The risky business behind the Internet of Things

I'm too poor to afford nifty gadgets like that, so I'm safe for now.  :P
Seriously though, moving forward the industry really needs to focus more on security from top to bottom.  Things like Cisco back doors into core routers all the way down to BlueTooth toilets with no passwords.  We have a giant mess on our hands already, and it will only get worse as more things get connected.

It might seem so foreign to us that many of the so-called smart electronic gadgets that we have at home, can in fact be a security risk at large. That includes smart cars!

Does your fridge talk to your smartphone and let you know that you’re out of milk or butter? Can your stove turn on wirelessly based on a recipe you’ve created and plugged in? Maybe your washing machine can send you a text if you forgot the fabric softener or your laundry is on the verge of becoming smelly from being left behind? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I'm jealous, but thanks to the Internet of Things, having my very own WiFi enabled appliances isn't that far off.

  • The Internet of things and your television

Almost all the information currently on the Internet is created by humans. Content mainly produced by people. But the Internet of Things (IoT) is about devices connected to the Internet and interacting with other connected things and to a small extent with humans, and providing its own content. It is a concept that has enormous potential to impact how we live and work and is already starting to impact the home. But we are just at the tip of the iceberg. Smart TVs already comprise some of the billions of “things” currently connected to the Internet, and they will definitely have a role to play as the Internet of Things unfolds. I will start to identify that potential.

  • The Internet of things and computing

Smart devices, connected homes, embedded connected sensors, mobile devices and computers are all coming together in the Internet of Things (IoT). This massive network is constantly connected, constantly exchanging information and if it isn’t already, your home will soon be part of it. Your PC is a part of the IoT—both as a connected device itself and as an interface to other devices—and your Wi-Fi router is a critical, but often overlooked component. In this part of our Internet of Things series, I take a look at the role your computer plays and especially the importance of that Wi-Fi router.

  • Interesting Document: Service Deployment  and Service Configuration  within the Internet of Things

    Hi All,
    an interesting document:
Service Deployment  and Service Configuration  within the Internet of Things
    Best regards,
    Andy.

    Hello Marek,
I suppose you are not planning to do any kinds of advanced config using several VLANs and multiple SSIDs so let's just make your configuration simple and working.
In short, you need to remove all references to VLAN 1 and to any subinterfaces possibly related to the VLAN 1. This means in particular (follow these steps in sequence):
    Remove the Dot11Radio0.1 subinterface entirely
In the Dot11Radio0 section, remove the encryption vlan 1 mode ciphers tkip command
In the dot11 ssid ciscowifi section, remove the vlan 1 command
After performing these steps, make sure that the ssid ciscowifi and encryption mode commands are still present in the Dot11Radio0 configuration, and if not, reenter them.
    Best regards,
    Peter

  • The Internet of Things and Wearables

In this edition of The Internet of Things series, we take a look at Wearables. A newer entry into the IoT series, this entry takes a look at what wearables contribute now and what they can contribute in the future.

About 250 total wireless and Ethernet addresses, with a limit of 50 for wireless devices........assuming that it is the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule that is acting as the router handing out the IP addresses.

  • ASA 5505 not connecting to the internet

My ASA 5505 9.1 previously worked but I recently swapped out my modem (different issue).  The new modem is bridged so my ASA gets an IP address from the ISP.
Internet ------ SB6141 modem ---------- ASA ---------- rest of network (direct connection or router)
I have no issues connecting to the ASA and when I remove the ASA my router properly connects to the internet.
    Things I have tried
Setting static address for ASA outside interface
Pinging 8.8.8.8 from ASDM (ping fails in ASDM but works in CLI)
    Modifying the NAT
    Successful packet trace
    Reading multiple other forum entries
I can't figure out what is blocking the traffic to the outside.  Below is my running-config.

First lets eliminate the ASA as the problem, Connect a PC directly to one of the "inside" ports on the ASA and make sure it recieves an IP in the 192.168.1.0/24 range.
add this command to the ASA
    object network obj_any
      nat (inside,outside) dynamic interface
now try to ping 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.2
If ping works, now add the router back into the loop and see if you are able to reach the internet again.

  • The "mac book" pro turns off after performing the internet recovery

we had the macbook pro and we put in a new hard drive and when we press the power button it turns on and has a flashing file qith a question mark on it and we did the internet recovery thing but after its done it just turns off again. please help

The battery has an integrated microchip that acts as a "fuel gauge." Calibration resets this gauge, which allows the OS to better determine times to charge and discharge the battery. Calibration should be done approximately every two months. Failure to do so for a long period of time can result in the microchip "fuel gauge" in the battery losing the ability to accurately determine the remaining charge, and it will report that there is more charge in the battery than is actually present. As a result, the computer will not initiate Safe Sleep at the proper time, and instead undergo a hard shut down, one of the main causes of hard drive directory damage.

  • Spotlight won't search the Internet on iOS 8.0.2

    Hello.
Apple said said that spotlight can now show the Internet search things directly below the spotlight bar. I know that feature has to be activated in settings but I did that and it still doesn't work! I mean I click on it, the tick thing shows, I exit from settings, try spotlight (won't work), go back to settings and the "bing search" (or whatever it's called) is not marked/ticked! I though that Apple fixed it on the newest update.

The screen accidentally returned to normal size, so I must have tapped with the right number of fingers the right number of times I my desparation! I went and turned the zoom off. Thanks for the info.

  • I hv a wifi connection. the ipad is detedcting the wifi, but still unable to connect to the internet.

I have a wi-fi connection. The Ipad is detecting the connection, but i am not able to connect to the internet.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

my ipod connects to every thing except one app and it says that the internet connection is busy how do i fix this i tried restarting the network settings but it dose not work

If the old ID is yours, and if your current ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • RV042 behind P660 unable to connect to the internet

    Hi,
I am a bit new to setting up dual wan router. I am currently having a Zyxel P660 Adsl router but rv042 is unable to connect to the internet as zyxel doesn't give it a I.P address. Thank you guys in advance.

    Hello Rashmin,
I am not that familair with the P660 but from looking over Zyxel's website it looks like a modem/router combo.
Is it possible to place the Zyxel into bridged mode, so that it only acts as a ADSL router and passes the public IP on to the RV042?  You may need to call your ISP to have them do this for you.
When you are in bridged mode you will also probably have to configure the RV042's WAN port as a PPPoE connection and enter your ISP's credentials, so make sure they give you this when you speak to them about bridged mode.
With some routers it is possible to plug in another router behind them and everything sort of works.  This is called a double NAT situation, and does prevent VPN from working.  However not even that is working here so I would definitely see about getting that modem into bridged mode.  Some ISPs also call it IP passthrough or one-to-one NAT, just tell them you want a public IP on your RV042's WAN port.
    Thank you for choosing Cisco,

I am a new iPhone 5s user. I like many of the features it offers. I don't like that I cannot talk and use the internet (if I am away from WI-FI) and this phone is too small. I am actually thinking of returning it and going back to an Android. After all the hassle it took to get all my stuff working on this phone , it may be worth the switch. This phone needs to be able to multitask freely in this day and age. Also Safari is not the best search engine but I could work with it if I could talk and use it at the same time. I use my phone for business and this is a feature that is needed in my line of work.

I understand that the OP failed to do research. But then, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Chris. I have Verizon. I can talk and use data at the same time with my Droid Maxx. Therefore, the problem is not just with the network. It would be technically possible for an iPhone to do that on Verizon/Sprint if Apple had chosen to use a different chip, such as the kind other phone manufacturers have elected to use.
Of course, this is probably all irrelevant to the OP's issue. It was merely a point of clarification, especially for those people who are used to being able to use both voice and data at the same time on Verizon. When they switch to an iPhone, they are often surprized at the limitation.
    Best of luck.
