The Patch Tool

Hi,
I am using the patch tool to patch (!) areas of an image.  Instead of patching the selection into the image, PS4 blends it, so that some of the patch and some of the original image are visible.  I've searched for a way to instruct PS4 to reduce the opacity but I can't find such an option.  Is it possible to truly 'patch' and not 'blend' an area of an image?
Thanks for you help!

Sorry...I only come here when having problems.   I read more than post.   ...most problems have already been resolved before I get here.
No so this one.
I just this moment went back to my old workstation.
ABIT IS7     Windows XP SP3   RADEON 9600 graphigs Card
ADOBE CS3 10.0.1
The Patch Tool blends perfectly...
On this workstation.. my New one.
ASUS P5B Deluxe  with E6600 & 8gig  Ram   RADEON HD 3870 X2
Windows Ultimate SPK2  64bit
I have both CS3  10.0.1  &  CS4 11.0.1    installed
Both exibit a failure to blend properly ...as priviously mentioned in this thread.
Again...I am back to my original thinking that it  is a Hardware Related issue..and needs exploring
In my humble opinion,  It would be good to poll those having issues and see.

  • CS4 and the patch tool

After using the patch tool in CS4 I am unable to use the clone tool without closing photoshop and restarting it. Any ideas why this is happening?

    Have you deselected the Selection?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance etc.)?

  • Where is the patch tool in Elements 13?

Have they removed the patch tool in Elements 13?

Elements had never had the patch tool, only full photoshop. PSE has the healing brush, the spot healing brush, content-aware move, and content-aware fill and you should be able to use one of those instead.

  • Proper Use of the Healing Brush & Patch Tool

When using the Patch tool and Healing Brush tool to smooth skin, I cannot seem to avoid "grabbing" dark coloring from the clothing as I get close to the edge of the skin.  I have the sample source anchored in the middle of an area far away from the clothing edge, but if I get close to the clothing it pulls from that color and "bleeds" into my healing area.
I've tried to view tutorials on the Healing Brush, but haven't found anything that addresses this specific condition, just standard "how to" stuff.
Thank you for any advise and direction here.

I'll give you a little trick as you can see the preview of the are you are patching it is possible to do a patch clone sort to speak.
    it works like this.
    http://mysite.verizon.net/wzphoto/patch.mov
if the angle of the clothes do not match you can copy a section and paste and then rotate the section to match and use it as the source for
    the patch tool.
BTW the idea is that you have to include the contrasting areas so the do not cause a blending. even if the darker area needs no repair.

  • How can i remove the measurement info bubble from displaying while using patch tool?

When removing unwanted parts of an image or repairing older images, the tool most used by me is the patch tool. When I select a patch and move a bubble with measurements of how far I've moved this patch pops up and ALWAYS seems to be in the way. Some areas to repair are extremely magified and can make or break an image looking natural or not. The darn measurement bubble seems to place itself in the worst possible location for exact placement of small elements. How can I turn this info bubble from popping up as I'm not why it's even there?

You can turn it off under Photoshop (Edit)>Preferences>Interface by setting Show Transformation Values to Never

  • In Photoshop CS4- using patch tool-

I select an area I want to repair, click source, then drag to the area I want to use to make the repair and release. It looks great in the preview, before I release. As soon as I release it disappears.
For example, after using the automate tool to combine multiple images into a panarama with a transparent background there are a few blank areas. I select one of the blank areas with the patch tool, click source then drag to the area I want to use as the replacement and release. As soon as I release, it goes back to the transparent background. The transparent button is NOT selected.
This is a Windows Vista system, with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video, If I try to do updates to CS4 is sas it is using the latest driver. Which it lists as version 11.0.2.
Any idea how to fix this?

In photoshop cs4 the patch tool doesn't work on transparent areas.
In other words the area has to be opaque (not transparent)
If they are small areas you might try the Healing Brush Tool.
Or use the healing brush tool and/or clone stamp tool and then patch the area with the patch tool.

  • Need help with Patch Tool in CS5

I am having a problem using the patch tool in Photoshop CS5. I click on the Patch Tool and select the Source option from the upper tool bar. Then I circle a gray area in the background of my photo and, holding down the left mouse button, I drag the selection to a black area in the background and release the mouse button. Instead of turning the selected area black it just makes the area slightly darker than it was originally. I just don’t understand why I can’t use the patch tool and any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much for these suggestions. Robert

  • Contents copied with "patch tool" disappear

I am having trouble with the "patch tool" . . .
Whether I use it in "Normal" or "Content Aware" mode, the patches that are made disappear after I make the patch.
For example, I am copying a portion of a uniform that has lines.  I want to copy the lines to another part of the uniform to make it appear as one.
I use the "patch" tool to draw around the area.  I then move the stylus pen over the area I wish to copy, and the preview within the circle shows the "addition" to look fine.
But as soon as I release the "patch" tool, Photoshop "thinks" for a few seconds (as signified by a "spinning wheel"-type cursor) . . . then it stops "thinking," and the contents of the patch area disappear.  Although they were there as a preview, they disappear when I release the "patch" tool after completing the copy.
What am I doing wrong?  TIA for any help . . .

    Thanks, Brian . . .
I had already watched this video (and I agree it is a good tutorial) . . .
The problem is I am looking for a "troubleshooter" answer, for when the tool does not work, and this video does not address that . . .
I have found a number of tutorials on how to use the video, but they are all based on the assumption that it works (which I am assuming it usually does) . . .
I am looking for a clue as to why it doesn't work but can't find anything . . . thanks for your help, though . . .

  • Patch Tool Missing Mouse Pointer...

    WIERD
While using the patch tool, it's patching about 2-3 inches to the left of my mouse pointer, ONLY on one image that I'd adjust the Exposure and Sharpening of. Others are patching normally.

I am now having this exact issue. The spot or patch area is to the left of the dropped circle. At first I thought that it simply wasn't working, until I noticed the spot over to the left.
Don't use this tool much, but I do know it used to work fine before. Is this a Leopard issue?

  • Patch Tool problem

Here are two examples of using the Patch Tool. On left is the original and rthe other using the P/Tool is the results. What can be done about this?
Secondly, is there any way in CS6 to 'move and re-align' such things as the knife and spoon?
    Thanks for your time.

    Thanks Howard,
I took your advice, but as you can see, no difference at all  Q. Can this be done  in ANY graphic program?

  • Patch tool just blends, doesn't replace

I've seen tutorials about the patch tool, but my patch tool doesn't appear to do what the tutorials do...
I've read other threads about how this tool is supposed to blend near the edges to give a good result, but this is blending the whole thing.  I've already deleted my prefs file by starting photoshop with ctrl alt shift pressed.  I've also reset the tool.  These screenshots were taken immediately after opening photoshop cs4 and deleting the prefs file.  Can anyone tell me what to do to use the patch tool like it's shown?  I'm not as interested in alternate methods to achieve the same result -- I've already used the clone stamp tool to do the job.  But why doesn't my patch tool seem to work the way it should?

Curt Y - there are two options for the patch tool 'source' and 'destination'. You seem to be confused
Bruderbell, the patch tool works this way - it analyses areas OUTSIDE the selected area to make its decisions as to what to use to replace texture and color. Because your area it on the edge of the canvas, the only pixel data it has are your dark pixels. Its working correctly
To sort out your problem, start with the Clone Tool, make a loose clone over of the dark area. Then use the healing brush  or the patch tool to make the transitions smoother, and eiliminate any tonal errors.  With a little practice you will be able to achieve a perfect heal this way

  • Problem with CS5 patch tool

Hi, I have this annoying problem with the patch tool that whenever I use it, i.e., drag the selected area to a new location it pastes the selected area as if it were smudged, such as feathered, and I practically can't use it. I have checked the selection and it is not feathered, but still, the selection being pasted is smudged. Any settings that I am not aware of?
    Thanks.

The Patch (content aware) tool is affected by the area around your selection. To get around the problem, make a selection of the beak and he surround without the bird and put it on a separate layer as shown here. Then select the beak and apply the Patch command. Without the dark bird for reference, you will get the result you want.

  • Is there a new patch tool in CC 2014?

I find the patch tool won't work now unless I hold it over the destination area for a pause and then let it go. Is something wrong or is this a change made by design? It's taking twice as long to use the tool and it's driving me insane.

What program are you talking about?

  • Screen goes blank when using Patch tool

The only information I've been able to find on this issue thus far was a post that was written during the Photoshop CS6 beta period at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4285375
I am using the final released Photoshop CS6 software, not beta, and am having the same issue with the Patch tool. I start to drag around an area to make a selecton, and the screen goes blank so that I can't see where I'm making the selection. When I release the mouse, the image appears again. Another problem which may be related is that sometimes when I zoom in, the screen goes blank. Closing Photoshop and re-launching it usually fixes the problem, but is an annoying time-waster. I have the most current update from the Cloud for Photoshop CS6, 13.1.2.X64.
Does anyone know a fix for this?

RAM is 12 GB. I'm not sure which numbers are relevant for VRAM and scratch drive, but this is what I found for video card properties:
Total Available Graphics Memory: 2809 MB
    Dedicated Video memory: 1024 MB
    System Video Memory: 0 MB
    Shard System Memory: 1785 MB

  • Moire whe using patch tool or blur filters

I got hold of a Pentax 645Z recently and did a few shoots with it. When I was trying to clean up the background using the patch tool something weird happened - instead if getting the smooth finish I am used to, it resulted in wavy patterns. I tried the healing brush and blur tools and got the same effect, as you can see in the photo.
Does anyone have an idea what causes this and what I could do to smooth things out
    Thanks
    David

That is shadow banding. Are you working in 8 bit or 16 bit? Some see an improvement when working in 16 bit.
