The overnight maintenance scripts and permissions errors

I know that the weekly script modifies some permissions when it runs and then disk utility finds them and repairs them. I saw this one this time:
2008-09-20 20:53:44 -0400: Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
2008-09-20 21:00:28 -0400: Permissions differ on "Library", should be drwxrwxr-t , they are drwxrwxr-x .
2008-09-20 21:00:43 -0400: Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
2008-09-20 21:00:43 -0400: Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x .
The Library one I am not use to seeing. I wonder if the 10.5.5 update changed something.
Note however, I ran the microsoft office 12.1.2 update before running this one two macbook pros (that are exactly the same). Only one macbook pro had this library thing, but, it hasn't run the weekly script yet either..
anyone "in the know" know about this library thing?

Well, I did the 10.5.5 update, ran Repair Permissions afterwards, and did not see /Library error. My /Library is drwxrwxr-t, as it is evidently meant to be. I believe the final "x" on directories is replaced with a "t" to mean that only the owner of files in that folder can delete them. I think it quite possible that it was changed to the more usual x by the the MS Updater. If so, the Repair Permissions process put it back to what it is supposed to be.

I purchased Adobe Acrobat Pro XI for my iMac (Mavericks 10.9.4), downloaded it and have attempted to install it 10 or more times. I have done all the usual maintenance steps (repair permissions, repair disk, etc) and it still won't install. All goes well until the installer gets to "Running Package Scripts" then it stalls or hangs up and does not finish the installation. It runs and runs and runs. It never finishes. I wind up having to force quit the installer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Hi jtento ,
Kindly enable the Root Account for the MAC and then try the installation there (in the root account). Please find below the URL to enable the root account.

  • Releasing authorization for maintenance order and permit.

    Hi,experts,

    Hiii
You can create two seperate Authorization role using PFCG transaction code. Assign it to particular users & control the authorization. Use Following procedure.
    1. Transaction code PFCG will take you on screen role creation screen.
    2. Give authorization for IW32 transaction code in that block authorization according to business transaction for BFRE. This business operation is made for order release.
For permit there is seperate option is available for permits also.
If you have any issue, pl. be free to ask question.

  • Mac OS X maintenance scripts and multiple user accounts

    Hi everyone
Just wondering how the default maintenance scripts scheduled to run in the early morning works with multiple user accounts. Our Macs at home all have multiple user accounts (one for each of us) and I'm wondering whether the scripts work their magic across all accounts (assuming the computer itself is switched on AND not asleep).
Also, is the behaviour the same regardless of Mac OS X version? More specifically we're using snow leopard, lion, mountain lion, and maybe shortly mavericks.
    Thanks!
    Joe.

The maintenance scripts run by periodic perform system tasks. They do nothing in a user's account (unless you modify the scripts or create your own). They are primarily designed for long lived systems (servers). There isn't any magic nor would a normal mac users find any differences whether they ran or not.
In all the operating system versions that you mention, the scripts will run when the computer wakes, assuming that the computer was turned on before the prescribe times.

  • How to find the system default scripts and prompts in UCCX 8.0

    Hello everyone,
I have a bit of experience in UCCX 6.0 and just began to use UCCX 8.0. There's a question that where can I find the system default scripts and prompts in 8.0? In 6.0, I can find them in installing directory, but 8.0 is linux based so I can not do that in same way.
    Thanks.

You can Login to CLI with either root access or remote user access and get default scripts by going to
    CD /opt/cisco/uccx/Scripts/system/default
At this point you have to connect to ftp server and move these default script to yoru FTP server.
    I hope this helps

  • Overnight maintenance scripts

I am a big fan of MacJanitor as it is simple, uses what is already built in to Tiger, and does mess with any settings. I do shut down my mac overnight.
1.) If one doesn't use a 3rd party app to run these tasks, wasn't there an OS update that addressed something to the effect that if those files become to large or they haven't run, something will trigger them?
2.) Has anyone heard if the next OS version will finally allow some way to control this or perform them via built in Apple software?
    Thanks!

baltwo wrote: "1) Yes. IIRC, the 10.4.4 update fixed the OS so that if the scheduled tasks didn't run at their scheduled time, they'd run when the machine restarted (or awoke from sleep)."This is wholly incorrect.
See my "Running the Mac OS X Maintenance Scripts" FAQ for all the advice you need on the scripts. In particular, the section "How the scripts are launched on a schedule" discusses the timer behavior under Tiger that have lead some to believe — incorrectly — that the scripts run "off schedule."

  • Org.clamav.freshclam and permissions error on freshclam.log

This is an adjunct to a branched discussion in this thread regarding org.clamav.freshclam continually generating error reports in the system log.
After enabling, but not starting, Mail service on my server (XServe Dual-G5, 10.5.8 Server) my system log began filling with the error as per the referenced thread. The first entry when the error cropped up was:
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam): Unknown key for integer: Iterations
Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 org.clamav.freshclam[40472]: ERROR: Incorrect argument format for option --checks (-c)
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 org.clamav.freshclam[40472]: ERROR: Can't parse command line options
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam[40472]): Exited with exit code: 1
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
Per the instructions in the referenced thread, I ran
    launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.clamav.freshclam.plist
I then used pico to edit the org.clamav.freshclamplist file, removing the space between the '-c' and value in the line:
    <string>-c 4</string>
I also edited the /etc/freshclam.conf file to change the value:
    #DatabaseMirror db.XY.clamav.net
    to
    DatabaseMirror db.us.clamav.net
    I then ran
    freshclam -v
    followed by
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.clamav.freshclam.plist
Checking the log again, not only had the original error continued whilst I was editing, but also on the relaunch of freshclam a new error cropped up:
    Nov 7 08:35:39 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[127] (org.clamav.freshclam): Unknown key for integer: Iterations

    Nov 7 08:35:49 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[127] (org.clamav.freshclam): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
(Note: after the first 'Exited with exit code: 1' entry, it only repeated the last four lines as above as it respawned.)
Checking the ownership / permissions on the freshclam.log file showed that the owner/goup was _clamav:admin and the permisions were -rw-r----- which is proper and in line with the other clamav files in the directory. Thinking that perhaps the logfile was corrupted, I deleted it and made a new one, setting the owner, group and permissions as per the original. The log errors continued.
    Finally, in desparation, I ran
    chmod 660 /var/log/freshclam.log
setting the permissions to -rw-rw---- and the errors ceased!
Now, this is not proper file permissions nor does it explain why freshclam suddenly could not append the logfile, but freshclam is now happily churning away without generating continuous log error entries. For the moment, I am not going to argue with successful results!

    Hi Fred,
interesting.. but I'm of the mind "If it ain't broke.." and it has been running without problem since applying the fix. I may end up having to migrate Mail services to a different server soon though, so I'll keep it in mind if the error crops up again. Thanks for the tip!

  • Using automater to run the daily maintenance scripts

I like to put my computer to sleep over night but the problem is that when I do that it doesn't run the maintenace scripts. Does anyone know how to do this with automater so that I can quickly run it before I put my powerbook to sleep?

    Derek
I have my iMac go to sleep after an hour of non-use so it is shut down all night, usually.
I downloaded the freeware program Anacron which runs the cron daily, weekly and monthly processes automatically when you wake your computer. I never have to worry about maintenance that way.

  • Macbook will not start after sharing and permissions error

I was cleaning around my files and went into the info of my Mac.
I clicked get info on the desktop icon and accidently messed up the sharing and permissions settings.
My computer would not let me into my Mac icon on my desktop, saying I didn't have certain permissions.
I tried restarting and now my Macbook will not startup. It turns on and loads, but never goes past that.
I removed the battery and placed it back in but it is not working still.
    Thanks for the help guys!

  • When do the perodic maintenance scripts run?

In previous versions of OS X, we could see at what time the scripts were running by looking the files:
    com.apple.periodic-daily.plist
    com.apple.periodic-weekly.plist
    com.apple.periodic-weekly.plist
In fact I had a script for that:
    cd  /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    PLISTBUDDY=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy
    $PLISTBUDDY -x -c "Print :StartCalendarInterval" com.apple.periodic-daily.plist
    $PLISTBUDDY -x -c "Print :StartCalendarInterval" com.apple.periodic-weekly.plist
    $PLISTBUDDY -x -c "Print :StartCalendarInterval" com.apple.periodic-weekly.plist
But is Mavericks, the content of these files have changed and the time is missing. Here is an example of the new files:

Does anybody know where we can set the times for these scripts? The purpose is to allow the iMacs to sleep at night.

There is no need for that. Unlike traditional *NIX OS's that run these jobs using cron, OS X now uses launch daemons to run these (& many other) jobs. The benefit is a cron job won't run if the computer is asleep or powered down at the time set for a job, while ones started by launch daemons are queued up & run the next time the computer is awake.
For more about this, see page 12 of the Mavericks Core Technology Overview pdf. (Also maybe check out the Timer Coalescing discussion beginning on page 8.)
The battery, priority, & other key/value pairs in the plists insure that the maintenance tasks will run only when they have the least impact on performance & power consumption.
If you want to see when they have run you can use Console to look at the daily.out, weekly.out, & monthly.out logs (in the /var/log section). You should see that they do not run at fixed times, nor should they.
