The saga continues:  my quest for good video

on previous discussions here and on the iMovie thread, i detailed my frustration with video attained with my Vixia HV30 (HDV) camcorder. i obtained FCE because i thought my problems might be related to my old iMovie HD 6. the problem persisted: staggering video that seemed to stagger roughly every four seconds. this was observed even with the ingested source played within iMovie or FCE. much phone time with apple product specialists. clips carried to other computers showed the same staggering in the same places. camera carried to other computers (at apple retail store, more time with a product specialist) produced the same staggering when footage was ingested there. this convinced me that the problem was in the camera, not on my computer (new display, new graphics card, problem predated both).
canon serviced the camera and "it was found that the part was inoperative the device could not communicate with the computer." i found this encouraging and hastened to test. alas, the same problem was there and it was now not focusing correctly which had been fixed earlier.
after a period of head banging on wall, i went to best buy and purchased a HF S10 (figuring i could return for the restocking fee and essentially "rent" an HD camera to test with).
my first experience with AVCHD so had to do a little learning. reshot my test and ingested the video.
what a beautiful, sharp image. THIS is what i expect from an HD camera.
source clip played perfectly in the canvas (something that did not happen before). thrilled, i produced a 1280x720 clip (the size vimeo prefers for HD video) and eagerly watched in the QT player.
same staggering. WHAT?
recalled that one of the product specialists i talked to was not all that enthusiastic about the QT player, so i played the same clip using VLC. perfect. WHAT?
output to AppleTV. perfect. output to iPhone. perfect. output in a variety of SD sizes. QT always had the stagger at the same 4 second interval (harder to see on the smaller sizes, but still there). VLC always played with no problems.
am having a hard time understanding this. is it an encoding issue that QT can't handle, but VLC can?
i can play HD movie trailers from Apple that are way larger than what i have produced and they play just fine, so i don't think it is the player per se. why is this happening?
and my other big question is would FCS compressor program do a better encoding job that would avoid this?
just for reference, the "vimeo" clip mentioned above has a data rate of 10.87 mbits/s

tom, here is the clip. this is 1280x720 de-interlaced. when i play this using QT player, the clip staggers roughly every four seconds (i suspect it is between 4 and 5, but i am just counting, not clocking). it is noticeable once the train gets rolling. when i play in VLC, there is no stagger.
the first stagger i can detect happens at about 20 sec. then 23, then 28 and so on.
once i loaded the clip to my iDisk, i played it to make sure it had loaded correctly. playing it within Safari, the stagger is still there, but significantly reduced. just something else to confuse me, i guess.

How do I get the music back on my iPhone after manually deleting it from the device (to get space for photos/videos)?  I can sync with iTunes but it doesn't copy these songs back, even though they still appear in my iTunes library.  I can click on the Music link  under 'On My Device' in iTunes and the missing songs all appear to still be on the device, but they are not.  I normally delete using iTunes and do not have this issue.  This time I was out and needed more space to shoot photos and videos so I removed a lot of music from my phone through the Music App.

The songs I'm trying to reload on my phone are on my PC.  These we had loaded into iTunes.  I can remove them all from the library and then add them all back one by one I imagine.  The problem I'm having is that I removed them manually from the phone, they still appear in iTunes music library yet they won't sync.  I don't want to take the time to compare the phone to my library, remove from the library what's missing on the phone and then add them all back again.  64GB (mostly music) will take a while.

You have it currently installed? Can you go to the System Profiler and click on Applications (will take a while to populate) - take a look at your FCP and check what it says on the right - Universal, Intel, or PPC? It'll look like this:
If it's Universal or Intel, it'll run in Lion. However, the installer may or may not be PPC - that you may not know until you try to install. If you have it currently installed, then you could do what I did - move over all the files manually. I have a list of files for FCE and would assume they'd be the same with FCP: copy them from the old Mac and insert them in the very same spots on the new one.
Here is the list for FCE:

When trying to log on to my personal hotspot on my Ipone, after entering the password the system continues to ask for the password over and over again. How do I fix this?

    Hi SheilaStuhr,
The troubleshooting steps detailed below can help get you connected to your iPhone's personal hostpot.
    Basic troubleshooting
See if your iOS device, computer, and wireless plan all meet the system requirements for Personal Hotspot.
Make sure Personal Hotspot is on: Tap Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Check the Internet connection on your iOS device: Tap Safari and load a new webpage.
If one connection type doesn't work, try another. For example, instead of connecting using Wi-Fi, use USB or Bluetooth.
Turn Personal Hotspot off and on: Tap Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Install the latest version of iOS.
Reset your network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If you still see the issue, restore the iPhone.
If you're still experiencing issues, try the steps below.
    Wi-Fi troubleshooting
If you encounter an issue using Personal Hotspot with other Wi-Fi devices, try these steps:
    Turn Personal Hotspot off.
    Turn on Wi-Fi: Tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
    Turn on Personal Hotspot.
If another device can't join your Wi-Fi network, make sure the Wi-Fi password is correct.
If the device can't see your Wi-Fi network, check your device name. Windows may not correctly show a device name that uses non-ASCII characters.
See how many devices are using your Personal Hotspot. Depending on your wireless carrier, the number of Wi-Fi connections may be limited to three devices at once.
If the other device still can't connect, turn Wi-Fi off and on for the device.
Make sure that your device can see other Wi-Fi networks.
Note: If you see "Unable to Join" or a timeout error when you try to connect a device using Wi-Fi, remain on the Personal Hotspot screen until the first device connects. After the device connects, you can leave the Personal Hotspot screen and use your iPhone normally. Your device will stop broadcasting Wi-Fi if you put it to sleep or if 90 seconds elapse and no connected devices use Wi-Fi. To share your Wi-Fi network again, tap Settings > Personal Hotspot.

  • The saga continues Mac Pro setup

Sorry to start yet another one my first time here. After much reading and research, among reading over 50 pages here in this forum alone I would like some guidance on setting up my new Mac Pro (2008) dual quad core 2.8Ghz bad boy.
I just purchased 4 Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM from Newegg here -> http://tinyurl.com/6jmpbr Because these seem to be suggested for use many times throughout this and other forums. I hope these are the correct ones? They were also a great buy however, I am somewhat fearful of Newegg’s shipping strategy (lack of proper packing and UPS tends to toss shipments around like a pro-wrestler). In addition, I would have also like to have got them from different sources as not from the same batch but hey the price was too good to miss out on and I did not feel like waiting.
Now for the best approach, or approaches, to setting them up for best usage and optimal performance. 2 sets striped and mirrored Raid 10 I think it is ( preferably with a small boot partition for just the OS say 100gb)
    or
1 drive for the OS and move users, and applications to a striped and mirrored Raid. I have read most of the links provided here and in other forums but I am still not sure the best route to go. Also most of the information is somewhat not as thorough as I would like.
(Background or helpful information as to my needs)
I do a small amount of lightroom and aperture toying around but not a lot. I do encode video some mostly for just personal use movies, some final cut studio occasionally, and I do have (but not used yet) logic studio (for one of my son’s to use). My biggest no no’s or issues that I would have would be in playing games like COD4 or moving large amounts of data on and off the machine which would frag out my system. I think? Most of the work that I would be doing would not push the system very much and I feel I have enough memory and space that I will need. Except for a backup this is where my next problem lies. In reading I hear advice to use superduper, carboncloner, to backup and re-image back to the system. From what I am hearing this is to defrag, while backing up the system. I have used both of these products but have recently started using clonetool would like feedback on it as well.
In addition to the hard drives , just after getting my unit I purchased 16gig of “supposedly” matched pairs from MacGeeks (Ebay store) at a reasonable price I believe -> http://tinyurl.com/6fgmq6 They all seem to work fine and haven’t noticed any problems and since they had such good feedback I decided to chance getting my ram from someone other the “the blood-suckers” AKA Apple. I really did not need a Mac Pro like some do I just wanted one so that I could have a great machine that would last hopefully for many years of worry free service and not have the burning desire to get a better unit. I feel this will fulfill my desires and needs for many years to come if I get the proper advice on setting my unit up the first time. I would love as much instruction and insight on the approaches Mac users have to helping a noob set his up. I can’t believe this all started this year in July with the purchase of a Mac book 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo laptop. That first taste was all that it has taken. In September this year I purchased a Dell mini 9 netbook and turned in into a very fast (but not a powerhouse) couch and coffee shop machine running leopard 10.5.5 even faster for the basics (boot up, surfing) than my real Mac book. I would love to get the full experience and pleasure out of my Mac Pro. I very much appreciate all the help and tips from the people in the Mac community.

Thanks The hatter for the input, I decided to test it by taking a drive out it would boot with three drives so that was a success. However, upon replacing the pulled drive back into the raid FAIL.
So a do over was then implemented.
This time I chose to do it with 2 sets mirrored and then stiped the two sets. Viola I tested pulling the drive and booting (ok) then re-inserted the drive back into the raid and booted then repaired the degrading raid and I'm good so at least if I have a drive failure happen before I get my backup strategy setup (more money for external backup) I should be good.
One note I most certainly understand this is not a route most people would take but it is pretty fast now and that pleases me.
Also at the beginning of this episode
I first tried to setup a boot (OS X only) drive and move users and apps to other drives and symlinking but that seemed to be even more difficult than setting up the raid. I think that is the preferred setup route but I don't have the skills to get r done <a little Larry the cable-guy humor.
Thanks and if you guys have any tips or suggestions please help a noob out. I appreciate all you guys for the help with this seemingly difficult setup.

  • HT5958 Audio prevents relinking to original media -- can I manually change the number of audio channels for a video clip?

I recently updated to Final Cut X 10.1. I had a project for which I was heavily editing the audio, so I was using the "detach audio" feature and in some cases deleting the audio track. Now, when I try to go into the timeline and relink the movie files (which weren't linked automatically after update), the original media won't relink because "the original file didn't have audio, but the new file does."
Is there anyway to edit the misreferenced file so it beleives it has an audio track?
Thank you for any and all suggestions. I really don't want to start this edit over from scratch.
    Ben

Thanks for the responses, guys. I guess I wasn't really all that clear. Something to do with FCP 6 and the Kona III card is telling FCP to set up each project with 16 channels of audio - and ONLY 16 channels of audio. Anywhere that there is a drop-down or check box, the drop-down or check box is either grayed out or only provides choices centered around 16 channels of audio. So, for example, let's say I go to the "Capture Presets" tab under "Audio/Video Settings" and click on "Edit" to modify the current preset. Under "QuickTime Audio Settings," I select "AJA Kona" as my device. Then, under the "Format" drop-down, I have four possible audio formats to choose from - ALL of them showing 16 channels (e.g. - "48.000 khz 24-bit 16-channel"). Nowhere is there an option of selecting, say "48.000 khz 24-bit 2-channel." Everything under every tab specifies 16-channel. So, as a result, I can't tell it to disable the fourteen tracks that I'll NEVER use. I even tried starting with the "Generic" settings tab, used to create your own presets, and even that would ONLY allow me 16-channels - and I couldn't over-ride it!
So far, the only way I've found to work around this is to manually go in and turn off the little green nodes indicating which audio track(s) you don't want to capture. The problem is, every time I have to do this, I'm manually turning of FOURTEEN audio channels.
    Hope this helps clarify...

  • The saga continues...Transfering 10.3 from one iMac to another

Well, I have half a lab up and running ..... 10.3.9 on Firewire iMacs 400-600 MHz. the other half are 350 MHz without Firewire. I need to be able to use Ethernet to Clone these in some way.... I feel moderately successful as I was able to get a test 350 to hold 10.1 and then mount the HD from a 10.3.9 iMac. I dragged the system over, then restarted it. Then the folder with 10.3.9 showed up as a choice in the startup disk.
I chose this, then started it, but it didn't start 10.3, but the 10.1 .... I feel close to solving this. I only have 10.3.9 so cannot use CCC as it needs 10.4 to network Clone. I do have another 10.3.9 iMac with a "big" 30 MB HD that I partitioned in half.....
    thanks,

You cannot drag and drop Mac OS X from harddrive to harddrive. Drag works for classic but not X.
You need the older version of cc.

You cannot contact the iTech Developer.  This ripoff vendor has no contact info and I expected more protection from Apple then to allow such a shady vendor to sell to their customers.  Their collage app is a complete ripoff.  It does nothing!  It's partly my fault for not reading reviews first!  I know better now.  Thought Apple would safeguard their customers as they have always done in the past!  I am very upset right now!

  • Kidda urgent --Portal, Apache, OC4J -- the Saga Continues

Ok, so OC4J is great! Wonderful!
As I've mentioned in a previous post, I'm developing a JSP portlet using JDeveloper. I'm deploying it to an OC4J server -- the same computer where I have the Portal installed. It seems to work, but...not really.
I CAN see my JSP portlets, I CAN redirect to different JSP pages I've created (all the in the context of the Portal), but I CAN NOT save anything in the SESSION object.
After spending a day investigating into it, I've realized that, for some odd reason, every time I click on a link in my JSP page in the Portal, I get a different SESSION (used session.getId() method). Thus, I can not save anything in the SESSION.
I've added in my Apache HTTPD.CONF file the 3 lines of the MOD_PROXY (guidelines in "getStart.htm"), but I've also noticed that at the end of the file there are still 'commands' telling it to use JServ.
I think that the SESSION problem is caused because of 2 issues:
    1) The transition from JSERV to OC4J was incomplete. When I try to take those last few lines that deal with JSERV off the HTTPD.CONF file, the HTTP ORACLE service (in Windows) doesnt come up at all.
    2) There's also the problem of cookies -- the Apache server is on one port, the OC4J on another. So cookies can not be saved. I've "CHECKED" the thingy in the Portal where you define a Porlet Provider ("Same cookie domain" or something), and it didnt help.
SO! First, I wish to turn the Portal from using JServe to using OC4J. Does anyone have COMPLETE instructions on how to do it? Step by step please....
Second, I also ran into the problem of 'translating' JServ 'terms' into OC4J. When registering a JSP portlet, you must include some aliases in JSERV files -- files that DO NOT exist in OC4J. (jserv.properties, etc). You know how you're supposed to run a certain test, like "IsItWorking" to know that your portlet is fine? So how? (using OC4J, of course)
I realize that this must be the LONGEST post anyone has ever written, but I thought it would be best to describe EVEEEEERYTHING to get the best answers.... :-)
    Thanks in advance!
    Dan

    Dan,
It is great to see you already developing portlets on OC4J. In PDK April, we are offering a production pre-release of PDK-Java release 2 based on OC4J. You can use that to display your J2EE-based application as a portlet on Oracle9iAS Portal 3.0.9.x.x and/or Portal 9.0.2 (when available). We will provide detailed articles and this should be a very easy setup especially if you are already familiar with OC4J.
One thing... from your question, it also sounded like you were considering moving Oracle9iAS Portal (not just PDK-Java) from JServ to OC4J. Just to clarify, you will be able to register your J2EE-based portlets using PDK-Java 9.0.2 (available in PDK April -- by next week) again Oracle9iAS Portal running JServ.
Oracle9iAS Portal itself is support on OC4J in version 9.0.2. This release will be available as part of Oracle9i Application Server release 2. The only supported, tested, and certified way to move Oracle9iAS Portal 3.0.9 to OC4J is using the Oracle9iAS release 2 universal installer, it will update your files and enable Oracle9iAS Portal to successfully run on OC4J instead of JServ.
I strong suggest you wait for the release to migrate and in the meantime, use PDK-Java 9.0.2 to display your portlets against Portal 3.0.9
    Hopefully this helps,
    Sue

  • FCP: What is the best quality sequence setting for HD Video with JPEGs?

    Hello,
If I am editing digital still images that are 3696x2464, in order to make them into a HD video in FCP what is the best sequence setting?
There are so many HDV settings and I still don't understand the aspect ratio options...
    please advise!

    Hello,
where do I choose the ProResLT in the setting window? and What should be the Frame Size and Pixel Aspect Ratio? I am trying different options and having a hard time finding a setting that doesn't distort or pixel the image. Please help!
Additionally, would this setting maintain the quality even when the movie is exported and burnt onto a DVD?
    many thanks.

I'm running the older version of Safari right now on Panther. When I try to upgrade to 1.3, it says it can't install it on my hard drive. Anyone know what's up with Safari lately?
