I just installed OS X Yosemite on my MacBook. I now cannot get the computer to start up. If I hold down the power button to try and power it back up, it will not start. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Alternatively, see:

Choose the version you have installed now:
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X

Just tried installing an update to OSX Snow Leopard. Prior to trying to update OS, I was running V 10.6.3. During installation, it locked up. Although the screen tells me that the installation will be completed in less than one minute, that was two hours ago, and the computer won't permit me to shut it down via the power button, as I get an error sound. What do I do now? Help!
Hold the power key till it shuts down, it may take a little while, try holding it thru the warning.
Then if it shuts down restart and open Safari/Preferences, General tab, and set "Save Downloaded Files to:"
Select desktop, if desktop is not available in the the drop down menu, click other, then select Desktop from the column from the on the left.
Then download this:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
This will download the "stand alone installer"
Click on the installer pkg and follow the prompts.
Hope this helps -
MAJOR DEFICIENCY = WASTED MONEY:
I love the 6th Gen. iPod Nano but it has a major deficiency, the power button. I've bought 2 and they both have given me the same issue of the power button becoming slack and not functioning. Why is this so, and how can I fix it??Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
Good Luck - Cheers,
M. -
Customizing Cursor Color and/or appearance: Does anyone know if you can change cursor color in Mountain Lion? Any software for customizing and saving different cursors for Mountain Lion? Already have cursor size changed, but would like more options. Are more cursor customization options coming in future Mac OS X versions?
There may be some haxies/3rd party s/w that can do this, but I've not heard of them.
Customisation is limited on macs, unless you start hacking deep into the coreservices of the system - dodgy at best and almost certainly to get reset on the next update from Apple central
Think different? Nooo....that was just a slogan. -
I tried following the directions that I received about restoring my iPod touch. But there is one flaw. My power button is stuck and I am unable to turn it off. How can I go about either getting it fixed or restoring my iPod?
Easy, first make sure that the itunes on your computer is up to date. Next connect the ipod to your computer. If you have itunes 11.0 or above, wait until the device appears in the upper right hand side of the screen, or you can press ctrl-s, and the side menu will appear, and you can see more clearly the ipod appearing under the device category. Next simply click on the ipod and on the summary screen, you should see restore. Press restore, and you will see a dialog box asking to back-up & restore, restore only, or cancel. If you have information to save, press back-up & restore, if you want to wipe the device clean and start over, press restore. Once it's all done, you should be good.
If your ipod is less than a year old and not a refurbished device, contact Apple at 800-676-2775 for assistance on repair and replace. If you are near an Apple Store, go to http://www.apple.com/retail/ and find your local Apple Store and set-up a genius appointment and go in and have your device repaired or replaced. If your ipod is a refurbished device, it has to be 90 days old or less to be repaired or replaced for free.I hope this helps. -
Hi, when I press the power button on my MacBook nothing happens and it is driving me crazy If anyone knows how I can fix this problem, I will appretiate it very much
Thank youTry an SMC reset, which can often fix that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 . Note as you scroll down, there are two sets of directions for MacBooks, depending on whether you can remove the battery or not.

How do I get back what I lost. When I was forced to shut down my computer?
None of us knows why your screen turned black - it's the most serious form of crash, and yes, almost all the changes that you didn't save are lost.
An exception are the audio recordings - they should still sit in the project package of your song. Locate the project in the Finder, ctrl-click it and select "Show package content". The Media folder will contain all your recordings. -
My Ipad does not go off again, even after pressing the off button and re set, what can I do to switch the I pad off.
Try a reset a few more times.
Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo.
Data will not be affected. -
MBA keyboard not responding. SMC didn't work.
If the USB keyboard still works after you log in, then the machine needs to be repaired.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
The power button isn't working :(
The power button is loose and I can't get it to turn the ipod. I can get it to work fine if I plug it in first so the problem is just the button.
If it is an iPhone 5 try holding the left side of the button down very hard. That Power Button Issue which can render the button totally unusable typically goes bad in an uneven way allowing some function in the way I described. You can use Assistive Touch under Accessibility to power the phone down.

The power button will not press, it's stuck
The power button will not press, it's stuck. I need help.
Believe it or not, if the power button is not related to a more serious issue. You can take it to an Apple Store, remember to set a genius appointment at http://www.apple.com/retail/, and get it unstuck for free, or call 800-676-2775 for help. If its more of an issue, they will tell you at the store and how much it will cost to repair if your device isn't under warranty. Also, you can trade it in for credit toward a new ipod touch. Hope this helps.

i hit the power button on top and my screen light i just cant see my background or swipe my phone to answer cause i can not see the screen
you can try turning it off and on again, but i doubt that's gonna work, that sounds like more of a hardware issue. Your best bet may be to contact apple and seek service or replacement

my ipod touch is frozen... the screen has a picture of the itunes logo and a usb charger. I have held the sleep button and the power button to reset and i have let the battery die and started to recharge...niether worked. any ideas???
Try charing it to 50% at least.
If all else fails, try putting it in DFU mode. Connect it to iTunes, (iTunes may not detect the device, but that's ok) hold the power and home buttons down for 10 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the home button until it goes into DFU mode. iTunes should detect it and ask for a restore.
