The screensaver forgets photo source

I have recently updated my Macbook Air to Yosemite but it is so full of bugs that I will wait until they fix it all before upgrading my Mac Pro.
Other than the random hangs and safari crashes that litter what were perfectly normal activities in Mavericks one of the most annoying bugs is in the screensaver, which I would normally have setup as a slide show of one of my iPhoto events.
But no matter which event or album I choose to be the photo source in the screensaver control panel each time the screensaver starts it has defaulted back to National geographic.
How do I get it to work properly again?
Also, I have the desktop set to a random selection from an iPhoto album. Which is more stable than the screensaver, which doesn't work at all, but still seems to randomly forget my settings and return to the picture of some random American cliff.
The Macbook is generally well maintained and charged or powered so there shouldn't be an issue with the PRAM.
I hope they fix all these bugs soon.
They also seem to have greyed out the Mac OS and System Software Community to post this question to. What is going on.

I went into iphoto preferences and deleted any keywords that had numbers in them.
imovie now recognizes iphoto.

  • HELP, please! My photos have disappeared from iPhoto library & I can only see them on the screensaver.

Firstly, I should say we haven't updated/installed/deleted anything.  I just opened iPhoto yesterday and first it told me it couldn't open up without specifying a library, but then it seemed our library has just disappeared.  I then created a new library as, I have to admit, me & my DH are complete tecno dummies, but that didn't help much.  The only thing which we have done in the past couple of days is set up the screensaver to play our photos.  So now we can only see the photos on that - I'm presuming that means they haven't been completely lost (?) but am in a panic as we've got no back-up (three years worth of photos!).
When I go on 'system preferences' (hope that's the correct translation, our computer's using Italian) and the screensaver, I can see 'picture folder' where all the photos are but I can't find that anywhere else on the computer.
Also, I read other threads about similar probs & tried launching iPhoto pressing down 'option & control' but that didn't help me out either.
We also spent half an hour on the phone to the Apple helpline here in Italy (yes, that's a charged call) to try and understand what's gone wrong and the advisor just kept telling us she didn't know how to help us out 'cause our Mac is an old model
Apologies in advance for my complete ignorance about how to solve this problem but I'd be really grateful if someone out there could shed some light on what's happened.

when you say to go to my Pictures Folder, do you mean to go on Finder, then Pictures, then look at the iPhoto library?
Yes. Is there more than one there?
The material in your screensaver are cached images. They cannot be recovered and soon they will go way.
If you have deleted your Library (and it sounds like you have done this, accidentally)  the you have deleted your Photos and you need to restore from your back up.

  • Including the filename on photos used as a screensaver slideshow

In Windows 7, an option has disappeared from the dialog box for customizing the screen saver.  I use a folder of photos to run a slideshow as the screensaver.  It used to be  one could specify that the display would include the file name.  This was useful, but is no longer the case.  Is there a less obvious way to do this now?

How do i add and delete photos from the screensaver preference window?

    Hello, sassy4sue.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that you may find helpful when creating or editing iPhoto albums that you are using as a screen saver.

  • What do icons indicate in the screensaver source list?

On my system, I have both Aperture and iPhoto, each with lots of photos.  When I open the screensaver pref panel, many questions arise if I try to pick out something from the large number of folder, events, project, etc.  Is there a place to find out which icons come from which image database?

Well I do not have Aperature. Here is what I see under iPhoto- They all appear to be labeled,  so maybe I do not understand the problem.

  • Photos and the Screensaver

Hopeing someone with an AppleTV infront of them can answer this simple question regarding the screensaver options.
Specifically, is there a screensaver that allows me to display one photo at a time from my sync'ed library, full screen, minimal cropping, crossfading between photos and an optional Ken Burns effect? Mac OS has such a screensaver. Does the AppleTV? I understand the AppleTV may offer a multi-photo mosaic or tiled screen saver, but I'm looking for full screen, one at a time as mentioned above. Thanks!

Settings/screensaver/slideshow and select the album or photos you want to be displayed.
You can toggle transitions and ken burns effect in photos/settings

  • Is there a way to keep the screensaver on?

I have Macbook Pro from around 2008, not sure of the exact model, running 10.5.8. I have it hooked up to a large Apple Display. We're having a party tomorrow night and I'd like to leave the screensaver on a photo album of a trip to Italy that we took, but I can't figure out a way to set it so that the screensaver stays on continuously. Is there a way to do that? Or, do I need to run it as a continuous slideshow in iPhoto instead? Thanks

    Hi Jayfram
You could configure the computer to stay on:
apple menu, system preferences, energy saver, power adapter tab
    set computer to sleep never
    display sleep to never
uncheck automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep
this will allow your computer to stay on while it's plugged in.
The advantage of the screen saver is you can password protect the computer. this way no one can stop the slide show; and start messing around with your computer. The down side is people can still disrupt the slide show by accidentally bumping into the computer; but after a bit it will resume again.
If you want to use the screen saver:
apple menu system preferences, security, check require password x minutes after sleep or screen saver begins. in this case you might want to set the computer to require password quickly.
You may also want to make it easy to quickly enable the screen saver:
apple menu, system preferences, desktop & screen saver tab, hot corners button, set a hot corner.
while your there you can of corse configure the setting for the screen saver slide show.
If you chose to do an iphoto slide show. bumping the mouse wouldn't stop the slide show. iPhoto gives better control over slide shows. but you can't lock the computer like you can with a screen saver.

  • Hard Drive Failing, Need to Move Photo Source Folders

How does one move photo source folders from one drive to another in PSE11 without loosing the file links?

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Is there a limit to the number of Photos one can use in the Screen Saver?

As the title inquires... I recently help set-up a friend's screen saver to use their entire iPhoto library as content. The library has about 2,800 pictures. When the screen saver engaged, the 'Looking for pictures...' dialogue came up, and 10 minutes later it is still there. I am hoping that it is just indexing these photos, and once complete the screen saver will kick in, and future activations of the screen saver will kick in more quickly.
If not, what is the limit? And, if you are from Apple and are reading this, why did you not include this information in an easy to access location, so that going through all of this would not be necessary.

There is no limit as to the amount of pictures the screensaver can use. However the more pictures there is a slightly longer loading time. HOWEVER still, it should not take 10 minutes for 2800 pics. It shouldn't even take a minute.
It would be a little helpful as to what computer your running and what OS, but here is a good suggestion.
The first thing you want to do is to make sure you have the most recent updates for the OS and iPhoto. (Use the software updater)
Next you should repair disk permissions. Go into apps, into utilities, open disk utility, click your hard-drive on the left, and click repair disk permissions. When thats finished (10-30 minutes depending) restart the computer. For reasons that I'm not quite sure, disk permissions fixes many problems and glitches you may encounter.
    Try setting you screensaver again.

  • Why do the Screensaver not show pictures from my Aperture Library?

    Hello,
I have a new MacBook Retina and everything is fine, but the screensaver. When I choose a screensaver with photos (like Ken Burns) and an Aperture folder, the screensaver only shows "Fotos laden..." (German for "Loading pictures..."). When I choose the folder, I see all the pictures in the dialogue, but the saver itself don't shows them.
Using Aperture pictures for the desktop work by the way.
Any ideas? I already repaired (new database and stuff) the Aperture library, but it doen't helped.
One more hint: when I tried choosing an Aperture folder, the screensaver even don't work with the preinstalled pictures or normal picture folder on the HDD.
    Thanks for helping me!
    Volker

Connecting from one computer to another is one thing. The iTunes sharing feature is something completely different and is meant as a way for people to allow others to listen to their library from other computers on the same network that also run iTunes. It isn't meant as a direct connection from one iTunes library to another.
Think of it sort of like turning on the "Broadcast" or "Radio Station" feature of your iTunes to allow others to listen in on your library if they are interested. But you wouldn't want those people going in and making changes.

  • Why is the screensaver stuck at "loading pictures" forever?

I have Aperture (latest version), with 80,000 photos, and Iphoto (latest version), with only 26 photos.  I've checked permissions and repaired my drives from the repair partition.  I've run Repair Permission, Repair Database, and Rebuild Database on Aperture, and Iphoto.  I've deleted the screensaver plist file via
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist
No luck - screensaver still takes forever to start, and I can't even change the screensaver settings - it's just hung at "loading photos".  I'm on Mavericks now, but this has been happening since Mountain Lion I believe.
    Anything else I can try?

If that does not work try here:

  • Screensaver random photo order is not random?

Hi - in addition to removing a lot of the screensaver options (eg in Classic Mode the "stretch to fill screen" and "keep photos centered" options) that I posted about yesterday,  I have also noticed that since my upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion the "show photos in random order" does not work properly. What happens is that a group of photos keeps showing up over and over again in the screensaver. Every time I activate the screensaver this a different group, and it's mixed in with truly random pics, but a few keep showing up all the time - really annoying. Does anyone have a fix?
    Cheers Klaus

Hi Klaus, did you ever find a solution to this? I have exactly the same issue. Each time you start the screen saver, there's a bunch of photos that keep coming up again and again. It seems to be different everytime, but the only way to get ride of the 'stuck' ones is to restart the saver.

I have a very similar problem but I have done the 5 Rs and more---multiple times--and my iPOD and iTunes are just stuck in an endless cycle of Restore and Restart but rather than showing up in the source panel so I can put my music back on, the icon appears and tells me to restore again. I did everything including checking my USB ports etc. in My Computer and my iPOD refuses to get out of this cycle when iTUNES does bother to recognize it. Any suggestions other than the 5 Rs---because they are doing absolutely nothing.

  • Did Apple change the screensaver settings?

I use to be able to choose one of my iPhoto album to use as the screensaver. In the past week I've noticed that my screensaver settings is using the National Geographic photos and I'm unable to go back and select when of my iPhoto albums. Why?? Anyone else has the same issue? Any fix to it?

Thanks but this is no my issue. I can access the desktop and screensaver settings however I'm unable to choose one of my iPhoto albums as a screensaver as I used to. The only choices are National Geographic, Aerial, Cosmos and Nature Patterns. I used to be able to choose one of my iPhoto albums just like you can do in the desktop settings.
I do have the option to choose a folder on my computer but that means I have to duplicate photos from iPhoto to another location...I was hoping for a better solution. Not sure why Apple is doing this...
