The right mac for me. NEED HELP
I am looking to buy a mac. I will just be using it for email, writing with WORD. In the near future i would like to add ADOBE photoshop and illustrator.

Im a graphic designer who lives an hour away from my permanent employer. To help cut down on travel expenses and to get through the horrible winters we have I want to be able to access my work computer from home. Specifically be able to access files on my work computer as well as print the files that are on my home and work computers to the printers at my work.
I tried gotomypc.com and you cant print remotely. I am on a free trial of logmein.com and I find it not user friendly at all. Im able to print remotely just fine but I dont like how open and unguarded my computer is without a black out screen or curtain mode.
Is Apple Remote Desktop a good fit for my needs or is there some other software out there?ARD will not allow you print from your home system to your printers at work either. You could transfer the documents from your home system to your work system and then print, but you don't need ARD for that. File sharing, for transferring the documents, and the Screen Sharing built into Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 to take control of the work computer, would be all you need and wouldn't cost you anything additional.
If, however, you need the ability to "curtain" the screen at work, then you would need ARD. Another, somewhat less expensive, option would be Timbuktu.

New to the World Mac and I need help with the internet?

I've purchased a second hand eMac from a local College last summer and I've finally got around to connecting it to the internet (after 20 + years of working and using PCs). All is great or I thought???
There is a few problems that I still encountered and hopefully someone can help?
The spec of the Mac is 1 GHz PowerPC G4 (768 MB SDRAM) running Mac OS X Vers. 10.3.9.
For the internet I connect via Safari 1.3.2 (v312.6). However, I cannot access Hotmail, selected sites outside of the UK and also when I go into Facebook the interface (layout) is a mess and I can't access various options available. I tried to download Safari 4.0.4. for SnowLeopard, but it won't allow it as I don't have the Billings of Materials?
Does anyone know how I can resolve the above or point me in the correct direction.

Version 1.x of Safari is old in Internet years, and many sites using advanced coding (or non-standard coding) won't render properly. Later browser versions have more support for the non-standard HTML that for instance MS webpage programs generate as well as support for more recent authoring tools. Which is a long-winded way of saying you're on the right track, you need to update your browser.
The later versions of Safari require OS X 10.4 or later. Your eMac can be upgraded to 10.4 or 10.5, but it'll be easier to first try a free third-party browser such as Firefox or Camino or Opera (Version Tracker and MacUpdate are good links to start from when looking for software and updates).
Note: moving among different browsers on different platforms, I can confirm that it's all too common for sites to render differently, with layouts off from a little to a lot.
As for being blocked from non-UK sites and Hotmail, if that still crops up with Firefox, check to see if the school that sold you the computer had proxy servers set yp that might be blocking some sites. You can also go to Apple menu, System Preferences, show built-in Ethernet or Airport depending on which one you use, click on the Proxies tab, and see if anything is checked/active there. -
Is Oracle Text the right solution for this need of a specific search!

We are on Oracle 11.2.0.2 on Solaris 10. We have the need to be able to do search on data that are having diacritical marks and we should be able to do the serach ignoring this diacritical marks. That is the requirement. Now I got to hear that Oracle Text has a preference called BASIC_LEXER which can bypass the diacritical marks and so solely due to this feature I implemented Oracle Text and just for this diacritical search and no other need.
I mean I set up preference like this:

OrauserNIf all you need is LIKE functionality and you do not need any of the complex search capabilities of Oracle Text, then I would not use Oracle Text. I would create a function-based index on your name column that uses your function that removes the diacritical marks, so that your searches will be faster. Please see the demonstration below.

Do I have the right software for my needs?
I have an issue with just jumping on forums and asking for help with code and build assistance, how do i do this or that.
My point in this visit is because of some frustration with designing a simple flash vid. I have no idea what Adobe product I should be using because the site poorly defines the products they have. All I want is a video that fades through a few pictures on a loop. Something too heavy for a gif.
The learning video's go right past this level of basics into application building and the help files are so adjoined to hard code, I feel like Flex is not the right thing to be using.
Can someone give me a suggestion as to what software I should look at OR a better push in the direction of learning how to use this builder. Please excuse my stubbornness to envelop myself in this software but I have less time than i care to admit.

If you wanted some details on what i am stuck with, for starters, i have to states (an image in each) and i'm trying to make a fade transition between the two. What's the right mac for Final Cut Studio?
Hi, I am a cameraman who wants to start learning final cut pro 5 to at first get a dvd together of my work (about 10 mins)and then maybe do some professional editing down the line. I am a bit lost with what mac I need to run studio on as I'm hearing conflicting voices. I can afford to buy an iMac G5 with 1.5 gig of ram. Will all the applications in studio run on this machine? should i bump up the hardrive to 250? Worst comes to worst should i wait and buy a power mac? Thanks for any help.
Imac g5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)Let's get serious. You are trying to put together a short reel, not edit Cold Mountain.
If you believe you will make your living from this machine, get a professional grade box and all the bells and whistles to go with it.(max ram, multiple internal SATA drives, big monitors, etc)
If you want to get your feet wet, develop an understanding of the program and its basic operational structure, most anything that meets the minimum configuration will do. (Heck, you can edit on a powerbook...)
In the first case, (the professional box) if you spend 5 minutes rather than 15 minutes waiting for a render, it makes a differnece, time IS money. In the second case (learning curve), it doesn't matter. It's your time.

Hi there, I'm currently running Logic Express 8 with an 8 channel USB soundcard peripheral into a powermac G5 (dual 1.8GHZ, 1.25GB RAM), running the latest OS and applications. I'm thinking of perhaps upgrading to a new computer...however, the difference is that I'm thinking that I'd prefer a macbook of some description. This is largely for practical living preferences that is leading me to make this change from tower to laptop. My only concern is regarding my capacity for running audio programs, as I've never owned a macbook before (nor any laptop on which I've done multitracking work).
Would I be doing myself an injustice by using a macbook for multitracking audio programs like Logic? Is it actually designed for that sort of thing? I ask because I always see people using powermacs/mac pro towers for that sort of thing. What would people suggest? And whilst I'm on it, would I naturally go towards a Macbook Pro as opposed to a plain ol' Macbook?

look at my specs: I am using an older white macbook, and everything runs well. But if you go for a new macbook, i would strongly encourage you to buy a macbook pro for several reasons:
1st: Bigger Display. Just a case of ergonomy, but in the end a lack of it is a botleneck to creative production.
2nd: More CPU Power. You guessed it
3rd: Get one with a 7.200 rpm HD. Otherwise, you'll end up with an external 7200 Disk anyway.
4th: Firewire (or get the older white Macbook if it's still available). The smaller new Macbook doesn't have it - god knows why.
5th: better internal speakers. At least something that has to do with audio....
6th: Yep - the extension card slot suited for the Apogee Hardware (if you like to be a beggar sitting on a beach of gold).
and 7th: Good desktop replacement.

Not sure if this is the right place, but I need help working with wtmpx
I am trying to write a program that collects data from the /var/adm/wtmpx file and I would like to use the structures and functions provided by the utmpx.h file in /usr/include. I can read the utmpx file with no problem, however I would like to read the wtmpx file. I think the way to do it is to use the function utmpxname(). However, this appears to be the one function that doesn't seem to work. The compiler complains that there is no function utmpxname(). I am mainly a C++ programmer so this code is a little confusing to me. Where can I find the actual implementation of the utmpxname()? PLEASE HELP!!
This is a Solaris question. You should post it to that discussion.
Items in section 3 of the manual are not part of the compiler. They
would be in libc or some other system lib distributed with
the OS and not maintained under the compiler collection. -

There's news, products and general page editing.
I can see News being straightforwards in Ct but not sure about the rest. It appears that an editor requires Ct whether they want to edit in a browser or not. Is this the case? Sort of defeats the purpose for browser editing doesn't it?

Help with choosing the right specifications for a Macbook Pro Retina?

So I'm new to Macs, but I know what I want to achieve and I feel this is the right route to choose. I'm looking at delving into the world of music production, using Logic pro 9 and garageband, but I also enjoy watching High definition Movies and televison so I know that the Retina display is definatley the right choice for me. However, I'm unsure on the amount of RAM & Which processer I should choose. I have read a fair bit on forums and online about the new retina macbooks being 'locked' from upgrading, so the 16GB of RAM is an immediate choice for logetivity.
The choice of processor is when I start to become clouded in my choice. As forementioned, I'm looking at running logic pro, as well as high def movies. There is also a possibilty at looking into photo and video editing, Whether that be in final cut pro or photoshop... But I want to leave my options open.
I think the choice of 16GB of RAM, 2.6Ghz processor, with a 256GB hard drive ( as i have 1.5TB external space) would be a good choice. Once I've added on applecare that comes out at around £2350, Which is a significant investment, but one that I think will help me immensely for the future. I am interested in other peoples opinions on my possible choice because, as I said before, I'm new to the world of Macs and making the right choice is essential. As a side note, the choice of upgrades also ensures a reasonable resale value, which is a bonus.
RegardsBoth power adapter I have are different (at the magnet end) from the one in link.
Earlier adapters have T shaped connectors, which Apple later changed to the L shape, presumably to make them more abuse-proof. Either one is fine and the one you are using will not damage your Mac.
Retina MBPs and new MBAs use a completely different MagSafe 2 connector which will not fit (without an adapter). -
I downloaded the 64 bit version of itunes and plugged in my ipod touch but a sign pops up and says i need the right software for the ipod to connect which is 64 bit. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

IPod sync is duplicating all playlists - they multiply 2-3-4 and more...
