The Shockwave Flash 10.1 r82 plugin check says "VULNERABLE" and suggest an update for Adobe flash player 10.1. It may disable my antivirus. Is this safe? Is it the right update?

I have Firefox 3.6.10.
When I checked for plug-ins updates, it opened the "plug-in check" page and showed the Shockwave Flash 10.1 r82 as "vulnerable", explaining a potential security vulnerability and suggesting to update to latest version if existent, or if not, disable the plugin.
The Adobe security advisory suggests to upgrade to the newest version Adobe Flash Player 10.1.85.3.
When I click on it, it says Adobe Flash Player 10.1 only. It also says: "You may have to temporarily disable your antivirus software". Is this safe? Also: how do I know that the 10 . 1 version is the same as the 10.1.85.3 version?

The [http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ Adobe Flash Player] page refers to 10.1, but the full version details for the latest release is 10.1 r85 which is a security update. You can get it from the above link, or use the manual installers available from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html#main_ManualInstaller
You should not have to disable the Anti-virus software in order to install Flash, only do that if is is interfering with the installation.

  • HT2128 I keep on getting updates for Adobe Flash Player.app, are these safe to download?

I keep on getting messages to download updates for Adobe Flash Player.app however, I always get a warning message since it is an application downloaded from the internet and the question "Are you sure you want to open it?" Are these safe to download, or shall I cancel it? Perhaps it is best to go to the Adobe site? Any recommendations? Thank you very much.

It can be easier to remove Adobe Flash Player from OS X entirely, and be done with the effort involved.  Adobe has a tool to remove Flash Player from OS X available.  (If you really need Flash capabilities, there's a version embedded in the Chrome web browser that might suffice.)
As for your question, if you have gone directly to the Adobe web site (by entering the URL in Safair, and not by clicking on anyting in email or on another web site), and have downloaded Adobe Flash Player updates from there, then you're reasonably safe.
If you've downloaded the Adobe update bits from the Adobe site (and again, not from any other site), then clicking through the "yes, I know I downloaded this" is probably safe.

  • Is it okay to download updates for adobe flash?

Hi - I heard a few months back that we should no longer accept updates for Adobe Flash on Macs, as there might be security issues.  Has that been lifted?  Is it okay to download the updates?

Ensure you're downloading them directly from Adobe's site. If you see a prompt to update, go to Adobe's site to get the updater instead of downloading it from the prompt.

  • No update for Adobe Flash Player 10.1.102.64 for MacG4 PPC Tiger,  ... hmmm

Adobe has just tagged "Critical" vulnerability with NO UPDATE for its Flash Player 10.1.102.64, the latest and now apparently last version for PPC macs running Tiger:
    Adobe Flash Player Update
    What are our options?
However, updates were announced for Adobe Reader 9.4.1 to 9.4.2 and for Adobe Shockwave 11.5.9r615 to 11./5.9r620. I've installed these updates.
    Thanks.

    What are our options?
    Don't use Flash.
Don't worry about it since driving in a car is probably more dangerous.
Buy a newer computer which is what we'll ultimately have to do in order to stay up to date.
Not feel so bad about it when in a week or two they report security holes in the new version and one realizes there will always be bugs and holes.
Not focus on it because we're so busy worrying about how we haven't been able to do any other security issue patching in the past year since Apple stopped doing Tiger security updates.
I'm going with 2. If I suddenly see my computer speaking Russian and my keyboard bursts into flames when I try to override it, then I'll worry.

  • Need to install an update for Adobe Flash Player, Help?

How do I install an update for an Adobe Flash Player on my Mac Mini?

Installing the Flash Update on your Mac
This is what I had to do to install it; I'm using OS X 10.9 Mavericks; you may get different results if you're still using Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion (earlier OSs)
I encourage you to do backup your system, download and install the Free, most current operating system for Macs, Mavericks OS X 9.
At some point, Adobe Flash will offer you the opportunity to update itself. It's a good idea, to do so.
Step 1 will be to download the Update .dmg file, which installs the update.
It will probably be in your Downloads folder; double click on it.
When the folder presents itself in a new Finder window, double-click on it.
At some point in the Install, it will pop up a notice to Shut Down Safari/Opera/Chrome/Firefox (all Browsers).  That's easy.
It will also likely insist that you shut down a Dashboard Client.  Only the Dashboard Client won't show when you try Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape).
Here's what I had to do, to make it work; there may be a more efficient way, but I didn't find it.
Here's what worked for me, and I'm going to spell it all out the Dummy way, 'cause that's how I need things done for me! : )
Click on an empty space on the Desktop to activate Finder. In the Finder Menu (top) click on the GO tab (top menu) and scroll down to Utilities. Click on the Activity Monitor. In the CPU tab (any of them will work), Click onDock and, holding the Command button (Splat) next to the Space Bar, click on all incidents of Dashboard Client.  They're easy to find-- they all have a little grey folder icon to the left of them.
Click on VIEW in the top menu, scroll down to Select Processes, and click on that. The window will simplify and isolate, showing only the selected processes that are keeping you from installing the Flash update.
Then click on the big red stop sign at the top (Quit Process).... (This didn't work for me. No 'Stop' sign.)
Alternately, once you've 'collected' the appropriate files, click on and select each one individually, go up to View in the top menu, scroll down to Quit Process. After a brief pause, it will quit. Quit all of the processes selected.
Make sure everything else is closed and then try to install the Flash Player again. It should work! (Fingers crossed!)
'Always a good idea to Reboot, afterwards, and you should be good to go.

  • Too frequent updates for Adobe Flash player

Why are updates to the Flash player so frequent.    It seems like there is an update every 10 days, even sooner.

What do you have your update settings set to?  To check, go into the Flash Player control panel and click on the Advanced tab.  The options are:
Allow Adobe to install updates (recommended)
    Notify me to install updates
Never check for updates (not recommended)
The default is "Allow Adobe to install updates (recommended)".  If that is selected, the last time you should have seen an update notification was back in July.  Subsequent updates, including the one made a couple weeks back, were done silently.

  • Why are there so many updates for Adobe Flash & Reader?

It seems like I am having to update at least once a week. This is very tedious. Also, $39 to chat with someone about my issue???

There aren't that many. For instance Adobe Reader XI had updates in January, February and May, only three this year.
What there are is a great many SCAMS from people who say they want you to update, and instead fill your computer with goodness knows what.
If you aren't sure whether you have been taken in by one of these, a good thing to do is to post a screen shot of the message telling you to update (don't try to reply with a screen shot in an email, it won't work).
