The Phone you want on the network you want

So, I saw a Verizon Wireless commercial on TV last night. I don't remember the exact wording but it was something like this, "The phone you want on the network you want." I don't remember which phone was advertised, but I believe it was for the iPhone.
So, Verizon which is it, the phone I want or the phone you want to carry? I want a next generation Windows Phone device. Give us more selection so that we don't have to move to another network.
So what is the truth here, the phone I want or the phone you want to offer .................................................

It is a problem. In Europe all carriers are unified and uses one specific standard.  The laws allows all devices to be unlocked or be able to be unlocked within 2 months of purchase to work anyway period no ands ifs or buts.  That would change everything going forward.  The FCC would rather milk spectrum licensing vs. making it a standard and make less money.
In the end it will always be about the money, and honestly FCC is more anti-competitive than AT&T trying to buy T-Mobile will ever be for example.

    Hi sunnylordz,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you have no service on the iPhone. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. There is one step you did not mention trying that i think is worth trying.
If you see No Service in the status bar of your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
Remove the SIM card. If the SIM card is damaged, worn, or bent, or if it's too big or small for the SIM tray, contact your carrier for a new one. Then reinsert the SIM card.
    Cheers,
    Mario

  • Dialog Box: Select the network you want to join...

I just installed updates from mac that required restart. Upon restart I have a screen asking me to select the network I want to join with the following choices. ANDM2 (with a lock beside it), fortress1 (w/lock beside it) , linksys and XVU83 (with lock)
then I can select one and join or cancel. What is this? I have a mac on a cable internet connection. Thanks for any help.

That's a wireless dialog. If you aren't using Airport wireless then turn off Airport either from the menu bar status item or using Network preferences.

Hello, my name is brad and I recently had a voicemail app that I was using and now i got rid of it. But now my voicemail for the phone will not work. I tried to reset the network settings and nothing happened. I was wondering if you could help me out?

When you set up a voicemail redirection, usually you have to remove that redirection from the account that redirected it.  Like Google Voice, if you activate Google Voice to receive your voicemail, you will have to log into voice.google.com to turn it off.  If you contact your carrier, they can tell you exactly what program has taken over your voicemail functionality just in case you are stuck, but if you know the name of that App, I'm sure you will be able to figure it out.  Hope this helps you out.

My phone is locked on the network I want to know and decoded

Only the carrier it's locked to can unlock it. contact them. If you don't know what carrier that is, ask whoever you got it from or call AppleCare and give them the serial number.

    Hi ChrisBell,
my Pixi shows me the missed calls in a list of its own? I don't have many, so maybe I'm missing something. But I agree with your half-ranting to some degree. As a long-time Palm-user (my last phone was a Treo 680, terrible form factor, good UI), I am really disappointed with the standard software on this phone. Memos and Tasks, which AFAIK were there and useful even on the first Newton's, have regressed beyond the point of usefulness now (solution: Toodledo and Done!, at least for now).
But ChrisBell: if you feel up for it, you could start tinkering. Many people love these phones so much they have started developing patches to solve the obvious problems skimmed over by developers. Try looking up "webosquickinstall" and "preware", and you will find over 300 patches and a lot of free software to help you out. I am not a computer wizard myself, but I am not scared of them either, and I have been able to make good use of all these extras made available by the community.
just a thought, might help you out on a few of your half-rants

  • There is no SIM card in the phone you are attempting to activate message??

I got a replacemnt 4S from Apple and when I plug it into iTunes I keep getting There is no SIM card in the phone you are trying to activate message. Why is this happening? This didn't happen with my first phone that I got from Verizon.

actually, there should be a sim card in the slot.  It will not have been activated, but it should be there.  just open it up and check.  also...be careful about where you are traveling internationally, especially if you are using data.  A few countries (not most, about 40...many in Asia and South America) use both CDMA and GSM.  on your 4s you do not have an option to choose what Network System you want to use (GSM, CDMA, AUTO etc).  On my recent trip to Venezuela, my 4s only grabbed CDMA which left me without email, web and texting...not good for a business trip.  After several hours on the phone with Verizon, I discovered that they are pushing an update to all Verizon 4s phones (not sure if it is ALL 4s phones or just those that have had their sims activated).  Was told the PRL version number for this is 52638 (a number which is outside the range of the November PRL listings).  what happened to me was either 1) my phone was never pushed this PRL (the push happens on Mondays and Tuesdays), or my phone may have been pushed the update but if *228 is pressed, that will overwrite the PRL so you are out of luck!  in any event, if you are traveling to one of these countries and you want data, be sure you not only activate your sim, but that you have the proper PRL in your phone.  Remember, until they come up with a permanent fix, don't do another *228 once you have this update!!

  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

  • How do you setup the network connection on an ipod 4th gen?

  • ERROR: The network you selected cannot be extended

I just bought a new Airport Extreme duel-mode router, and I want to use it to extend my network. I go to the wireless settings, and choose to "Extend A Network" then I choose the network that I want to extend. The problem is that when I selected the network I get an error "The Network You Chose Cannot Be Extended." There are some other networks (open and closed) around me, so I tried to extend one of those and I got the same error every time. The part that is really odd to me is that I already have a airport express extending that same network without any problem. Any Ideas?

So there is no way of using the new Airport Extreme on a wireless network unless that network was created by another Airport Extreme? My goal here is just to use the Airport Extreme with my external HD to backup my laptops using Time Machine. For this to be effective the Airport Extreme needs to be on the same network through which I get internet... or else it is pointless (I would have to switch to an internet-less network to do the backups) Is there any way I can do this?

  • When using Network Utility, does Link Speed tell you the actual speed of the network?

I'm trying to see whether a power line adapter I installed in my home network is faster accessing the internet than the WiFi from my Time Capsule.
Using Apple's Network Utility, my power line/ethernet connection reads as being 1Gb/s, which is obviously much faster than the 130 Mb/s of the WiFi:
But are those the actual speeds my iMac is receiving, or are those just what the specs of the device I'm using should be receiving (as in "ideal, what-the-manufacturer claims the speed should be")?

Are you sure you only want to test internet speed?
Internet speed is affected by many factors that are beyond your control - it is also likely that the internet connection is one of the slowest parts of your network.
You may be on an ISP connection that has 'contention' e.g. a shared connection across many users - their use can effect what rates you get. You will probably see different rates for the time of day too. When everyone gets home & starts watching Netflix you can see drops in speed.
Powerline could be many times faster than the internet connection, in which case you will see no improvement because the bottleneck is not the local network - it's the internet.
To truly see if the powerline adaptors are faster you should take the internet out of the equation. It's fairly simple to do if you have a device on your network that supports file sharing. Ideally you would use another Mac connected via ethernet to the network (that should remain the same in all tests). A Time Capsule could be used if you can write data to a sharepoint.
Copy a large file onto that destination & time it.
    Repeat on wifi.
It's best to shutdown any background apps to be sure that other items are not hogging all the data transfer. Take many tests to get a decent average.
Divide the file size by the time taken to see a rough figure for the MB/s (MegaBytes per second) bear in mind that network transfer is usually measured in bits/second, so they won't be the same as the link speed figures.
This is generally smart enough to convert if you give it the correct units…

  • The Network You Selected cannot be extended. On AirPort Express N

    Hi there.
I have got a new AirPort Express N. I want to extened my AirPort Express V1 How can i do this with my New N Express.
    Thanks Luke

If you want to create a WDS, put both your Expresses, powered up, in the same room with you and your favorite computer. Launch Airport Utility and confirm it can see both.
    _For the Main station:_
Airport > Wireless > Wireless mode > Participate in a WDS network. The radio mode and channel will probably already get filled in for you, but if they don't, select Radio Mode > 802.11n (b/g compatible) and pick a channel that works for you. Make sure the wireless network name and security are the ones you want.
Click the WDS tab. Select WDS mode > WDS Main. Click to allow wireless clients.
Click the + button. Enter the MAC address of your remote base station. It's printed on the Express and resembles a bunch of numbers that look like 00:24:36:48:ab:cd (for instance). Be sure to type it in exactly.
    Click Update.
    _For the Remote station:_
Airport > Wireless > Wireless mode > Participate in a WDS network. Again, the radio mode and channel will probably already get filled in for you, but if they don't, select Radio Mode > 802.11n (b/g compatible) and pick the *exact same channel* as the main base station. The network name and security must also be *exactly the same as the main base station.*
Click the WDS tab. Select WDS mode > WDS Remote. Click to allow wireless clients.
Click the + button. Enter the MAC address of main base station. Again, *be sure to type it in exactly*.
    Click Update.
If everything went well, you will still be able to see both Expresses in Airport Utility. Unplug them and put them back in their original locations.
I think these instructions are complete. If I missed something you'll find the answer in the Designing Airport Networks I linked above.
If something didn't go well, you'll have to "hard reset" the recalcitrant Express and figure out what went wrong - this is the reason for putting them in the same room with you. It saves a lot of walking back and forth.

I can't send Imessage to my contact numbers it says "not delivered" when using 3G or LTE. I am using iphone 5c I tried to restart my iphone, remove the simcard, reset the network setting it didn't work. Please help. Thank you

    ACTIVATING FACETIME AND IMESSAGES
Activating Facetime and Imessages on your phone requires the ability to send SMS messages and depending upon where you are that might be an international SMS.  Check with your carrier to see if your plan supports sending of international SMS messages.  If you are having trouble activating Facetime or Imessages turn them both off on your device and reset the device (Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost)).  Wait for the device to restart and wait a minute and turn Facetime and imessage back on and wait for activation.  If that does not fix things read the following articles:

  • Can you not sync wirelessly with a desktop PC on a wired network, while your iPhone is on the network wirelessly??

Can you not sync wirelessly with a desktop PC on a wired network, while your iPhone is on the network wirelessly??

I also thought that this was the case, but that is incorrect.  Please see my previous post below:
I was having the same problem with an iPhone 4 and Windows XP.  I finally fixed the issue! I read several posts over the past month telling me to make sure that both the PC and iPhone were on the same network.  I thought that both were on the same network; however, I was using my "Guest network" to connect my iPhone to my Airport Base Station.  In order for both devices to be on the same network, the first 3 numbers of both IP addresses must match.  For example, if the PC's IP address is 199.167.1.X, the iPhone's IP address must be 199.167.1.Y.   I signed onto my password-protected network from the phone just to see what IP address it would use.  As soon as I logged on, my iPhone started to sync wirelessly.  I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but I would suggest comparing the IP addresses of your PC and iPhone before doing anything else.  For those posting that the PC and iPhone must be on the same Wireless network, my PC is hard-wired to the Airport Extreme and it still works!
    My Setup:
    iPhone 4 (running IOS 5.0.1)
Dell PC (running Windows XP SP3) (no wireless network card)
Airport Exteme Base Station (5th Generation & updated firmware)

  • W/ JB ...How do you  update a GNex connection to the network

I did search and REALLY can't find info on PRL settings and updating network connections, Verizon, can we have the proper link...or if removing and replacing the sim card updates the connection it's self, the link Jennifer just has inserting and removing sim card.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention! There's been a lot of updates to the Nexus and to the network lately. I've noticed the Perferred Roaming List (PRL) for the Nexus has recently changed, so we may just need to update that phone's connection to the network. You can see your current PRL Apps > Settings > About phone > Status. It's extremely easy to update the LTE devices, just follow the steps at http://bit.ly/znMW74 while on the Verizon Wireless network to reboot the SIM and the update will follow within a minute of the phone turning on.
Keep me posted if you're still having trouble seeing the roam indicator while you're connected to the Network Extender.
    Thank you

        Hi cynindesign,
Thanks for following up with us. The information Jennifer provided is correct. To update your PRL on your 4G phone, all you have to do is power off the phone, remove the back cover, battery and sim card for about one minute. Then re-insert the sim card, battery, back cover and power on your device. If there is an updated PRL available, the phone will automatically update within a minute of powering on the device.
    Thanks,
