The so-called software update goes on forever---what's the point?

Every few days I get this window "Update Available" "It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible."
I have activated it and it goes on for hours and hours, day after day, surely this can't be a real update program...please give me more information about this supposed "Update"
On the web, some claim this update is a virus!

i was considering not to reply for fear the moderators might pull your ranty post and then my reply would have been in vain.
anyways, you might want to give this a shot.
another option, if you are not concerned with playlists, ratings, and playcounts, would be to start with a fresh library and repopulate that new library with the content you apparently still have.

You needing to be running iOS 5 or later in order to do a Software Update from the device. To run iOS 5 you need a 3G or 4G iPod Touch. So if you really have a 4G iPod Touch, connect it to iTunes and you should be prompted about an update to its version of iOS.

IOS 4 do not have Settings>General>Software Update.
You have to connect your iPad to iTune (computer) and Check for Updates.
Backup before you proceed with update.

HT2404 I just clicked on Software Updates; BUT nothing shows what's happening? How come I can't see the updates & time it will take?

Help! I just got this Lion, and SO many changes & not necessarily for the better !
I went to the Apple icon, but "Software Updates" did not show ... though I had deferred installing some updates ...
Finally it showed up, I clicked on it, saw the updates to do - BUT when I clicked on install - the "box" that usually shows the updates & how long to install - just disappeared! I can't get to it to see what's next. (I have to leave soon & will turn off the mac)
What's happening? How come I can't see the updates as they are installed, & how much time it will take?
How do I know IF they have been installed? Is this the "new Normal" for Lion? Or is there a glitch in my mac somewhere?
How about updates you download from Apple (not bought) - they go to Downloads on the Sideboard, but are they installed automatically, & put where they belong too? Is there no more restart, etc.?
- I just went to Systems Preference, to see the "Installed Software" - shows they were ... but don't I have to restart anymore? Are all updates now automatically placed where they belong?

Reset Password starting from Recovery HD
Start the computer,then press and hold down command and R keys to start into recovery partition.
When you see the Apple logo, release the keys.
Wait until OS X Utilities window shows up.
Move the mouse to the menubar at the top and click "Utilities", then select "Terminal"
from the drop down.
Terminal window will appear.
Type in resetpassword and press enter on the keyboard.
Leave the Terminal window open.
Reset Password Utility window will open with Macintosh HD selected.
Select the user account from the popup menu box.
Enter a new password.
Reenter the new password for the user.
Enter a hint.
Click the "Save" button.
Click  in the menubar and select Restart.
Log in.
If Keychain dialog box appears, select “Create New Keychain”.

HT1923 when i try to reinstall itunes it says that the older version of the apple software update cannot be removed, what should i do?

I have tried to remove it myself and it says the parimeter is incorrect and it cannot be found. help!! i need itunes reinstalled.

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

downloaded the software update for my phone nd installing it at the moment and it has been on the same spot for 2hours now..and its just backing up my data not yet installing the updates..am scared of pulling out the ba3 because this might destroy the phone...i really dont know what to do anymore...

There are two methods of recovery for you to try:
One:
Open Blackberry Desktop Software & Connect your device with PC using USB cable, without inserting battery.
You will get three option Retry, Update Or Cancel, then click on update.
Once it is to the stage of the update "initializing handheld", then insert battery.
If this does not work, and you remain stuck on the backing up the Social Feeds database, go to the second method below.
Secondly:
Start your BlackBerry in Safe mode. Article ID: KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Modehttp://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB17877
Connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Software and allow your handheld to connect. If you are prompted to upgrade, cancel the upgrade for later.
IF you cannot connect or your Desktop Software does not recognize your device while in Safe Mode, please follow the directions here to force the detect:  Article ID: KB10144 How to force the detection of the BlackBerry smartphone using Application Loader
Go to Device > delete > SELECT DATA > select to delete both the Social Feeds and Smart Card databases, and follow the remaining prompts to complete it.
Now, you can return and click to upgrade the device through the Desktop Manager, or reboot the BlackBerry in normal mode and continue the over the air upgrade.

Very old versions of the iOS prior to iOS 5 did not have the option to update over the air by using the Settings app. If your iOS is lower than 5.0 you need to update your iPad while connected to the computer you normally sync with.
First thing to do is start iTunes on your computer and use the menu to check for updates. Your iTunes must be version 11.1 so it you have and earlier version of iTunes on your computer update iTunes to 11.1.
Then start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPad. Select your iPad in iTunes and select General or Summary in the right side panel. Do a backup of your iPad next.
Once the backup is complete click on Check for updates.

Unkown error during software update... What's happening?

Last night I set my iphone up for an update. It first decided to backup itself... Which took ages, so I went to sleep leaving the process on.
When I woke up in the morning, it said "Update is failed due to an unkonwn error"... something along those lines anyway.
Now my iphone does not start, itunes does not recognize it as well.
Since I have got it, everyday, I am coming to realize another thing that is wrong with this phone... It really *****! It is the second last worst phone I had ever used in my life, if not the worst!
Itunes never sync properly, it is either my calender or songs that are left out...
Somebody please advice something so it starts to work out...
(For those who don't have an iphone yet; NEVER BUY ONE. IT IS A GREAT HARDWARE BUT SOFTWARE IS HORRIBLE

Regarding the error in software update: It just means you lost your internet connection, but it was the fault of something on your side, not Apple's side. Try again later, or better yet, try it somewhere else. Sounds like your internet setup (your router, modem, etc) is having problems.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

Never. N73 is an old model, and it is very very unlikely that Nokia would release a new firmware. There has been no firmware updates for S60 phones as such, and even S60 FP1 devices like the N95 (these might have another one or two, if at all there are any).

Are any Leopard Software Updates going to mess up my G4?

Hey what's up everyone!
Got a Quad G4, just upgraded to Leopard.
I am very aware to skip the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 because it wasn't meant for G4's only G5's.
Can any other fellow Macsters tell me what other Updates to skip?
Do you know if Apple made of a list of things not to Update if you have a G4?
Any tips will be appreciated!

Last week I installed Leopard on my G4, then when I got to updating the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 my computer when to a black screen after start up. Then I went here and search the keyword Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 and people where having the same issues. That's why I'm asking if anybody else knows what other updates that are not meant for G4's. There must be a list of updates that are not intend for G4's.
I just want to make sure becuz you know it's a Headache re-installing

Read further down in those instructions. The ability to update over the air came with iOS5. Since you don't have 5, you'll need to connect that iPad to the computer you normally sync with, update iTunes (Since you show that you have a 2 and it'll update to iOS7 you need at least iTunes 11). THen you'll want to do a backup of your device. Then download and do the update.
If you read further down on those directions they have step by steps for syncing via iTunes. Those are the ones you need to follw.

1 - you should only rip video if you have license rights to do so
2 & 3 - Apple Intermediate Codec and DV are completely different codecs. Do not mix them. Don't put an AIC video clip in a DV NTSC sequence ... you are only asking for trouble. You could convert the video to DV NTSC and use it in a DV NTSC sequence ... or convert to AIC and put it in an AIC sequence.
4 - whether or not to deiniterlace depends on your ultimate use of the video ... TV, DVD, computer, web ...
