The quality of streaming a live recorded feed

Hello,
I'm asking this as a general post in regards to the quality of streaming video a flash based app provides. When you compair it to say the Flash Media Live Encoder, it's compression of the camera is terrible. Is there ever going to be something that is able to compress the video better and give a greater experience?

Netflix is very tight-lipped about the algorithms used to determine your streaming quality. It is supposed to automatically determine your bandwidth and deliver the highest quality video. I doubt you will get a satisfactory answer from Netflix, who will probably blame your ISP.

Streaming live webcam feed to website - what is the problem ?

Ok, first of all hello everyone - i searched this on the forum and come up with couple of solutions which i already did so hopefully someone can answer my question.
I have installed flash media server, flash cs5, media live encoder to be able to view my webcam feed via my website. Now in addition to these, i started streaming to localhost, and installed a dns updater which updates a name server according to my current ip. Then i wrote this dns address in the feed's source from flash 5 as rtmp://thednsname.somedns.net/live/livestream
so far so good, i also forwarded the ports 1935 incoming and outgoing from modem to my computer as well (because 1935 is said to be the default port number for media server). firewall -> closed (just in case); and my internet provider doesn't block ports...
started the media server (with admin privilage in 7), started the live encoder, connect to localhost, start live feed.
NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound : Adobe Flash tried to play a live or recorded stream that does not exist. Source can't be found.
I DONT get this error, which means it finds a stream but on the website there is absolutely nothing. Any ideas will be much appreciated, i think i'm running out of steam here...

If I am not wrong, you said that you are publishing a livestream and wanted to see the "NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound : " error on client-side whenever you fail to play a stream, right? so, basically it depends upon what value of the argument "starttime" are you using in your netstream.play call @ client side code, as it follows that:
startTime - A number indicating the playback start time, in seconds. If no value is specified, the value is -2. If startTime is -2, the server tries to play a live stream with the name specified in streamName . If no live stream is available, the server tries to play a recorded stream with the name specified in
streamName . If no recorded stream is found, the server creates a live stream with the name specified in streamName and waits for someone to publish to that stream. If startTime is -1, the server attempts to play a live stream with the name specified in streamName and waits for a publisher if no specified live stream is available. If startTime is greater than or equal to 0, the server plays the recorded stream with the name specified in streamName , starting from the time given. If no recorded stream is found, the play() method is ignored. If a negative value other than -1 is specified, the server interprets it as -2. This parameter is optional.
This also means, you will get "NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound : " error on client-side if you are using 0 because in that case it will directly look for a recorded video file with the given name and will not wait for publisher to publish a livestream with that name and therefore will immediately return the string error "NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound : ".

Possible? Live SDI feed recorded straight into timeline. In the same way as Voice Over does.

Im not sure if this feature exists but its definitely technically capable and would revolutionise the way I work and I'm sure lots of others.
I'm a music video director and the majority of the time work with take after take of performances.
Basically - in the exact same way the 'Voice Over' tool works but with a live video feed via SDI using a thunderbolt adapter.
And in a more complicated way -
What I'd like to be able to do is to have an FCP project open with the master audio in place.
Then, whilst camera connected via SDI, hit play in the timeline (so band hear playback audio for sync) and let FCP record the live picture coming in. Then upon cutting, a new clip would be placed directly on the timeline at the correct time to the sync of the music.
Then for each take after that, it would create a new layer/track so it builds up these takes.
One major benefit here rather than just having immediate sync would be that we could start playback and record at any point in the song and then be able to quickly check if it works with whatever else is happening in the edit.
MANY MANY thanks if anyone can help with this.

Do you understand what I mean about being able to play the timeline and record into at the same time? Instantly see how the various 'takes' look and even being able to see how it looks when it cuts into the next/precious clip. Would be great no?

How to check whether a stream a live or recorded video in FMS?

I don't find such API to indicate whether a stream is live or not.
Anyone knows how to judge this,either by client side or server side actionscript?

According to the definition of stream.time, I don't think we can distinguish a live stream from a recorded stream by that.
Stream.time
myStream.time
Read-only; the number of seconds the stream has been playing. This value is the timestamp of the latest frame that flowed out of the stream.
That said,in both cases,myStream.time will keep increasing.

I was able to modify the main.asc file in the application/livepkgr directory to include:

I get three status messages in the FLME encoding log:
Requested DVR command has been successfully issued to Primary FMS server for stream livestream1

Please prefix 'mp4:' to the stream name to record H264/AAC/HE-AAC encoded data at FMS using DVR feature
Now I have a few issues:
1. How to I fix the issue with the 3rd status message "Please prefix 'mp4:' to the stream name to record H264/AAC/HE-AAC encoded data at FMS using DVR feature" since the code above is prefixing the "mp4:" to the stream name.
2. In the applications/livepkgr/streams directory there is a file called "undefined.f4v" which is telling me the code above isn't passing the info.streamname variable.
3. Also, what do I need to do to playback this .f4v file. I've tried opening it with Adobe Media Player, but it doesn't recognize it.
I'm obviously using multi-bitrate streaming and that is working flawlessly. My goal is to record this livestream to later playback as an mp4 file.
Any ideas?
UPDATE:
I know on page 15 of the FMS 4.5.1 developers guide, "Configure DVR (HDS)" under "Publish a DVR stream", it states "To Publish a DVR stream from FLME, DO NOT check Record OR check DVR Auto Record. Publish the stream just as you publish any live stream. In the next section "Play DVR streams" is states that I can use SMP (Stobe Media Playback), which I am. So that brings up two more questions:
1. Why is my SMP Player not displaying the DVR funtionality (See image):
In my SMP configuration, my streamType is "LiveOrRecorded" - default. There is a streamType = "dvr", but will I lose live funtionality?
2. If I want to later on, package the stream into an mp4 file and play it back later for those who missed the live stream, what is the best approach for that?

Two things: You need to have "DVRCast" application on server-side i.e. "dvrcast_origin" for DVR recording to work and secondly for mp4 recording your stream name should be "mp4:<streamname>.mp4" while publishing.

Garageband: All of a sudden, the QUALITY of my recorded sounds went trashy.

First, I know that most of y'all would recognize this kind of question as one from who isn't familiar about sound effects or pitch control, etc.
But I've been making music for quite a time and have been using those effects very constantly,
so I would have already known the answer if that was the problem.
The thing is..
I had to hid my mic and audio interface from my aunt's kids who visited at my place.
I was afraid they would touch or break those, so I separated the sets and hid those in my closet.
After they were gone, when I re-setup my recording tools and tried to record a new song, my voice sounded so weird.
It was not something from pitch control or any sound effects that garageband has.
Yes, it sounded like my voice, but it was like the quality was downgraded.
I don't even get how I should explain the sound.
The sound was like my mic would accept my lower tone of my voice only. (I checked the pins on the mic and still wouldn't go back to normal)
I tried re-setting up the whole thing again and again but the result was the same; The sound wouldn't come back to that normal, clear sound.
Question:
Would this be a problem of Garageband? Perhaps I clicked something random?
Or would it be a problem of my mic which was in the cold closet for about a week? (I use Avantone CK-6)
I need some advice from professionals...

Are you asking about GarageBand on a Mac or GarageBand on iPad/iPod/iPhone?
If you are asking about GarageBand '11 on your Mac - can you drag the "end-of-song" marker (the little magenta colored triangle) at the top of the time line? Then try to drag it back to the left.
Can you drag the zoom slider below the track heads in the time line?or is that unresponsive too?
If you cannot move the end-of -song marker and not zoom in again, I'd try HangTime's "oddball probs" fix and trash the GarageBand preferences files - see the FAQ:

We use FMS 4.5.1 for streaming MP4 (H264/AAC) live streams to flash clients and iPads. Occassionally iPad viewers get error messages indicating that the video cannot be played. On these occasions we see error messages like this in our Apache logs:
mod_hlshttp [500]: Invalid timestamp found in the message while processing /hls-live/streams/rd-mp4/events/noordoostpolder_1/liveevent/livestreamNum4390.ts
Strangely enough this error message cannot be found anywhere in Adobe's documentation or anywhere else on the net (or perhaps I haven't searched well enough...)
Has anyone else here encountered this problem and/or does anyone have an idea as to what causes these messages and this problem?

The latest headlines...live feeds not loading. the news has not updated since I updated to firefox 7.0.1. any suggestions on this...?

The list of current news...latest headlines has not changed in the last 3-4 days. at the top of the headlines list is a muted message that says "live bookmark feed failed to load" This problem coincides with my updating to firefox 7.0.1. Is there a suggestion for a resolution? thanks Regie

Hey dude, I think I can help u out. Ok you are looking to increase the quality of recording with your photo corect? then I have the solution for you. If you get linux on ur iPod, you can easily record from 8KHz to 96KHz.....that is one tiny feature of linux on ur iPod, you can lok at photos, watch movies (movie player is very premature), play doom, space invaders, chess, and a bunch more games on ur iPod for free. To get to the dowload for the 4G/Mini/Photo download page, go to Kainjow.com, then go to "Software", then click "Freebies", then click "4G iPodLinux Installer". Then download it, and install. Its simple, you select what iPod will have linux installed to it, click "ok" and you wate 3 minutes, and your done.
I must tell you, for Photo, Mini, and 4G iPods, it isn't suported if any happens. If you back up your iPod, you should be fine though. The only risk to putting linux on your iPod is the chance of wiping it clean of what you have stored on it, which is very rare, but possible. I put it on my Mini with no problem, and my mini is perfect

Some years ago I built a simple remote controller by buying a cheap USB keyboard and throwing away the keys just keeping the controller chip with it's USB connection. This is determined by your carrier. SMS/MMS is a poor man's email and by that I mean SMS/MMS has major restrictions and limitations compared to email but is a cash cow for cell phone carriers.
Upload the video to YouTube when connected via wifi and send the YouTube link via text.
