the Apple USB charger be used to charge other non-Apple USB devices?

Can the Apple USB charger be used to charge other non-Apple USB devices?  I just purchased an electric toothbrush that uses a USB port to charge.  If I'm traveling, I would like to consolidate and take only one charger.  Would it be ok to use the apple charger for both items?

Yes, as long as your toothbrush doesn't require more than 5W power draw.

  • My ipod touch is frozen on a screen with the ipod logo and the usb charger cable...i cannot get rid of it...i let the battery die...i held the sleep button and the power buttons..anyone have any ideas?

my ipod touch is frozen... the screen has a picture of the itunes logo and a usb charger. I have held the sleep button and the power button to reset and i have let the battery die and started to recharge...niether worked. any ideas???

Try charing it to 50% at least.
If all else fails, try putting it in DFU mode. Connect it to iTunes, (iTunes may not detect the device, but that's ok) hold the power and home buttons down for 10 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the home button until it goes into DFU mode. iTunes should detect it and ask for a restore.

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.
    Make a Genius Bar Reservation
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Miix 2 11" USB charging cable proprietary?

Hello, just general questions for the Miix 2 11": 1) Is the USB cable that came with my tablet proprietary? Or can I use any USB 2.0 cable to charge my tablet with the included special 20V 2A power adapter? 2) Can I use a standard Apple or Samsung 2A USB power adapter to charge this tablet? I understand it may be slower due to lower voltage. 3) Will a 2.1A power bank charge my tablet? Thanks! PS Is it really true that Lenovo has no email support?

Yes it is proprietary. It's so proprietary that even Lenovo cannot get you one; at leeast right now. Been bounced from Online Sales, to Tech Support, to Parts And Sales, back to Online Sales, and soon to be back to Parts and Sales tomorrow once they reopen. It's ridiculus. I purchased the only 40W (20V/2A) supply on their site as a backup. What I received is almost correct but also mostly useless. The charge adapter block that plugs into the wall is the same as the one provided with the unit and charges fine if you use the cable provided with the unit. The cable provided with the online sales adapter has what some onlines users call a kink in one of the USB connectors on the cable. It will not plug into the block or into the Miix 2 11. It appears to be made for a different unit all together. No one at the three branches of Lenovo support can or are willing to help. Tech Support only handles failed parts and Parts Sales claim that only Online Sales can help with online purchases. Online sales keeps saying that their computer does not list the correct part or that they cannot order it and only Parts and Sales can do that; 145500118 is the part number of the cable in question.  The cable is a standard looking USB Type A plug on both sides, but it drives 20V across some or all of the 6 pins. The typical USB cable has only four pins within the plug. No one, and i've even petitioned cable making websites, makes a 6 pin cable with a USB Type A end on both sides. There is an actual USB spec that supports this concept of fast charge with high voltage, but I'm not sure that if it uses 6 pins, the standard 4, or a different connector. And, no the unit will not charge with the cable provided in any other charger but the one provided. I've tried a 2 amp stanard USB charger with the provided unit cable, and this did not activate the charge indicator on the screen. It does not appear to recognize charging state if the cable is plug into some recepticle to shorts a pin or applies power across one of the extra 2 pins. I'm sure an electrical engineer could find the parts and build an appropriate cable. I really don't think that this should be required for a produciton machine that has been on sale for 4-6 months and is still on sale today. And if that sort of cable failed and cause a short or whateever, I'm sure that the warranty would be void. This sad state makes this tablet bordering on useless if you plan to travel at any time with it. Loose the cable or have it break and you can simply throw the tablet away in no more than 8 hours. Same is true for the adapter, but at least you can spend $40 + tax and get one of those from the onine store; assuming your cable still works. Very sad.
