I'm trying to download java on my Mac machine but the software update doesn't show me anything. Please advise what I should do to get the application.

If you can run it under chrome, you have java installed.
There was some malware that exploited an older version of Java (not javascript) running in a Browser. Since few people use it Apple turned off Java by default in the Safari Browser.
If you need it for something, just turn it back on in Safari preferences (inside Safari). After a few months of non-use, you may find it has turned itself off again.

i have ipod touch 3rd gen

You need to connect your iPod to iTunes on a computer and update from there.
Before updating, I recommend that you create a backup first, using : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Please note that iPod 3d generation only goes up to iOS 5.1.1

Software update ask for a restart before installing the updates. After the restart password is asked. When given the computer is restarted but the software updates have not been installed. How come?

    This article
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57400956-263/apple-issues-software-installe r-update/
explains what might be going on.
I noted that one of the updates in the list for my wife's iMac was an update to Software Update itself. Probably to fix this very problem. But it wasn't being applied due to Software Update itself not working.
    I considered two solutions.
    (1) Uncheck all the updates except that one update to Software Update. Then after fixing Software Update, apply all the other updates remaining. I did NOT try this approach.
    (2) Download and install the "combo update" for 10.6 -- from here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399
I decided to try solution #2. It's a large download, 1 GB, but the whole process took less than 15 minutes. The "combo" update checks and reapplies every update since the beginning of 10.6, so if something is missing or amiss, it gets filled in. It's done manually, by downloading the update, opening the .dmg file, and running the update. When I did this, it fixed the Software Update issue because I then reran Software Update and additional, new updates were found and they all installed fine. Software Update was working as it should. I then ran it a third time and some additional ones were found, also then successfully applied. Finally, no new updates were found by Software Update, which mean everything is up to date.
I can't be sure if your issue is the same as mine (the bug in the CNET article above) but I'm guessing that the combo update will resolve your issue.

  • HT4623 Software updates is not showing in my settings?

My settings does not show the software update tab and I need tp get latest updates. How do I do this?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Software Updates app not showing new updates

    Hi,
The Software Updates app is not showing new updates. I always get "No Updates Available".  For instance, I run 10.8.3 but 10.8.4 is not showing up. I run iTunes 10.0.2 and when I open it  I get messages asking me to update to newer versions but they are never showing up in the Software Updates app. I played with the Software Updates app preference files but it did not change anything. Any idea on why the Software Updates app is not working properly.
    Thanks

Read this whole message before doing anything.
Back up all data. Quit the App Store application if it’s running. Test after each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Updates
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Move the contents of the selected folder to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
    Step 2
Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
If there's no change, quit the App Store and restore the file you moved from your backup, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, recreate your settings in the Software Update preference pane.
    Step 3
Hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
    Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.*.plist
    Saved Application State/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.savedState
Here, "*" stand for a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes.
    Step 4
If you still have problems, quit the App Store again.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    open $TMPDIR../C
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). A folder should open. Inside that folder, there may be a subfolder with the name "com.apple.SoftwareUpdate". If so, delete it. You can then quit Terminal.

  • The software update will not install on my 3rd gen. iPod Touch

I've downloaded the software update to my computer, but when trying to install it to my iPod, it fails halfway through. I gave it about 5 hours the first time, but the progress bar didn't budge. I would reinstall the update but I don't know how to do that.
Can anyone tell me what's wrong?
(I am updated to iTunes 10)

i would recommend you don't upgrade because ever since i upgraded my ipod had to be restored and now all my songs skip. i never had this problem with my 3rd gen touch until the upgrade

  • HT1338 Software Update does not show 10.8.5 Security Update 2014-002

I continue to have Mac 10.8.5 updates which do not show in the App Store Software Update.  In the past it was always iTunes which didn't show.  Now it's this security update.  Why would Software Update not show these available updates?  Instead it shows Mavericks and such as available updates, but not the current available security update for my version of OS X.  I'm only aware an update exists because of online forums.  Is this a widespread issue that is affecting everyone on Mt Lion?

Already tried that.  We set up iClound under a new user account and it did not work.
(We tested iCloud Mail with Apple Sr. support yesterday, in a new user account.  It did not work.  Note, iCloud via web access via Safari of course will work, accessible from any computer.  That is not computer-specific.  But iCloud mail would not work on my Mac, nor in the Mail app, even under a new test user account.  This was mentioned briefly in previous post above.)
Regarding re-installing ML, Apple support have never suggested that.  They have only suggested moving my current data to a new user account, which as I mentioned is not realistic, and now with the new iCloud problem across any new user account, would not solve the problem.
How do you mean to re-install ML?  Erase the HDD, reinstall ML, then restore from Time Machine?
I think Apple has not suggested that so far because they believe the problem is in the current Mac data, user account, and not in the system.  They have told me migrating to a new Mac or even to Mavericks probly would not solve the problem.  But now that it's a systemic issue with iCloud -- my previous issues with Software Update not working and appeared to be user account-specific, and still are – perhaps replacing the system software or upgrading to Mavericks will be worth considering.
They are currently elevating my case to "engineering."  They will be looking at system data, I believe...
    It's incredibly frustrating.

  • Installed software updates do not show

Hello Any and All: I just now am getting around to this question- a month ago (OK maybe 7 weeks) I had a warranty replacement of hard drive and the cable that connects it.
Since, the only software updates showing in the log are from the night I got it.
I have run updates- just did some a while ago. I watched the window, it said installing and all that, required the restart....
But they are not in the installed updates log.
Anyone: am I getting the updates do you think? And does it matter? And, any idea why it is doing this (besides the fact it is my computer and it has been from minute one, a total pain, to be as generous as mother teresa.....)??????
I will look for answers in the morning. Thanks.

Hey there Tuttle!! Yeah, I am hanging in... the heat was rough to work in, but a few more fronts and I made it through! I had good check up at the dermatologist, and now will be on a semi-annual check, instead of the quarterly I had been (having been drafted into the M club... but my doc found it tiny, so, Knock wood, I should be cool until the next cell goes wackjob and proliferates...) OUR hurricane was slowest traveller on record around here, but of those beasts, the best specimen to have come by....except on the coast that had it a bit rougher than I did....the eywall scraped the beach like a perfect tangent....
back to topic though: First THANKS for the response!
I went to System profile first, and opened applications.... ( I should have written down all the updates that came in- 6 in first, then the security update)
I recall one being an iPod updater, and one for iPod to phone update [{(how do the batteries do in a music playing phone?)}] and a quicktime update- it said if you have QTpro, you'll need a new key (I delayed that from a few days back, until I had time to read that it was only Pro that would need to pay again...).... I forget the other updates-
Anyway, I find in system pref's no quicktime with a date anywhere near now: but it is 7.0.2 (date 8/31/05- could that have been the one I delayed?)
In the iPod I have an 8/17/05 and an updater with 10/01/05 date.
I see the java plugins made it(2.2.0) dated 10/01/05- ah, the iTunes is there
Oh good, there is updater...and Applet Launcher...java webstart too....
Cool, as far as the profiler goes, it looks like all got put in....
OK, then I went to the apple menu like you said, but before I did "about this mac," I did a software update, and it said I am up to date- so there is some confirmation too... the about says 10.3.9 (as I have not gotten tiger yet... that too would mean a new Qt key... it is a riot of fees in cyberspace..golly!) I had bought iwork and ilife, before tiger -which they offered in a package discount all three together- but not AFTER having bought the other two...bad timing.
So, anyway, Now I go to the last item you taught me to check: Library receipts.
Um, everything at first glance is identical- the orange exterior box with yellow interior.....except:Install log file, and CIA Core Installer Log. The latter of two just mentioned, upon opening seems to be related to my HP printer.
Oh, OK: so is the Installer log file (related to the HP Printer).....
Name of science < i opened GIMP-Print installer package, but it is just a receipt and cannot be opened...
OK, now this has turned into a book, eh? hahahahaha
Do you know of a way to make the system pref's software update show installed updates worK? I suppose I may be able to remember what you just showed me.... Since the last drive and cable (was it the cable all along??) I have been enjoying the computer I thought I had ordered...yehaaa!!- then this.
hahahahaha Compared to before< I can deal I am pretty sure. As long is it is not simply the first of a billin domino's about to go blasting around inside my machine. hahhahaha
So, how have you been? And Thanks for responding...
