The slideshow I saved says media offline

I saved 100-150 photos, with transitions between each.  Now when I open it, it says media offline and asks me where each and every photo is stored...waste of time with a brand new program...first time used...NOT happy!

Please confirm what version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system it is running?
Am I correct in assuming that you are building this slideshow in the Premiere Elements Editor and not the Elements Organizer Slideshow Editor/Builder?
If you are getting Media Offline messages when you open a saved closed project, the likely explanations include
1. You moved, deleted, renamed files and folders that were imported into the project after you saved closed the project. When you import
your source media into a project, all you get in the project are copies of the originals which are at their hard drive save location. But, the project needs to trace back to the originals at the location where they were when first imported into the project. The "Where is the file....?" messages are your means to make the source media - product reconnects.
2. The other possibility is that you store your source media on an external hard drive and that the drive has malfunctioned, perhaps changing driver letter.
Please review and consider, and then let us know if any of the above applies to your situation.
Thank you.

  • Media file thumbnails in browser say "media offline", but files are online and available for viewing/editing. How do I get a thumbnail of the clip back?

I am moderately experienced with FCE, but cannot figure out this issue. The thumbnails in my browser say "media offline", and no longer show a thumbnail of my video clip. When I try to reconnect the media files, the reconnect dialog box only checks for "online" media. I am able to view and work with the media files in my project even though it says they are offline. This issue seems to occur after a power outage. Its more of an annoyance than anything else, but I would still like to find a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Figured it out.

  • I created a movie and can't open it.  It says media offline when I try to open.

I created a movie and can't open it.  It says media offline when I try to open it.  I have another video saved in the same place that opens just fine.  What do I do to open my movie?

This is nothing to do with Adobe Reader. Please ask your question in the correct forum.

A thousand thanks and kudos to Michael for this fabulously excellent thread!
Eudora's now happy in her new Snow Leopard VM home on my Lion ModBook!
Appears essential to keep resource-forked data off Lion disk:
First attempt with Eudora on SL VM was sharing data on Lion disk. Error messages on open like "can't find Table of Contents" suggest Lion ate resource forks crucial to Eudora.
Found success by transferring data from SL Mac to thumb drive, then mounted drive in SL VM so Lion couldn't touch.
While Michael warns against storing data in VM, appears there's no choice with Eudora. At least She's enthroned on a mirrored RAID.

  • "Media offline" and "The selected file cannot be linked"

Ok, I'm extremely frustrated right now.  I opened up a project file, and all of my motion backgrounds say "Media offline."  The files have not been moved or changed.  They haven't even been touched.  So, I tried to link them back, but then it says "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)."
There was never any audio associated with these files.  These files have always been just motion backgrounds.
I can't just reimport them and start over.  There are too many of them.
Is there any way I can just override the error?  I obviously don't need any audio.  I don't understand why there's no option to just link without the audio, especially since there never was any audio.

Sorry, this is CS3.  I forgot to write that.
Edit: Ok, if anybody else has this problem and finds this through Google, I found out what caused it and how to fix it.
Some other program, I think a video converter, rewrote my codecs.  And it didn't do a good job.  I had already removed the video converter because it wasn't any good anyway.  So, I went through my "Uninstall or change a program list" (this being Windows), and removed everything that didn't look familiar, and then I reinstalled Xvid.  Now it works fine.

  • Premiere CC - media offline when working with AE comps

I am working with Premiere CC and using After Effects CC comps for some Keylight 1.2  keying within the project - AE comps created in Premiere via "right click" on clip saying "superseded by AE comp".
The After Effects project incl. all the comps and Premiere project saved locally - same location, local.
Till now editing (P) & keying (AE) worked without any huge problems - due to using 4k material I had some play-back problems - not worth mention it though.
    POSSIBLE REASON? When it started:
With both open - AE and Premiere project - I worked on the key in the AE comps. When finishing the keying I saved the changes - what normally works finw without asking me WHERE to save it.
Now AE asked me where I would like to save the project although it should have a location already - as I saved it before locally.
So I saved it with the same name and same location - overwriting the "old" project. That was when the problem occured...
    PROBLEM:
Now the Premiere project can not find/link the AE comps / project. Saying: Media Offline.
Although it displays the right path in the Premiere project window!
    TRIED THIS:
In Premiere I tried to "Link to media". Which will work for any three of the 20 AE comps!
At the 3rd or 4th one I try to link (automatically doesn't work here for some reason?) Premiere either hangs after a while or "changes mind" and finds no links anymore - even those I relinked just minutes before will have no connection anymore - again "offline"!
Nonetheless, the After Effects project works fine. No problems here (project has neither a long name nor blanks).
Any ideas what could be wrong? How can I relink the comps? I am really clueless.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Mylenium basically answered your question: quit both applications, manually clean Media Cache Database, restart PrPro and let it rebuild Media Cache Database (reconform files). Other than that provide information about your disk setup. Since AE wanted to know where to save project file, it might for some reason lost connection...

  • Media Offline but it's there

Brought up a old show, when it launched in FCP 5.1.4 said it was from an older version, should it update and I clicked OK to update. All the video clips in the time line show a image, if I open the original clip in the Viewer it's there & plays correctly but when I play the show in the Canvas all the video clips say Media Offline.
I've tried to re-render everything, I closed FCP and trashed the preferences using FCP4 Rescue but nothing I do seems to work. When I open the show it warns me there is one file missing and that's it. There's a glitch somewhere but I can't figure out what to do.

I didn't update the app, I had FCP open editing a show, I closed that show - not FCP - then opened an older show (probably edited with FCP 3) it said:
+"The file format of this project is from an earlier version. Would you like to update this project file?+
+Note: Once saved, this file cannot be opened by previous versions. To avoid overwriting the original project files, you can use Save Project As from the file menu when the project updating is complete"+
Problem solved now, I saved myself by doing the Save Project As once it opened the first time (and second). When I opened the file the first time something obviously glitched. Went back and opened & updated the original file a second time everything worked fine, just the one missing file. Go figure.

  • Media Offline from a USB

I have uploaded some pictures in jpeg format from a usb to a final cut project. Everything is working fine, I had saved it an everything then, my unreliable usb, was bumped and was disconnected. The pictures in my timeline now say media offline and the pictures in the browser have media offline with a line through them. What do I do??

Files in FCE simply "point" to the originals where you imported them. So your photos are simply "pointers" to your original USB drive. What do you mean "was bumped and disconnected"?
If you can reattach your drive, do so and open up final cut. Right-click on one of the "media-offline" files, and choose reconnect media. Then locate where on your drive the files are using the FCE Reconnect window, and you should be fine.
P.S. You should only have to point to one photo in the Reconnect window and FCE will find them all, provided they are in the same place.

  • Media Offline As Soon As I Import

    Hello,
I just got Adobe Premiere Pro.  I saved all the videos from my camera onto my hard drive.  I then imported the videos off my hard drive into Premiere.  Although I see files have been imported I see no video, only the red screen saying media offline.
How can media be offline when I just imported it?  What am I doing wrong?
Thank you to anyone who can help.

Glad that the Relinking of the Media fixed things for you. Normally, one does not need to do any Relinking, as the Link should be established upon Import. Out of curiosity, are those Assets on an external, or networked HDD?
Thanks for reporting what cured things for you, and welcome to the forum.

  • Premiere pro cc 2014 black screen or "media offline"

Almost impossible to do much work in Premiere CC 2014. I use 3 machines in business and Premiere doesn't work with any of them for long. I can be editing fine for about an hour then suddenly my program monitor goes black or says media offline. The only way I can get it back is to reboot about 4-5 times before the project will load again. This happens regardless of where the media is stored, what version of Mac OS is used, or what plugins are used. Anybody else experiencing this?

Hey John! Thanks for the help! So far I've encountered the issue on three different macs. Two are stock iMacs so some AMD chip. The third and least problematic is a desktop running a GTX 780 with CUDA 6.0.46. I will have to check on the two iMacs on Monday... I'm updating the Cuda for the desktop to see if that changes anything.

  • "Media offline" in Final Cut Express

Using an external drive as my scratch disk (or at least I think I am), and after exporting video clips into FCE, changing the name of the clip to make it more descriptive, everything appears to be fine. If I close the program and return, all the clips I loaded now have a red line through them and the screen says "Media Offline." I've tried and tired to "reconnect" but that doesn't work. I also can't find the clips on in the FCE folders on either my hard drive or laptop. Any suggestions?

Pardon my mis-nomenclature. I captured video clips from my camcorder into FCE. I changed the names of the clips in the browser window (I don't know what the formal name is, but it's the window that shows up in FCE showing your clips), which I had done before without any problem.
A complicating factor: After I had captured most of a tape's worth of clips, I realized that my laptop was designated the scratch disk. I changed the designation to my hard drive, and dragged the capture folder over to the hard drive. Those clips continue to show up fine. It's only the clips I've captured after all this that are lost or "offline."

  • Premiere pro cs6 capture settings/media offline

I'm trying to capture footage from my Sony HDV camera to Premiere pro cs6. After capturing it shows up in my project as an mp3 file and when I transfer to the timeline it says media offline. Can anyone please help?? When I import a file from cs5 project it says media offline also. When I import say an .flv file it works fine. I have matched the capture setting to that of cs5 so I'm rather confused...

To restore default preference settings and plug-in cache at the same time, hold down Shift-Alt (Windows) or Shift-Option (Mac OS) while the application is starting. Release the Shift-Alt keys or Shift-Option key when the splash screen appears.
Try if this works. It is weird that this happens. I have never had it with CS5+/6 both with Win7 and Win8.

  • Media offline in CS6, but not in CS4!

    Hi,
I have a strange Problem: On the same PC the same mpg-File is OK in Premiere CS4. But in CS6, the same file says "Media offline" with the famous questionmark. Sometimes, when I start a new project, and import the file, it is "Online" for a second or two, but then suddenly offline anagian and it stays this way.
    You find a screen-shot of both CS4 and CS6 here: http://www.composia.eu/Premiere_Both.pdf
    Has anyone any idea???
    Greetings from Germany
    Peter.

    Hello Jim,
Thanks for the advice, I treid it, but to no avail... Same Problem. What is strange too:
Up to now the "Offline media"-Problem only seems to occur in CS6, when the file size of the mpg is smaller than 704x576 Pixels. I converted the "Media-offline"-File from 352x288 to 704x576, and imported both files into a new PP project. Result: the 704x576-Version is "online", the 352x288-Version (of the same file) is offline (see screen-shot here: http://www.composia.eu/Premiere_size.jpg).
BUT: As I said, this happens only in PP CS6, in PP CS4 both files are ok (on the same PC...).
    Perhaps you try it yourself:
This file is the one that is always "Offline":
    http://www.composia.eu/videotests/Test_352x288.mpg  (3 MB)
While the same video with different size is always onlie:
    http://www.composia.eu/videotests/Test_704x576.mpg  (18 MB)
I would be very interested, if the first file is correct in "your" CS6 ...
    Peter.
