I have imported my iPhoto library onto Aperture, and then deleted the iPhoto library so not to have any duplicates. Now, the images on Aperture are pixelated and when I try to export them the following message appears: "Unavailable master images cannot be exported. The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again."  What does this mean? How can I get my photos "online" so that I can see them as they used to be?

How did you import your iPhoto Library? I assume, you used "File > Import > iPhoto LIbrary", but how did you set the "Store Files" pop-up menu?
If you chose to "Store Files in their current location", then you did not actually import the master image files into Aperture, but referenced them inside the iPhoto Library. In that case, you just deleted all your images, when you deleted the iPhoto Library. And if you did that, and your iPhoto Library is still sitting in the Trash, put it back; then your Aperture Library should work again. Or restore the iPhoto Library from your most recent backup and put it into the exactly same location where it used to be.
If you used a different "Store Files" setting, please explain where you have chosen to store the master image files. This will help to track down your images.
After restoring your master image files you may need to reconnect them to the versions. Post back, if you need help with that.

  • HT4007 The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again.

I have my aperture photos stored on a harddrive that is installed in my MacPro. I just tryed to email a photo and the message "The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again." popped up.  How can I find the master image?

  • "The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again."

I recently "upgraded" from Snow Leopard to Lion (10.7.2) by performing a clean install. I then reimported my Aperture Vault. Now almost all of my 12,000+ photos show a little yellow warning icon (see attached image). I am unable to edit or manipulate these photos in any way. When I attempt to, the following error message appears: "The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again."  I have already performed all 3 of Aperture's recommended Troubleshooting steps: . And here's one more bit of information. When I open Aperture while holding down the Option key (to choose the Aperture library), the dialog box asks "Which Aperture Library do you want to use?" and displays a table containing several older libraries as well as my current library (Aperture library.aplibrary) (this is the library that I am trying to use -- i.e. the one I am having trouble with). When I single-click to select this library, the information displayed below it shows its location on my external drive, as well as "12856 versions, 12920 masters." But when I double-click to open that library, I am left with the same problem. 12,000+ of these photos appear to have no master.
    Any help is appreciated!

I am really sorry, I could not be of more help to you so far. Remote diagnosis is very difficult, since I cannot take over your computer screen.
Your problem is very unusual and it really should not happen: with a managed library Aperture should know how to find the master image files, since it is Aperture's job to keep track of them. And so there are no built in controls in Aperture at all to reconnect managed masters. You Aperture library obviously is corrupted, and you need to find out why this happenend. If you know the reason, you may try to recreate it from your vault, and avoid the problem that caused the missing masters. That is why I asked about the formatting of your drive - I wild shot - granted- but if you restored your vault to an external disk not formatted MacOS extended this might result in missing master image files. You may want to restore from your vault again, using a different drive, to avoid hard drive problems.
If you cannot find the reason for the corruption that occured when restoring from the vault, then you will have to patch your Aperture library manually, since you already tried all built-in"First Aid" measures.
You already made sure, that the library contains a "Masters" folder and the images are there. One thing you could try (after making sure you have a backup of your library):
    Quit Aperture.
Open the Aperture Library Package again and move the Masters Folder to a folder outside the Aperture Library.
    Relaunch Aperture and try "locate referenced Files" again;
If this does not not succeed, you might try to reimport the masters to Aperture, but this way you would loose all your edits - that why I am trying to find a clue to the source of your problem
    Good Luck
I really hope somebody else will chime in with more ideas

  • The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again.

Hi to all, This is my first time here. I am having a problem that I've never had before. I am attempting to upload images to Flickr, which I do daily without trouble. However, this time I'm getting the message: "The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again." I am doing searches on my MacBook by copying and pasting the jpeg name in to the finder and they seem to be gone. I have taken special care to file my photos in certain folders. Either I have inadvertanly deleted entire folders or something very odd has happened. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thank you

Hi, Thank you for the response.
    I'm on 10.7.5 OS
    Ver. 3.4.3 Aperture
I have a folder on my desktop named "photo imports" I insert my card to the reader on my MacBook Pro and copy the files in to a folder nested within the Photo imports according to which camera I am using or sometimes it is a special project. This folder is on my computer's hard drive.
I then go in to Aperture and click "Import" I select in the "Store Files" menu: "in their current location"
This has been working nicely for me. I use Time Machine on a somewhat regular basis and I also use other editing software like Picassa and View NX2 (Nikon software)
I suppose that it is possible that I accidently dragged my folder in to the trash, but I really do try to be careful about that sort of thing. I have gone back in to Time Machine and have been unable to find the files. It is vexing. My granddaughter has been asking me for those particular pictures and the only way to view them is in Aperture on my computer because I am unable to email or export them in any way.

  • The selected original image (video) is either offline or not found.

I tried exporting a video from aperture to desktop.  It apparently lost the file.  I see the thumbnail with a yellow triangle.  I read a lot of post here and did all three repair stages when opening aperture.  Still no file and a thumbnail.  I tried locating the file in finder and cannot locate it.  I looked in aperture library in the masters and still cannot locate the origianl file to reconnect the video file.
Any help will be much apperciated

    Derek,
what happens, when you select the video with the broken reference in the Browser and use the command  to "File > Locate referenced file"?
In the "Referenced Files in Selection" window you should be able to see the path to the original file, where it should have been. Have you searched this folder?
Or is the problem, that Aperture does not allow to use the  "File > Locate referenced file" and gives the error message "The selection does not have any referenced files".
In that case the original movie should be in your Aperture library, and you shoud look inside the folder with the date you imported your movie - the Aperture library "Masters" folder is organized according to "Import session". To see the "Import session" of a version, edit a metadata preset in the libaray inspector info panel to include the "Aperture > Import session" tag when you are viewing a version.

How can I change (or select) what is being being used when I share, as the file cover. When I Share lets say "Master File" i want to select a frame that is used as the file cover. So when its on my desktop I see this image as the file icon.

I don't think Finder does this (I've tried).
iTunes does though. Where you can set artwork or the "poster frame"...
This may not be what you want but if it helps, I know 2 ways  do this is
Open the video in QuicktimePlayer7 | View | Set Poster Frame (even then, you might need to save it as .mov (ie in a 'mov container').
Drag the file into iTunes and set the artwork (as in http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/adding-album-cover-art-or-images-in-itunes .html)
From there, iTunes will use that frame as the "poster frame" ie the photo/frame that shows when you browse your videos. Which is what you want, but limited to iTunes.
When I do either of these above, the frame I set does not show when exploring files in "Finder" (or in the other Explorer tool I use called "Pathfinder").
So it maybe, that exactly what you want, is not possible.

  • How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
    Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!

  • How do I know if the image is a master or a referenced file?

I imported images into Aperture, and am now not sure whether to delete the originals (that were already on my hard drive in a photos folder).
How can I tell, after having imported them, whether the images in Aperture are referenced or master?
I'm just scared of deleting the original folder (the outside aperture one!)
    Thanks!
    Hannah

    Not really...
That merely shows you the master image with no adjustments applied - I think the question was how to tell the difference between masters that are referenced vs. managed - the answer to that question is that you can either use one of the functions under the file menu to consolidate the images into the library as managed masters (not available if images in the current selection are already managed) or use manage referenced files to take a look at the location on disk (not available for managed masters).
The other thing that you can do is do a search based on file status (add a search element to the search HUD)

  • What does Master Image Offline mean?

I tried to bring up the Master Image for a particular photo and got the message "Master Image Offline" and all of my adjustment options were grayed out so that I couldn't use them. Can somebody explain what this means and how I can still make adjustments to this picture? Also, I guess I should be asking how I can prevent this situation from happening in the future. Thanks.

It means you're using referenced masters and Aperture can't find the original file. Either the disk it's on is not attached, or you moved, renamed, or deleted the file using the Finder or another application.
You can tell Aperture where it is, but you must manually do so.

  • There any way to open an 'offline' image if the originals are gone?

I recently had pictures, 1827 of them, somehow get deleted off my computer, therefore it resulted in me not being able to do anything with them in Lightroom since they are now considered 'offline'... is there any way a person can somehow get these images off the lightroom program, so I can save them & still have access to them?

First, are you really sure that your pictures ahve been deleted? You can only be sure when a thorough search in your OS (Mac Finder / Win Explorer) does not find them.
The fact that LR sows them greyed-out and with question marks does not necessarily mean that the images are deleted.
That LR is not able to find the images can have several reasons:
    (a) worst case, the images are not on the hard drive at all.
    (b) the images are on the hard drive but in a different location. This happens when you move images / folders outside of LR.
    (c) images and/or folders have been renamed outside of LR.
    (d) a combination of (b) and (c).
In case your images are truely deleted you can do a <Print to JPG file>. In the print Module on the right side in the <Print Job> panel besides the words <Print To> click on the small triangles besides <Printer> and select <Print to JPG file> that would save your image as a small jpg.

  • What's the best way to merge, restore or reconstruct iPhoto and Aperture libraries to resolve images that are not found/offline?

    Hey there, Apple Support Communities.
To start, I'm working on a MBP Retina 15" with a 2.3GHz i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM.  10GB free on a 256GB SS HD.  Attached are two external HDs - one 1TB Western Digital portable drive from 2011, one 2TB Porsche LaCie non-portable drive from 2013; both connected via USB.  All photo libraries in question are on the external drives.
I have Aperture 3.5.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1.  I prefer to work in Aperture.
    The Issue(s)
Over the years, I have accumulated a number of iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries.  At one point, I thought my WD drive was dying so I purchased the LaCie and copied all libraries over the the LaCie drive.  (Turns out, there's probably an issue with my USB port reading drives, because I can once again see the WD drive and occasionally I can't see the LaCie drive.)
So now I have old version of some libraries on the WD drive, and new versions on the LaCie drive.
When I was moving things, I ran the software Gemini to de-dupe my iPhoto libraries.  Not sure what effect that may have had on my issues.
In my main Aperture library and in some iPhoto libraries, I get the image-not-found badge or exclamation point.  I've dug through the hidden Masters folders in various libraries to find the original image.  In some cases, I have been able to find the original image, sometimes in a different version of the iPhoto library.
    My Question(s)
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
    2.  For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
    3.  Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
TL;DR: Too many iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
Thank you!  Let me know if you need add'l info to offer advice.
    With appreciation,
    Christie

That will not be an easy task, Christie.
I am afraid, your cleaning session with Gemini may have actually removed originals. I have never used this duplicate finder tool, but other posters here reported problems. Gemini seems to replace duplicate original files in photo libraries by links, and this way, deleting images can cause the references for other images to break. And Aperture does not follow symbolic links - at least, I could never get it to find original files this way, when I experimented with this.
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
You have to find the originals yourself. If you can find them or restore them from a backup, Aperture can reconnect them. The reconnect panel can show you, where the originals are supposed to be, so youcan see the filename and make a Spotlight search.
For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
Make a copy of the missing original you found in a folder outside the iPhoto library. You can either open the iPhoto library in Aperture and use "File > Locate Referenced file" to reconnect the originals, or simply reimport them. Then Lift&Stamp all adjustments and metadata to the reimported version.
See this manual page on how to reconnect originals:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images  (the paragraph:  Reconnecting Missing or Offline Referenced Images)
Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
References images will stay referenced, managed will remain managed. You need to unhide all hidden photos in iPhoto - this cannot be done in Aperture.
and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
That is probably due to Gemini's replacing duplicate originals by links, and your best cause of action is to fix this before merging the libraries. Reconnecting can be done for your iPhoto libraries in Aperture.
