The restore utility fails to find any Mac os backups on my time machine disks, but they are there. Any ideas?

The Time Machine utility seems to be backing up correctly. The backups appear when I open the backup disk, however, when I try to restore a backup, the utility correctly identifies any disks which contain Time Machine backup files, but when that disk is selected, the utility cannot find any actual backup files.
I have reinstalled the operating system, and repaired and rebuilt all the disks. Apple support suspects that I have a hardware a problem, in that the motherboard is incapable of communicating with some devices. It doesn't matter whether the backup files are on an internal disk, or an external USB drive.
It strikes me as a little weird that the utility knows which disk contain backup files, and will display those disk correctly within the utility, but cannot find any actual backup files, once a particular disk is selected within the utility.
The good news is I have three months to go on my AppleCare plan. The bad news is the closest repair facility is 65 miles away.
Any thoughts on this?

And I suspect all of the internal drives are WD, except the start up drive. BUT I also have the same issue if I use a Seagate External drive as my backup location.
What brand of HD would you recommend?

  • Can I restore a complete system to a bare external drive using my Time Machine disk?

My iMac hard drive appears to have gone "belly up"... no system disk found on boot up.   I have a current Time Machine external drive for this iMac.  Can I use the TM Disk to clone my old system onto a new EXTERNAL Disk.  (I have access to several other Apple computers that would allow me to boot an external disk... IF I can re-create the one that died.)
Thanks much for your thoughts and ideas.

You can use the TM backup to Restore it to another External drive.I wouldn't call it Cloning as that is something different than doing a Restore from TM backup. You'll ned to connect both drives to the system and boot the system from the original reinstall DVD that came with it. then there should be an option to restore your system from a TM backup and you would point it to the other external drive. You may want to use Disk utility first to partition and format that othr external Mac Extended (Journaled) before you try doing the restore.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
You can also try deleting all music by:
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • I dragged my tabs into the "Tab Group" button and now cant find those tabs but they are there in Firefox Home.

I probably did this wrong since i just started using Firefox, but i dragged a tab into the Tab Groups button on my tool bar and lost all of the tabs when viewing on my laptop. When viewing on my smartphone can still view them in Firefox Home, please help.

The app tabs feature is still in a relatively early stage of development. The option to remember app tabs independently of sessions has not yet been implemented, but it will be part of the release version of Firefox 4.

  • Migration Assistant fails to recognize a Time Machine disk (itself migrated using Disk Utility)

So I outgrow my Time Machine disk. I listen to the advice (repeated in multiple places) that one can simply use Disk Utility's Restore tab, select the old time machine disk as source and the new one as destination, and click restore to copy block-by-block, then rename the disk.
This works very well. I have indeed been able to use Time Machine on the new disk without losing any of the history.
But now I am in trouble. I am also outgrowing my MacBook disk. I put a larger disk in and install Snow Leopard from scratch. Now Migration Assistant does not recognize the new Time Machine disk (perpetually spinning wheel). Renaming the disk to the old name does not help. M.A. does recognize the old Time Machine disk, but that means manually managing the changes (and giving up on the larger TM disk). I reinstall Snow Leopard and do not miss that time the option to restore from Time Machine, but it still does not see the new Time Machine disk.
How does one convince Migration Assistant to use a Time Machine disk that duly has Backups.backupdb as a root folder and where "ignore ownership on this volume" is not set?

Thanks, Pondini, but the Time Machine disk passes the Disk Utility repairs and only the spinning wheel was visible under both the Setup Assistant and the Migration Assistant.
I now have some good news, and some bad.
First the good news: Lion's Migration Assistant offers the option to copy user (and other) files from the previous OSX disk, not just the Time Machine disk. If this option was already in Snow Leopard, then I missed it.
    Now the bad news..
I spent several hours reading (Pondini's and others') suggestions to ensure that my Time Machine is as seamless as possible, namely, for the next backup to be incremental. No luck: all user data are copied. Until the interface of Time Machine stops trying so hard to shield us naive users from making decisions on our own, one idea is to keep the iPod and pictures/video collection backed-up by the straight-forward rsync. Then whether Time Machine is really incremental will not matter, and in any case a spare copy of the documents you wrote by hand is nice in case the some blocks of the disk fail.
But I may have been the one who messed it. In Preferrences \ Time Machine \ Options... I excluded all users except the user "Admin" who restored the user accounts. The idea was to test first whether the mildest user will get a full backup. It may be that Time Machine does not look in the history to see if a given file or set of files already have some copy in the past. If a file does not exist in the very last backup, it is saved to the Time Machine disk.
If you're reading this and are keen on an incremental backup, try this: restore your user accounts using a user Admin, but do not start to backup until after the accounts are restored. Will the backup afterwards be incremental?

  • Time Machine, Disk Utility, and clearing out corrupted snapshots

Hi, all. I've been having some troubling issues with Time Machine and could use your collective insight.
I have a 500GiB external USB2 disk that I've been using for Time Machine since December (the oldest snapshot in Backups.backupdb is named 2007-12-13-222250). Everything worked fine until sometime in late January, when Time Machine decided to ax 2/3 of my Applications directory. Time Machine's logging is terse, so I wasn't able to determine what caused the corruption. The fact that this error wasn't caught and flagged by Time Machine bothers me.
Especially because I discovered this in the process of needing to recover from a crash on my laptop's hard drive -- I had to roll back to a previous, complete snapshot to get all my applications back.
After that I had to engage in some jiggery-pokery to get Time Machine to re-snapshot everything, but things proceeded normally until I received my new copy of DiskWarrior 4.1 last night (although DiskWarrior is an innocent bystander here). I tried to use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory on the Time Machine disk, but it failed before trying to write anything.
(For those who care: after some back and forth with Alsoft tech support, we determined this was likely because my Time Machine volume has 6.2GB of catalog data, and DiskWarrior works by rebuilding the directory in memory, so it has to be able to fit the whole catalog into virtual memory.)
I was a little paranoid that something might be wrong with the disk after that, so I fired up Disk Utility and told it to repair the disk. It churned for about 6 hours and repaired an extraordinarily large number of hardlink reference count errors, but completed by claiming that the disk had been repaired.
When I next told Time Machine to run, instead of copying over a couple GB of data like it usually does, it started copying 38GB! ***? I took a look at the previous Time Machine snapshots, and discovered that Disk Utility had totally corrupted every snapshot I'd made since last month's fandango. Most of the root-level directories in the snapshots now look like this:
    $ ls -al /Volumes/Time\ Machine\ Backups/Backups.backupdb/xxx.net/2008-03-13-025640/Euphrosyne/

That is clearly, completely wrong, and it alarms me that Disk Utility could cause so much damage to a Time Machine volume.
Since I also use SuperDuper! to regularly clone this disk, it's not as big a nightmare as it could be, but this means that I'm going to have to clear out every snapshot for the last month by hand, both because I obviously can't trust them anymore, and because I keep getting messages like this in the logs:

I'd like to keep the old snapshots if I can. What's likely to happen if I just go and clear out the b0rked backup sessions by hand?
(Hmm... it appears yes, because I just deleted them all and the disk didn't recover the freed space.)
Here's the important question: has anyone else had issues using Disk Utility on a Time Machine volume, and does anyone at Apple have any plans to add integrity checking to Time Machine? As it stands, I don't really feel like I can trust it in its present form, as convenient as it is...

I have trouble with disk utility on my new (1 TB Lacie) as well as on my old (500 GB WD) drive. After doing a backup, du tells me a never ending list of errors like
HasFolderCount flag needs to be set (id = 599567)
(it should be 0x10 instead of 0)
Everything was O.K. before doing the backup; so is the disk to be backupped, according to du.
Up to now, no other problem occurred, but I´d like to clear this issue before my trust in time machine is restored.

A Google search will return some hits; however, the best option would be to find an NI Alliance Member in a location you want to work. This is how I found my first LabVIEW job. Alliance members usually have a jobs page on their website, and most of them are looking for LabVIEW talent.

  • Two computers backed up on the same Time machine disk, one computer is dead. How to access data?

    Hi guys,
I backed up two different computers on the same time machine disk. Now, one of my computer is dead. I can see the backups on my time machine disk. How can I get the backup data that belongs to dead computer. When I enter time machine, I only have access to corresponding backup.  I do not want to  destroy the backups. My timemachine backup structure looks like below:
    -->Backups.backupdb
         -->Computer-1
         -->Computer-2
Now, my Computer-1 is dead, and I am using Compter-2. If possible I wan to know a way of accessing Computer-1 data without destroying any other backups/files etc. Than you!

  • Why Migration or Restore Utility doesn't find any Time Machine backups from Time Capsule ?

    Hello,
After a big issue on my system (Lion), I had to do a full restore from Time Capsule and my problems started.
    Here is my setup:
Time Capsule configured with account-based authentication
MacBook with OS X Lion (x2) (1 needs a restore)
I booted from Lion's restoration partitions, then I selected "Restore from Time Machine backup", my Time Capsule is detected. I hit "Continue", the utility asks my login/password. Then...nothing ! It seems that no backup is detected.
Well, from another computer, I tried to connect with the same login/password and mount the sparsebundle backup...no problems
To go further, I launched Migration utility from the working computer, then tried to restore from Time Machine backups....no backup is detected again !
    Solution:
I had, from Lion's restoration partition, to mount the Time Capsule drive, then the sparsebundle image (the backup) from Terminal.
After that, the restoration utility was able to detect the "local" mounted sparsebundle backup image.
    Aftermath:
Not a single Apple utility, designed to restore my computer, was able to detect my Time Capsule's backups.
I was able to use the command line utility to be able to restore my computer.
    Question:
Did I miss something ? Am I the only one to do that to restore from a Time Capsule configured with account authentication ?

I'm sorry I didn't get your point. I didn't find any answer in this FAQ.
For the record, I checked my backups with Disk Utility, no damages were found, so it should work out of the box.

  • How do I find bad music files?  I have thousands of files, but some are bad.  When I try to load them into iTunes, it just spins.  I need a routine to identify and remove the bad files.  Any ideas?

    Hi ajoddo20,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
You can use Home Sharing to import music and other media from one computer to another. Please use the instructions and information located in the attached article for information on how to complete the process.
